Twenty years ago, life was very different from today. People lived in small houses and walked or rode bikes to work. Children played outside with friends after school. Families usually ate dinner together.
Today, life is faster and busier. Many families have moved to bigger flats or houses. People drive cars or take buses, but some still ride bikes—especially on their way to work. Children now spend more time on phones and computers, and many of them don’t know their neighbors very well.
Is modern life better? The answer is not simple. Some changes have made our lives more comfortable. We have better medical care, longer holidays, and more ways to learn. But other changes have made us feel more stressed and more alone.
In fact, every change has two sides. The same new road that helps us reach the city faster also cuts through farmland. The phone lets us talk to friends far away, but it also stops us from talking to people nearby. So the question is not whether life is “better”, but how we use each change.
24. What was children’s life like twenty years ago?
A. They had no friends.
B. They played outside with friends after school.
C. They played on their phones.
25. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. The new road. B. The phone. C. The change.
26. What is the writer’s main idea?
A. We should not change our life.
B. Modern life is better than before in every way.
C. Every change has two sides; how we use it matters.
27. In which part of a newspaper would you most probably read this passage?
A. Sports. B. Travel. C. Opinion
C
What would life be like if you were a rocker, a soccer player, a professor at Stanford University, and a Nobel Prize winner? Carolyn Bertozzi from the US lives such a cool life!
Bertozzi won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Barry Sharpless (US) and Morten Meldal (Denmark) in 2022. She won the prize for studying the sugar coats of cells (细胞). She has found a smart way to connect cells by connecting their sugar coats. The cells then have a green color so that scientists can see clearly where they are and how they move. According to the University of California, Berkeley, this finding has quite a good influence on medicine.
Except for doing science studies, Bertozzi has lived a vivid life. She was a keyboarder (键盘手) in a rock band. “I even used to think about making music my major (专业),” she said. She also played soccer and won a scholarship in sports from Harvard.
As a female scientist, Bertozzi tries to encourage female students. She started a monthly get-together for all the women students. In 2022, Bertozzi won an award for this.
Her experience made her learn a very important lesson: You don’t need to know how to succeed quickly. All you need to do is do some work every day and solve problems step by step. The way to success may finally appear.
28. How does the writer start the passage?
A. By giving an example. B. By telling a story. C. By asking a question.
29. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. Why Bertozzi won the Nobel Prize.
B. Bertozzi’s musical achievements.
C. Bertozzi’s sports hobby.
30. The underlined word “vivid” means ________ in the passage.
A. disabled B. hybrid C. colourful
31. What can we learn from Bertozzi’s experience?
A. We should learn music in our life.
B. We should wait patiently and work hard.
C. We should find the way to success quickly.

In 1809, Braille was born in a small town in France. ____32____ Later, his other eye was infected, resulting in complete blindness. His blindness inspired him to become an inventor who made contributions to all blind people.

Three years later, Braille developed a shorter and simpler touch system based on the night-reading code system. He used six raised dots with different combinations (组合) to stand for each letter. ____35____ Blind people could read much faster and more easily.
Braille died in 1852, but his touch system lives on. Now people call this touch system Braille in honor of Louis Braille.

Have you ever wondered how blind people read? Thanks to a system invented by Louis Braille, blind people can learn to use their fingers to read.
In 1809, Braille was born in a small town in France. ____32____ Later, his other eye was infected, resulting in complete blindness. His blindness inspired him to become an inventor who made contributions to all blind people.
When Braille was ten years old, his parents sent him to a special school for blind students. Braille learned how to read at this school. He was first taught to read by feeling raised letters on paper. ____33____ Too many letters felt the same, for they had similar shapes.
Then, in 1821, Braille heard about a night-reading code system. It was a 12-dot (12凸点) system that was created for night-time communication between soldiers. However, this system didn’t allow the fingertip to cover a whole letter. The readers had to move their fingers to feel the letters. ____34____
A. It allowed a blind person to feel a whole letter without moving his or her finger.
B. Braille thought that the night-reading code system could be improved for blind people.
C. However, this was slow and difficult.
D. Braille thought that the 12-dot system was a perfect choice for the blind.
E. When he was three, he accidentally hurt one of his eyes when he was playing.

根据前文“He was first taught to read by feeling raised letters on paper.”以及后文“Too many letters felt the same, for they had similar shapes.”可知,此处应点明这种触摸凸起字母阅读方式存在的弊端。选项C“However, this was slow and difficult.”用however表转折,点明这种阅读方式缓慢又困难,引出下文字母难以区分的问题。
【34题详解】
根据前文介绍12凸点夜间阅读系统的缺陷“The readers had to move their fingers to feel the letters.”,后文“Three years later, Braille developed a shorter and simpler touch system based on the night-reading code system.”写他基于这套系统研发出新的触摸阅读系统。此处应表达布莱叶对这套夜间阅读编码系统的想法,引出后文他改良系统的行为。选项B“Braille thought that the night-reading code system could be improved for blind people.”说明布莱叶认为这套夜间编码系统可以为盲人改良,为后文他研发新系统做铺垫。
【35题详解】
根据前文“He used six raised dots with different combinations to stand for each letter.”,后文“Blind people could read much faster and more easily.”可知,此处应介绍这套六点新系统的优势。选项A“It allowed a blind person to feel a whole letter without moving his or her finger.”介绍新系统可以让盲人不用移动手指就能感知完整字母,解释了盲人阅读更快更简单的原因。
