Objectives:

Language Ability:

1. Ss can master key vocabulary and phrases such as remind, attend a lecture, react, mix up, chain, and stable.

2. Ss can catch key information about daily memory problems and scientific explanations of memory from the listening materials.

3. Ss can talk about their memory problems, share methods for keeping memories, and discuss how to improve memory.

4. Ss can use listening strategies such as predicting and catching key words (e.g., "forget", "remember") to complete tasks.

5. Ss can summarize the tips for developing the brain and improving memory.

6. Ss can analyze the reasons behind forgetfulness and think about how to link new knowledge with old knowledge logically.

7. Ss can explore the mysteries of the brain and understand how memory works.

Teaching Procedures:

 

Step 1: Lead-in

1. The teacher asks Ss to look at the pictures and discuss: What are the people looking at? What might be in their photos?

2. The teacher asks: What methods do you use to keep memories? Guide Ss to brainstorm ideas (e.g., take photos, keep diaries, post on social

media).

3. Activity 1a: Ask Ss to look at the list (study, numbers, words, rules, poems, stories) and decide which ones are easy for them to remember and which are hard. Discuss with a partner.

4. Purpose: To activate Ss' background knowledge about memory, introduce the topic, and prepare them for the listening tasks.

 

Step 2: While-listening (Conversation 1: Peter and Mum)

1. Activity 1b: Let Ss listen to the first conversation and circle the things Peter needs to buy.

2. Activity 1c: Let Ss listen again and complete the sentences about Mum's reminders (e.g., reminding him to buy sugar, making a strawberry cake, advising him to take a shopping list).

3. Let Ss read the conversation and find out how Mum reminds Peter (using general questions and imperative sentences).

4. Purpose: To train Ss to catch specific details in listening and understand the language used for reminding someone.

 

Step 3: While-listening (Conversation 2: Billy and Fu Xing)

1. Activity 1d: Let Ss listen to the second conversation and tick the things Billy forgot (e.g., Fu Xing's birthday, homework, the time of the lecture). Remind Ss to focus on key words related to "forgetting".
