Before the first visit, Lin suggested letting each resident choose a comfortable place and decide which questions to answer. The group agreed. At one interview, a resident became quiet after a question about her childhood. Lin did not immediately ask another question. She waited. After a moment, the resident began to speak about a garden she remembered from school.
Later, the group listened to the recording. They noticed that the most useful information had come after Lin’s pause. From then on, they added time for silence to their interview plan. They also told residents that they could stop the conversation at any time. The recordings were important, but the group learned that respect for the people in them mattered just as much.

C Learning from a Plant
In the school garden, two groups grew the same kind of plant. Group A wanted a quick result and watered the plants whenever the soil looked dry. Group B read the instructions and checked the soil before watering. After a month, both groups had green leaves, but several pots in Group A were too wet. |
Instead of deciding which group was ‘better’, the teacher asked the students to compare their notes. Group A had written down the days they watered, but not how wet the soil was beforehand. Group B had recorded both. The students could therefore see why watering every time the surface looked dry might not be a reliable plan.
The groups changed their routine together. They made a shared chart and checked the soil at the same time each day. They did not expect every plant to grow at exactly the same speed. The experiment taught them to pay attention to evidence, accept useful advice and adjust their actions when the first plan did not work.
34. What was different about the two groups at first?
A. Only one group wrote anything down.
B. One group never checked the plants.
C. They used different ways to decide when to water.
D. They grew different plants.
35. Why were Group B’s notes more useful for comparison?
A. They contained more pictures.
B. They recorded the soil condition as well as watering days.
C. They used a larger notebook.
D. They recorded the weather for a year.
36. What did the groups do next?
A. Made a shared chart and checked the soil daily. B. Watered every pot twice a day.
C. Stopped growing plants. D. Expected every plant to grow at the same speed.
