When an epidemic hit our region, many of us turned to TV to pass the time. Neeti Goel and her children Anishka, age 15 and Arav, age 17, turned to volunteering to help those in need of a warm meal and a bit of sunshine in their lives. Neeti and her children began preparing casseroles (炖菜) and soups for Homeland Hospice patients and their families.
“We started with the desire to volunteer,” Neeti says. “It wasn’t long before we perfected our work and began preparing meals twice a month.” A month into their volunteering work, Anishka and Arav took on most of the cooking and expanded their menu to include soups. “It felt good to know we were helping others,” Anishka says. “Volunteering for a brief amount of time can make a big difference.”
After months of meal preparation for Homeland, Neeti and her children began helping two additional hospice (临终安养院) organizations in the region. As their work expanded, so did their grocery (食品杂货) bill. Anishka and Arav decided to start their own nonprofit (非营利的) organization to raise funds to pay for the food needed to prepare meals. The teens founded Rays of Sunshine to bring a bit of light to families in their time of need.
From working with a lawyer to creating a website, Anishka and Arav did everything. The experiences provided valuable life skills as well as resources to keep their love of helping others going.
Rays of Sunshine held its first fundraising event a few days ago. “We have raised more than $1,500,” Arav says. “The funds will help us continue making meals for families.” The event not only raised funds, but brought awareness of the power of volunteerism at any age and the work of Homeland Hospice.
Neeti, Anishka and Arav, never dreamed their decision to volunteer would create a transformational experience for the family. They simply set out to make someone’s day a bit brighter. “We were so pleased to learn how much the families enjoyed our cooking,” Neeti says. “It has been wonderful for us to work together as a family.”
41. What happened after the family volunteered for a month?
A. They expanded their work by joining two organizations.
B. The kids took charge of almost all the cooking.
C. They started to prepare meals twice a month
D. The kids simplified their menu.
42. What can we learn about Rays of Sunshine?

43. What can we infer about Rays of Sunshine’s first fundraising event?
A. It influenced participants in unintended ways.
B. It invited many families to join in meal — making.
C. It spread the message that people of any age can volunteer.

For a long time, science and culture held that the human sense of smell was underdeveloped, especially compared to animals. This belief was started by 19th-century thinkers and strengthened by a poorly supported study from the 1920s. As a result, smell has long been seen as the least important of the human senses.
However, new research challenges this misunderstanding. Scientists have found that the human nose is far more skilled than once thought. In carefully managed experiments, humans can detect certain smells at levels lower than many animals, including rats, bats, and some monkeys. For example, the special smell added to natural gas to warn us of leaks can be sensed by humans even when only a few drops are mixed into an amount of water as large as an Olympic swimming pool.
The power of smell goes far beyond simple detection; it strongly influences human behavior, often unconsciously. The weak smell of cleaning products, for example, can lead people to clean up. The familiar smell of coffee actually improves focus and mental performance. Stores often use “scent marketing”, understanding that the smell of fresh bread can create a friendly environment, and raise the chance of buying things.
The way the human brain processes smell is also quite different from other senses. While vision provides a detailed map of our surroundings, smell creates a holistic impression, mixed with inputs from other senses and emotions. The awareness of a lemon’s smell, for example, can be made stronger by its bright yellow color. Similarly, feelings of hunger or memories of past sickness can greatly change how we experience food smells, making them either attractive or unpleasant.
This deep link between smell, memory, and emotion explains why smell loss (anosmia) can so severely damage one’s quality of life. As experienced by millions during the COVID-19 pandemic, anosmia can lead to a loss of appetite, as much of flavor comes from smell, and can cause sadness and emotional disconnection. It can make people feel separated from the world and their memories.
Clearly, our sense of smell is not minor or unnecessary. It is a complex and powerful tool that continuously and quietly guides our interactions with the world, protects our well-being, and adds a rich, emotional layer to life.
46. What is the traditional belief about the human sense of smell?
A. Superior to animals’. B. Key to emotional memory.
C. Weak and unimportant. D. Complex but misunderstood.
47. What is implied by the gas leak example?
A. Dogs are unnecessary for gas detection. B. Humans can smell better than believed.
C. Human safety relies mainly on smell. D. The study aimed to compare species.
48. What do we learn about smell from Paragraph 4?
A. It gives environmental analysis. B. It is key to human survival.
C. It combines senses and feelings. D. It works without consciousness.
49. What is a possible result of anosmia?
A. Permanent taste loss. B. Better work concentration.
C. Connection with the world. D. Depression and isolation.
50. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To revalue the importance of smell.
B. To explain the causes of smell loss.
C. To discuss the history of perfume.
D. To describe the process of smelling.

Mom was right! If you say thank you, for even the smallest gift or slightest show of kindness, you’ll feel happy.
Gratitude (感激), says Robert A. Emmons, a professor of psychology at the University of California, is an important element of happiness. In his recent book, Thanks!, Emmons uses the first major study on gratitude to prove mom’s point. In acknowledging and developing this much-ignored expression of thankfulness, he explains how people have benefited — even improved their health.
As one of the leading scholars of the positive psychology movement, he admits gratitude may be difficult to express. He advises you to begin by admitting that life is good and full of events and elements that make daily existence a wonder. Second, recognize that the source of life’s goodness is more than just you. That source may be your mom, a friend, partner, child, colleague at work or play, or any combination of these.
Gratitude is always other-directed, notes Emmons. You can be pleased or angry with yourself and feel guilty about doing something wrong, but you can never be grateful to or for yourself.
Expressing gratitude shouldn’t be a reaction; it should be state of mind. To feel grateful when life is a breeze and you have more than you need is easy. To feel grateful in time of crisis — anger, hatred and bitterness — is easier. Also, too many people are aware of life’s blessings only after these are lost. The voices expressing gratitude from his studies of individuals are many.
It’s crisis and chaos — danger, disease, disability and death — that bring many individuals to realize just how dependent they are on others. Yet it’s the way each of us begins life and ends it. It’s too bad that so many people waste those decades in between laboring under the illusion (幻觉) that they are self-sufficient (自给自足的), says Emmons.
To enable and embrace gratitude, Emmons encourages the readers of Thanks! to keep a gratitude diary. He even provides easy-to-follow directions on how to practice and develop gratitude.
I’m not a reader or advocate of self-help books, but I am thankful for the reference I found in a newspaper article to the research Emmons was conducting on gratitude involving organ donors and recipients (接受者). The chance discovery led me to this book.
Mom implied that kindness seems to find its way back to the giver because life really is all about giving, receiving and repaying. So, I’ll pay attention to her professional advice and say: Thank you, Professor Emmons.
51. What does the text mainly discuss?
A. There are many ways of being thankful.
B. Gratitude is important to happiness.

阅读下面短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。
One day in early 2009, my friend and I were on the road near Cape Town, South Africa. Then a disaster happened! My car began to make strange noises, slowed down and died. The place where it broke down was not the safest area. We sat there, and my friend was trying to start the car until the battery (电池) gave out.
Drivers behind us were shouting. I had to get out and push the heavy car out of the way of traffic. Although I tried my best, the car was going nowhere. Then an elderly man covered in tattoos (纹身) walked towards us and helped push the car. My friend looked up into the rear-view mirror when she found she was moving and saw the blue-inked face of our assistant, screaming in shock.
When we were safely in a lay-by (临时停车处) near the traffic lights, the tattooed man melted away into a thick bush at the side of the road. I phoned the AAA (American automobile Association) for help and was told that there would be an hour-long wait.
I got out of the car for some fresh air. Unexpectedly, the tattooed man appeared at my side. “Is someone coming to help you?” he asked. My first thought was to lie, “Yes, my husband is a policeman, and his six friends at the police station will be here in seconds?” But there was kindness in his expression that made me tell him the truth. For the next hour, he sat with us on the side of the road, chatting with us. The hour flashed by.
When the AAA arrived, he stood aside until he was satisfied that we really were mobile again, and then he stepped forward to say goodbye. As we drove away, I realized I made a right decision not to judge a book by its cover.

C
【答案】46. C 47. B 48. C 49. D 50. A

It can make people feel separated from the world and their memories.(嗅觉、记忆和情绪之间的这种深层联系,解释了为什么嗅觉丧失会严重损害人的生活质量。
通读全文,尤其是第一段中的“For a long time, science and culture held that the human sense of smell was underdeveloped, especially compared to animals. This belief was started by 19th-century thinkers and strengthened by a poorly supported study from the 1920s. As a result, smell has long been seen as the least important of the human senses.(长期以来,科学界和文化界认为人类的嗅觉不发达,尤其是与动物相比。这一观念由19世纪的思想家提出,并因20世纪20年代一项缺乏有力依据的研究而得到强化。因此,嗅觉一直被视为人类感官中最不重要的一种。)”以及最后一段中的“Clearly, our sense of smell is not minor or unnecessary. It is a complex and powerful tool that continuously and quietly guides our interactions with the world, protects our well-being, and adds a rich, emotional layer to life.(显然,我们的嗅觉并非微不足道或毫无用处。它是一种复杂而强大的工具,持续而无声地引导我们与世界互动,保护我们的健康,并为生活增添丰富的情感层次。)”可知,文章先纠正人们对人类嗅觉的错误认知,再多角度论证嗅觉的重要作用,作者的写作目的是重新评价嗅觉的重要性。故选A项。

四、阅表

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
With the English Week approaching, I’m glad to submit my activity plan with the theme: Sci-tech Innovation.
I choose this theme for two reasons. Firstly, AI has profoundly transformed modern society and becomes an unavoidable topic of global conversation. In addition, exploring it in English bridges language study with cutting-edge technology, motivating us to master professional expressions while keeping pace with the times.
Two well-designed activities will be carried out to enrich our learning experience. First, an English mini-lecture will be presented to systematically explain basic AI knowledge and application such as 3D printing and smart robots. Second, a group presentation competition will be held, where team members cooperate to research and introduce some creative tech inventions in fluent and standard English.
These events combine language practice with scientific thinking. Not only will we polish our oral English, but we will also cultivate innovative thinking.
