Half a year before graduation from college, my son David began to seek a job. Due to the financial crisis, the competition was ever-fierce. My son targeted a company that was located in a coastal city. It was intended to employ only one person among more than twenty people. I said to David, “You should not have too much hope for fear that you would feel terribly disappointed when you fail." He said to me, "I am not afraid of disappointment. As long as I try, there will always be hope!"
Three young men could enter the final round, which would later decide one person to be employed, Everything seemed to go quite well and David entered the final round in a week. Unexpectedly, the interview was unbelievably simple, during which the interviewer only chatted with them for a while. The interview strategies my son prepared were not useful at all. The interviewer said the company would inform them of the result in 3 days. On the morning of the third day, David received the text from the company that he was not employed. David felt disappointed.
In nightfall that day, David suddenly told me excitedly on phone that he had been employed. Greatly surprised, I asked him, "What's the whole matter?" David told me that he received another text saying that he was employed. David felt very confused about it. Later he found out the first text sent to him was also part of the test in the interview. Three men received the same text this morning and only David's reply was satisfying to the company. I asked my son, “How did all of you reply?" My son said, "One did not reply. The other said "goodbye" and I said "thank you"."
Only then did I know that my son's “hope" came in that way. That is, when you feel disappointed, do not forget to say “Thank you" to the one who disappoints you. Actually, it is a piece of cake to say "Thank you". Saying “Thank you" shows respect for others' work and demonstrates your grand generosity. Therefore, while under the same condition, you will get the upper hand in terms of opportunities compared with others!
41. What can we learn about David from Paragraph 1?
A. He was not hopeful of getting the job.
B. He wasn't afraid of failure.

45. What would be the best title for the passage?

B. A Young Man And His Hope
C. The Magic Power of "Thank You"
D. Sunshine Always Appears After Storm
C
If I could give today’s young people three wishes, they would be: More hugs. More time outside in nature. More belief in their own power to change the world. While most people understand the importance of the first two wishes, the third one leaves some folks wondering why young people’s belief in their own power is so essential.
Let’s start with the idea that all of us-especially young people-need heroes. We need them to be our guides on the difficult trail (足迹) we call life and to show us just how far we can go. And we need heroes today more than ever. Our modern society is terribly confused about the difference between a celebrity (名人) and a hero. And the difference is vital. A celebrity is all about fame (名望)-temporary, superficial fame, usually for qualities that are easy to see: a pretty face, a great dance move. A hero, by contrast, is about character-qualities under the surface that aren’t visible until they take action.
Heroes are all around us. They truly hold our world together, through their unselfish devotion to helping others, teaching children, and protecting the environment. They don’t want fame, or glory; they just want to help. In so many ways, these unsung heroes pilot the boat in which all of us sail.
Yet, young people hear a lot more about celebrities than about heroes in the media. The hidden message they get from all this is that their self-worth comes from what they buy-which shoes, which cell phone-not who they are down inside. What gets lost in this? Young people’s sense of their own potential for heroic qualities-their own power to make a positive difference in the world. Truth is, there is a potential hero, a future difference maker, in every young person. Each of them, from whatever background, is a positive force who can do something. All it takes for that to be true is belief.
How do we help young people believe in their own power? The best way is simply to share examples, of other young people who have made a difference.
Ryan, age 11, has worked tirelessly to raise money to provide clean drinking water to African villages. When he first heard about the plight (困苦) of African children who died from impure water, Ryan was only six years old. In the next five years, he raised over $500, 000-enough to build over 70 water wells.
Barbara, age 17, grew up on a farm in Texas. When she realized that local farmers were pouring their used motor oil into rivers, causing pollution, she organized the creation of a recycling center for crude (未加提炼的) oil. Her project has grown to include 18 recycling centers in Texas.
The list could continue. These are but a few examples of young people who have discovered that they can build on their own energy to do something great.
46. What is the author’s purpose in writing Paragraph 2?
A. To give examples of celebrities and heroes around us.
B. To discuss the differences between celebrities and heroes.
C. To provide definitions of the words “celebrity” and “hero”.
D. To explain the details about being celebrities and heroes.
47. What is the meaning of the word “superficial” in Paragraph 2?
A. Not known.
B. Unexpected.
C. Undeveloped.
D. Without depth.
48. What could be inferred from Paragraph 3?
A. Heroes make the world go round.
B. Heroes must believe in themselves.
C. Heroes focus on social welfare programs.
D. Heroes promote cooperation between people.
49. How does the author advance his view that young people have the potential to be a hero?
A. By defining the qualities that make a young person a hero.
B. By contrasting the achievements made by different young people.
C. By giving examples of young people who show the qualities of a hero.
D. By providing examples of qualities that have made young people famous.
50. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. More heroes are needed in the world.
B. Celebrities are reported too much in the media.
C Adults should become role models for young people.
D. Young people should believe in their ability to make a difference.
D
There are some problem areas for international students and immigrants’ studying in the United States. Making friends is a challenge (this is also true for some American students). Many college and universities offer a variety of student clubs and organizations where both foreign-born and native American students have a greater chance of meeting people with shared interests. Information about these out-of-class activities is often posted in the student center and listed in the student newspaper. Sometimes foreign students and immigrant students find Americans to be “cliquish (有派性的)”. Americans find some non-U.S.-born students to be cliquish as well. If people feel separated from the social aspects of American college life, they should actively seek people with shared interests. It is unlikely that students will make friends just by passing people on the campus.
Foreign or immigrant students may feel confused during the first few weeks at a new school because they do not understand the system and are not willing to ask questions. Many students do not take advantage of the numerous services offered on campus that assist students in developing new skills and social groups. Some colleges offer students tutorial (辅导的) support in such subjects as writing, language study, computer skills, and other basic subjects. Students who appear to be most successful in "learning the ropes" are those who can solve problems by taking the initiative to ask questions, locate resources, and experience new social situations.
51. In the United States, students can find friends with the same interests by______
A. passing people on the campus
B. reading the student newspaper
C. joining the student clubs
D. visiting the student center
52. The sentence “people feel separated from the social aspects of American college life” (Line 7,Para. l) means they have difficulty in______.
A. communicating with others on the campus
B. being easily accepted by the university
C. finding people with shared interests
D. getting a job in American society
53. When they first come to college, some foreign students may feel confused because______.
A. they are denied any help from people around
B. they are provided with few services
C. they are faced with an unfamiliar educational system
D. they are unwilling to adapt themselves to the new environment
54. The phrase “learning the ropes” (Line 6, Para. 2) is closest in meaning to ______
A. finding the way to develop new skills
B. having the skills to make conversations
C. learning how to answer questions
D. knowing how to handle problems
55. From the passage we may conclude that foreign students______.
A. are unlikely to be successful in American college life
B. may face some problems in adjusting to American college life
C. are not good at developing friendship and social groups
D. can hardly learn well when they enter an American college
I often cycle two miles from my house to the town centre but unfortunately there is a big hill on the route. When I told my friend about this, he replied, “You mean fortunately.” He explained that I should be glad of the extra exercise that the hill provided.
My attitude to the hill has now changed. I used to complain as I approached it but now I tell myself the following. This hill will exercise my heart and lungs. It will help me to lose weight and get fit. It will mean that I live longer. This hill is my friend. Finally I comfort myself with the thought of all those silly people who pay money to go to a gym and sit on stationary exercise bicycles when I can do the moving exercise bike. But I get the same value for free. I have a smile of satisfaction as I reach the top of the hill.
Problems are there to be faced and overcome. We cannot achieve anything with an easy life. Helen Keller was the first deaf and blind person to gain a university degree. Her activism and writing proved inspirational.
One of the main determinants (决定因素) of success in life is our attitude towards adversity (逆境) . From time to time, we all face hardships, problems, accidents and difficulties. Even we meet some adversities which we may make, but we overcome them. While we cannot choose the adversity, we can choose our attitude towards it.
Douglas Bader was 21 when in 1931 he had both legs cut off following a flying accident. He was determined to fly again and went on to become one of the leading flying aces (佼佼者) in the Battle of Britain with 22 aerial victories over the Germans. He was inspiration to others during the war.
The biographies of great people are full of examples of how they took steps to overcome the difficulties they faced. The common character is that they did not become depressed. They chose their attitude. They chose to be positive. They took on the challenge. They won.

58. What's the meaning of the underlined word "stationary" in Paragraph 2? (No more than 5 words)

根据文章第二段的“Our modern society is terribly confused about the difference between a celebrity (名人) and a hero.(我们的现代社会对于名人和英雄之间的区别非常困惑。)”可知,作者说出我们对“名人和英雄的区别”很困惑,所以接下来讲到了“A celebrity is all about fame (名望)-temporary, superficial fame, usually for qualities that are easy to see: a pretty face, a great dance move. A hero, by contrast, is about character-qualities under the surface that aren’t visible until they take action.(名人就是名声——暂时的、superfacial名声,通常是因为那些显而易见的品质:漂亮的脸蛋、出色的舞姿。相比之下,英雄是指在他们采取行动之前才会显现出来的隐藏在表面之下的性格品质。)”,这是对这种区别的阐述,所以作者写第二段的目的是讨论名人与英雄的区别。故选B。
【47题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段的“usually for qualities that are easy to see: a pretty face, a great dance move(通常是那些显而易见的品质:漂亮的脸蛋,很棒的舞步)”可知,名人所谓的名声是肤浅的,没有深度的,superficial的意思是“没有深度的”,和without depth意思相近,故选D。
根据文章第三段“They truly hold our world together, through their unselfish devotion to helping others, teaching children, and protecting the environment. They don’t want fame, or glory; they just want to help. In so many ways, these unsung heroes pilot the boat in which all of us sail.(他们无私地致力于帮助他人、教育孩子和保护环境,真正地将我们的世界团结在一起。他们不需要名声或荣耀;他们只是想帮忙。在许多方面,这些无名英雄为我们所有人的航船领航。)”可知,英雄在这个世界上发挥着积极着作用,推动着世界积极的运转。故选A。
根据文章第五段中的“How do we help young people believe in their own power? The best way is simply to share examples, of other young people who have made a difference.(我们如何帮助年轻人相信自己的力量?最好的方法就是分享其他做出改变的年轻人的例子。)”可知,作者想用分享年轻人用自己的力量做出有影响的事的例子,来论证自己的观点。接下来两段分别列举Ryan和Barbara两位年轻人的事例,来说明年轻人具有成为英雄的潜力。再根据最后一段“The list could continue. These are but a few examples of young people who have discovered that they can build on their own energy to do something great.(这样的例子还有很多。这些只是年轻人发现自己可以利用自己的精力做一些伟大事情的几个例子。)”可知,作者就是用举例的方式来进一步阐述自己观点。故选C。
【50题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第一段的“While most people understand the importance of the first two wishes, the third one leaves some folks wondering why young people’s belief in their own power is so essential.(虽然大多数人都明白前两个愿望的重要性,但第三个愿望让一些人想知道,为什么年轻人相信自己的力量如此重要。)”和最后一段的“These are but a few examples of young people who have discovered that they can build on their own energy to do something great.(这些只是年轻人发现自己可以利用自己的精力做一些伟大事情的几个例子。)”
C 52. A 53. C 54. D 55. B
根据第一段“Many college and universities offer a variety of student clubs and organizations where both foreign-born and native American students have a greater chance of meeting people with shared interests. (许多学院和大学都提供各种各样的学生俱乐部和组织,在这些俱乐部和组织中,外国出生的和美国本土的学生都有更大的机会结识有共同兴趣的人)”可知,在美国,学生可以通过加入俱乐部找到兴趣相同的朋友。因此,在美国,学生找到兴趣相同的朋友的方式是C项“joining the student clubs(加入学生俱乐部)”符合题意,故选C项。
【52题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“…they should actively seek people with shared interests (……他们应该积极寻找有共同兴趣的人)”可知,他们的困难是在与人交往方面,他们可以通过结交兴趣相投的朋友来培养自己的社交能力。因此,第7行,第1段“people feel separated from the social aspects of American college life”这句话意味着他们在A项“communicating with others on the campus(与校园内的其他人交流)”有困难,符合题意,故选A项。
根据第二段“Foreign or immigrant students may feel confused during the first few weeks at a new school because they do not understand the system and are not willing to ask questions. (外国或移民学生在新学校的最初几周可能会感到困惑,因为他们不了解该系统,也不愿意提出问题。)”可知,他们是由于对新教育制度体系不熟悉而感到困惑。因此,一些外国学生刚上大学时,可能会感到困惑,因为是C项“they are faced with an unfamiliar educational system(他们面临着一个陌生的教育体系)”符合题意,故选C项。
根据第二段该句的表语部分“…are those who can solve problems by taking the initiative to ask questions, locate resources, and experience new social situations. (……是那些能够通过主动提出问题、找到资源和体验新的社会情境来解决问题的学生)”可知,“learning the ropes”指的是那些指能解决问题的人。因此, 与“learning the ropes”(第6行,第2段)一词的含义最接近的是D项“knowing how to handle problems (知道如何处理问题)”符合题意,故选D项。
因此,从这篇文章中我们可以得出结论,外国学生是B项“may face some problems in adjusting to American college life(在适应美国大学生活方面可能面临一些问题)”符合题意,故选B项。
They won.
56. What is the attitude of the author's friend towards the big hill? (No more than 10 words)
________________
57. What is the main idea of Paragraph 2? (No more than 10 words)

________________
60. What attitude will you take towards difficulties in life? Why? (No more than 20 words)
________________
56. Be glad of the extra exercise that the hill provided.
57. The author’s attitude to the hill has now changed.
58. Not moving.
59. To show great people have an positive attitude towards adversity.
60. I usually take a positive attitude towards difficulties for I can take steps to overcome them with a positive mind.
根据第一段“I often cycle two miles from my house to the town centre but unfortunately there is a big hill on the route…He explained that I should be glad of the extra exercise that the hill provided.(我经常从我家骑车两英里到市中心,但不幸的是路上有一座山。……他解释说,我应该为小山提供的额外锻炼感到高兴。)”可知,作者的朋友觉得作者应该为小山提供的额外锻炼感到高兴。故答案为Be glad of the extra exercise that the hill provided.
根据第二段“My attitude to the hill has now changed. I used to complain as I approached it but now I tell myself the following.(我对这座山的态度现在变了。过去每当我接近它的时候,我常常抱怨,但现在我告诉自己以下事情。)”可知,第二段主要讲述作者对那座山的态度发生了很大的改变,以及讲述改变的内容。故答案为The author’s attitude to the hill has now changed.
划线词所在句“Finally I comfort myself with the thought of all those silly people who pay money to go to a gym and sit on stationary exercise bicycles when I can do the moving exercise bike.(最后,我安慰自己,想到那些愚蠢的人花钱去健身房,坐在固定的运动自行车上,而我却可以坐移动的运动自行车。)” Not moving.
根据最后一段“The biographies of great people are full of examples of how they took steps to overcome the difficulties they faced. The common character is that they did not become depressed. They chose their attitude. To show great people have an positive attitude towards adversity.
也可以参考文章中的观点,如最后一段“The biographies of great people are full of examples of how they took steps to overcome the difficulties they faced. The common character is that they did not become depressed. They chose their attitude. They chose to be positive.(伟人的传记中充满了他们如何采取措施克服所面临困难的例子。他们的共同特点是没有变得消沉。他们选择了自己的态度。他们选择了积极的态度。)”,该段讲述伟人面对困难时的态度。所以我们只有积极面对困难,才能走出困境,拥有不一样的人生。故参考答案为I usually take an positive attitude towards difficulties for I can take steps to overcome them with a positive mind.

Dear Tom,
I am sorry to hear that you were in low spirits after you did not do well in your learning ancient Chinese poems. What was worse, you lost heart and no longer studied as hard as before.
Actually we always meet problems in learning Chinese poems, which are the essence of Chinese culture. However, why don't you take an active attitude towards the temporary trouble? By encouraging ourselves and reading more poems loudly, we will find the sense of language so that we could no longer feel it challenging.
Just as the old saying goes, practice makes perfect. Only with more practice can we harvest/reap the fruit of success.
Yours,
Li Hua
