Last night, my 6-year-old son taught me a valuable lesson that stayed with me for hours. I had been busy with work and had not spent much time with him recently. Even though he is only six and can be a bit stubborn, he is growing up fast — and that night he taught me something I didn’t expect.
While I was eating dinner, he was in the bath, and suddenly he started crying. I asked him what happened, and he said, “Shampoo (洗发水) got in my eyes.”
I got really worried and rushed into the bathroom. I tried to help by splashing water on his eyes, but things got worse when he rubbed his eyes with his soapy hands. I was nervous, telling him not to use his hands.
Out of the blue, he said, “Calm down, Dad!” It amazed me. I realized I was making things worse. I stopped splashing water, washed his hands, and calmly told him to cup clean water in his hands and rinse his eyes while blinking. It worked, and he felt better.
I’m not sure where he learned to stay calm, maybe from me or somewhere else. But the bigger lesson is that when we face problems, acting emotionally and quickly might not be best. Staying calm and thinking about the right solution is better.
In today’s tough job market with many people losing their jobs, it’s easy to feel worried. My son’s lesson reminded me that staying calm and taking a moment to relax can help us face challenges with a clear mind, more energy, and better solutions.
24. What happened to the author’s son last night?
A. He argued with his dad.
B. He fell in the bathroom.
C. He got angry due to the meal.
D. He got shampoo in his eyes.
25. Why did the situation get worse?
A. The boy rubbed his eyes with soapy hands.
B. The father left the bathroom.
C. The boy refused to wash his face.
D. The father used the wrong shampoo.
26. What does the underlined phrase “out of the blue” mean?
A. Secretly B. Suddenly C. Naturally D. Confusedly
27. What does the author’s experience show?
A. Children need more independence. B. Parents know their children best.
C. Calm thinking leads to better solutions. D. Difficulties make people stronger.
C
It’s concert season. For us, that means a walk around the block comes with the songs of birds. The trees become a stage for this music that starts after the snow has disappeared and lasts until late summer.
One evening, I was washing dishes and opened the window to listen. The kitchen soon filled up with bird songs. But as I continued cleaning, I heard a different sound. It was loud and kept going. Looking out, I noticed two blue jays (蓝松鸦) sitting on the branches of a newly planted tree in the neighbor’s yard. One was calling loudly while the other stayed still.
A moment later, I noticed one jay still had not moved. The other bird was flying around, trying to pull something from the branch with its beak (喙). When I looked more carefully, I saw that one jay was caught in a piece of string (细绳), probably left from the young tree when it was planted earlier that spring. It had likely been collecting materials for their home before getting caught. The other bird was trying hard to free its mate (配偶) by pulling at the string.
I was deeply moved by the bird’s action. When it became clear that the bird could not get free, I called our neighbor and offered to help. We took a ladder and some tools to the tree. We carefully cut the string from the bird’s foot. Then we stepped back. At first the jay stayed still. A moment later, it suddenly flew away to join its mate. Our first bird rescue had been a success!
Nature teaches us simple lessons when we stop and pay attention. Like the blue jays, when we get “stuck”, we can depend on a friend for help, or just keep singing until a stranger shows up with a ladder.
28. What drew the author’s attention to the yard?
A. A seasonal concert. B. A strange noise.
C. A newly planted tree. D. A piece of string.
29. Why did the active blue jay pull the string?
A. To save its partner. B. To collect materials for its home.
C. To get help from humans. D. To protect its newly-built home.
30. What made the author save the bird?
A. Good knowledge in saving animals. B. Admiration for beautiful nature.
C. Encouragement from the neighbor. D. Respect for the birds’ efforts.
31. What would be the best title for the text?
A. A Birdwatcher B. A Chance Meeting
C. A Helping Hand in Need D. A Song from the Treetops

If the sound of a baby crying gets you red in the face, you’re not just imagining things. A new study has found that a baby’s cries — particularly those that signal pain — really do cause a hot redness in adults’ faces, perhaps as a way of launching us into action.
Without language, crying is a baby’s best shot at getting the help they need from their caregivers. But not every cry is the same. Cries that come from serious pain are much more disordered than the cries of low-level discomfort. Scientists call these “nonlinear phenomena” or NLPs.
Caregivers can usually differentiate (区别) between cries of ordinary discomfort and those NLPs, but it’s unclear exactly how our bodies arrive at this higher-order conclusion. A team led by Dr. Laurent Moreau from Jean Monnet University wanted to know how these sounds affect adults’ nervous systems (神经系统) and the bodily effects they cause.
They tested the reactions of 41 participants (21 men, 20 women, aged 35 years old on average) to the sounds of babies crying. These adults listened to a selection of 23 audio (音频) tracks, recorded from 16 different babies while they were either experiencing the discomfort of a bath, or the pain of a vaccination shot at the doctor. As the participants listened, a heat camera tracked changes to their face temperature. An increase in heat from this part of the body is a response from the nervous system, which manages uncontrollable bodily functions such as heart rate and breathing.
The results showed that a cry with a higher level of NLP caused a stronger redness response from listeners’ faces, suggesting that these messy sounds are much more effective at getting the attention of adults, on a bodily level, than cries with little or no NLP.
“While our results sound interesting and new, this study remains rather basic and raises a number of questions about the methods used in the experiment.” Dr. Moreau notes.
32. Which of the following is an NLP in babies’ cries?
A. Cries out of the pain of a dog bite.
B. Cries out of boredom with toys.
C. Cries from restlessness when held.
D. Cries from refusing to drink milk.
33. Why did Dr. Moreau’s team conduct the research?
A. To test if pain makes cries longer.
B. To learn why adults can differentiate cries.
C. To see how cries affect the adults’ nerves.
D. To compare men’s and women’s responses.
34. How was the research carried out?
A. By observing babies’ discomfort behaviors.
B. By having participants describe feelings.
C. By measuring heart rate and recording breathing.
D. By playing audios and tracking face temperature.
35. What may the study team focus on next?
A. Studying more baby cries. B. Improving the study methods.
C. Exploring adults’ nervous systems. D. Managing participants’ bodily functions.

We are taught to see “gossip (八卦)” as a bad habit. However, talking about other people is a natural and important part of our life. Long ago, gossip worked like our earliest social media. In the old days, people shared useful news this way, such as who we could trust or where to get nice food. Even now, it helps us make friends and build trust. 36 There is just a small difference between sharing useful news and saying something hurtful. To chat in a good way, we need to follow simple rules and learn “polite gossip”.
First, only talk about facts. We can only speak of words we actually heard and actions we really saw. If you start guessing others’ hidden ideas or invent small details to make the story more fun, you are not talking politely anymore. 37
Second, know what we cannot talk about. 38 Topics like classmates’ looks, family troubles or health problems should never come up in casual talks. If someone is having a hard time, they need our care, not gossip behind their backs.
Third, separate people from their mistakes. People may do silly or careless things, but that does not mean they are bad people. 39 We all make mistakes and have bad moments. When we talk about one thing, we should focus on the action itself instead of speaking badly of a person’s personality.
Finally, keep the golden rule: 40 This is the final test of our conscience (良知). If you and that person change places, will you think this talk is fair? Or will you feel sad? If we keep kind and fair hearts, we can share stories without hurting anyone.
A. However, not all gossip is the same.
B. Therefore, we must respect other people.
C. Real harm requires direct action rather than secret talks.
D. There are some personal things we should never discuss.
E. It is important to listen carefully to what our friends tell us.
F. We should stick to what really happened, not what we imagine.
G. Don’t talk about others in ways you would hate others to talk about you.

The math class was going on. The classroom was very quiet, with only the sound of pens moving across paper. While most students sat up straight and took careful notes, Fahim dropped deeper into his seat. He looked at the blackboard, but the numbers and graph lines just looked like a big mess. To get away from the confusing symbols on the blackboard, he drew little pictures in his notebook. Soon, his eyes fell on the test paper that had just been given back. He got only four points out of ten. The score troubled him deeply. Fahim crumpled (弄皱) the paper and pushed it into his schoolbag, wishing he could hide his sadness together with it.
After class, Fahim was called to the teacher’s office, with the crumpled test paper in his hand. He was ready to get blamed (责备). To his great surprise, Ms. Smith spoke to him in a soft voice. For the first time, Fahim dared to share his true feelings. He told the teacher honestly about his confusion and worries. He felt so comfortable to speak out his thoughts.
Ms. Smith looked at him for a moment and then noticed the crumpled paper. She asked if Fahim enjoyed reading books. Fahim nodded, wondering what the teacher was going to do next. Soon, Ms. Smith took a book out of her bag. Its title was A Mind for Numbers. The book was written for students who liked art and English but feared numbers. Fahim picked up the book and turned it around slowly. On the back cover, there was some information about the author, who was not good at this subject when she was at school. However, she made great progress years later by thinking in a different way. With a soft smile, Ms. Smith told Fahim that math could be explained in a way that he could follow.

读后续写
Taking the book home, Fahim felt a little hope rise in his heart. In the following days, Fahim was glued to the book. It explained math in a simple and interesting way, connecting it to art and patterns he already loved. He followed the author’s advice and started drawing pictures to understand difficult math problems and connecting numbers with real-life stories. Slowly but surely, the confusing symbols on the blackboard began to make sense. He no longer drew pictures in class but focused on listening and taking notes, turning fear into curiosity and making steady progress.
Two months later, it was time for another test. When the math paper was handed out, Fahim took a deep breath and picked up his pen with confidence. As he read through the questions, he was surprised to find that they didn’t look like a foreign language anymore. He remembered Ms. Smith’s encouragement and the book’s methods, using them to work out each problem step by step. When the results finally came out, Fahim scored eight out of ten. He smiled brightly, knowing that with the right methods and a willing heart, he could overcome any difficulty.

W: I agree. I know it’s hard to keep the water exactly the right temperature in this lab, but you can see the difference in the fish.
M: Yeah, we’ve had some differences in the water temperature, especially at night.
W: I think we should write our lab report as soon as possible.

W: OK. I see your point. Are these the notes you took yesterday?
M: Yep.
W: Do you mind if I copy them? I can’t seem to find my notebook.
M: Go right ahead.
Text 10
Well, we certainly have a busy day ahead of us, so let’s get started, shall we? Let’s have a look at the map of the museum now.
The door on the right of the entrance hall leads into the gift shop and ticket center. Once we pick up our entrance tickets, I’d ask everyone to put their bags and coats in the storage area.
Now, once you come back into the entrance hall, the door on the opposite side to the gift shop leads into the art gallery. There is a special exhibition there at the moment. If you continue on up the entrance hallway that leads into the main exhibition center, on the back left-hand side, there are some toilets. Beside the toilets, you’ll find the 3D theater. I strongly recommend that you make time for the 30-minute presentation in the theater.
Running along the right-hand side of the main exhibition center is the Modern Art Studio. Here, not only can you view some of the most famous works of the 20th century, but you can also attend a workshop run by a local artist. OK, that’s the art museum.
