Ideas of making the first week of high school easy
Frank, Aged 21
I think almost every kid feels both nervous and excited before their first day of high school. You will probably love it. I know I did. You should join some sports or activities that will make your high school experience more enjoyable. Good luck!
Sharon, Aged 22
The most important thing to keep in mind when going into high school is to be yourself. Besides, I don’t know what your middle school was like, but high school teachers will not care about things such as how much homework you already have in one night. It’s best to learn to deal with things and manage your time wisely so you can achieve everything you need to do.
Eddie, Aged 20
When I started high school, I was really nervous too, especially since I had been homeschooled (家中教学) all through middle school and didn’t really know anyone. I suppose the best advice would be to just relax. The first couple of days can be a little bit hard, but things will become easier before you know it.
David, Aged 19
I’m not going to lie. The first day is kind of frightening. But you’ll get used to it. Don’t be afraid of anyone; upperclassmen (高年级学生) will pick on you more if you let them know you’re afraid. Just take it easy. Making some friends and staying with them will greatly help you get used to high school quickly. After the first week it’s really not bad at all. Don’t worry.

A Teachers are quite strict.
B. Students often stay up at night.

During his first year at Stanford, Trace Guzmán won a part in a short film — a comedy about college girls — directed by an upperclass student engaged in the film and media studies program. At the end of a 12-hour day on the set of The Ice Queen Society, which was shot on campus, Guzmán realised that he could happily continue for hours on end.
“I remember thinking this was the best thing in the world,” he said. “Then I stopped and thought, ‘oh, this is what it feels like to do something you love.’ That was the moment I fell in love with acting.”
Guzmán pursued his newfound passion in the classroom through film studies courses,as well as classes on screenwriting and script analysis (脚本分析). His favourite class was “Writing the Television Pilot”. To develop comedy writing skills outside the classroom, Guzmán joined the Robber Barons, and the students sketched a comedy group that performed in the Geology Corner Auditorium. As a junior, Guzmán spent the winter quarter studying in Madrid with fellow Stanford students through the Bing Overseas Studies Program.
Guzmán,who was planning to move to Los Angeles to make a career in acting, said he would miss the stimulating conversations and intellectual enthusiasm of Stanford. But he was ready for the next stage of his life and the opportunity to use his art for good.
“I’m a Stanford student and I might shoot too high sometimes,” he said. “Obviously, it’s a cliché (陈词滥调) to say I want to make a change in the world. But that’s a beautiful thing — something a lot of Stanford students want to do. And I think that’s wonderful.”
4. What inspired Guzmán to study acting?
A. His love of watching films.
B. His acting experience.
C. The film and media studies program.
D. Encouragement of college girls.
5. Why did Guzmán join the Robber Barons?
A. To make a film. B. To learn script analysis.
C. To work as a comedian. D. To improve his writing skills.
6. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. Guzmán’s plan. B. Guzmán’s effort.
C. Guzmán’s hobbies. D. Guzmán’s achievement.
7. Which of the following best describes Guzmán?
A. Adventurous. B. Humorous.
C. Ambitious. D. Outgoing.

The Pomodoro technique is probably one of the most powerful techniques in all of learning. All you have to do is set a timer for 25 minutes, and then just focus as attentively as you can for those 25 minutes.
Now if you start focusing on what you’re working on, and then you look up at the timer and two minutes have passed, you may feel like you can’t hold on. And just let the thought go by, and return your focus to whatever you are working on. And when that 25 minutes is up you relax a little bit. You might wonder why that 25 minutes is the magic number, and the reality is we don’t really know. There’s not a lot of research on the Pomodoro technique, which is surprising because it’s so incredibly popular and people find it very useful.
But there’s an interesting tidbit related to the Pomodoro technique, and that is that: when you just think about something that you don’t like very much, it stimulates a part of the brain that experiences pain. And so the brain naturally enough shifts its attention to something else, like Facebook or Twitter or something like that.
And what does the Pomodoro technique do? When you do it you’re setting that timer. You don’t want to sit there and think, “I’m going to work on this problem and get it all finished.” You just want to think, “I’ve got 25 minutes where I just have to work on something.” Don’t even think about what that something is. What that does is it slips in under your brain’s radar. It doesn’t stimulate so much that pain in your brain; and then that pain in the brain, research has shown, lasts for 20 minutes.
So if you work for 25 minutes you will suddenly find yourself getting into the flow because you’ve gone past that painful period. So the Pomodoro technique is effective in many different aspects.
8. Which is an example of using the Pomodoro technique?
A. Reading a novel for 25 minutes.
B. Spending 25 minutes scanning WeChat.
C. Setting a timer for 25 minutes to do a tough task.
D. Attending a lecture for 25 minutes with two minds.
9. What can be inferred about the Pomodoro technique from Paragraph 2?
A. You may get discouraged when using it.
B. The first two minutes is extremely important.
C. You keep relaxed for 25 minutes.
D. More research is around the corner.
10. Why is the tidbit mentioned in Paragraph 3?
A. To prove the effectiveness of the Pomodoro technique.
B. To arouse interest in the Pomodoro technique.
C. To show how to use the Pomodoro technique.
D. To further explain the Pomodoro technique.
11. How does the Pomodoro technique work?
A. It improves your concentration.
B. It helps your mind go faster.
C. It urges you to finish your work.
D. It shortens the pain time in your brain.

Olympic athletes pour everything into training for the Games, usually pushing their physical and mental bounds to the limit — and beyond — for a shot at a gold medal. Yet they are often accompanied by an emotional breakdown.
Emotions (feelings) are heightened by the nature of the event itself. The Olympics is a massive cultural event — a combination of global public attention, financial investment and media coverage. New international celebrities(famous men) are created, and some competitors’ fame is ruined during various accusations. Athletes are under the pressure of representing their country and winning medals in front of worldwide audience. “But then all of that publicity and intensity around being an Olympian falls off very quickly,” says Cogan, a lead sport psychologist. It’s more about making a map of how to get to a destination. Once you get there, it’s like, “Now what?”
A 2023 paper explained the identity crises (身份危机) athletes face as a result of overfocus on performance, leaving their non-sporting personalities underdeveloped. In a 2018 paper, Howells wrote that athletes with a greater “myopic” focus are more in danger of the “blues”. “It is common for top competitors to have this very high athletic identity,” says Howells. “They’ve sacrificed (牺牲) every other aspect of their identity for the purpose of being an Olympian. They seem unable to realize that their actions might have negative results in the future.”
Efforts to minimize this mindset have helped some athletes to open up more about their mental health. Experts advise Olympians to start conversations about mental health support well before the Games begin. Olympians should also discuss mental health monitoring strategies before, during and after the Games. Athletes and experts say the sporting industry has, in the last ten years, been promoting better work-life balance outside of the game. Briana, a soccer goalkeeper, says that her team and coaches actively encourage spending quality time with families and friends, as well as finding hobbies that feel joyful and rewarding.
12. What is the main cause for Olympic athletes’ mental breakdown?
A. A sense of loss. B. The pressure of competition.
C. The media coverage. D. The audience’s attention.
13. What does the underlined word “myopic” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Unbelievable. B. All-around.
C. Short-sighted. D. Unexpected.
14. What might be a good solution to the athletes’ identity crisis?
A. Having higher athletic identity.
B. Developing a sense of identity outside the sport.
C. Discussing their problems publicly.
D. Making greater achievements in sporting industry.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. From Bad to Worse: Athletes’ Well-being
B. From Hero to Zero: the Post-Olympic Blues
C. Olympic Athletes Challenging Gold Medals
D. Olympic Athletes Suffering from Stress

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was a sunny Friday afternoon. My assignment was to record the 400-meter race in the sports meet. All the students in our class were sitting anxiously except one, a tall handsome boy named Tommy who was considered the one most likely to win the race. Even, unlike other competitors, he was quite relaxed, standing beside the track and stretching himself.
“Tommy! I bet you’ll win.” I yelled at him. “Just wait and see!” A big smile spread across his face.
“May I have your attention, please? All the athletes are requested to proceed to the registration office.” A gentle voice caught our attention.
“Tommy, your show time!” I shouted and gave him a thumb-up.
Then, I saw all the athletes went to register, preparing for the game. Soon they were all on the starting line. Taking the best recording location, I raised my smartphone, ready to shoot.
With the loud sound of the starting gun, all the competitors threw themselves forwards from the starting line like arrows. Tommy quickly took the lead with his excellent explosive power from long-term training. But there was one problem for me-I had to spare every effort to control my excitement in order to keep my shooting picture stable.
“Come on, Tommy!” Still, I could hear the cheers of our classmates higher and higher. It seemed that Tommy had heard the powerful shouts and became full of strength. He kept adjusting his breath, maintaining a steady rhythm, and approaching the finish line step by step.
Finally, with the cheers of the audience, Tommy crossed the finish line almost at the same time with the second-place finisher. How I wish I could rush to him and give him a big bear hug! But I could not. I had to finish recording the whole race, so I waited until the last competitor crossed the finish line. Suddenly, I noticed there was an unusual noise from the crowd.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 左右:
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

【答案】12. A 13. C 14. B 15. B

【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“‘But then all of that publicity and intensity around being an Olympian falls off very quickly,’ says Cogan, a lead sport psychologist. It’s more about making a map of how to get to a destination. Once you get there, it’s like, ‘Now what?’(‘但是,作为一名奥运选手所受到的关注和压力很快就会消失,’首席运动心理学家Cogan说。这更像是绘制一张如何到达目的地的地图。一旦你到达那里,就会想,‘接下来呢?’)”可知,奥运会运动员精神崩溃的主要原因是失落感。故选A。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段“A 2023 paper explained the identity crises (身份危机) athletes face as a result of overfocus on performance, leaving their non-sporting personalities underdeveloped. In a 2018 paper, Howells wrote that athletes with a greater ‘myopic’ focus are more in danger of the ‘blues’.(2023年的一篇论文解释了运动员面临的身份危机,这是由于过度关注表现,导致他们的非体育个性不发达。Howells在2018年的一篇论文中写道,“myopic”程度更高的运动员患‘忧郁’的风险更大。)”以及划线词后“They’ve sacrificed (牺牲) every other aspect of their identity for the purpose of being an Olympian. They seem unable to realize that their actions might have negative results in the future.(为了成为一名奥运选手,他们牺牲了自己身份的所有其他方面。他们似乎没有意识到他们的行为可能会在未来产生负面影响。)”可知,此处指过度关注眼前的表现,而忽视自己身份的所有其他方面的奥运会运动员,更容易忧郁。myopic意为“目光短浅的”。故选C。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Athletes and experts say the sporting industry has, in the last ten years, been promoting better work-life balance outside of the game. 【15题详解】

Yet they are often accompanied by an emotional breakdown.(奥运会运动员为了奥运会倾尽全力进行训练,通常会把自己的身体和精神极限推向极限,甚至超越极限,只为争夺金牌。然而,它们往往伴随着情绪崩溃)”和第二段中“‘But then all of that publicity and intensity around being an Olympian falls off very quickly,’ says Cogan, a lead sport psychologist. It’s more about making a map of how to get to a destination. Once you get there, it’s like, ‘Now what?’(‘但是,作为一名奥运选手所受到的关注和压力很快就会消失,”首席运动心理学家Cogan说。

Today, I stand before you to advocate for the benefits of group study over solo study.
Firstly, it takes advantage of collective intelligence. Each group member contributes unique ideas, leading to a comprehensive understanding of the subject. Secondly, it builds a sense of responsibility. Knowing others rely on you motivates you to be consistent and diligent, which is crucial for long-term academic success. Lastly, group study improves communication and teamwork skills, which are invaluable both in school and beyond.

【答案】范文
Tommy was ranked second on the scoreboard. Feeling puzzled, Tommy immediately found the judge and pointed out this mistake politely. However, the second-place finisher insisted he was the winner. No one could tell exactly what had happened. Tommy was at a loss what to do, feeling frustrated. Then it suddenly occurred to me that I had recorded the whole process. Rushing to the judge, I showed him the video, which clarified the fact that it was Tommy who first arrived.
The judge admitted the error and announced Tommy was the real champion. After learning the truth, the audience broke into thunderous applause. Tommy shouldered his way through the crowd, gate ring me in his arms with a proud smile on his face. We both knew this was not just a victory of a race, but also a victory of sticking to the truth and daring to fight for it in the face of injustice.
