1. Ss can master key vocabulary and phrases such as "used to do sth.", "be covered with", and "It takes (sb) some time to do sth."

2. Ss can catch key information about changes in a town (traffic, public facilities, environment) from the listening conversations.

3. Ss can talk about the past and present of a place using the target language.

4. Ss can use prediction strategies based on pictures before listening.

5. Ss can use a structured outline to compare the past and present, and organize information logically.

Teaching Procedures:

 

Step 1. Lead - in

1). Play a short video about Yucun village. Ask Ss: "What's the video talking about? How has the village changed?"

2). Show two contrasting photos. Ask Ss: "How are these two photos different? Why do you think these places changed so much?"

3). Guide Ss to share how their own hometown has changed over time to activate their background knowledge and interest.

 

Step 2. Pre - listening

1). Show the photos in 1a. Ask Ss to observe the changes in Li Rui's hometown.

2). Guide Ss to describe the differences using adjectives (e.g., "dry/barren" vs. "green/thriving/hopeful").

3). Ask Ss to guess the relationship between the speakers and predict what they will talk about (George and Li Rui).

 

Step 3. While - listening

1). 1st listening (1b): Let Ss listen to the telephone conversation and answer three questions.

   - Q1: Why does George call Li Rui? (Answer: To tell Li Rui that he and his father are going to visit Li Rui's hometown and ask Li Rui to be their guide.)

   - Q2: When did George's father last visit the place? (Answer: 20 years ago.)

   - Q3: What is the relationship between George's father and Li Rui's grandfather? (Answer: They are good friends.)

2). Language focus: Underline the parts showing the present perfect tense in the listening script. Explain the multiple usages of the word "last" (adjective, adverb, verb).
