I joined our school running club because I wanted to win. During my first practice, I tried to follow the fastest runner. Within minutes, however, I was far ____1____ the group. I stopped beside a tree and pretended to tie my shoes. In fact, I was hiding how ____2____ I felt.
My coach, Ms Grant, waited for me. I expected a speech about working harder. Instead, she asked, “What are you trying to ____3____ today?” “That I can keep up,” I answered. She pointed to the path ahead. “You have only just started. Why compare your first page with someone else’s tenth chapter?”
The next week, she helped me make a different ____4____. I would run at a speed I could manage, rather than race against everyone around me. At first, running more slowly seemed like moving ____5____ from my goal. Yet I could now finish the route without stopping. For the first time, I noticed the trees along the path.
Some days were still difficult. When I had a bad run, Ms Grant asked me to look at my notes instead of making a quick ____6____ about my ability. One difficult afternoon did not cancel the weeks of practice behind it. I learnt to notice changes over time, not just the ____7____ of a single day.
At the school race, I did not come first. Near the end, I heard a younger runner breathing heavily behind me. I slowed a little and encouraged him. We crossed the line together. I had once imagined that success meant ____8____ other people. That day, it also meant helping someone continue.
I still want to become faster. ____9____, I no longer let one race decide what I think of myself. Running has taught me that progress needs both effort and ____10____: effort to keep going, and the willingness to give myself time to grow.

When the cast list(演员表) for the school play appeared, Mara looked for her name near the top. Instead, she found it under “Sound”. She had hoped to be the traveller with the long speech. Now her job was to make rain, wind and footsteps while other students stood in the lights.
“You can still tell the story,” her teacher said. Mara nodded, but she did not believe him. At the first rehearsal(排练), she played the storm sound too early. The actors laughed and started again. Mara kept her head down. For a moment, she wanted to leave the room and never return.
Afterwards, the leading actor, Nikhil, stayed behind. “Could we practise that scene together?” he asked. Mara thought he was going to complain. Instead, he explained that he sometimes paused before a difficult line. If she waited for his movement rather than the clock, the storm would begin at the right moment.
They practised several times. Mara began to watch faces and hands, not just the page. She also learnt to keep a quiet sound ready when an actor needed more time. Her work became less about pressing buttons and more about listening to the whole play.
On the performance night, Nikhil suddenly forgot a line. The stage went silent. Mara remembered that his character was waiting for a visitor. She made three gentle knocks. Nikhil looked towards the imaginary door, took a breath, and continued. The audience had no idea that anything had gone wrong.
At the end, Mara stood behind the curtain while everyone clapped. Then Nikhil stepped aside and pointed towards her. She walked into the light, surprised by the warm applause(掌声). Later, she asked to operate the sound for the next play. She still liked acting, but she no longer believed that a part had to be seen to matter.
14. Why was Mara unhappy when she first saw the cast list?
A. She disliked working with Nikhil. B. She wanted to act on stage.
C. She thought the play was too long. D. She could not understand the story.
15. What did Nikhil want Mara to do during practice?
A. Play every sound more loudly. B. Follow the clock more closely.
C. Remove the storm from the play. D. Watch his movement before the sound.
16. Why did Mara make the knocking sound on the performance night?
A. To help Nikhil return to the story. B. To tell the audience to remain quiet.
C. To signal that the play had ended. D. To ask the teacher to open the door.
17. What is the best title for the story?
A. The Fastest Way to Learn Lines B. A Speech That Nobody Remembered
C. A Part That Did Not Need the Spotlight D. The Night the School Play Was Cancelled
