Maggie Doyne is caring for and educating helpless children and orphans in rural Nepal. What started with a plot of land that she purchased with her babysitting money has become a global model for poverty relief (扶贫) and development through her nonprofit organization, BlinkNow Foundation.
After high school, Doyne began her work after meeting a young girl in Surkhet, Nepal (尼泊尔), whose life was ruined during the country’s decades-long civil conflict. Today, Doyne cares for 93 children, addressing their immediate needs and supporting them for long-term growth and self-sufficiency.
The organization also has a separate home for at-risk girls who have been victims of harm, human trafficking (贩卖) and violence, a food and farming program that trains women and farmers, and a full-service medical clinic. Doyne and a team of 175 caregivers, teachers, and professionals work together to offer comprehensive services that address the roots of poverty.
Her Kopila Valley School, once a small “bamboo shack (棚屋)”, has now served 1,000 students with state-of-the-art facilities, modern technology, and diverse course offerings. Students participate in gardening, farming, and conservation classes and are provided healthy meals to cope with poor nutrition. There is a daycare, as well as a readiness program called “Futures” to launch students toward college and job training programs.
At a speaking engagement in Los Angeles, Doyne connected with a filmmaker who shared a passion for humanitarian causes and storytelling. He started documenting Doyne’s work and life story. And the two began a journey together, professionally and personally. Now married, they raise their children in Nepal among their 93 siblings
Hope and action are ideas that Doyne made a reality two decades ago. And today, her message remains: “Keep doing what you can, no matter where you are. Keep showing up, keep loving, and keep going with your acts of kindness. It all matters.”
4. What inspired Doyne to start charity work in Nepal?
A. The money she earned in her first job. B. An encounter with a girl in Surkhet.
C. The model she learned from a school. D. A speech about global poverty relief.
5. Why does the writer mention the different branches of BlinkNow in paragraph 3?
A. To display diverse BlinkNow programs. B. To show serious problems children face.
C. To suggest Doyne’s thoughtful planning. D. To promote public support for the poor.
6. What is the “Futures” program intended for?
A. Training local women in farming skills. B. Offering medical treatment for poor girls.
C. Building modern classrooms for rural children. D. Preparing teenagers for further study and career.

C
Insects are disappearing. The world has 25 percent fewer terrestrial (陆生的) insects now than in 1990. This includes those we rely on to pollinate (授粉) our crops. If we don’t solve this problem very soon, some species will disappear.
There are many causes for the insect decline, but pesticides (杀虫剂) are a major part of the problem. Those used today are longer lasting and up to 10,000 times more poisonous than some that were banned in the 1970s. Adding to the problem is that these pesticides are now applied to crops as a precaution and used no matter whether pests are present or not.
Overall, the amount of pesticide applied to the land is decreasing, but this is an extremely misleading statistic. A recent paper found that, between 2005 and 2015, there was a 40 percent reduction in the amount of pesticide applied to crops measured by weight. But because modern pesticides are so much more poisonous, the global toxicity (毒性) of treated land to pollinating insects has more than doubled in the same period.
To the public, one broadly-publicized approach is to use pesticide-free pest (害虫) control methods. These varied techniques are gathered under the name of integrated pest management (IPM) and have been around for decades. They offer effective crop protection and include methods such as crop rotation (轮换) and the use of natural predators (掠食者). But their adoption has been incredibly slow, because spraying pesticides is viewed as an easier option. As a result, IPM methods are unfortunately seldom used today.
Without a quick fix, we argue instead that we need a small, subtle change in focus, away from killing pests and towards protecting crops. By using the minimal amount we need to protect crops, we could reduce the amount of pesticide to a tiny percentage of what is used today. Farmers would benefit from these changes. They would spend less money on pesticides and improve crop production by keeping healthy pollinator insects about. Reducing pesticide won’t solve the insect decline problem immediately, but it is a move that could win us time to make food production more sustainable and cultivate farmlands in a greener way. And that will allow insects to recover.
8. What about today’s pesticide is a problem?
A. It has only short-term effect. B. It is banned by the government.
C. It is abused regardless of necessity. D. It is less poisonous but more frequently used.
9. Why is IPM seldom used today?
A. It has been around for a long time. B. It takes advantage of other animals.
C. It is still unknown to the mass public. D. It is regarded as a complicated practice.
10. What may be the best solution according to the writer?
A. Developing new pesticides. B. Focusing on crop protection.
C. Raising healthier pollinators. D. Cultivating greener farmlands.
11. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To propose a practical shift of agricultural practice.
B. To present conflicting evidence about insect decline.
C. To criticize farmers for their over-reliance on spraying.
D. To warn readers of the hidden danger of modern pesticides.
C 9. D 10. B 11. A

根据第四段中的“But their adoption has been incredibly slow, because spraying pesticides is viewed as an easier option. As a result, IPM methods are unfortunately seldom used today.(但是它们的推广速度极其缓慢,因为喷洒杀虫剂被看作是一种更简单的选择)”可知,IPM很少被使用,是因为它被认为没有喷药简单,操作更复杂。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中的“Without a quick fix, we argue instead that we need a small, subtle change in focus, away from killing pests and towards protecting crops.(没有快速的解决办法,相反我们主张需要在关注点上做出微小而微妙的转变,从消灭害虫转向保护作物)”可知,作者认为最好的解决办法是把重心放在保护作物上。
D
A massive concrete-and-glass structure hangs above traffic on Wilshire Boulevard. It is the new home of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), the largest art museum in western America. Its daring architecture is not the only unusual thing about it.
“We’ve given up traditional categories of geography,” says Michael Govan, LACMA’s director. “The idea is to wander.” The museum’s single floor treats all artworks equally: no one movement is presented as more important than another. The museum is loosely organized around oceans to emphasize trade and cultural exchange. The Indian Ocean section, for example, includes Turkish ceramics (瓷器) with blue-and-white flower patterns, influenced by earlier Chinese designs.
LACMA’s break from conventional organization symbolizes a movement towards global galleries as the global economy expands. London’s Tate Modern traditionally centered on Western European art. However, it rearranged its works by theme after 2000 to highlight cultural links. The press hated it. In 2019, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) rejected fixed long-term displays. Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” will probably always be on view but the neighbouring wall will sometimes hold photography. Such an adaptable approach allows for unexpected encounters. Yet not everyone may appreciate it.
What is a thoughtful contrast to one visitor may be hard to understand for another. At LACMA a giant coffee table shows off ceramics from various eras. Why? Visitors who can scan QR codes will find out; the rest will merely wonder. But if such experiments fail to impress, curators (策展人) can rearrange the art again.
Museums should not be inflexible palaces for artworks, many curators argue: they should reflect their surroundings and times. At the new LACMA, says Govan, “We don’t go into a dark box and somebody tells us what to think.” Rather, it tries to be in conversation with Los Angeles (LA). Architecturally, the museum’s uneven shape and floor-to-ceiling windows frame the palm trees (棕榈树) and hills, putting LA itself on display.
12. What is special about the new LACMA?
A. Displaying artworks flexibly. B. Stressing ocean movement.
C. Treating artworks differently. D. Featuring Chinese designs.
13. Why does the writer mention Tate Modern and MoMA?
A. To compare them with LACMA. B. To highlight an exhibition trend.
C. To promote long-term displays. D. To explain economic globalization.
14. What is a potential problem with the new exhibition style?
A. It limits the variety of artworks. B. It depends on QR code technology.
C. It brings little profit to art galleries. D. It causes confusion for some visitors.
15. What can be inferred about the new museum from the last paragraph?
A. It values architecture over artworks. B. It may raise argument over art styles.
C. It can mirror environments and times. D. It guides how visitors view the art world.
A 13. B 14. D 15. C

根据第三段“LACMA’s break from conventional organization symbolizes a movement towards global galleries as the global economy expands. London’s Tate Modern traditionally centered on Western European art. However, it rearranged its works by theme after 2000 to highlight cultural links. The press hated it. In 2019, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) rejected fixed long-term displays.(洛杉矶郡艺术博物馆(LACMA)的组织方式突破传统,象征着在全球经济不断扩张的背景下,向全球性美术馆发展。伦敦泰特现代美术馆过去一直以西欧艺术为中心,但自2000年后,它根据主题重新编排展品,以突出文化联系。这一做法遭到媒体的批评。2019年,现代艺术博物馆(MoMA)也拒绝了长期固定展览模式)”可知,作者提到泰特现代美术馆和现代艺术博物馆是为了突出展览趋势。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“What is a thoughtful contrast to one visitor may be hard to understand for another. At LACMA a giant coffee table shows off ceramics from various eras. Why? Visitors who can scan QR codes will find out; the rest will merely wonder.(对一位访客而言,一个深思熟虑的对比可能难以被另一位理解。在洛杉矶县艺术博物馆(LACMA),一张巨大的咖啡桌陈列着不同时代的陶瓷作品。为什么?扫描二维码的游客会明白;其余人则只能感到纳闷)”可知,新展览风格可能存在的一个潜在问题是:它会让部分参观者感到困惑。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Museums should not be inflexible palaces for artworks, many curators argue: they should reflect their surroundings and times.(许多策展人认为,博物馆不应是僵化的艺术宫殿,而应反映其周围环境和时代背景)”可知,新博物馆能够反映环境和时代。

In the digital age, we interact with others online so much, so it’s especially important to be aware of digital etiquette (礼节). Here is something about digital etiquette you need to know.
Keep things respectful, truthful, and kind in your online interactions. When you’re commenting, posting, or sending a message on the Internet, remember that you’re interacting with actual people who have feelings and deserve respect. Treat others the way you would want to be treated. ____16____
Review messages, comments, and posts before sending. ____17____ Unfortunately, this often leads to hurt feelings, and you’ll often end up regretting it later — especially because what you say online is memorialized forever. To avoid this regret, it helps to pause and reflect before posting or sending something. As part of that reflection, reread what you’ve written, and make sure it’s truthful, respectful, and fair.
____18____ If you see a negative comment, you may be tempted to fight back with some heated words of your own. Though this may feel good in the moment, it only escalates things and makes them worse. Plus, unlike verbal arguments, online conversations can be preserved forever, so your words can come back to bite you in the future. ____19____
Be mindful of your audience. ____20____ The key is to adjust your behavior appropriately based on the relationship you have with the receiver and the purpose of your message. It’s appropriate to use informal language when you are sending a message in a group chat with your friends. If you’re posting a message in your online classroom for school, nevertheless, use proper spelling and punctuation, as well as more formal language.
A. Stay on topic in group chats.
B. Digital etiquette will vary from setting to setting.
C. Don’t engage in digital drama in the comment section.
D. In the heat of the moment, it’s easy to react too quickly.
E. This golden rule applies just as much online as it does in person.
F. The wisest response is to break the cycle with a positive comment.
G. What seems harmless to you may be embarrassing or unsafe for them.

The world of literature, with a wealth of characters, conflicts and settings, ____37____ (offer) readers a distinctive way to engage with lives beyond their own.
To begin with, since literary works often employ a rich and varied vocabulary, twisted plots and layered characterization, ____38____ (deal) with these elements helps readers expand their own vocabulary and develop an appreciation for the subtleties of human expression. Not only does such sustained engagement ____41____ (sharp) readers’ analytical skills, but it also enhances their capacity to hold conflicting ideas in mind at once.
Moreover, the narrative pull of a novel, ____42____ (combine) with its vivid settings and fully drawn characters, creates an immersive experience, ____43____ allows individuals to live unfamiliar lives and to process their own emotions at a safe distance. Empathy, insight and a sense of belonging fostered by literature can be felt whenever readers lose themselves in a story ____44____ (mirror) their own struggles. Furthermore, reading literature broadens cultural understanding, for writers draw _____45_____ their personal histories, traditions and communities to create worlds reflecting the full range of human experience.

空处需要非谓语动词作定语,be combined with是固定搭配,此处用过去分词作后置定语修饰the narrative pull of a novel。

Should art class be canceled?

Should art class be canceled?
Recently, our school has been considering canceling art classes for Senior 3 students. As a student who values holistic development, I firmly oppose this decision.
While we are under immense academic pressure, art classes serve as an effective outlet for stress relief, which is vital for mental well-being. Moreover, art education fosters creativity and aesthetic appreciation, qualities that are just as important as academic success. Canceling these classes would deprive us of a balanced education.
Therefore, I sincerely hope the school will reconsider and allow us to continue enjoying the beauty of art.

I am an English teacher. One cold evening on my way home from school, I noticed a small boy standing by a rubbish bin outside a noodle shop. He was thin and dirty, with a torn coat that looked two sizes too big for him, and his eyes followed every customer who walked out carrying a paper bowl. He did not beg; did not stretch out his hand; he only stood there, still and silent, as if waiting for something the world had long forgotten to give him. For a moment I hesitated. Then, instead of walking on like everyone else, I went over and asked gently whether he was hungry.
He looked up at me, his face pale in the lamplight, and after a long silence he gave a small, uncertain nod. I pushed open the door and led him to a corner table. I ordered two bowls of hot beef noodles and an extra egg for him. He ate slowly at first, as if afraid the food would disappear, then faster and faster, until his cheeks were full and his spoon scraped the bottom of the bowl.
When I asked his name, he whispered without looking up,“They call me Little Toby.” He would not tell me where he came from or why he was alone, and I did not push. When we finished, I paid the bill, and as I turned to go, he grabbed the corner of my coat and, without a word, pointed at the notebook sticking out of my pocket. I smiled and told him I used it to write down things worth remembering. He stared at the notebook for a long time, as if it held some secret, then let go of my coat and vanished into the dark street.
I walked home slowly, but the look in his eyes stayed with me all night. I could not stop thinking about that boy who noticed a notebook, of all things, in a world that seemed to notice nothing about him.

I read his poem repeatedly, and decided to give him one more gift.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
A few days later, I saw Toby again, holding a piece of paper. He hid half of the crumpled paper behind his back, ears red with cold, and handed it to me shyly. It was a short, misspelled poem about warm beef noodles and a stranger’s soft smile, which he had written down after watching me talk about my notebook. He mumbled that he had always wanted to write down the nice things no one had ever noticed, just like what my notebook did.
I read his poem repeatedly, and decided to give him one more gift. I took out a brand new notebook with a pen from my bag, and told him he could use it to write all the warm little moments he met. Later, I helped him find a temporary shelter, and let him sit in on my after-school free English classes. Years later, a young man knocked at my door, holding a published collection of poems — its author was Little Toby.
