For example, in one of the comics, the main character overcame a small everyday challenge with humor, while in the students’ novels, the characters were facing life-or-death situations. This contrast made students more aware of the gravity and complexity of the challenges in their own reading materials. By including visual texts in my literature circle unit, students were challenged to consider their books in a new light and to think more deeply about their characters. In his research, Matt Dann explored how approach and avoidance goals relate to procrastination. Typically, we define the more positively regarded approach goals as those things we intend to do to keep or acquire a positive state of affairs. If we anticipate that the task won’t be enjoyable and/or we aren’t capable of carrying it out, we’re likely to phrase it as an avoidance goal. Avoidance goals in turn lead to procrastination.
