【答案】17.A 18.A 19.C 20.B
W: The Worcester Public Library announced that through the end of March, people who have lost or damaged a book or other borrowed items can bring a photograph, drawing or magazine clipping of a cat, and make their library cards work again without paying fines. The library called the program March Meowness, a way to forgive people who lost or damaged borrowed items by accident. Jason Homer, the executive director of the library, said in an interview on Monday that about 400 people had their library accounts unblocked and could borrow books again after bringing in their pictures or drawings of cats. In one case, a cat-less 7-year-old boy, who lost the book Captain Underpants, had his library card work again after the staff gave him paper and a pencil to draw a cat.
Like many public libraries in the United States, the Worcester Public Library is trying to encourage people to return there after the pandemic. The library had previously tried to raise the number of visitors with canned food drives. The library staff held meetings for several months to come up with different creative ways to get people back through the library doors. After these meetings, the Meowness program took shape. While the library had previously stopped charging fines for late returns, many people who faced fees for lost items simply stayed away. One woman named Julie, who had lost library DVDs by accident, regained access to her account with a photograph of a cat.

It has been three years since Markus Hofmueller took over Bach’s Bakery (面包店) in Changsha, Hunan province. The German baker says it was one of the best decisions he has made. The bakery is well known for hiring bakers with hearing disability and is loved by many locals.
Hofmueller saw the job as a chance to learn more about management, finances, and customer service. He starts work at 7 a.m. and spends most of his day in the office, while the chefs take care of the kitchen. In the beginning, he worked more in the kitchen, but later focused on building strong relationships within the team. He believes that good communication and teamwork are key to success.
“The employees are the heart of the bakery,” he says. “Watching them grow and improve their skills makes me happiest.” He even learns the sign language so he can better communicate with his team. He says that hearing-impaired bakers are especially good at noticing details others might miss, which helps ensure high bread quality.

C
For decades, scientists assumed human memory works like a digital hard drive: information is stored steadily and recalled accurately. Yet recent research published in Scientific American challenges this view, arguing that memory is reconstructive rather than reproductive. Every time we recall a past event, we unintentionally rewrite details, mixing real experiences with imagination, bias or later knowledge.
This phenomenon, called memory reconsolidation, happens at the brain’s cellular level. When a memory is activated, neural connections holding that memory temporarily weaken. If new information enters the mind during this period, it can be woven into the original memory, changing what we believe we remember. The process explains why eyewitness accounts often differ sharply, even among people who saw the same incident.
Critics once believed false memories only appeared under strong suggestion or in vulnerable groups. These groups they thought were subject to outside disturbance. However, controlled experiments show ordinary adults regularly develop minor false memories in daily life. For example, people may misremember where they placed an object or the exact words of a conversation, and convince their version is fully true.
Understanding memory reconstruction carries practical value. Courts rely heavily on witness memory, while therapists must distinguish real trauma (创伤) from constructed memories. Researchers stress that memory imperfection is not a brain defect but an adaptive feature. It allows humans to simplify messy past details and fit old experiences into present-day understanding, though it comes with the cost of occasional inaccuracy.
28.What does the new research find about human memory?
A.It stores information like an electronic device.
B.It changes when people recall past events.
C.It can barely be influenced by later knowledge.
D.It becomes weaker with frequent recall.
29.Why do eyewitnesses give different descriptions of one event?
A.They have different versions of experiences.
B.They are unwilling to tell the whole truth.
C.Their memories are reconstructed differently.
D.Their brains fail to receive real-time signals.
30.What does the word “vulnerable” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A.Easily affected. B.Highly intelligent.
C.Extremely honest. D.Badly treated.
31.What is the main idea of the text?
A.The process of storing human memories. B.How false memories form in participants.
C.Memory is imperfect but adaptive in nature. D.The importance of memory in certain cases.
【答案】28.B 29.C 30.A 31.C
根据第一段中“Yet recent research published in Scientific American challenges this view, arguing that memory is reconstructive rather than reproductive. Every time we recall a past event, we unintentionally rewrite details, mixing real experiences with imagination, bias or later knowledge.(然而,最近发表在《科学美国人》上的一项研究挑战了这一观点,认为记忆是重建的,而不是再生的。每次我们回忆过去的事情时,我们都会无意中重写细节,将真实经历与想象、偏见或后来的知识混合在一起。)”可知,新研究发现人们回忆往事时记忆会发生改变,
29.细节理解题。根据第二段中“When a memory is activated, neural connections holding that memory temporarily weaken. If new information enters the mind during this period, it can be woven into the original memory, changing what we believe we remember. The process explains why eyewitness accounts often differ sharply, even among people who saw the same incident.(当记忆被激活时,承载该记忆的神经连接会暂时弱化。若此时有新信息进入意识,就可能被编织进原始记忆,从而改变我们自以为记住的内容。这一过程解释了为何目击者的证词常存在显著差异——即便他们目睹的是同一事件。)”可知,目击者记忆重构的过程不同,导致描述不同。
30.词句猜测题。根据第三段中“Critics once believed false memories only appeared under strong suggestion or in vulnerable groups. These groups they thought were subject to outside disturbance.(批评者曾认为虚假记忆只会在强烈暗示或针对vulnerable群体时出现,这类人群被认为容易受到外界干扰。)”
通读全文,尤其是根据第四段中“Researchers stress that memory imperfection is not a brain defect but an adaptive feature.(研究人员强调,记忆的不完美并非大脑缺陷,而是一种适应性特征。)” “Memory is imperfect but adaptive in nature.(记忆虽不完美,但本质上是具有适应性的。)”

When acoustic (声音的) ecologist Marcus Maeder first placed a listening device in the soil, he was unprepared for what he heard. All sorts of strange sounds flooded his headphones, revealing a dynamic world hidden beneath the seemingly quiet ground.
Ecologists have long known that soil is home to vast biodiversity. In just a single cup of dirt, researchers have counted up to 100 million life forms, ranging from tiny bacteria to larger insects and earthworms. These underground creatures play a vital role in cycling nutrients and supporting life on Earth.
Now, in a relatively new scientific field, known as soil bioacoustics, a growing number of biologists are collecting underground noises to open a window into this complex and mysterious world. They’ve found that something as simple as a metal nail pushed into the dirt can become a sort of listening post if equipped with the right sensors. The acoustic data helps scientists answer fundamental questions, like how creatures communicate or when plants grow their roots.
Beyond basic research, underground acoustics could also help us take better care of the environment and detect pests (害虫) like root-feeding insects, which cause billions of dollars in damage annually. By identifying the distinctive sounds of these pests, scientists hope to develop more eco-friendly strategies that reduce the need for widespread chemical use.
However, scientists are also recording less welcome sounds: human-made noises, such as construction or traffic, are detectable underground. More concerning is the finding that in intensively farmed areas, the natural sounds of soil life are fading, indicating a worrying decline in biodiversity. To help more people realize what we’re in danger of losing, Maeder has started a citizen science project that lends people in Switzerland acoustic sensors to listen for underground activities themselves. The recordings are being gathered into a national library of soil sounds with the hope of raising awareness. Demand so far is high, Maeder says. “The sensors are always booked.”
32.What is the main focus of soil bioacoustics?
A.Studying underground life. B.Tracking plant growth.
C.Monitoring noise pollution. D.Capturing natural sounds.
33.What is a practical application of soil bioacoustics according to the text?
A.Boosting farm output. B.Enabling targeted pest control.
C.Improving traditional farming. D.Eliminating the need for chemical use.
34.What does the high demand for sensors in Maeder’s project suggest?
A.Public interest in soil ecology. B.Severe decline in soil health.
C.Easy access to monitoring tools. D.Need to increase project funding.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Why Soil Is No Longer Silent? B.Uncovering an Underground World
C.How Human Noise Affects Biodiversity? D.Listening to the Hidden Sounds of Soil
【答案】32.A 33.B 34.A 35.D
根据第三段“Now, in a relatively new scientific field, known as soil bioacoustics, a growing number of biologists are collecting underground noises to open a window into this complex and mysterious world. They’ve found that something as simple as a metal nail pushed into the dirt can become a sort of listening post if equipped with the right sensors. The acoustic data helps scientists answer fundamental questions, like how creatures communicate or when plants grow their roots.(如今,在一个相对较新的科学领域——土壤生物声学中,越来越多的生物学家正在收集地下的声音,以此打开一扇通往这个复杂而神秘世界的窗户。他们发现,只需将一枚简单的金属钉插入泥土中,并配备合适的传感器,它就能成为一个监听点。声学数据帮助科学家回答基本问题,例如生物如何交流,或者植物何时生长根系)”可知,土壤生物声学的主要研究重点是地下生命。
33.细节理解题。根据第四段“Beyond basic research, underground acoustics could also help us take better care of the environment and detect pests (害虫) like root-feeding insects, which cause billions of dollars in damage annually. By identifying the distinctive sounds of these pests, scientists hope to develop more eco-friendly strategies that reduce the need for widespread chemical use.(除了基础研究,地下声学还可以帮助我们更好地保护环境,并检测害虫,如每年造成数十亿美元损失的食根昆虫。通过识别这些害虫的独特声音,科学家希望开发更环保的策略,减少对广泛使用化学品的需求)”可知,土壤生物声学的一个实际应用是实现有针对性的害虫控制。
34.推理判断题。根据最后一段“To help more people realize what we’re in danger of losing, Maeder has started a citizen science project that lends people in Switzerland acoustic sensors to listen for underground activities themselves. The recordings are being gathered into a national library of soil sounds with the hope of raising awareness. Demand so far is high, Maeder says. “The sensors are always booked.” (为了帮助更多人意识到我们面临失去的东西,Maeder启动了一个公民科学项目,向瑞士民众借出声学传感器,让他们自己倾听地下活动。这些录音正在被收集到一个国家土壤声音库中,希望提高人们的意识。Maeder说,到目前为止需求量很高。“传感器总是被预订一空。”)”可推知,传感器的高需求表明公众对土壤生态学的兴趣。
35.主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第一段“When acoustic (声音的) ecologist Marcus Maeder first placed a listening device in the soil, he was unprepared for what he heard. All sorts of strange sounds flooded his headphones, revealing a dynamic world hidden beneath the seemingly quiet ground. (当声学生态学家Marcus Maeder第一次将听音设备放入土壤中时,他对所听到的声音毫无准备。各种奇怪的声音涌入他的耳机,揭示了一个隐藏在看似安静的地面之下的动态世界)”和第三段“Now, in a relatively new scientific field, known as soil bioacoustics, a growing number of biologists are collecting underground noises to open a window into this complex and mysterious world. (如今,在一个相对较新的科学领域——土壤生物声学中,越来越多的生物学家正在收集地下的声音,以此打开一扇通往这个复杂而神秘世界的窗户)”可知,文章主要介绍了科学家通过倾听土壤中的声音来研究地下生物世界。故D项“Listening to the Hidden Sounds of Soil (倾听土壤隐藏的声音)”能概括文章内容,最适合作文章标题。
People favor humor, as it lights up daily moments, eases awkwardness and makes every interaction warm and enjoyable. This magic of humor doesn’t just work in daily life. 36 A little humor can greatly enhance scientists’ communication effect.
Firstly, humor simplifies tough scientific knowledge. 37 . For example, explaining AI in self-driving cars with a funny analogy about “machines learning like clumsy toddlers” makes abstract ideas easy for non-professional groups to understand. 38 Scientists sharing clever and humorous stories about laboratory experiments on social media often attract more interactions than dry academic posts. Additionally, humor humanizes scientists, as seen in popular science lectures where light-hearted jokes help audiences feel closer to researchers.
39 The hidden risks deserve our attention. If the content itself is untrue, humor can even replace facts, leading the audience to form wrong opinions about scientific knowledge just based on the amusing posts they see. Overusing sarcasm or negative humor also has the opposite effect, as it will quickly make scientists lose the public’s trust and damage their credibility.
Proper humor use requires a balance between vivid expression and professional precision. It should neither overshadow the core scientific information nor be so shallow that it loses seriousness. Overuse harms professionalism. 40
A.You need to use humour with great care in such communication.
B.Scientists who master this balance can be more welcoming and popular.
C.It also boosts audience engagement effectively.
D.It helps break the impression of scientists being cold and distant.
E.It also shines in the field of science, especially online.
F.Humor in scientific communication is a double-edged sword, though.
G.It’s a helper in making complex concepts understandable to ordinary people.
上文“This magic of humor doesn’t just work in daily life.(幽默的这种魔力不仅仅在日常生活中发挥作用)”说明幽默的作用范围。下文“A little humor can greatly enhance scientists’ communication effect.(一点幽默能大大增强科学家的沟通效果)”引出幽默在科学领域的应用。
下文“For example, explaining AI in self-driving cars with a funny analogy about “machines learning like clumsy toddlers” makes abstract ideas easy for non-professional groups to understand.(例如,用一个有趣的类比来解释自动驾驶汽车中的人工智能,即“机器像笨拙的蹒跚学步的孩子一样学习”,可以让非专业群体更容易理解抽象的概念)”举例说明幽默帮助普通人理解复杂概念。
38.上文“For example, explaining AI in self-driving cars with a funny analogy about “machines learning like clumsy toddlers” makes abstract ideas easy for non-professional groups to understand.(例如,用一个有趣的类比来解释自动驾驶汽车中的人工智能,即“机器像笨拙的蹒跚学步的孩子一样学习”,可以让非专业群体更容易理解抽象的概念)”说明幽默在简化知识方面的效果。下文“Scientists sharing clever and humorous stories about laboratory experiments on social media often attract more interactions than dry academic posts.(科学家们在社交媒体上分享关于实验室实验的聪明幽默的故事,往往比枯燥的学术帖子吸引更多的互动)”说明幽默能提升观众参与度。
40.上文“Proper humor use requires a balance between vivid expression and professional precision. It should neither overshadow the core scientific information nor be so shallow that it loses seriousness.

A selection of traditional Chinese fan paintings构成主动关系,故用现在分词,作状语。
本空与birds and flowers及people’s daily lives并列,作portraying的宾语,landscape为可数名词,“风景”不止一处,用复数形式。

“Visiting the National Museum of South Korea”和“seeing some artworks on fans by ancient South Korean artists”为并列关系,应用连词and。

It was my birthday that day, and my grandfather gave me a gift — a piggy bank. It had an opening through which one could put money in, but the opening was not big enough to reach in and get the money out. The only way to get the money was to break the piggy bank open. My grandfather explained that was the whole idea. And he added, “The piggy bank would help save your money so that, at the end of the year, you might have enough for that bike you dreamed about.” He asked if I would put some of the money he gave me into the piggy bank. I agreed immediately and promised sincerely, “I wouldn’t break it open until I could afford my dream bike.”
Whenever my grandfather gave me some pocket money, he would say, “This is for spending. But you can save some and put it in the piggy bank if you want to save it up.” When he gave me larger amounts, it was clear for me to save the extra money in the piggy bank. For some time, this worked fine. I loved shaking the piggy bank and hearing the sound of the coins. As it became heavier, I grew more excited, dreaming about buying my new bike, and all the adventures I could have on it.
Whenever I wanted to take some money from the piggy bank to buy delicious ice-creams or beautiful presents, I would imagine riding my bike on the street, and thinking of that, my thoughts about buying those things went away. So for almost three years, I had only put money into the piggy bank without taking any out. I thought I wouldn’t break my piggy bank for anything. But one day something unexpected happened. I saw a piece of news on the television that a serious earthquake had happened in a nearby province. As many houses were destroyed, a lot of children became homeless. Seeing their shabby clothes and crying faces, I was sleepless that night. Staring at my piggy bank, I was thinking about what I could do with it.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
The next morning, I took out my piggy bank and shook it.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Hearing the noise, my grandfather came over.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The next morning, I took out my piggy bank and shook it. “There should be a lot of money in it. This is years of my savings,” I said to myself. I was about to break it and withdraw money when my mind came back to the bike I wanted to buy, and I hesitated. However, thinking of the look in the eyes of the children hoping for help in the earthquake, I grabbed the piggy bank and threw it to the ground. Suddenly, the piggy bank broke into pieces and the coins rolled all over the floor.
Hearing the noise, my grandfather came over. I explained to him what had happened. Having known my thought, he fondly touched my head and said, “Good boy, you did the right thing. Grandpa is proud of you.” He continued, “My dear grandson, you deserve that bicycle. As a bonus, let’s buy that bike together now.” “Thank you, Grandpa,” I was overwhelmed with happiness. From that day on, you would always see me riding my bike on the street, leaving my hearty laughter behind.

Hofmueller took over the bakery in 2022 from its former German owners, who returned home after 11 years. He followed his heart, driven by his love for baking and his interest in helping people with disabilities.
He and his wife have introduced new flavors and opened a WeChat mini-program. The bakery has become a friendly place for locals and foreigners to meet. During Thanksgiving, he even taught American customers some sign language.
Hofmueller hopes to keep training more people and work with local vocational (职业的) schools. “I don’t know what the future holds, but I believe good things will come as I follow my heart,” he says.
24.What do we know about Hofmueller?
A.He had previous experience in managing a bakery.
B.He found it more important to help out in the kitchen.
C.His bakery has become a bridge between cultures.
D.His future plan involves teaching in vocational schools.
25.What does Hofmueller value most about his team?
A.Their skills in customer service. B.Their growth and focus on details.
C.Their careful following of rules. D.Their quick learning and hard work.
26.How does Hofmueller think of the future of the bakery?
A.Confident but cautious. B.Worried but determined.
C.Uncertain but optimistic. D.Ambitious but realistic.
27.What is the text mainly about?
A.How a baker supports disabled workers. B.How a baker integrates business with care.
C.How teamwork improves bakery success. D.How technology changes modern baking.

1.续写词数应为150左右;
