Have you ever heard of futurists? These people’s job is to predict what will happen in the future. Ray Hammond is very famous in Europe for predicting the future. He has been studying, writing and speaking about how future changes will influence society for over 30 years. What does he think our world will be like in 2040?
Health
We will wear different sensors (传感器). They will check our blood pressure, blood sugar and blood oxygen levels all the time.
Thanks to new treatments and medicines, in 2040, many of us will be able to live well beyond 100. People will look young, even if they are already in their nineties.
Traffic
Most cars will be driving themselves. The only place where we could experience being in control of a car would be a special place for racing.
All the cars will run on electricity, so our roads will look and sound very different.
As for air travel, we will not see much change. Electric and self-flying planes are probably still in their experimental stages. There will not be many of them.
However, we might be able to travel in hyperloops (超高速铁路) at speeds of up to 1,100 km/h. A trip from Shanghai to San Francisco would take only nine hours.
Entertainment
In 2040, we will spend most of our time in virtual worlds (虚拟世界), whether at work or after work. Instead of looking at a screen, we will experience this as if it were real. We will hardly leave these virtual worlds to meet people in real life. We may even find this activity to be a little strange!
16. How does the writer begin the text?
A. By listing numbers. B. By asking questions.
C. By telling stories. D. By sharing sayings.
17. What will sensors on our bodies do?
A. Help us drive cars. B. Make us look young.
C. Check our health. D. Prevent accidents.
18. What can we learn about traffic?
A. Cars will be electric.
B. Roads will look the same.
C. Planes will become cleaner.
D. People will travel from Shanghai to San Francisco in three hours.
19. What does Ray Hammond say about people in 2040?
A. Most people will die before 100.
B. People in their nineties will look old.
C. Many people will live over 100 years old and look young.
D. People will not use any sensors on their bodies.
20. What is the text mainly about?
A. Why futurists are important. B. Life now and life in the past.
C. What life will be like in 2040. D. New medicines and technologies.

In 1972, Richard Sears, a young American began learning Chinese because of his interest in traditional Chinese culture. Drawn to the ancient(古老的) language, he went to China to study Chinese later.
In 1994, Richard Sears decided to put the ancient Chinese characters online. Then, in 2002, he did it. When I was very young, people in our village planted fruit trees for a living. My grandmother always took me to the orchard (果园) on the hill. At that time, they had to carry water from the river at the foot of the hill to halfway up the hill. Even though we worked so hard, the production (产量) level of fruit was still low because it was short of water there.
One day, two young men led a group of workers to our village. They learned about the difficulties we faced, and later, canals (水渠) and other projects began to be built in my village. “Who are they?” I asked. “They are good men from our government,” my grandma said.
Shortly after, I moved to another city for my junior high school. I only came back to my hometown once a year to visit my grandmother.
One day, my family and I made time to return. We were surprised because everything had changed. The canals ran past every orchard, so villagers didn’t have to go up and down the hill anymore. The river was now so clean that fish swam happily in it. When we arrived home, my grandma took out some fresh pears and apples. She told us that after the water conservation project (水利工程) was finished, a policy was made to encourage more people to increase the fruit production with clean water in the river.
Thank those good men who have devoted themselves to the development of our countryside. Nowadays, people work hard to live in a big city. However, we should not forget our hometowns where we are from.

Great Changes in My Eyes
During the past two years, great changes have taken place around me. Let me tell you about them.
My deskmate used to like singing and dancing, but now she likes reading and taking part in cultural activities because she wants to gain more knowledge and learn about Chinese culture. I used to be crazy about computer games, but now I like running and playing football. They help me relax, stay fit, and make friends. Our school was dirty before, but now it is clean with many trees and flowers. It is beautiful and we are happy to study here.
These changes make our lives better and more meaningful.
