Mary began to like her life here. Every morning, she went outside after breakfast and spent most of the day in the grounds. The cold wind brought pink to her face. And she finished all of her food each evening. She was much healthier. After dinner, she liked sitting near the fire and talking to Martha.
“Why does Mr. Craven hate the locked garden?” Mary asked once.
“It was Mrs. Craven’s garden and she loved it. She looked after the flowers together with Mr. Craven. No gardeners were allowed in.”
“But what happened?” Mary asked.
“There was an old tree in the garden with a branch (树枝) like a seat, Mrs. Craven often sat there, reading and talking. One day, the branch broke and she fell down. She was badly hurt and died soon. Mr. Craven locked the garden and never talked about it.”
Mary seldom felt sorry for anyone, but now she understood how sad her uncle must be.
The wind blew hard. Mary listened, and through the noise she thought that she heard a child crying.
“Can you hear someone crying?” she asked Martha.
Martha seemed a little nervous. “No,” she answered. “It’s only the wind or the servant who works in the kitchen. She’s got a toothache. Perhaps she’s crying. I’m going to check if she needs any help.” After the words, Martha left the room quickly. Then Mary looked around the house. Suddenly she heard again the sound of a child crying. She stopped to listen at a door, but then another door opened and Mrs. Medlock came out, “What are you doing here?” she said, and she took Mary by the arm and pulled her away. “Get back to your room at once.”

①We know that with thousands of years of developing, people are becoming better at languages. But at the same time, language can also affect (影响) us in different aspects (方面).
②First, many studies on bilingual (双语) people show that when people change between two languages, they must think more actively than just using one, especially in the prefrontal cortex. This part at the very front of our brain is important for handling (处理) information. And bilinguals learn new languages faster. Bilingualism might make the brain stronger. One researcher found that lifelong bilinguals often get brain illnesses later than those who know only one language. Another study shows that bilinguals get well sooner.
③Language can also affect how we see the world. Studies show that English speakers think of time from back to front. But Chinese speakers think of time in the opposite way. A study found that Greek speakers could find out different colours of blue faster and better than English speakers. People who speak languages like Spanish and French may connect words with men or women traits (性状).
④What’s more, language might shape (塑造) our personality (个性). Bilinguals sometimes describe the same picture differently depending on the language they use. Studies also show that bilingual children are better at understanding others’ ideas.
⑤In short, language seems to have a bigger effect on us. The more languages we learn, the cleverer we might be. There’s still a lot to learn.
18.What do we learn about “the prefrontal cortex”?
A.It makes our brain stronger. B.It’s a front part of our brain.
C.It is not good for our health. D.It brings illnesses to people.
19.Which is TRUE according to the passage?
A.The way Spanish people think of time is different from others.
B.The Greeks feel different blues faster and better than Englishmen.
C.Both English and Chinese people think of time from back to front.
D.Frenchmen and Japanese people connect words with men and women traits.
20.Which of the following is the structure (结构) of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
21.What’s the purpose of the passage?
A.To tell how to learn languages. B.To introduce the prefrontal cortex.
C.To show how language developed. D.To make people learn languages.
根据第二段中“This part at the very front of our brain is important for handling (处理) information.”
根据第三段中“A study found that Greek speakers could find out different colours of blue faster and better than English speakers.”
最后一段提到“The more languages we learn, the cleverer we might be. There’s still a lot to learn.”(我们学的语言越多,我们可能就越聪明。

①From friendship to study stress (压力), more Chinese people are now using AI tools like DeepSeek to talk about their problems. Let’s take a look at the example.
A worried teenager: I’m really hard on myself when I make mistakes. Can you help me?
DeepSeek: I hear you. It’s normal to feel unhappy when you make a mistake. But remember, mistakes are chances to learn and grow. So, try thinking: I’m still learning and it’s OK to make mistakes along the way.
②People nowadays share feelings with the chatbot (聊天程序) and get warm advice. This is called “AI therapy” (AI治疗), which is becoming popular online. But can robots really take the place of human therapists (治疗师)?
③In 2024, 45 percent of people who needed mental (精神的) health care around the world did not get it, according to Huntington Psychological Services. That’s because it was too expensive or there weren’t enough doctors. Daniel Lowd, an expert (专家) on mental health at the University of Oregon, believes AI could help solve the problems. “People can find some support and ideas by talking to the chatbot, and that’s wonderful,” Lowd told Newsweek.
④However, human therapists can understand feelings deeply through face-to-face talks and create personalized treatment (治疗) plans. It’s hard for robots to fully copy. Another problem is safety. Without right training or rules, AI therapy can’t be as responsible as human therapists and might cause harm to people’s mental health.
⑤Experts believe the key to safe AI therapy is strict government control. I totally agree that without strict government control, AI therapy could be dangerous. As AI becomes part of daily life, finding a balance between its benefits and risks is important. While AI can offer quick help, human connection is still necessary for serious emotional (情感的) needs.
22.Which of the following is an example of AI therapy?
A.Making friends online. B.Getting warm suggestions from AI.
C.Sharing news with online friends. D.Learning English on DeepSeek.
23.What does the underlined phrase “the problems” in Para.3 refer to?
a. The problems with friends. b. The great need for doctors.
c. The stress from work or study. d. The high price of seeing a doctor.
A.ab B.ac C.bd D.cd
24.What is Para.4 mainly about?
A.The history of AI therapy. B.The popularity of AI therapy.
C.The problems of AI therapy. D.The development of AI therapy.
25.What does the writer probably think of AI therapy?
A.It’s much better than human connection. B.It will take the place of human therapists.
C.It cannot offer quick help. D.It’s helpful under strict government control.
第二段指出AI治疗的定义:“People nowadays share feelings with the chatbot and get warm advice. This is called ‘AI therapy’”,这直接说明从AI那里获得暖心建议属于AI治疗的例子。
23.第三段说明问题:“In 2024, 45 percent of people who needed mental health care around the world did not get it. That’s because it was too expensive or there weren’t enough doctors.”,“the problems”指代看病费用高以及医生短缺。
24.第四段介绍AI治疗的不足:“It’s hard for robots to fully copy. Another problem is safety.”,说明本段主要讲AI治疗存在的问题。
25.第五段表明作者观点:“Experts believe the key to safe AI therapy is strict government control. I totally agree that without strict government control, AI therapy could be dangerous.”,说明作者认为在政府严格监管下AI治疗是有帮助的。

Like sunshine in our lives, 44 (friend) brings 45 (happy) and warmth to everyone, especially teenagers. 46 friends, people may feel 47 (lone) and unhappy. Let’s find out why friendship is so important.
