My classmates stood along the track and shouted my name ___16___ the way to the finish line. When the whistle blew, I ran as fast as I could, and half way round the track my legs began to burn. For a moment I wanted to stop, but then I heard my teacher say, 'Don't give up!' I held my breath for a moment and kept running. A A Friend in Need
When I was in Grade 7, I was not good at maths. I often fell behind in class and felt hopeless. Then a new boy came to our class. His name was Peter. He was quiet, but his maths was always the best in our class. One day after school, he noticed me looking at my test paper with a worried face. He did not say anything clever. He just sat down next to me, took out a piece of paper and showed me how to think about the last two questions step by step. “It is not that you are not clever,” he said quietly. “You just need another way to think about it.” I got eighty-eight marks that term, the highest mark I had ever got. From then on, we did our homework together at lunchtime. He never talked about his own scores, and he was always the first to say “let’s try again”. I still remember his words, because a good friend is not the one who tells you how clever he is, but the one who helps you find out what you can do.
25. What was the writer’s problem in Grade 7?
A. He was not good at maths. B. He was often late for class.
C. He did not have any friends.
26. How did Peter help the writer that afternoon?
A. He told the teacher about the problem.
B. He showed the writer how to think about the questions step by step.
C. He gave the writer his own test paper.
27. What does the writer learn from Peter?
A. Maths is easy for everyone. B. Scores are not important at all.
C. A good friend helps you find out what you can do.
B School Life Around the World
School life is different around the world, but students everywhere have the same dreams. In China, most students go to school from Monday to Friday and have a two-day weekend. In the UK, children start school at about nine o’clock and finish at half past three, and they often have a “tea break” in the middle of the morning. In the United States, the school day is long, and many students take a bus to school. The subjects are not always the same either. In China, most students study Chinese, maths and English, while in the UK they have a special subject called “design and technology”, where they learn to make useful things by hand. In Japan, students clean their own classrooms every day, and they often take part in school clubs after class. Our school in Nanjing has more than forty clubs, from the drama club to the music club. Every school day is different, and every country has something new to show us.
28. When do children in the UK usually finish school?
A. At nine o’clock. B. At half past three. C. At five o’clock.
29. What is “design and technology” about in the UK?
A. Learning to make useful things by hand. B. Learning to clean the classroom.
C. Learning to take a bus to school.
30. What does the writer want to tell us about school life?
A. It is exactly the same everywhere. B. It is boring in China.
C. It is different around the world, and each country has something new to show.
C Three Problems, Three Pieces of Advice
Learning English is not always easy, even when students expect it to be. Here are three problems that learners often meet, and the advice our teachers give. The first problem is that new words soon disappear from our memory. The reason is simple: we meet the words, but we never use them. The advice is to use each new word on the same day, in a sentence of your own, and to meet it again the next day. The second problem is that we understand the teacher in class but forget everything after the bell rings. The advice here is to take notes in our own words instead of copying the teacher’s words word for word. The third problem is that we often spell a new word in the wrong way. The advice is to check the spelling in a dictionary and to write the word down twice in your own notebook. None of these problems means that you cannot learn English well. They only show that you have not found your own way yet.
31. Why do new words soon disappear from learners’ memory?
A. Because they are too difficult to understand.
B. Because learners meet them but never use them.
C. Because teachers do not explain them clearly.
32. What does the writer advise students to do in class?
A. To copy the teacher’s words word for word. B. To stay quiet and only listen.
C. To take notes in their own words.
33. Which is the third problem in the passage?
A. Learners are too shy to speak English. B. Learners spell new words in the wrong way. C. The teacher’s English is too fast to catch up with.
D The Birdhouse I Made
Last summer my grandpa and I made a birdhouse for our garden. It was the first thing I had ever made with my own hands. We cut the wood with a small saw, and I was so excited that I cut my finger on the very first afternoon. “A hand-made thing does not have to be perfect,” grandpa said. “What matters is that you finish it.” We painted the little house green, and I made a small door for it with a piece of wood. Every morning I put food on the ground under the tree, and in spring two small birds moved in. My friends say it is the ugliest birdhouse in the neighbourhood, and it is true — one side is a little higher than the other. But I know why it looks like that, because my own hands made it. Now my little cousin wants one too, and I am teaching him how to use a saw. I am happy when I see him working with his own hands, just as I did.
34. What did the writer and his grandpa make?
A. A small wooden box. B. A birdhouse.
C. A model plane.
35. What happened on the first afternoon?
A. The saw was broken. B. The writer cut his finger.
C. They ran out of wood.
36. What does grandpa think is the most important?
A. That you finish it even if it is not perfect. B. Making a perfect thing.
C. Painting it green.
37. Why is the birdhouse special to the writer?
A. Because two birds live in it. B. Because he made it with his own hands.
C. Because his friends like it.

The teacher gave her an old T-shirt, a needle, some thread and a pair of scissors, and asked her to sew a small cloth bag for her pencil box. Emma had never used a needle before. Her hands shook, and she sewed the wrong side of the cloth twice. “Don't worry,” the teacher said. “Nobody makes a good one at the beginning.” At last she finished a bag that was not quite square, but it was really hers. “It looks like you,” her classmate Tom said with a smile, “and I like it.” That evening, Emma also did something she had never done before. In the school craft show, she stood up and showed her cloth bag to the other students, using six new words she had learnt that week. Her voice shook, but she did not stop. When she sat down, three classmates clapped. “You did it!” Tom said. “A clumsy first try is better than no try at all, and now you know that you can do it.”

31. Why do new words soon disappear from learners’ memory?(Because they are too difficult to understand. / Because learners meet them but never use them. / Because teachers do not explain them clearly.)
【答案】B
【解析】关键句“we meet the words, but we never use them.”

【解析】第三点“we often spell a new word in the wrong way.”说明第三个问题是单词拼写错误。

My best friend is Millie. She is thirteen years old, with short black hair and a big smile. She is kind and brave, and she never laughs at the mistakes I make in my homework.
I like History best, because our teacher often shows us old photos and lets us tell stories about the past. I am also in our photography club, and we go out with our cameras on Saturday afternoons.
To learn English well, I keep a small notebook for new words and review them with my partner every evening. I also write down my mistakes, because a mistake is a message.
Last winter my mother and I made a small bridge model with some old card, a tube of glue and a roll of tape. My first attempt fell apart in my hands, so we made a second one together. Now it stands on my desk, and every time I look at it I remember that finishing is harder than starting.
I hope you can visit my school one day. Please write to me soon.
Yours,
Li Hua
