You can choose happiness no matter what circumstances (环境,情况,条件) you are in. You can choose to be happy no matter what challenges life brings you. Let the following simple strategies (策略) guide you back to your natural happy state (状态).
Make lemonade when life gives you lemons.
Besides happiness, trouble will also be part of life. It’s how you choose to react to your situations that make the difference. If you look at something hard enough, you’ll see the positive side of it.
Do what you love doing.
Do you have a lifelong dream or desire? If so, start working towards it. Taking baby steps towards a goal will help you feel like you’re accomplishing something. You’ll find drive and determination to reach that goal when it’s something you love doing.
Use one of your talents.
One reason why so many people are unhappy is that they’re not doing what they’re called to do with their God-given talents. Each of us has a purpose in life. You have natural talents to help you achieve your purpose, so use your talents effectively.
Call a friend who you know is positive and cheerful.
Talk about your feelings and listen to their advice. Usually, people allow themselves to go deeper and deeper into self-depression. The truth is that you don’t have to be sad. You can decide to be happy. You just have to make up your mind to do so.
Gratitude (感激,感谢) is the quickest cure for sadness.
When you focus on what’s wrong with your life, you forget to look at what’s right and good. Take a step back and reflect on your life. Do you have children or family to be thankful for? Yes, they may not be the person we’d like them to be, but imagine life without them. Now, be thankful that you have them in your life.
Let your feelings out on paper.
Often you’ll find that just getting your feelings down on paper will allow you to work through them, helping you feel better about yourself and your beautiful life!

Although I was the class clown at school, there’s an introverted (内向的) side to my personality. That’s because I have a neurological (神经系统的) condition that makes it hard for my brain to process visual information. Words swim on the page for me. I wanted to learn how to read but I couldn’t.
In primary school, I didn’t talk to any teachers or family about this. I was clever at hiding it. When I had to write anything down, I guessed, forming what I hoped was the right words. I became good at learning by heart.
When I started secondary school, a student in class made me stand on a chair and read. It was so humiliating that I developed a bad stutter (口吃). I continued to fall through the net, emotionally and educationally. The only thing I loved was practical biology. I wanted to be a doctor.
Then I left school and joined the military. I was determined to be a medic and trained hard. But things unraveled (揭开) when I did a course in pre-hospital emergency care. I passed all my practical exams, preparing for them by watching others. The problem was the written exam. I was so embarrassed but had to tell the examining doctor that I couldn’t read. He urged me to get back into education. I was 34.
I applied to do a medical degree at the Open University (OU). It was back to basics on the course. I knew the alphabet and some words, but my vocabulary was small. I paid for a tutor, who worked with me every week, teaching me to understand words through pictures.
It took me nine years to get that degree. Now, aged 47, I’m an ambassador for the OU, winning an award for embracing education so late in life. I now teach pre-hospital emergency care to medical school students. I also teach children and adults with learning difficulties because I want to give others the chances I had.
I still struggle to read a menu if I’m not wearing my special glasses, but luckily there’s always someone around to lend me a hand. I look back and wonder how many other people have struggled with education and where they are now. I’m proof that no one should be discounted (忽视), ever.

In an air-conditioned office, you may see men sporting shorts while their female co-workers wear jackets to keep warm. Why do women feel cold more easily than men?
The accepted answer is that men and women feel temperature differently. Our bodies produce heat through metabolism One of the key factors of the metabolic rate is our muscles. Generally speaking, men have more muscles than women, leading to a higher metabolic rate. It means that more heat is created. As a result, men, on average, do not feel cold as easily as women. Yes, women and men have physical differences. But why is it women, in most cases, who feel more uncomfortable in a room set to a “comfortable” temperature? The answer lies in the data bias (数据偏见) behind the model of temperature setting in buildings.
In a 2020 article in the journal Nature, Boris Kingma, a human thermal (热量的) performance researcher in the Netherlands, pointed out that most office buildings set the temperature in light of a model based on men’s metabolic rate. Female data were not considered when setting the model. In other words, temperatures for comfort in office buildings are mainly comfortable for men, not women. In his article, Kingma called for the end of this so-called “bias in thermal comfort”.
This is just one example of data bias. In her book, Caroline Perez gave more examples in which women were ignored in data collecting for scientific and technological research and design. Women are more likely to die from a serious car accident because a car’s safety equipment is designed for the typical body of a man. The medicine aspirin (阿司匹林) shows better performance in men since it was developed on data collected mostly from males. Women, who form half of the world’s population, seem to be ignored in these cases.
46. Why don’t men feel cold as easily as women, according to the text?
A. Men have more fat to defeat cold. B. Men exercise more to produce heat.
C. Men have a higher metabolic rate. D. Men burn off less energy when moving.
47. What is the main cause of women feeling uncomfortable in office buildings’ temperature settings?
A. Physical differences between men and women.
B. The data bias in thermal comfort models.
C. Variations in clothing choices.
D. Differences in heat tolerance.
48. What does Kingma think of the data bias behind the model of temperature setting?
A. Unfair. B. Worrying. C. Acceptable. D. Reasonable.
49. Which is NOT an example of women being ignored for scientific and technological research and design?
A. Safety equipment in cars. B. Temperature model setting.
C. Differences in clothing choices. D. Performance of medicine aspirin.
50. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. Arguments about data bias. B. More examples of data bias.
C. Commentary on data bias. D. Reasons for human’s data bias.
C 47. B 48. A 49. C 50. B

根据第二段中“Generally speaking, men have more muscles than women, leading to a higher metabolic rate. It means that more heat is created. As a result, men, on average, do not feel cold as easily as women.”(一般来说,男性比女性有更多的肌肉,导致更高的新陈代谢率。
根据第二段中“But why is it women, in most cases, who feel more uncomfortable in a room set to a “comfortable” temperature? The answer lies in the data bias (数据偏见) behind the model of temperature setting in buildings.”(但为什么在大多数情况下,女性在设置为“舒适”温度的房间里会感到更不舒服呢?
根据第三段中“Female data were not considered when setting the model. In other words, temperatures for comfort in office buildings are mainly comfortable for men, not women. In his article, Kingma called for the end of this so-called “bias in thermal comfort”.”(在建立模型时没有考虑女性数据。 故选A项。
根据最后一段中“This is just one example of data bias. In her book, Caroline Perez gave more examples in which women were ignored in data collecting for scientific and technological research and design. Women are more likely to die from a serious car accident because a car’s safety equipment is designed for the typical body of a man. The medicine aspirin (阿司匹林) shows better performance in men since it was developed on data collected mostly from males.”(这只是数据偏差的一个例子。
根据最后一段“This is just one example of data bias. In her book, Caroline Perez gave more examples in which women were ignored in data collecting for scientific and technological research and design. Women are more likely to die from a serious car accident because a car’s safety equipment is designed for the typical body of a man. Women, who form half of the world’s population, seem to be ignored in these cases.”(这只是数据偏差的一个例子。
I used to be a selfish girl and I only thought of myself. I did not care about helping others, but only about my look, clothes, money and grades.
One day, I was suddenly influenced by my neighbor, who is now in college, and ended up wanting to volunteer for others. He had so much fun with volunteering and told me that he felt extremely good after helping others. I hoped to get the same results, for I felt worthless everywhere then. I viewed almost everything in a negative way, and I figured I had to experience something that would make me appreciate things that I had.
I volunteered at the nursing home for a year where my neighbor volunteered. I brought snacks, coffee and games for the elderly patients, talked to them while sharing snacks, and played games like chess and checkers them. Because they were Koreans, they often had trouble communicating with the helpers who were hired to help them. I sometimes translated things for them and offered to be their translator whenever they needed help.
By volunteering at the nursing home, I changed a lot. I realized how lucky I am to speak both Korean and English and that I should help other people learn Korean as well. I had learned many life lessons through volunteering. By helping others, I felt needed in society. Not only did it enhance my confidence, but it also allowed others to benefit from it.
Volunteering is a great opportunity to improve oneself, others, and the whole society. So if you ever have the chance, volunteer! It’s something you won't regret!
51. What kind of person was the author before volunteering? (no more than 5 words)
______________________________________________________________________
52. Who influenced the author to volunteer? (no more than 3 words)
______________________________________________________________________
53. What did the author do when the elderly patients had difficulty in communicating with the workers? (no more than 10 words)
______________________________________________________________________
54. What does the underlined word mean in paragraph 4? (one word).
______________________________________________________________________
55. What do you think of volunteering after reading the text? Please explain. (no more than 25 words)
______________________________________________________________________
51. A selfish girl.
52. Her neighbor.
53. She translated things for them.
54. Improve.
55. It is meaningful because it helps others and improves ourselves.
根据第一段中“I used to be a selfish girl and I only thought of myself.(我曾经是一个自私的女孩,只考虑自己)”可知,做志愿之前作者是一个自私的女孩。
根据第二段中“One day, I was suddenly influenced by my neighbor, who is now in college, and ended up wanting to volunteer for others.(有一天,我突然受到邻居的影响,他现在在上大学,我最后想要为他人做志愿工作)”可知,是作者的邻居影响她去做志愿。
根据第三段中“Because they were Koreans, they often had trouble communicating with the helpers who were hired to help them. I sometimes translated things for them and offered to be their translator whenever they needed help.(因为他们是韩国人,常常很难和受雇的看护人员沟通。我有时为他们翻译,并且愿意在他们需要时当翻译)”可知,老人和工作人员沟通有困难时,作者为他们翻译。
【54题详解】
考查词义猜测。根据第四段中“By helping others, I felt needed in society. Not only did it enhance my confidence, but it also allowed others to benefit from it.(通过帮助别人,我感受到自己被社会需要。它不仅增强我的自信,也让别人从中受益)”以及最后一段“Volunteering is a great opportunity to improve oneself, others, and the whole society.(志愿活动是提升自己、他人和整个社会的好机会)”可知,志愿活动可以提升自我,结合语境,志愿活动能够提升自信心,由此猜测enhance的含义为“提升、改善”。
【55题详解】
考查推理判断。根据最后一段中“Volunteering is a great opportunity to improve oneself, others, and the whole society.(志愿活动是提升自己、他人和整个社会的好机会)”以及第四段作者的收获可知,志愿活动很有意义,既能帮助他人也能提升自我。
