1. Ss can learn and understand new vocabulary and expressions in the context: celebrate, mark, meaningful, enjoy, later, height, village, next time, blow out, make a wish.

2. Ss can use reading strategies such as predicting, skimming, and scanning to predict content and summarize the main idea.

3. Ss can understand the language features of online forum posts and learn to communicate safely online.

Teaching Procedures:

 

Step 1. Lead - in

1). Brainstorming: Ss quickly say words related to "birthday activities" to review Section A.

2). Learn new vocabulary and expressions related to birthday activities.

3). Ss check the activities they do on their birthdays according to their actual situation and give a simple oral introduction using complete sentences.

 

Step 2. Pre - reading

1). Review the forum posts from Unit 1. Guide Ss to observe the layout, logos, and headers to identify the text type (online forum posts) and explain their reasons.

2). Guide Ss to further observe and identify the identity information of the two posters based on clues outside the text, and state their reasons. Review the cultural differences between Chinese and Western names.

 

Step 3. While - reading

1). 1st reading (Skimming): Ss read the text quickly and choose the correct main idea. Guide them to focus on Wh- keywords and find topic sentences.

2). 2nd reading (Scanning): Ss read the text carefully and complete a table about the two posters' birthday dates and activities.

3). 3rd reading (Detailed): Ss read the first post carefully and answer questions about Xiaoming's birthday. Discuss why "tree" is mentioned twice in the text and make reasonable inferences.

4). 4th reading (Detailed): Ss read the second post carefully and answer questions about Judy's purpose for posting and her birthday information. Note the interactive nature of online posts.
