Unit 7 Happy Birthday!

Section B 1a-2b

一、Teaching Aims

1. Students can learn and use the words and phrases about birthday activities, such as eat birthday noodles, open birthday gifts, make a wish, take photos, have a birthday cake and hear the "Happy Birthday" song.

2. Students can read two online posts, get the main idea (1b), and complete the table with each person's birthday and activities (1c-1d).

3. Students can use the mind map in 2a to organize their own birthday information, and write a short reply to one of the posts (2b).

4. Students can learn to make their birthday meaningful and enjoy sharing their ideas with classmates.

二、Key and Difficult Points

1. Key points: the birthday activities and the key sentences "My birthday is on ...", "I usually ... to celebrate it.", "I do this because ..."; reading for the main idea and for details (1b-1d).

2. Difficult points: telling the dates in English (13th June, 28th July); using because to give a clear reason; writing a short and complete reply (2b).

三、Teaching Tools

1. The textbook, the blackboard and colored pens.

2. Word cards for the birthday activities, and two printed copies of the posts in 1b.

3. A printed table for 1c, a mind map sheet for 2a, and a sample reply for 2b.

4. A recorder or computer for the listening/reading (optional).

四、Teaching Procedures

step1: Lead-in (5 mins)

1. The teacher asks: "When is your birthday? How do you celebrate your birthday?" and writes the title of the unit on the blackboard.

2. Students tick the activities they do on their birthday in 1a (eat birthday noodles, open birthday gifts, make a wish, take photos, have a birthday cake, hear the "Happy Birthday" song).

[Purpose] To activate the topic words about birthdays and get students ready to read.

step2: Reading for the main idea (1b, 8 mins)

1. The teacher tells students the two texts are posts from an online forum called "Birthday Celebrations", and asks them to read quickly.

2. Students choose the main idea of the posts (A. How to celebrate birthdays / B. Who to celebrate birthdays with / C. Where to celebrate birthdays). The answer is A.

[Purpose] To train students to read quickly for the main idea before reading for details.

step3: Reading for details (1c-1d, 12 mins)

1. Students read the two posts again and complete the table in 1c: Yu Xiaoming — 13th June — eat birthday noodles with eggs, take photos under the big tree, plant a tree for his 14th birthday; Judy Clark — 28th July — have a party with friends, a chocolate cake from her mother, sing the song, make a wish, blow out the candles, open gifts, and her father marks her height on the door.
