Objectives:

Language Ability:

1. Ss can use reading strategies such as skimming and scanning to understand the content of birthday cards, summarize the main ideas, and analyze the content and structure of the cards.

2. Ss can perceive and summarize the language and structure of birthday cards, and use the target language to design a decent and beautiful birthday card based on different recipients.

3. Ss can independently explore and generate the writing structure of cards through a step-by-step scaffold.

4. Ss can use peer evaluation and self-evaluation methods to objectively evaluate and give feedback on their own and their partners' learning.

Teaching Procedures:

 

Step 1. Lead - in

1). Let Ss observe the theme pictures and guess the related questions based on the pictures.

2). Guide Ss to think and discuss: Who do people usually write birthday cards to? What is usually included in a birthday card?

3). Find out what students already know and what they want to know to

set the stage for the reading.

 

Step 2. While - reading (Card 1: Teacher-led Analysis)

1). Fast reading: Ask Ss to quickly skim the first card and find out: Who is the writer and who is the recipient?

2). 1st careful reading: Guide Ss to read the text carefully and learn new vocabulary through the context.

3). 2nd careful reading: Ask Ss to answer questions about the deep meaning, specific expressions, and the writing purpose of the card.

4). Guide Ss to infer the images of the "father" and "son" based on the text and summarize them simply.

5). 3rd careful reading: Ask Ss to discuss with partners to figure out the content elements included in this birthday card.

 

Step 3. While - reading (Cards 2 & 3: Autonomous Learning)

1). Ss read the second card independently and answer questions: What is the relationship between the writer and recipient? What are the recipient's personality traits? What is the underlying meaning of specific expressions?

2). Ss read the second card again and independently summarize its writing structure.

3). Ss read the third card independently and answer related questions.
