Unit 7 Happy Birthday!

Section A Pronunciation-2e

I. Teaching Aims

1. Students can hear and read the eight vowel sounds in Pronunciation 1 correctly, e.g. /aʊ/ in how/house/who, /eɪ/ in right/road/price, /ɒ/ in lot/help/will, and tell the similar sounds apart.

2. Students can notice the rising and falling intonation in the short dialogue and read the sentences with the right tune.

3. Students can listen to the two parts of the conversation about a birthday party and fill in the blanks in 2a, then complete the Thing–Price–Number table in 2b.

4. Students can use the shopping sentences "Can I help you?" "How much is / are ...?" and "What do you always get on your birthday?" to talk about buying things for a birthday party.

II. Key and Difficult Points

Key points: the eight vowel sounds in Pronunciation 1; the intonation in the dialogue; the shopping words (cake, oranges, yogurt, candles) and prices; the key sentences Can I help you? / How much is ...? / How much are ...?

Difficult points: telling the similar vowel sounds apart (e.g. /ɒ/ vs /əʊ/, /ɪ/ vs /iː/); using the right intonation without adding extra sounds; choosing is or are correctly with How much when asking about the price.

III. Teaching Tools

Textbook, recording / audio player, sound and word cards (how, right, lot, May, ninth, thing, week, yes ...), realia or pictures of birthday things (cake, candles, oranges, yogurt), the 2a-2b worksheet and the Shopping List sheet, blackboard and coloured pens, dictionary, computer and PowerPoint (optional).

IV. Teaching Procedures

Step 1: Warm-up and Lead-in (5 mins)

1. Teacher asks a few students "When is your birthday?" and "What do you get on your birthday?" to bring back the birthday topic.

2. Teacher shows pictures of a birthday party and a shop, and says today we will listen to people buying things for a birthday party.

[Purpose] To review the birthday topic from 1a-1d and to get the students ready for the shopping talk.

Step 2: Pronunciation 1 – Vowel Sounds (10 mins)

1. Teacher plays the recording of Pronunciation 1 and students listen and repeat the eight columns of words.

2. Teacher reads the words slowly in pairs and asks students to put a hand on their throat to feel the difference between the short and long sounds.

3. Students read the columns by themselves and the teacher corrects the sounds that are easy to mix up (e.g. will / wall, win / when).

[Purpose] To let students hear and say the eight vowel sounds clearly and tell the similar ones apart.
