2. The teacher displays one student’s homework on the screen and asks the class to read it together. Example: Lin Hai’s favourite subject is biology because he thinks it’s interesting to learn about nature, and his biology teacher Ms Yang is really nice. He also likes PE and IT. But he doesn’t like maths because it’s hard.

3. The teacher presents a second version with because, and and but removed, and asks students to compare the two versions. Example: Lin Hai’s favourite subject is biology. He thinks it’s interesting to learn about nature. His biology teacher Ms Yang is really nice. He also likes PE. He likes IT, too. He doesn’t like maths. He thinks it’s hard.
4. Students read both versions and discuss which one is better and why.
5. Students summarize the functions of the three conjunctions with the teacher’s guidance: because gives a reason; and gives another idea; but shows how two ideas are different.
6. Purpose: To review previous knowledge, introduce the target grammar naturally, and help students feel the meaning of the conjunctions through comparison.
Step 2: Presentation (12 minutes)
1. The teacher creates a context and asks students to observe and read the sentences in activity 3a.
2. Students read the sentences and notice how and, but and because are used in each sentence.
3. The teacher guides students to summarize the grammatical rules. Rule 1: and and but can connect parallel sentence elements or two sentences. When they connect two sentences, a comma is usually put before them.
