Five years ago, a truly unforgettable event took place. My wife and I were celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary (纪念日) that year. To our delight, it was a splendid event, lovingly hosted by our sons just for us. Our dear, old friends gave us a wonderful surprise with their thoughtful gifts and heartfelt congratulations. Our gift to each other was a driving trip in the west. We drove from Ontario into Alberta, then southward into Glacier National Park in Montana, and continued to Yellowstone National Park.
It was a cold spring day, and the Beartooth Highway had opened for the season just days before. Alongside the road, there was still a great amount of snow there. The scenery was so impressive that we made lots of stops to record memories with my camera. At the highest point of the highway, I stopped at a lookout to catch the amazing views, with my wife in the centre of my camera lens.
There were not many cars on the road. Sometimes, cars with energetic young tourists passed by. And then we heard a motorcycle in the distance. The driver of the motorcycle, who wore dirty clothes, parked behind our cars. Approaching us, he spoke only a simple command, “Give me your camera and go over there with your wife.” I must admit I felt nervous that we might be robbed where we just created some beautiful memories. Surprisingly, he just took a picture of us, handed back my camera and rode off before we could offer our thanks. Unexpectedly, the photo he took is now one of the most valuable and prized photos of our trip.
In that unexpected encounter, I absorbed a lesson in the most unlikely of places. We should never judge a man by his appearance. To the motorcyclist who may one day read this story and remember us: we wish to extend our deepest appreciation and a heartfelt “Thank you” for the kindness you showed us that day.
4. What do we know about the trip?

A. The motorcycle driver could be dangerous.
B. He thought he broke some rules.
C. His wife didn’t want a stranger to take photos for her.
D. The motorcycle driver might not be good at taking pictures.
7. Which of the following best describes the driver of the motorcycle?

Do you speak a dialect(方言) in daily life? While many Chinese people speak Mandarin(普通话), some local dialects are in danger of disappearing. To save them, the Chinese government started the Chinese Language Resources Protection Project a few years ago.
This project looks at how people talk in 1,712 places. Their languages include 103 dialects that are almost gone. It has helped China to build the largest language resource library in the world. There’s an online library where people can learn dialects from over 5.6 million audio clips(音频) and over 5 million videos.
Why is it important to protect the dialect culture? According to British linguist Harold Palmer, dialects are a key to store local cultures. Language faithfully shows the history, the beliefs and the biases(偏见) of an area, he said.
Scholar Zhang Hong ming talked about his concerns of the disappearing of dialects, “For about over 10 years, in the Wu dialect areas such as Shanghai and Suzhou, children aged 6 to 15 can understand but hardly speak the dialect. Meanwhile, young people above 15 years old sometimes speak it, but not very well. If this keeps happening, the dialect might disappear,” he said.
So how did China make this big library? “A big national effort has been put into the project to make it happen,” said Cao Zhiyun, chief expert on the project. Over five years, more than 350 universities and research groups joined in, along with over 4,500 experts and more than 6,000
dialect speakers.
The project is now entering into its second part. This includes creating digital tools like apps and mobile dictionaries to help people lean dialects.
8. How does the author start the text?
A. By quoting sayings. B. By sharing a story.
C. By stating his own experiences. D. By asking a question.
9. What’s the third paragraph mainly about?
A. The importance of dialects. B. The reason to protect dialects.
C. How to protect dialects. D. The disappearing of dialects.
10. What’s Zhang Hongming’s attitude to Wu dialect?
A. Worried. B. Positive. C. Indifferent. D. Unclear.
11. What can we know about the project according to the text?
A. Chinese government has been made great efforts to it.
B. There are 4500 experts who come from more than 350 universities are working on it.
C. It has just begun.
D. Harold Palme is the chief expert on the project.
【答案】8. D 9. B 10. A 11. A

A new song by the famous band The Beatles has been released despite half of the band members no longer being alive, thanks to the help of AI.
The Beatles was a legendary British rock band that remained second to Elvis Presley from the 1960s. It was made up of four musicians—John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. The new song, titled Now and Then, is unique because it combined the singing of McCartney and Starr with Lennon, who passed away in 1980, and the guitar skills of Harrison, who passed away in 2001.
The song was initially written and partly recorded by Lennon in the late 1970s and further developed by band mates years later but as technology then was limited, they didn’t release it due to the sound quality not being satisfying.
Peter Jackson, most famous for directing The Lord of the Rings, directed the music video for Norw and Then and it can be watched now online. It was thanks to new Al audio restoration (音频修复) technology that Peter Jackson allowed the four band members to “come together” one last time.
Since its release last week, the song has been well received in the UK. Beatles fans around the world favoured this historic musical event.
”Now and Then is an absolutely heart-warming piece of work, “posted Liam Gallagher, whose hits were affected by The Beatles’ musical style.
Of course, there are those who are not totally interested in the song. ”Now and Then is not terrible. But honestly, it’s kind of boring, “Geoff Edgers wrote in The Washington Post.
The Times in the UK said the song showed Al being used to its best advantage.
12. Why was the song “Now and Then” not released at first?
A. The song was not completed. B. The sound quality was not good enough.
C. The band members did not like the song. D. The song was let out before its official release.
13. How did Peter Jackson contribute to the song?
A. He wrote and recorded the song.
B. He invented new audio restoration technology.
C. He restored the band members’ sound using AI.
D. He played the guitar on the recording.
14. What is the attitude of The Times towards the release of Now and Then?
A. Supportive. B. Curious. C. Unfavourable. D. Unclear.

A. The Beatles Remains Second to Elvis Presley
B. Beatles Fans Welcome the New Song of The Beatles
C. Peter Jnckson Directed the Music Video for The Beatles
D. The Beatles Released a New Song with the Help of Al

36-year-old Mary was a single mother living in a small town in Cleveland, Ohio with her 3-year-old twin sons, Jack and James. She worked hard to provide for her children, doing a few part-time jobs to make ends meet. In spite of the challenges, Mary managed to give them a happy and stable childhood.
One Saturday morning, Mary was at home with her children, preparing breakfast for them. Jack was beside her while James was playing alone in the bedroom next to the kitchen. It was a typical weekend, filled with laughter and warmth. Little did they know something unexpected was just around the corner.
As Mary was busy with the food, a fire broke out in the kitchen. Panicked, Mary took hold of Jack and rushed towards the front door. They made it to safety only to find James remained stuck inside. Mary put Jack down and turned back to get James out, but in such a hurry and panic, she missed a step and fell on the ground. Her right ankle got sprained so seriously that she couldn`t stand up. Mary sat on the ground helplessly, her tears mixed with screams, “My kid is still in the house. Somebody, help me!”
At that very moment, Simon, 52, a former army soldier in the same community as Mary, happened to pass her house and saw the terrible scene. He immediately ran across the yard to ask the crying mother where her kid exactly was. In a shaking voice, Mary responded, “In the bedroom next to the kitchen.” The fire spread quickly and the house was filled with thick smoke. Simon looked around and saw a blanket hanging beside a pool full of water in the middle of the yard.

【答案】范文
Without hesitation, Simon took action. Dipping the blanket in the water pool and covering his head with it for necessary protection, he rushed into the house. Unable to see things clearly through the smoke and fire, Simon lowered himself to the ground, stretched his hands and felt his way forward until he reached the bedroom. Just then, a faint voice of a child caught his attention. Following the sound, he finally found James lying in a corner, frightened and helpless. He grabbed James, wrapped him in the blanket and made his way back towards the open door.
Simon rushed out of the burning house with James in his arms. Seeing James carried to safety, Mary breathed a sigh of relief. At that moment, firefighters arrived at the scene and put out the fire. Then Simon, Mary and her children were all sent to a nearby hospital, where they received timely medical care. Simon’s heroic act saved James’ life. Mary couldn’t thank him enough for his selflessness and bravery. But Simon said smilingly, “It was no big deal. I just did what I was supposed to do.” This experience brought the community closer, and Simon`s courageous act inspired others to consider what they would do in similar situations.

A. It was a gift for their wedding anniversary.

6. Why was the author nervous when the motorcycle driver gave a command?
A. The motorcycle driver could be dangerous.
B. He thought he broke some rules.
C. His wife didn’t want a stranger to take photos for her.
D. The motorcycle driver might not be good at taking pictures.
7. Which of the following best describes the driver of the motorcycle?
A. Rich and generous. B. Kind and straightforward.
C. Creative and responsible. D. Careful and admirable.

B. There are 4500 experts who come from more than 350 universities are working on it.

D. Unclear.
15. What is the best title of the text?
