Steve Clark,45,a musician from Surrey, battled a fear of swimming for most of his life.As a child,he
never took to the water."It always bothered me.I used to look at people swimming on holiday, and think
that I was missing out on the enjoyment of it,"he says.
One bad experience when he was on a business trip in his twenties set Clark back even further. He
decided to take a dip in a hotel pool, thinking that it wouldn't be that difficult. This led to a panic moment
after he lost his footing in the deep end of the pool."I was extremely scared that I couldn't swim,"he says.
But in 2014 Clark decided to take the plunge-after all,he was "running out of excuses"not to.
Helped by the gentle encouragement of his partner,he completed 10 beginners'lessons."It was difficult to
start with.My main fear was putting my head under the water, but the instructors taught me a technique to
help.Once I learnt how to do it,it got me over the fear,"he says. The swimming lessons allowed him to
participate in something that always felt impossible.
Clark's story shows that midlife()is as good a time as any to learn.A study in 2018 by Columbia
University found that healthy older men and women can generate just as many new brain cells as younger
people.
"We used to think of getting older as a loss:a time when we lose skills and lose our looks. But so much
research has shown that losing your abilities is not unavoidable,"says Linda Blair,a psychologist. She
explains that learning skills can help to keep our brains young."The brain is like a muscle,so when you
learn something new, you're exercising it and getting better blood flow to the brain. You're also
reestablishing connections;you don't have to to lose a skill forever, because you can regain it."
24.What initially bothered Clark according to the passage?
A.His panic in a hotel pool.
B.His inability to enjoy swimming
C.His failure in a business trip
D.His lack of encouragement.
25.What does the underlined phrase"take the plunge"in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Accept the fact.
B.Realize his dream
C.Avoid the risk.
D.Have a go.
26.What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?
A.Being old does not necessarily mean losing skills.
B.People can easily learn new skills at any stage of life.
C.Building up muscles can help blood flow into the brain.
D.Seniors can produce as many new brain cells as youths.
27.What does Clark's experience show?
A.No pains,no gains.
B.Every dog has its day.
C.It's never too old to learn.
D.Practice makes perfect.

For decades, positive psychology has centered its research on happiness.Countless books, online
courses and lifestyle guides teach people how to chase pleasure, avoid negative emotions and maximize
daily comfort. The mainstream view holds that a happy life equals a fulfilling life. However,a growing
number of psychologists have begun to draw a clear line between happiness and meaning, arguing that the
two are not identical, and pursuing them brings totally different life experiences.
Happiness refers to short-term pleasant feelings gained from satisfying personal desires:delicious food,
relaxing leisure time, material comforts and easy daily routines. It is passive and easy to disappear once
external favorable conditions fade away.People who only pursue happiness tend to avoid hardships,
challenges and painful experiences, for suffering will directly destroy their sense of pleasure.
A life with meaning,by contrast, focuses on long-term value creation rather than instant pleasure. It
comes from devoting oneself to a goal beyond personal interests:caring for family, contributing to
communities, pursuing lifelong hobbies or taking social responsibilities. The pursuit of meaning often
includes unavoidable hardship, tiredness and setbacks.A volunteer helping poor children may feel exhausted
and stressed every day,yet he still gains a strong sense of life worth that temporary happiness cannot
provide.
Neither pursuit is perfect.A life full of mere happiness lacks inner depth and will easily fall into
emptiness when pleasures end.A life totally devoted to pursuing meaning may bring too much pressure and
neglect personal physical and mental relaxation. The ideal life does not choose one over the other, but strikes
a healthy balance between instant joy and long-term spiritual value.
Chasing happiness satisfies our immediate needs, while seeking meaning anchors our soul.Only
combining both can we live a complete and fulfilling life.
28.What is the passage mainly about?
A.The methods psychologists use to study positive emotions.
B.The differences and balanced relationship between happiness and life meaning.
C.Various ways for modern people to get rid of negative feelings.
D.The reasons why short-term pleasure is hard to last long.
29.Which of the following belongs to the source of pure happiness?
A.Devoting spare time to community volunteer services.
B.Sticking to academic research for public benefits.
C.Enjoying a comfortable weekend vacation at home
D.Persisting in public welfare work for disadvantaged groups.
30.What can we infer about pursuing life meaning?
A.It never involves any painful experiences or pressure.
B.It offers lasting inner value beyond temporary pleasure.
C.It can be easily achieved without any efforts.
D.It is totally useless for people's mental health.
31.What is the author's suggestion for a fulfilling life?
A.Put instant happiness above everything else.
B.Give up personal pleasure to pursue meaning completely.
C.Keep a proper balance between happiness and life meaning.
D.Ignore both pleasure and spiritual value in daily life

When she was 15,Ava Langridge watched a YouTube video that explained how environmental activist
Lauren Singer fit four years of trash (into a 16-ounce bottle.Inspired, the teen carried out a mission to
help her family of five learn to live trash-free.
"Within three months we reduced our trash from three bags a week to less than half a bag a week,"says
the now 17-year-old Langridge, who has more than 45,000 followers on the Zero Waste Teen Instagram
account."Far too frequently, individuals view the concept of zero waste through an all-or-nothing
perspective.I want them to know that even modest efforts can have far-reaching,transformative outcomes."
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the average American produces 4.9 pounds of trash
every day.Although some of that gets recycled, the majority-including millions of tons of uneaten food
and single-use plastic-ends up in the garbage.
Most of us do our part to involve eco-friendly habits into our everyday lives. But some families have
become part of a zero-waste movement:sending nothing to landfills,reducing consumption,reusing as
much as possible,.recycling whatever remains,.and composting(将…制成堆g肥)the rest..That can sound
daunting(令人生畏的)一but the term itself is a bit misleading.
"Zero waste is a mindset shift,"says Kathryn Kellogg of the lifestyle website Going Zero Waste."It's
about progress, not perfection. What's most important is that you go into this with a commitment to wanting
to do better."
And no one expects a family to achieve zero waste overnight."It happens slowly and requires
commitment and teamwork,"says Fredrika Syren,an environmental journalist and founder of Zero Waste
Family."But the good news is that it can happen, one small little step at a time."
In fact, once your family settles into new habits, you might find that reducing your trash is easier than
you expected.
32.Why is Singer mentioned in paragraph 1?
A.To stress the strength of a model.
B.To praise the effectiveness ofleading a trash-free life.
C.To suggest how to become an environmental activist.
D.To explain why Langridge's family started to live trash-free.
33.What message does Langridge want to deliver?
A.Small actions make a big difference.
B.Actions speak louder than words.
C.Where there's life,there's hope.
D.Many hands make light work.
34.What is Kathryn Kellogg's attitude toward the term "zero waste"?
A.She thinks it is perfectly accurate and easy to understand.
B.She considers it useless for promoting eco-friendly habits.
C.She feels it properly represents the idea of pursuing perfection in waste reduction.
D.She believes it is deceptive because it ignores the importance of progress
35.What might be talked about in the following paragraphs?
A.Why should we go zero waste?
B.What does zero waste mean?
C.How to go zero waste.
D.When to start zero waste.

I met Gunter on a cold, wet and unforgettable evening in September.I had planned to fly to Vienna and
take a bus to Prague for a conference.Due to a big storm,my flight had been delayed by an hour and a half.
I touched down in Vienna just 30 minutes before the departure of the last bus to Prague. The moment I got
off the plane,I ran like crazy through the airport building and jumped into the first taxi on the rank without a
second thought.
That was when I met Gunter.I told him where I was going, but he said he hadn't heard of the bus
station.I thought my pronunciation was the problem,so I explained again more slowly but he still looked
confused. When I was about to give up,Gunter fished out his little phone and rang up a fiiend. After a
heated discussion that lasted for what seemed like a century,Gunter put his phone down and started the car.
Finally, with just two minutes to spare,we rolled into the bus station.Thankfully, there was a long
queue (still waiting to board the bus.Gunter parked the taxi behind the bus, turned around, and looked
at me with a big smile on his face."We made it,"he said.
Just then I realized that I had zero cash in my wallet.I flashed him an apologetic smile as I pulled out
my Portuguese bankcard. He tried it several times, but the card machine just did not play along.A feeling of
helplessness washed over me as I saw the bus queue thinning out.
At this moment,Gunter pointed towards the waiting hall of the bus station. There,at the entrance, was
a cash machine.I jumped out of the car, made a mad run for the machine, and popped my card in,only to
read the message:“Out of order.Soy.”

One possible version:
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am one of your customers. I ordered a pair of shoes for my mum as a gift for her birthday. To my disappointment, there are the following problems.
To begin with, it didn't arrive on schedule, which missed my mum’s birthday. Besides, not only is it the wrong size but it is also of wrong color. What bothers me most is the quality of the shoes. They are not made of genuine leather, and give off a bad smell. I am not satisfied to have received such poor service, and I believe I am qualified to ask you to handle it. I hope you can either return my money or deliver a new pair to me.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,

读后续写
I ran back to Gunter and told him the bad news. “Sorry, I can’t take cash out.” I said embarrassedly, with my face burning. Hearing my words, Gunter replied with the familiar smile on his face, “That’s OK, just go ahead, you can pay me at your convenience.” So surprised and moved was I that I couldn’t say a word out. As the bus queue became shorter, Gunter pointed toward it and said to me, “It is your turn.” Realizing it was time to leave, I took out my notebook, asked Gunter’s number and wrote it down hurriedly. At the same time, I promised firmly that I would call him and paid him back as soon as possible.
Four days later, when I was back in Vienna, l called Gunter as promised. The moment Gunter picked up the phone, I couldn't wait to introduce myself. Gunter seemed to know I was going to call, and he said softly, "I know." We made an appointment to meet at the departure place. As we met the following day, I hugged him tightly like we were long-time-no-see old friends, and I expressed my great gratitude to him. I paid him back and offered an extra $10 tip, however, he refused the tip, only to accept the taxi fare, saying “It is not a big deal.” Suddenly, a warm current washed over me. It was at that time that I realized that a small kindness action could make such a big difference!

【原文】W: Thanks for coming today, Nick. Now, can you tell us about what you do?
M: Yes, I organize holidays for people who can’t see.
W: It must be difficult to travel to a place when you have problems with your sight. What kind of holidays do you offer?
M: We have a variety of options, including city breaks, beach getaways, and activity camps. The camps are in highest demand because we offer sailing.
W: Are there any unforgettable moments?
M: Last month, we had a new adventure in the mountains. It involved hiking, rock climbing, and biking. I was filled with pride to see the smiles on our customers’ faces.

【原文】M: I’m with Sophie Rudd, who adds colors to old black-and-white photos by hand, using crayons and inks. Sophie, how did you learn to do it?
W: Well, I started by looking for a teacher, but didn’t find anyone. But I found plenty of skilled people online and learned from some useful videos.
M: Is that how you developed your approach to working with historical photos?
W: Yes. Before I start selecting which colors to add to the photos, I look carefully at what’s in them and then collect information about it.
M: And now you’ve published a book of historical photos.
W: Yes! A well-known historian saw my photos on social media and got in touch. We’ve worked together a lot since then. That’s how the book got published. I was so happy when teachers said the book got young students much more interested in history.
M: So what are your plans for the future?
W: I’d like to share my experiences, so I’ll organize presentations to local groups about my fascination with old photos.

【原文】Hello everyone. I want to update you on our new school building! As you know, there have been three main stages in the building project. Firstly, planning, and we welcomed advice from you, parents and teachers. The next step, design, went on for more time than we predicted. But the third stage, construction, has now finished ahead of schedule. So, let me give you more details. You will notice how light the classrooms now are, thanks to larger windows, and how the sound is much better too. Even when the corridors are full at break times, classrooms should still be quiet with the doors closed. This was important, but not easy to achieve! The new facilities are all completed. We received a generous donation from local businessmen, which allowed us to build several music rooms and an art studio. They will be open for students after school. We wanted the local community to be part of our school too. So anyone living in the area will be able to use the sports center for a small charge. We want you all to find out where everything is in the new building. So, we are putting together a display, showing where all the rooms are and what they look like. Come and take a look!
