How should schools practise for earthquakes? In October 2025, the China Earthquake Administration and the Ministry of Education published a new national guide for middle and primary schools. It is the first guide of this kind for the whole country.
The guide explains each step: get ready before the practice, stay safe when shaking starts, leave the building after the shaking, and deal with sudden problems. It also shows different safe actions in classrooms, libraries and playgrounds.
If a school has a screen that shows an earthquake warning, the guide tells teachers what to do when the warning changes. It also plans for too many people on the stairs and for students who need help. After every practice, schools should talk about what went well and what to improve.
When disaster strikes, practice turns fear into action. Clear rules and regular practices help students protect themselves and help classmates.

On 17 October 2025, nearly 1,900 teachers and students at Hutubi No. 4 Middle School in Xinjiang joined a surprise earthquake practice. Nobody knew the exact time before the alarm rang.
At 12:05, the alarm suddenly sounded. Teachers guided students to cover their heads and get down. When it was safe to leave, everyone bent down, protected the head, and followed the planned way to the open playground. Classes counted students one by one. In about 120 seconds, the buildings were empty and no one was left behind.
After the practice, doctors and nurses showed how to help hurt people. Local safety workers also explained how to stay safe after shaking stops. The surprise practice tested whether the school plan really worked.
A practice without much notice helps students stay calm when disaster strikes. Fast, careful action and clear teamwork matter more than noise.
1. Why was the practice called a surprise practice?
A. Because there was no alarm at all.
B. Because the school told the time a week early.
C. Because only teachers knew the plan.
D. Because nobody knew the exact time before the alarm.
