It shows the green idea of “3Rs”.

What do you do to reduce waste in daily life?
Have you ever reused something old? What did you turn it into?
And what about "recycle"? Do you sort your waste at home?
P89
The green idea of "3Rs" (reduce, reuse and recycle) is important for managing waste.
"Reduce" means cutting down the use of things. "Reuse" means using something again.
"Recycle" means making waste into useful material to make new things.
Great! We already know the 3Rs: reduce, reuse and recycle. Today we’ll learn a new way to go green: upcycling. Let’s listen to the programme and find out more about it!
a Upcycling allows people to change the environment.
b We can upcycle anything we like.
c Upcycling is a creative way of reusing old things.
Listen to the radio programme and choose the main idea.

Tips:
听前先看选项,圈出关键词;
听时重点捕捉:
① 主题句和高频词:反复出现的词(如 upcycling, reuse)通常就是主旨;
② 概括性表达:注意听开头或结尾的总结句,它们常点明主旨;
③ 排除干扰信息:细节选项(如 “能改造所有东西”)不是主旨,要小心区分。
Listen again and correct the mistakes in the poster below.

Tips:
听前先通读海报,圈出你觉得可能出错的地方;
听时重点捕捉:
① 定义类表达:如 means, is, refers to,它们常用来解释概念;
② 细节纠错点:如 reducing/reusing, wanted/unwanted, new/old 这类易混词,注意区分陷阱信息。

Activities 1 & 2
Hello, welcome to the Green Friends programme. Before we start today’s interview, I’ll first explain an idea, “upcycling”.
Upcycling is a creative way of reusing old things. We can upcycle anything we no longer need. For example, old clothes, unwanted toys and old books. Just like the 3Rs, upcycling can also help the environment. We can use our creativity to give old things a second life. OK. Now let’s start our interview…
In your own words, what does “upcycling” mean to you?
Have you ever upcycled anything?
Exactly! Upcycling is reusing old things in a creative way to give them a second life.
turn old cans/things into flower pots
Do you think recycling and upcycling are the same? Are there any differences between them?

Making comparisons
We can make comparisons with expressions such as They are different because…, and Instead…. We can also use words like more and less, better and worse to compare two or more things.

Tapescript—Activity 3
Host: Today we have Professor Lu, an upcycling expert. Welcome.
Prof. Lu: Thank you.
Host: Can you tell us the difference between upcycling and recycling? How are they different?
Prof. Lu: That’s a good question! Recycling means breaking waste into materials to make new things. For example, if a glass is recycled, it’s broken, heated and turned into a new thing.
Host: What about upcycling?
Prof. Lu: Upcycling doesn’t break things. Instead, we think of new uses for them. For example, we can put a candle in a glass and make it a lantern.
Host: Which do you think is better for the environment, professor?
Prof. Lu: Well, I think upcycling is better. Recycling uses more energy than upcycling. What’s more, upcycling is easy. Also, it can save money. For example, we can turn an old shirt into a new dress or a bag instead of buying one.
Host: Sounds great! I will try upcycling at home.

Try to mark the unstressed words in these sentences.
Function words[功能词/虚词(语法结构、辅助连接)] are often unstressed in normal speech.
e.g.: articles, prepositions, pronouns and conjunctions (冠词、介词、代词、连词)
Improve your pronunciation for clear communication
If we stress them, the meaning can change.
Unstressed words are usually pronounced softly and quickly, with a reduced vowel sound.
① Unstressed: We saw a movie.
Stressed: We saw a movie.
(是我们去看的,别人没去。)
② Unstressed: I can swim.
Stressed: I CAN swim.
(我们看了电影,普通陈述。)
(我会游泳,平铺陈述能力)
(我完全有能力游,反驳别人质疑 “你不行”)
③ Unstressed: This gift is for you.
Stressed: This gift is FOR you, not him.
(专门给你的,不是给他的)
(礼物给你,普通告知)

Phonetics in use
Unstressed words in sentences (2)
Function words are often unstressed in normal speech. If we stress them, the meaning can change. For example, we can use our creativity to give old things a second life. (A strong "our" suggests that we, not others, are responsible.)
Phonetics in use
1. Pollution from factories and cars makes our air dirty.
2. By recycling paper and plastic, we can reduce waste in daily life.
3. Green living helps keep the earth clean and safe for everyone.
Listen and decide which words are stressed and which are unstressed.
Now listen again and repeat.
1. Can you understand the radio programme and get the information about recycling and upcycling?
2. Can you use expressions for defining and comparing properly?
3. Can you talk about your opinions on ways of upcycling?
4. Do you want to develop a habit of living green in your daily life?
Must-do:
1. Listen to and repeat the programme about upcycling and recycling. Pay attention to unstressed words in sentences.
2. Write at least 2 sentences comparing two green ways using the expressions we learned.
3. Preview Reading for writing part on pages 92-95.
Choose to do:
Choose one green way you like best. Make a poster or mind map about it. It should include:
At least 3 green actions you will take in your daily life.
A clear explanation of why you think this green way is helpful.
Try to use comparisons and reasons to support your ideas.
