Two dots joined by a short line seem easy to travel between. But anyone who has climbed a long flight of steps knows that a short distance is not always a quick walk. A useful travel plan begins with a map and then asks what the map does, and does not, show. First, check what you are measuring. The straight distance between two places may be much shorter than the walking route. A river might have only one nearby bridge. A railway line might force you to walk to a crossing. Following the actual path gives a more realistic distance. The map’s scale, which connects a distance on paper with a distance on the ground, helps you estimate it. Height matters too. Some detailed maps show contour lines: lines joining points at the same height. When these lines are close together, the land rises or falls steeply. A simple tourist map may leave them out. Two routes of the same length can therefore feel quite different. One might follow a flat riverside path; the other might climb a hill. The shortest route may demand more effort. Next, think about the people using the route. A symbol for a footpath does not tell you whether your younger brother will enjoy walking it. A staircase may be difficult for someone carrying a heavy bag. Your plan should include pauses that suit the group. Measuring distance carefully is useful, but it cannot decide how often everyone will need a rest or want to stop and look around. Finally, remember that maps cannot keep every detail current. A path can close for repairs. A museum can change its opening hours. Even a very clear printed map may not include these changes. Look for recent local information before leaving, and ask staff when you arrive if anything remains uncertain. Keep the important details with your route rather than expecting one map to contain every answer. None of this makes maps unhelpful. They let us see connections that are hard to notice from one street corner. Their strength is showing space, not predicting every part of a day. Used together with local information and an understanding of your group, a map becomes the beginning of a good plan instead of a promise that the journey will be effortless. 9.Why may the walking route be longer than the straight distance? A.A walker may need to reach a crossing. B.A walker may need extra time for stops. C.A walker may carry a heavy travel bag. D.A traveller may use a different paper scale. 10.What do closely spaced contour lines show? A.The route receives many daily visitors. B.The ground changes height sharply. C.The road stays close to the riverside. D.The footpath has recently been repaired. 11.What is the main idea of paragraph 4? A.A route should suit its walking group. B.Footpath symbols explain everyone’s travel interests. C.Heavy bags make all short walks unsuitable. D.Rest stops matter more than measuring distance. 12.What does the writer think of a travel map? A.It becomes unnecessary once a traveller asks local staff. B.It is useful when combined with other information. C.It gives complete answers if its symbols are clear. D.It works best when every route follows straight lines. 【答案】9.A 10.B 11.A 12.B 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。 根据文章第二段“A railway line might force you to walk to a crossing.” 根据文章第三段“When these lines are close together, the land rises or falls steeply.” 根据文章第四段“Your plan should include pauses that suit the group.” 根据文章最后一段“Used together with local information and an understanding of your group, a map becomes the beginning of a good plan instead of a promise that the journey will be effortless.” D Do you always think that children are smarter than adults (成年人)? You’d be right—— at least when it comes to learning new things. New research shows that children get new knowledge and learn new skills faster than adults. It all comes down to something in the brain called GABA, which helps newly learned material stick in the brain. Researchers have found GABA levels increase (增长) quickly in the brains of children of primary school age while they are learning new tasks or information. However, GABA levels in the brains of adults, aged 18 to 35, don’t change during or after lessons in new tasks and information. “Our results show that children of primary school age can learn more within a given period of time than adults,” said Takeo Watanabe, a professor at Brown University in the US. Dr. Sebastian Frank, from the University of Regensburg in Germany, said their findings agreed with the common opinion that children outperformed adults in their learning abilities. “GABA plays a key role in making learning efficient (有效率的),” added Dr. Frank. The researchers suggested teachers and parents should give children as many chances as possible to develop new skills, from learning the times table to riding a bike. Professor Watanabe said the findings could also be used to help adults learn more efficiently. “For example, a new technology or therapy (疗法) could be developed to increase the level of GABA in the brains of adults.” 13.Which shows the changes in children’s and adults’ GABA levels when they learn new things? A.B.C. D. 14.The underlined word “outperformed” in Paragraph 4 means “________”. A.were the same as B.did better than C.were sure about D.were up to 15.What can we learn from the last paragraph? A.Parents should do everything for their kids. B.Children should learn to ride a bike as early as possible. C.Adults now can learn more quickly because of new therapies. D.Children should be given more chances to learn new skills. 16.What’s the main idea of this text? A.New ways to increase GABA levels. B.Different learning ways of children and adults. C.The reason why children are better at learning than adults. D.Advice on how to develop our learning abilities. 原文第二段提到“GABA levels increase quickly in the brains of children of primary school age while they are learning new tasks or information. However, GABA levels in the brains of adults, aged 18 to 35, don’t change during or after lessons in new tasks and information.”,说明了儿童学习新知识时GABA水平快速上升,成年人的GABA水平保持不变,对应A图。 14. 原文第四段提到“their findings agreed with the common opinion that children outperformed adults in their learning abilities.”,结合前文可知孩子学习新知识比成年人更快,说明了outperformed的含义是“did better than(比……做得更好)”。 15.细节理解题。原文第五段提到“The researchers suggested teachers and parents should give children as many chances as possible to develop new skills”,说明了应该给孩子更多机会去学习新技能。 16. Adolescence (青春期) is important in everyone’s life. I think AI’s help is better than my parents’ for several reasons. When I make mistakes, AI won’t get angry like my parents do. Sometimes, AI is even smarter than my parents and can solve problems they can’t. For example, I once had a physics question, and AI broke it down into simple steps. This helped me understand better. It also gave real-life examples, which made learning easier. When I got bad grades, my parents would criticise (批评) me, but AI wouldn’t. All in all, I will choose AI to help me with my homework, and my parents can take a break! Cui Shenghang, 14, Guangxi When I have trouble with my homework, I like asking my parents instead of AI. Sometimes, it is hard to explain a problem in just a few words. Many students need to describe problems a lot so AI can understand. Also, parents may share their own stories when helping with homework. I enjoy listening to these stories. It is fun to learn more about my parents. At the same time, their stories help me think more creatively. Parents also use kind words when teaching. This makes children feel better and more confident. If parents don’t know the answers, they can use AI first and then explain them to their children. C A map can make a journey look simple. D Do you always think that children are smarter than adults (成年人)? Adolescence (青春期) is important in everyone’s life. It includes a lot of big changes.
