①One winter morning, Tapiwa Chiwewe was driving to work in Johannesburg, South Africa. He noticed a haze (薄雾) hanging over the city and it didn’t take long for him to realize that it was the pollution we suffered from.
②At that moment, Chiwewe felt it necessary to do something about it, but didn’t know what. He was a computer engineer and knew little about environmental science.
③He first did research on air pollution and found that it is the world’s biggest environmental health risk. He decided to work on it in a cooperative (合作的) way with scientists, officials, and engineers who helped him develop a deeper understanding of the situation, as well as an idea to improve it.
④Through years of work, Chiwewe and his coworkers from South Africa and China created an online air—quality decision support system. Based on historical and real—time data, the system can correctly predict air pollution and air quality, which can help people make better decisions about their daily movements, as well as help officials better manage their operations.

⑥What if Chiwewe hadn’t worried about researching the problem and done something about it? What if he had just hoped that someone, somewhere, was taking care of the matter? As Chiwewe said, “Why not just go ahead and deal with the problem as well as you can in your own way? You may be pleasantly surprised.”

I used a knife to open the box. Inside the box there were some clothes, two guns, and coins from many different countries. At the bottom of the box there was a piece of cloth wrapped around some papers.
My mother counted out the coins the Captain owed her. I picked up the papers wrapped in cloth. Then we heard a noise. “It’s only seven o’ clock,” my mother said. “I haven’t finished counting my money.”
“There’s no time, Mother,” I said. “We must go before the men come.”
As we left the inn, I heard the sound of running feet. “They’re coming, Mother,” I said. “Run quickly.”

Three of the men broke down the door. They ran inside. Then one of them shouted, “Bill’s dead!”
Another man shouted, “The box’s open. Someone’s opened it. But there are coins inside.”
“We don’t want the coins,” the blind man shouted. “Where’s Captain Flint’s map?”
“It’s not here,” a man said.

完形填空
In our lives, we often face moments that test our courage and determination. When we encounter difficulties, some of us may feel like giving up. However, the key to success lies in our ability to keep going even when things get ___1____.
Life is full of challenges. Whether it is a difficult exam, a competitive sport, or a personal goal, we all face obstacles___2___the future way. The difference between those who succeed and those who fail is not always talent. Often, it is simply the___3___to persevere.
When we fail at something, it is natural to feel disappointed. But instead of letting failure___4___ us, we should use it as a learning experience. Every mistake teaches us something valuable. As the saying goes, “Failure is the mother of success.” This means that failure is not the end, but rather a___5___to grow and improve.
One important quality that helps us persevere is patience. Many great achievements are not made ___6____. They require time, effort, and dedication. Thomas Edison, for example, failed thousands of times before he successfully invented the light bulb. He did not give up because he believed in his goal. His story shows us that___7___is possible if we are willing to work hard.
Another key factor is self-belief. If we do not believe in ourselves, it becomes very difficult to keep going. We must trust that we have the ability to___8___our goals. This confidence helps us stay motivated when we face setbacks.
Finally, it is important to remember that we are not alone. Friends, family, and teachers can offer support and encouragement. Sometimes, just knowing that someone believes in us can make a big difference. When we share our struggles with others, we often find that we are not the only ones facing challenges.
In conclusion, perseverance is the secret to success. It is not always easy, but it is always worth it. By staying patient, believing in ourselves, and___9___help when we need it, we can overcome almost any obstacle. Remember, the journey may be hard, but the destination is ___10___.

Many people believe that money can buy happiness. But is that really true? A growing body of research suggests that beyond a certain point, more money does not necessarily make us happier.
According to a famous study by researchers at Princeton University, there is a threshold (门槛) income — around $75,000 per year — beyond which additional income does not significantly improve emotional well-being. Below that threshold, money does matter: people who struggle to meet their basic needs experience more stress and unhappiness. But once basic needs are met, more money has surprisingly little effect on daily happiness.
So what does make us happy? Research points to several key factors. First, relationships matter most. People with strong social connections — family, friends, and community — report higher levels of happiness than those who are isolated. Spending time with loved ones, sharing experiences, and feeling supported are far more important than a bigger bank account.
Second, meaningful work contributes to happiness. This does not necessarily mean a high-paying job. It means work that gives us a sense of purpose and accomplishment. Volunteers, teachers, and artists often report high job satisfaction even when their incomes are modest.
Third, health is fundamental. Without good physical and mental health, it is difficult to enjoy anything else. Regular exercise, adequate sleep, and a balanced diet are investments in our happiness that money cannot replace.
Fourth, experiences bring more joy than possessions. Studies show that people are happier when they spend money on experiences — like travel, concerts, or a nice dinner with friends — rather than on material goods. Experiences create memories and strengthen relationships, while possessions often lose their appeal over time.
Of course, this does not mean money is unimportant. Money provides security and freedom. It allows us to meet our needs and pursue our interests. But the key insight is that money is a means to an end, not the end itself. Once our basic needs are met, the pursuit of more money at the expense of relationships, health, and meaningful experiences is likely to leave us less happy, not more.
1.According to the passage, beyond what amount does more money not significantly improve happiness?
A.$50,000 B.$75,000 C.$100,000 D.$150,000
2.Which of the following contributes to happiness according to the passage?
A.Owning a large house. B.Having a high-paying job.
C.Strong social connections. D.Buying expensive possessions.
3.The underlined word “modest” in Paragraph 4 probably means “________”.
A.very high B.not large C.extremely low D.average
4.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Money is the most important thing in life. B.Money can buy happiness if you have enough.
C.Beyond basic needs, money matters less for happiness. D.Rich people are always happier than poor people.

⑥What if Chiwewe hadn’t worried about researching the problem and done something about it? What if he had just hoped that someone, somewhere, was taking care of the matter? “We don’t want the coins,” the blind man shouted. “Where’s Captain Flint’s map?”
