In November 2024, Italy returned 56 cultural relics (文物) to China. These objects were illegally (非法地) taken to Europe many years ago. Most of them were from Gansu, Qinghai, and Shaanxi. The event showed that China and Italy are working well together to stop the illegal trade of cultural relics, China Daily noted.
The return of lost cultural relics is important in many ways. For the countries holding these objects, returning them is the right thing to do. It helps bring back parts of history and shows respect to the countries where the relics came from. As the website Returning Heritage points out, the act is “a way of doing justice (正义) for past wrongs”.
For the receiving country, getting back cultural relics helps boost (提升) national pride. It is also good for the economy (经济), because these objects can draw more tourists to visit museums and historical places. There will also be more money spent on protecting the objects and improving museums, which will create more jobs. Besides, returning relics can encourage scientific studies and help people learn more about history and culture.
On an international level, returning cultural relics is seen as an act of goodwill. It helps countries get along better, understand each other more and open the door to greater cooperation (合作) in the future.
However, getting cultural relics back is difficult. Laws often don’t cover past actions, making it difficult to take action on them. Also, the longer relics stay abroad, the more likely the present owners are protected by local laws, making it more challenging for the original owners to get them back.
China is working hard to bring home lost cultural relics. According to Xinhua, up to 17 million relics have been taken away since the 1840s. China has successfully brought back more than 2,113 cultural relics over the past 12 years. China has also signed (签署) agreements with 27 countries to deal with the stealing and illegal export (出口) of cultural objects.
16. What is the main idea of the first paragraph?
A. It is illegal to trade cultural relics.
B. China got cultural relics back from Italy.

18. According to the passage, which is NOT the benefit of getting back cultural relics?
A. It can encourage more cultural products.
B. It can develop the job market and tourism.
C. It can help people learn about history and culture.
D. It can improve the country’s economy and national pride.
19. What makes the return of lost cultural relics difficult, according to paragraph 5?
A. The continued illegal trade of cultural relics.
B. The challenges of finding the original owners.
C. The limits of laws in dealing with cultural relics.
D. The high cost of international transportation.
20. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?

What if we could easily become a genius like Albert Einstein? U.S. author Daniel Keyes explores such a possibility in his book Flowers for Algernon. The main character, Charlie Gordon, has an extremely low IQ. When scientists offered him a chance to become a genius by accepting a newly discovered surgical procedure (外科手术), this happy and innocent man agreed to try it.
Then he had the operation (手术). Gradually, his IQ increased, eventually going over 200, reaching genius-level. Charlie mastered Physics and Math, and easily learned new languages. Before that, he was not able to write correct sentences. However, he found that the real society was so ugly and full of narrow-mindedness, and human beings were not honest and pure, which made him feel painful and no longer happy. Luckily, the effects could not last forever. As time passed, Charlie’s intelligence decreased, and he became feeble-minded (迟钝) once more.
None of us would want to be unintelligent. On the other hand, we might dream about how wonderful it would be to be a genius and always imagine all the extraordinary things we could learn or create. In fact, geniuses come with their own pitfalls. Some people may be jealous of your talents and hurt you. Other people may admire your intelligence but hardly understand you. Instead of dreaming of high intelligence, perhaps those of us with average intelligence should feel grateful for the mind we’ve been given.
21. How did the writer start this article?
A. By describing a famous person—Albert Einstein.
B. By talking about the school life of a low-IQ kid.
C. By introducing the book Flowers for Algernon.
D. By evaluating (评价) a surgical procedure.
22. What did NOT happen after Charlie accepted the operation?
A. He became a successful and cheerful boy.
B. He succeeded in difficult subjects like Physics and Math.
C. He learned different languages without difficulty.

23. Which word can take place of the underlined word “pitfalls” in paragraph 3?

25. Where can you most likely find this article?
A. A science book. B. A medical advertisement.
C. A poster of Children’s Day. D. A magazine of book reviews.

19. What makes the return of lost cultural relics difficult, according to paragraph 5?

A. He became a successful and cheerful boy.
B. He succeeded in difficult subjects like Physics and Math.
C. He learned different languages without difficulty.
D. He had high IQ and had a better ability in learning.
23. Which word can take place of the underlined word “pitfalls” in paragraph 3?
A. confirmations B. disadvantages C. talents D. responsibilities
24. Why does the writer share this story?
A. He admires high IQ people and encourages people to have the operation.
B. He hates smart and successful people who get a lot of chances.
C. He wants to remind people to cherish themselves and be grateful.
D. He likes this book a lot and wants more people to read it.
