“When you heat iron to a certain point, it moves like water,” says Tom Joyce, whose 45-year career could be seen to last several lifetimes. When he speaks of iron, you can hear the respect in the voice of this soft-spoken artist. He uses every tool available — from basic sketchbooks to CT scanning and 3-D printing — to reveal the metal’s rare character.
Joyce was born in Oklahoma, where his parents taught him that every part contains a clue to the whole, whether that’s a color, shape, or handicraft of civilization. Joyce found his medium when family affairs took him to El Rito, New Mexico. A third grade teacher there changed the course of his life when she allowed him into the studio one day after school, gave him a piece of clay, and let his hands do the talking.
At 13, Joyce wandered into the workshops of Peter Wells, who was restoring historic printing equipment for the Museum of New Mexico. Wells decided to give the earnest kid a try. After watching Joyce work for several days, Wells, one day, handed Joyce the shop keys and left. In the end, Joyce landed a summer job there.
From then on, Joyce decided to work full time and struck a deal with the Museum of New Mexico to let him spend hours in their basement with objects that he refers to as “teachers”. He learned techniques by tracking the marks made by smiths and built a collection of potential design solutions. In his early 20s, Joyce moved to Santa Fe and opened his own shop. Graduating to more demanding custom architectural metal work, he continued to seek out teachers.
For the past decade, Joyce has taken his work to an industrial scale through a rare relationship with a large factory outside of Chicago. As for what’s to come, whether it’s new collaborations with industries or different tools in his hands, Joyce will continue to track, with keen precision, the character of iron.
24.What can we infer about Tom Joyce’s artistic approach?
A.A rejection of modern machines. B.A complete reliance on computers.
C.A combination of tradition and technology. D.A focus on chemical changes.
25.What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A.The early inspirations for his artistic journey.
B.The influence of his parents’ life philosophy.
C.The process of finding his working medium.
D.The influence of his teacher’s trust.
26.What drove Joyce’s growth from a teenager to a shop owner?
A.His continuous pursuit of the craft. B.His desire for great wealth.
C.Financial support from museums. D.Growing demand for metal works.
27.What can we learn from Tom Joyce’s story?
A.Well begun is half done. B.Experience is the best teacher.
C.Opportunity knocks only once. D.Strike while the iron is hot.
【答案】24.C 25.A 26.A 27.B
根据第一段““When you heat iron to a certain point, it moves like water,” says Tom Joyce, whose 45-year career could be seen to last several lifetimes. When he speaks of iron, you can hear the respect in the voice of this soft-spoken artist. He uses every tool available — from basic sketchbooks to CT scanning and 3-D printing — to reveal the metal’s rare character.( “当你把铁加热到某个温度时,它就像水一样流动。”
根据第二段“Joyce was born in Oklahoma, where his parents taught him that every part contains a clue to the whole, whether that’s a color, shape, or handicraft of civilization. Joyce found his medium when family affairs took him to El Rito, New Mexico. A third grade teacher there changed the course of his life when she allowed him into the studio one day after school, gave him a piece of clay, and let his hands do the talking.( 乔伊斯出生于俄克拉荷马州,父母在那里教他:每一个部件都蕴含着整体的线索,无论是颜色、形状,还是文明的手工艺。乔伊斯在家庭事务带他前往新墨西哥州埃尔里托时,找到了自己的创作媒介。在那里,一位三年级教师改变了他的人生轨迹——某天放学后,她允许他进入工作室,给了他一块黏土,让他的双手去表达一切。)”可知,第二段主要讲的是乔伊斯艺术旅程的早期灵感来源。
26.细节理解题。根据第三段“At 13, Joyce wandered into the workshops of Peter Wells, who was restoring historic printing equipment for the Museum of New Mexico. Wells decided to give the earnest kid a try. After watching Joyce work for several days, Wells, one day, handed Joyce the shop keys and left. In the end, Joyce landed a summer job there.( 13岁时,乔伊斯偶然走进了彼得·威尔斯的工作室。当时,威尔斯正在为新墨西哥博物馆修复历史印刷设备。威尔斯决定给这个认真努力的孩子一个机会。在观察乔伊斯工作数日之后,有一天,威尔斯将工作室的钥匙交给了他,便离开了。最终,乔伊斯在那里找到了一份暑期工作。)”以及第四段中“In his early 20s, Joyce moved to Santa Fe and opened his own shop. Graduating to more demanding custom architectural metal work, he continued to seek out teachers.( 二十出头时,乔伊斯搬到了圣菲,开设了自己的工作室。随着他逐步承接难度更高的定制建筑金属加工工作,他继续寻找那些能指导他的“老师”。)”可知,乔伊斯从 13岁进入工坊当学徒,到主动在博物馆地下室钻研古法铁艺、积累设计方案,再到20多岁开设个人工作室,推动他持续成长的核心动力是对铁艺工艺的不懈钻研与追求。
27.推理判断题。根据文章大意以及第四段中“From then on, Joyce decided to work full time and struck a deal with the Museum of New Mexico to let him spend hours in their basement with objects that he refers to as “teachers”.( 从那时起,乔伊斯决定全职工作,并与新墨西哥博物馆达成协议,获准在他们的地下室里花费数小时,与他称之为“老师”的物件为伴。)”

A corn plant knows how to find water in soil with the very tips of its roots, but some varieties appear to have lost some of that ability, according to a Stanford-led study. With climate change intensifying droughts, the findings are vital for developing corn varieties with stronger adaptability.
An essay, published in the journal Science, notes how plant roots branch toward water and avoid dry spaces in soil. “Plants are wise in the way they ‘see’ where water is in soil, and the genes (基因) that are responsible for that play an important role in helping the plant create a root system that is enhanced for efficient water uptake,” said Jose Dinneny, the study’s senior author and a professor of biology in Stanford’s School of Humanities and Sciences.
The Dinneny lab had previously revealed the fine sensitivity of corn roots for spotting water, and further studies showed that this sensitivity heavily depended on the specific variety of corn.
For this study, the researchers developed a new, simplified way to study water sensitivity in roots, making it possible to analyze the responses of 250 corn varieties that reflect the genetic pool present in modern corn reproducing. They discovered that corn varieties adapting to grow in tropical (热带的) or subtropical areas like Mexico were very good at making new root branches toward water and avoiding dry areas. In contrast, the varieties adapting to temperate (温带的) regions of North America frequently grew roots in many directions without distinguishing between dry and wet areas in the soil.
This work was made possible through an international cooperation of several research groups. “Researchers need to better understand the interaction of these genetic pathways before corn varieties can be developed with more drought-adaptive root systems, but the findings highlight the importance of studying these localized responses at root tips”, said lead author Johannes Scharwies, a postdoctoral scholar in Dinneny’s lab.
28.Which of the following drives the research on more adaptable corns?
A.Worsened soils.
B.More severe droughts.
C.Poorer water quality.
D.Greater demand for corn.
29.What does paragraph 2 focus on about the research?
A.Its procedure. B.Its significance.
C.Its theoretical basis. D.Its practical value.
30.What can be inferred about corn varieties from temperate regions?
A.They exhibit stronger drought resistance.
B.They tend to grow roots deeper into the soil.
C.They are genetically superior in water absorption.
D.They are less efficient in adapting to water distribution.
31.What is the suitable title for the text?
A.Farm Innovation: Corn Grown in Localized Soil
B.Genetic Differences in Corn Varieties’ Root Growth
C.Corn Roots: Adaptability and Genetic Insights in Drought
D.New Methods in Researching Corn Root Water-Sensitivity
根据第一段中“With climate change intensifying droughts, the findings are vital for developing corn varieties with stronger adaptability. (随着气候变化加剧干旱,这些研究结果对于培育适应性更强的玉米品种至关重要。)”可知,日益严重的干旱推动了适应性更强的玉米相关研究。
29.主旨大意题。根据第二段“An essay, published in the journal Science, notes how plant roots branch toward water and avoid dry spaces in soil.
根据第四段“For this study, the researchers developed a new, simplified way to study water sensitivity in roots, making it possible to analyze the responses of 250 corn varieties that reflect the genetic pool present in modern corn reproducing.

In a crowded subway, Alaina Demopoulos was immersed in her book when a passenger’s ironic comment broke her concentration,“I wish I had your confidence doing this in public.” While Demopoulos’s engagement was genuine, the comment highlighted a widespread trend: performative reading — acts of public reading motivated not by simple personal enjoyment, but by a desire for intentional social display.
“You can still observe people reading physical books on subway,” says Emily Foster, a cultural analyst at the Urban Communication Institute.“But our recent study shows that 68% of commuters(通勤者) choose to read in part for how it might be seen by others.” This behavior, she explains, is driven by the influence of social media, which encourages individuals to increasingly curate their personal image in every public place. In this trend, a book, traditionally a source of knowledge, becomes a carefully picked fashion item, allowing readers to silently present their interests and cultural preferences, even though the primary motivation may often be an urge to appear smart and cultured.
However, this public performance of reading still generates measurable social benefits.“Simply seeing people engage with serious books in public makes reading seem more common and accepted,”noted Foster, who views this return of print books to public spaces as a positive development. This increased visibility not only promotes conversations about literature but also leads to more book recommendations among commuters, creating informal learning opportunities and finally fostering a broader cultural appreciation for reading throughout the community.
Last month, a non-profit organization placed public service advertisements in over 20 subway stations, aiming to inspire passengers to“Dive into a Book”. For those inspired to begin their own public reading journey, the key is simply to focus on personal growth rather than public performance. By choosing material they genuinely enjoy, readers can find a balance between personal satisfaction and the identity they wish to show.
32.When does a person engage in performative reading?
A.When reading for personal enjoyment.
B.When aiming to impress others publicly.
C.When choosing to read during travel time.
D.When showing genuine engagement in reading.
33.Which word can best replace the underlined word“curate” in Paragraph 2?
A.Shape. B.Mask.
C.Simplify. D.Monitor.
34.How does Emily Foster view the public reading trend?
A.She sees it as a problematic act in public.
B.She recognizes its valuable social impact.
C.She stresses personal reading satisfaction.
D.She views it as a sign of spreading personal image
35.What does the author suggest readers do in the last paragraph?
A.Choose books according to their popularity.
B.Put inner fulfillment before social impression.
C.Balance personal growth with public performance.
D.Read books recommended by non-profit organizations.
【答案】32.B 33.A 34.B 35.B
根据第一段中“While Demopoulos’s engagement was genuine, the comment highlighted a widespread trend: performative reading——acts of public reading motivated not by simple personal enjoyment, but by a desire for intentional social display.( 尽管德莫普洛斯的阅读态度是真诚的,但这句话揭示了一个普遍现象:表演式阅读——即并非出于单纯的个人乐趣,而是为了刻意展示社交形象而进行的公开阅读行为。)”
根据划线单词句中“This behavior, she explains, is driven by the influence of social media, which encourages individuals to increasingly .. their personal image in every public place.( 她解释说,这种行为是由社交媒体的影响所驱动的,社交媒体鼓励人们越来越多地在每个公共场所……自己的个人形象。)”可知,curate 本义为“精心策划、打理”,句中搭配“个人形象”,表示人们在社交媒体影响下,会在公共场合精心塑造自己的对外形象。A选项shape意为“塑造、打造”,语义最贴合。
34.推理判断题。根据第三段中“However, this public performance of reading still generates measurable social benefits. Simply seeing people engage with serious books in public makes reading seem more common and accepted,” noted Foster, who views this return of print books to public spaces as a positive development.( 然而,这种公开的阅读表演仍带来了可观的社会效益。“仅仅看到人们在公共场所阅读严肃书籍,就让阅读显得更加普遍和被接受。”福斯特指出,她认为纸质书籍重新回归公共空间是一种积极的发展。)”可知,艾米丽·福斯特认为这种公共阅读趋势能带来显著社会效益:让阅读更普遍、更易被接受,促进文学交流与书籍推荐,最终培养社群的阅读文化。可见她认可这一趋势具备积极的社会价值。
35.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“For those inspired to begin their own public reading journey, the key is simply to focus on personal growth rather than public performance. By choosing material they genuinely enjoy, readers can find a balance between personal satisfaction and the identity they wish to show.( 对于那些希望开启公开阅读之旅的人而言,关键在于专注于个人成长,而非公众表现。通过选择真正喜爱的内容,读者能够在个人满足感与展示自我身份之间找到平衡。)”可知,作者在最后一段给出核心建议:公共阅读的关键是专注个人成长,而非公开表演;选择自己真正喜爱的读物,在此基础上实现个人满足与形象展示的平衡,本质是将内在满足放在社交印象之前。

Teenage years are a critical period for emotional growth, and books serve as windows to different lives and feelings. 38 Through following characters’ experiences, teenagers learn to recognize and understand various emotions. This helps them better handle their own feelings and relate to others.
39 Many books for teenagers convey themes of courage, kindness, determination, and responsibility. They learn from characters’ experiences and apply these lessons to their own lives. Reading also introduces them to diverse life choices, helping them clarify their own ambitions and develop a positive life attitude.

【答案】36.B 37.E 38.A 39.C 40.G
上文“In an age filled with digital distractions, it is difficult for people to read a book.(在一个充满数字干扰的时代,人们很难静下心来读一本书)”指出了当下阅读的困境;下文“Regular reading shapes teenagers into more thoughtful, empathetic, and positive individuals.(经常阅读能把青少年塑造成更深思熟虑、更有同理心和更积极的人)”转而强调阅读的积极意义。
37.上文“When teenagers read widely, they expand their vocabulary, improve their language expression, and strengthen their logical thinking.(当青少年广泛阅读时,他们会扩大词汇量,提高语言表达能力,加强逻辑思维)”列举了阅读带来的多种具体技能;下文“These benefits not only boost their grades in subjects like Chinese and English, but also develop their ability to analyze and solve problems.(这些好处不仅提高了他们在中文和英文等科目的成绩,还培养了他们分析和解决问题的能力)”中的“These benefits”指代空处内容。 E项中的“These skills”与上文的“vocabulary, language expression, logical thinking”相呼应。
38.上文“Teenage years are a critical period for emotional growth, and books serve as windows to different lives and feelings.(青少年时期是情感成长的关键时期,书籍是不同生活和感受的窗口)”指出书籍能让青少年接触不同的情感;下文“Through following characters’ experiences, teenagers learn to recognize and understand various emotions.(通过了解书中角色的经历,青少年学会了识别和理解各种情绪)”具体描述了这一过程。 A项中的“This experience”承接上文,“step into others’ shoes”对应下文的“recognize and understand various emotions”。
39.下文“Many books for teenagers convey themes of courage, kindness, determination, and responsibility. They learn from characters’ experiences and apply these lessons to their own lives. Reading also introduces them to diverse life choices, helping them clarify their own ambitions and develop a positive life attitude.(许多青少年书籍传达了勇气、善良、决心和责任的主题。他们从角色的经历中学习,并将这些经验应用到自己的生活中。阅读还向他们介绍了多样化的生活选择,帮助他们明确自己的抱负,培养积极的生活态度)”主要讨论了阅读对青少年价值观和人生观的影响。空处为本段主题句,总结本段核心内容。所以C项“阅读引导青少年树立积极的价值观和人生观。”概括了本段主旨。
40.上文“In summary, reading offers countless benefits to teenagers — improving academic skills, cultivating empathy, and shaping positive values.(总之,阅读为青少年提供了无数的好处——提高学术技能,培养同理心,塑造积极的价值观)”对全文进行了总结。

A. introduced介绍;B. limited限制;C. committed承诺;D. reduced减少。前文“Mr. Vedder has impacted my life in ways even I cannot imagine.(韦德先生以我无法想象的方式影响了我的人生。)”
A. insisted on坚持;B. allowed for考虑到;C. dreamed of梦想;D. competed in参加比赛。根据空格后“becoming famous like every other student of my age(像同龄的其他学生一样成名)”可知,年少的学生往往会怀揣成名的憧憬,dreamed of意为“梦想”,符合年少的状态。
A. broke打破;B. stepped迈步;C. looked看;D. slipped滑倒。
A. recommend推荐;B. forget忘记;C. realize意识到;D. guess猜测。根据空格后“what I truly wanted to do: write.(真正想做的事:写作。)”
A. duty义务;B. weakness弱点;C. confusion困惑;D. passion热情。
A. amused逗乐;B. inspired激励;C. damaged损坏;D. disturbed打扰。
A. found发现;B. rewarded奖励;C. provided提供;D. brought带来。
A. ball球;B. bag包;C. ticket票;D. book书。根据后文“in my hand or a story to write”与写作相关的,所以“书籍”最符合语境。
A. academic学术的;B. curious好奇的;C. enthusiastic热情的;D. honest诚实的。 Vedder was there to make all of us feel that the day was going too fast”可知,老师对工作充满热情,是一个热情的榜样。。
根据上文“Even on the darkest”可知,此处应当是与darkest和longest相近的形容词,用来形容处境不容易,hardest符合语境。
A. extend延伸;B. occur发生;C. change改变;D. end结束。 Vedder was there to make all of us feel that the day was going too fast, and we didn’t want it to”可知,觉得一天过得太快,应该是不想结束。。
A. friendship友谊;B. entertainment娱乐;C. education教育;D. investigation调查。
A. agreement协议;B. argument争论;C. comparison比较;D. association关联。根据空格后文“Unlike any other teacher I have ever seen, Mr. Vedder can connect with his students better than the students themselves.”
根据后文“to having him as a friend”可知,韦德是老师也是朋友,即“有韦德先生做老师就等于有他做朋友”,为短语be equal to表示“等于”。。
A. grateful感激的;B. responsible负责的;C. eager渴望的;D. fit合适的。 Vedder has changed my life forever and for the better”可知,韦德老师让作者的生活变得更好,作者因此感激他。
Classical Works Stay Popular In Modern Days
Retold for centuries, 56 story of Prometheus (普罗米修斯) has changed from a story of power struggle into a symbol of revolution and spreading new ideas. In some understandings, Prometheus, 57 took fire away from the gods, clearly shows the deep conflicts between new 58 (arrive) and local people.
Later, writers like Percy Shelley (1792-1822) rewrote him as a 59 (fear) hero who went against rulers. This figure touched Chinese thinkers in the early 1900s. They used Prometheus to stand for brave revolutionaries 60 (bring) Marxism into China.
“Prometheus remains 61 (wide) known because generation after generation has continued to tell his story. People have interpreted 62 shared it in different ways.” says Huang Yue, a professor of comparative mythology at Beijing University.
Traditionally 63 (define) as the study, translation and interpretation of ancient Greek and Roman texts, classical studies 64 (become) active again in recent years, especially after the World Conference of Classics held in Beijing in 2024. The event brought together more than 400 scholars from over 30 countries and regions 65 (discuss) the contemporary relevance and global significance of classical studies.
56.the 57.who 58.arrivals 59.fearless 60.bringing 61.widely 62.and 63.defined 64.have become 65.to discuss
分析句子可知,interpreted(解读)与 shared(传播)是两个并列的谓语动词,动作顺承,用并列连词and连接。
时间标志in recent years(近年来)是现在完成时的典型标志;主语classical studies为复数,所以为have become的填入。

I’ve spent my adult life as a college professor teaching people how to think more creatively and use more of their brainpower. Interestingly, this lifetime passion was awakened by a casual contest when I was a child.
At a family picnic for employees of the company where my father worked, they held contests for the children. I was 13, full of enthusiasm and the spirit of competition, so I launched myself into the contests. The grand final, the handkerchief-throwing contest, I realize now, was not meant to demonstrate any real skill, but simply for laughs. But it stirred my love of thinking outside the box.
The host gave each of the dozen children a cloth handkerchief and told us the winner would be the one who threw it the farthest. The first throwers, the little ones, took mighty wind-ups, but when the cloth left their hands, it opened and flew to the ground a few inches in front of them. The next kids threw harder and harder, but with no better results. The older the children, the more the crowd laughed at the poor results.
It was obvious that using the same technique would not work. “Think out of the box!” I said to myself. Suppose I tied a rock inside the handkerchief? No, it was “throw a handkerchief,” not a rock and a handkerchief. When they inspected it, I’d be disqualified. The secret was not to throw harder but to keep the cloth from opening. I had to make the handkerchief fly like a rock. Like a rock! That was it! I began tying the handkerchief around itself to make it small and hard, like a rock.
When I approached the line, people were laughing already, anticipating a tall, big boy like me throwing it a few inches. I took a long wind-up, and the balled handkerchief rocketed off into the trees maybe 60 feet away.
Paragraph 1: “That’s not fair,” a man said. “It’s cheating.”
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2: Inspired, the rest kids started to explore other ways to throw farther.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1: “That’s not fair,” a man said. “It’s cheating.” Murmurs of agreement rippled through the crowd. My face burned with embarrassment — had I really broken the rules? But the host stepped forward and picked up my handkerchief. He examined it carefully, then turned to the audience. “The rule said ‘throw a handkerchief,’” he announced. “It didn’t say you couldn’t fold it. This young man used his brain. That’s not cheating — that’s creativity!” A round of applause replaced the complaints. That moment taught me a lesson: constraints are not walls, but invitations to think differently.
Paragraph 2: Inspired, the rest kids started to explore other ways to throw farther. One girl tied her handkerchief to a small stick and flung it like a spear. Another boy wet his handkerchief and twisted it into a tight rope, sending it spinning through the air like a propeller. Each child experimented with wild, imaginative methods. Even the little ones, who had failed earlier, now ran back to the line with newfound determination. That day, a simple contest transformed into a celebration of ingenuity. And for me, it ignited a lifelong passion for creative thinking.

D

The Benefits of Reading for Teenagers
In an age filled with digital distractions, it is difficult for people to read a book. 36 Regular reading shapes teenagers into more thoughtful, empathetic, and positive individuals.
Reading improves teenagers’ academic performance and thinking abilities. When teenagers read widely, they expand their vocabulary, improve their language expression, and strengthen their logical thinking. 37 These benefits not only boost their grades in subjects like Chinese and English, but also develop their ability to analyze and solve problems.
Reading develops teenagers’ emotional intelligence and empathy.
In summary, reading offers countless benefits to teenagers — improving academic skills, cultivating empathy, and shaping positive values. 40

The Joy of Reading
Good morning, everyone. I’m Li Hua. It’s my great honor to talk about the joy of reading. Reading, which plays an important role in our life, can not only help us learn more but also improve our skills.
I didn’t like reading in junior high school. But after reading some interesting stories, I gradually fell in love with it. Now whenever I feel tired or upset, reading calms me down and brings me joy and confidence. It has become my best friend.
Reading is a lifelong journey. Let’s read more and enjoy its beauty.
Thank you!
