Maintaining a healthy weight involves more than just the numbers on a scale — it’s about understanding your body’s needs.
Wang Yan, a physician at Raffles Hospital Beijing with over 30 years of experience, noted that teenagers often receive mixed messages about body image. “Many believe that being thin means being healthy, but visceral fat(内脏脂肪) can still be present in those who appear slim,” she explained. Different from subcutaneous fat(皮下脂肪) which sits just beneath the skin, visceral fat surrounds internal organs and is more closely linked to long-term health risks. While body mass index (BMI)is a handy tool for assessing weight, BMI=weight (in kilograms)/height (in meters)2, Wang advised teenagers to be careful. “It’s best to use growth charts to understand BMI rather than adult rules,” she said, noting that temporary weight gain often balances out as height increases. BMI also has its limitations — for instance, a teenager with a normal BMI might still carry excess body fat. She recommended considering additional indicators, such as the body roundness index (BRI) for a fuller picture of health.
BRI range for relatively healthy people: 4.5-5.5
Beyond numbers, Wang pointed out that poor stamina(耐力) during activities like running could signal potential weight-related issues. Still, she emphasized it’s not solely about weight — regular exercise improves stamina.
21. Which of the following are most probably the target readers of this text?
A. Adults. B. Teenagers. C. Parents. D. Doctors.
22. Which of the following should we watch more to assess our healthiness?
A. Visceral fat. B. Subcutaneous fat.
C. Slimness. D. Weight.
23. Which of the following is more regarded as being healthy according to Wang Yan?
A. BMI=22.5; BMI=6. B. BMI=26.4; BMI=5.6.
C. 170cm, 58kg; BRI=4.9. D. 160cm, 68kg; BRI=4.6.
B 22. A 23. C
根据第二段中的“Wang Yan, a physician at Raffles Hospital Beijing with over 30 years of experience, noted that teenagers often receive mixed messages about body image.(北京莱佛士医院的王燕医生拥有30多年的从业经验,她指出青少年经常收到关于体型的各种矛盾信息)”以及“Wang advised teenagers to be careful.(王医生建议青少年要谨慎对待)”可知,文章多次围绕青少年的体重健康问题展开,目标读者最可能是青少年。故选B项。
根据第二段中的““Many believe that being thin means being healthy, but visceral fat can still be present in those who appear slim,” she explained. Different from subcutaneous fat which sits just beneath the skin, visceral fat surrounds internal organs and is more closely linked to long-term health risks.(她解释道:“很多人认为瘦就意味着健康,但外表苗条的人体内可能依然存在内脏脂肪。”内脏脂肪与位于皮肤表层下的皮下脂肪不同,它包裹着内脏器官,并且与长期健康风险的关联更为紧密)”可知,内脏脂肪和健康风险联系更密切,因此我们更需要关注内脏脂肪来评估健康状况。故选A项。
根据第二段中的“While body mass index (BMI) is a handy tool for assessing weight, BMI=weight (in kilograms) /height (in meters)2, Wang advised teenagers to be careful.
B
I was 68 when I first stepped on stage as a standup comedian in 2003. I’d never set foot in a comedy club before. I’ve always been a performer - I’ve worked as a singer, actor and musician - but all that came to an end after 9/11. I live in New York, and we watched the twin towers fall from my apartment building. For a year afterwards, nobody wanted to go out or be entertained.
It was then that I started to think about comedy. I realised people needed to laugh, to enjoy themselves again, and thought that with a little training I could do it. I took a few classes, tried to work out a routine, and finally plucked up the courage to get up on stage. That first time was terrifying. I had no idea what the audience would make of me.
In New York, comedians are typically young men with beards. It’s hard enough to break through as a woman, even harder as someone old enough to be their grandmother. As I stepped on stage that first time, people laughed nervously. They were clearly surprised to see me. I introduced myself, stated my age and tried my first joke. There was silence. But by the time I got to the third line, people were properly laughing, I was addicted.
Now my sets differ. I might be on stage for 10 minutes in front of a dozen people, or my one-woman show is a full hour in front of a crowd of 100. Even today, I’m nervous before I step out. My first line is, “Hello, everybody. I’m 88 and three-quarters years old. I’m telling you that in case I don’t make it all the way through the show.” Then people laugh and I relax.
After a show, people young and old come up to me, saying what an inspiration I am. They say they want to be as active as me when they reach my age. I’m pleased I can show that as an older person you don’t need to take a back seat in life.
I’ve no intention of stopping comedy. I’m taking all these pills, trying to stay alive, and I hope to still be performing when I’m 100. My goal is to still be up there making people laugh. It’s hard work, but it stops me being bored. I’d only be playing golf otherwise
24. What made the writer take up comedy?
A. She wanted to overcome her fears B. She wanted to brighten others’ lives
C. She was unwilling to quit performing D. She wanted to work out a routine
25. Why does the writer mention young men with beards in Paragraph 3?
A. To show the challenge she was facing
B. To explain her attraction to the job
C. To illustrate her special advantage
D. To describe her new friends in comedy
26. How has the writer made progress since her first performance?
A. She now performs before larger audiences
B. She no longer feels nervous before performances
C. She remains on the stage for a longer time
D. She has learned to make a joke of her age
27. Which of the following statements would the writer agree with?
A. Age is just a number
B. Advancing years bring greater wisdom
C. Old age means a chance to sit back
D. Being elderly means you have to slow down
B 25. A 26. D 27. A
根据第二段的“It was then that I started to think about comedy. I realised people needed to laugh, to enjoy themselves again, and thought that with a little training I could do it. (就在那时,我开始思考喜剧。我意识到人们需要笑,需要重新享受生活,我想只要稍加训练,我就能做到)”可知,作者从事喜剧是因为她想让人们的生活快乐起来,重新享受生活。故选B。
25.推理判断题。根据第三段的“In New York, comedians are typically young men with beards. It’s hard enough to break through as a woman, even harder as someone old enough to be their grandmother.(在纽约,喜剧演员通常是留胡子的年轻人。作为一个女人,想要突破已经很困难了,对于一个年纪大到已经是他们祖母的人来说,就更难了)”推知,作者提到留胡子的年轻人是为了表明她所面临的挑战——性别和年龄。故选A。
根据倒数第三段的“Even today, I’m nervous before I step out. My first line is, “Hello, everybody. I’m 88 and three-quarters years old. I’m telling you that in case I don’t make it all the way through the show.” Then people laugh and I relax.(直到今天,我出门前还是很紧张。我的第一句话是:“大家好。我88又四分之三岁了。我告诉你这些是为了以防我没能撑到最后。”然后人们笑了,我也放松了)”可知,作者自第一次表演后尝试用调侃自己的年龄做开场,这样自己和听众都很放松。故选D。
27. 推理判断题。根据倒数第二段的“They say they want to be as active as me when they reach my age. I’m pleased I can show that as an older person you don’t need to take a back seat in life.(他们说,当他们到了我这个年纪时,他们想和我一样活跃。我很高兴我能证明,作为一个老年人,你不需要在生活中退居二线)”和最后一段的“I’ve no intention of stopping comedy. I’m taking all these pills, trying to stay alive, and I hope to still be performing when I’m 100.(我无意停止演喜剧。我吃了这么多药,努力活下去,我希望我100岁的时候还能继续表演)”推知,作者认为年龄只是一个数字而已,无论到了哪个年龄阶段,我们都可以做自己喜欢且有意义的事情。故选A。
C
Nano-and microplastic particles (NMP) are increasingly polluting urban and rural landscapes, where bees and other beneficial insects come into contact with them. Whereas the harmful effects of NMP in water and for individual species are well documented, there have as yet been no systematic reviews on how the particles affect agricultural ecosystems.
To fill this gap, the authors of a novel(新颖的) review summarized 21 already published individual studies for the first time. They were interested particularly in the question of how pollinating insects and other beneficial insects come into contact with NMP and what consequences the ingestion(摄入) of the particles has for them, as well as for the ecosystems that are dependent on them and for agricultural production.
In this way, the researchers first succeeded in identifying different sources from which NMP end up on agricultural land, including plastic films, fertilizers, polluted water, and atmospheric deposition(沉积). The plastic particles accumulate in the soil, and pollinators and beneficial insects that are important for pest control ingest them from the air and food or use them to build nests.
The authors of the study establish that the bees’ ingestion of NMP leads, for example, to damage to their digestive system, to a weakening of their immune system, and to changes in their behavior. This makes the bees more easily infected by diseases, possibly causing them to pollinate plants less effectively. A decline in pollination services has a negative effect on crop yield. Thus, plastic pollution could further aggravate existing uncertainties in the global food supply, the researchers warn.
However, there is still a long way to go. For example, only little data is available on important pollinators and beneficial insects. In addition, the current data fails to separate the effects of different sizes and amounts of NMP. Researchers urgently need to conduct further studies to better understand the growing problem of plastic pollution and find solutions to it.
28. What do we know about the new review?
A. It is pioneering of its kind.
B. It shows how bees harm NMP.
C. It centers on the harmful effects of NMP in water.
D. It fails to record how the particles affect agricultural ecosystems.
29. How did the researchers come to the conclusion about NMP’s influence?
A. By filling the gap between two reviews.
B. By identifying different sources of NMP.
C. By solving the question of how NMP affect bees.
D. By studying existing published relevant research.
30. What does the underlined word “aggravate” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Face. B. Decline. C. Worsen. D. Underestimate.
31. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the last paragraph?
A. To show the review has come a long way.
B. To display the limitations of the findings.
C. To prove the practical use of data from the review.
D. To arouse public awareness of the problem of plastic pollution.
A 29. D 30. C 31. B
根据第二段中的“To fill this gap, the authors of a novel (新颖的) review summarized 21 already published individual studies for the first time.(为填补这一空白,一篇新颖综述的作者首次汇总了21项已经发表的独立研究)”以及第一段“there have as yet been no systematic reviews on how the particles affect agricultural ecosystems.(迄今为止,还没有关于这些颗粒如何影响农业生态系统的系统性综述)”可知,这篇综述是同类研究中首创的。
根据第二段中的“To fill this gap, the authors of a novel (新颖的) review summarized 21 already published individual studies for the first time.(为填补这一空白,一篇新颖综述的作者首次汇总了21项已经发表的独立研究)”可知,研究人员是通过研读已发表的相关研究得出关于微塑料颗粒影响的结论。
根据第四段中的“A decline in pollination services has a negative effect on crop yield.(传粉服务的下降会对农作物产量产生负面影响)”以及“Thus, plastic pollution could further aggravate existing uncertainties in the global food supply, the researchers warn.(因此,研究人员警告,塑料污染可能会进一步aggravate全球粮食供应现存的不确定性)”可知,传粉变差影响产量,塑料污染会让粮食供应的不确定性变得更糟。
根据最后一段中的“However, there is still a long way to go. For example, only little data is available on important pollinators and beneficial insects. In addition, the current data fails to separate the effects of different sizes and amounts of NMP.(然而,前路依旧漫长。例如,关于重要传粉昆虫和益虫的可用数据很少。此外,现有数据无法区分不同大小、不同剂量的纳米和微塑料颗粒带来的影响)”可知,作者写本段是为了说明现有研究成果存在局限性。

Most people believe young people live happier lives. Yet worldwide surveys from 149 countries show a surprising result: the old usually feel happier than young and middle-aged grown-ups. This unexpected discovery encouraged plenty of studies. One important reference is Jonathan Rauch’s 2018 book The Happiness Curve(曲线). Its data show happiness forms a U-shape: people aged 20 — 34 feel pretty happy; their sense of joy falls sharply during middle age. Then happiness rises slowly from age 51 to the mid-80s, and finally becomes higher than that of young adults.
Psychologists separate happiness into two parts of “subjective well-being”. The first is short-term happiness, including sudden joy and good feelings. The second is life satisfaction, which means you feel your life is valuable and you have clear life goals. A 2022 research project by Karwetsky examined both kinds of happiness. It interviewed 1,597 healthy German people from 10 to 99 years old. Researchers divided these people into four age groups. The participants gave marks (from 0 to 100) for their real-time joy and overall life satisfaction, and talked about what they cared about most in life. Researchers also studied other influences such as health, partners, grandchildren and religious ideas.
The key findings: only life satisfaction increases as people get older. Unlike young people, the old do not need quick pleasant feelings to feel satisfied with their lives. Having a partner, grandchildren and religious beliefs improves life satisfaction for people of all ages. Pressure from money problems lowers satisfaction, especially for those aged 50 — 69. Poor health reduces short-term happiness, but it does little harm to the old’s life satisfaction. The study proves the U-shaped happiness pattern.
Researchers also put forward three practical ways to achieve long-term happiness: keep close personal connections; save enough money for later life; and live a meaningful life. In short, people become more satisfied with life as they age, even when they meet difficulties.
32. What does Jonathan Rauch agree with about happiness?
A. It keeps going up all the way.
B. It follows a U-shaped pattern.
C. It keeps dropping as people grow older.
D. It reaches its highest point in middle age.
33. What is the main purpose of Karwetsky’s research?
A. To examine the two kinds of happiness.
B. To explain the U-shaped happiness curve.
C. To prove the existence of two kinds of happiness.
D. To further explore the survey result on happiness.
34. Which age group suffers most from money pressure?
A. Those aged 20 to 34. B. Those aged 35 to 49.
C. Those aged 50 to 69. D. Those in the mid-80s.
35. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. The U-shaped Curve of Happiness. B. The Two Kinds of Personal Happiness.
C. The Key Factors Destroying Happiness. D. The Practical Ways of Solving Troubles.
B 33. D 34. C 35. A
根据第一段“One important reference is Jonathan Rauch’s 2018 book The Happiness Curve(曲线). Its data show happiness forms a U-shape: people aged 20 — 34 feel pretty happy; their sense of joy falls sharply during middle age.(乔纳森·劳赫2018年出版的《你的幸福曲线》一书是一个重要的参考。其数据显示,幸福呈U形:20-34岁的人感到非常幸福;他们的幸福感在中年时急剧下降)”可知,Rauch认为幸福遵循U形模式。
33. 推理判断题。根据第一段“Yet worldwide surveys from 149 countries show a surprising result: the old usually feel happier than young and middle-aged grown-ups. This unexpected discovery encouraged plenty of studies.(然而,来自149个国家的全球调查显示了一个令人惊讶的结果:老年人通常比年轻人和中年人更快乐。这一意外发现促使了大量研究)”、第二段“A 2022 research project by Karwetsky examined both kinds of happiness.(Karwetsky在2022年进行的一个研究项目考察了这两种幸福)”和第三段“The study proves the U-shaped happiness pattern.(该研究证明了U形幸福模式)”可知,Karwetsky的研究目的是进一步探究关于幸福的调查结果。
根据第三段“Pressure from money problems lowers satisfaction, especially for those aged 50 — 69. (经济问题的压力会降低满意度,尤其对50至69岁的人)”可知,受金钱压力影响最大的是50—69岁人群。
35. 主旨大意题。根据全文内容,第一段提出“One important reference is Jonathan Rauch’s 2018 book The Happiness Curve(曲线). Its data show happiness forms a U-shape: people aged 20 — 34 feel pretty happy; their sense of joy falls sharply during middle age. Then happiness rises slowly from age 51 to the mid-80s, and finally becomes higher than that of young adults.

Ah, punctuality — the art of being precisely on time. It’s a concept so deeply rooted in some cultures that even being a minute late can cause a small-scale panic attack. ____36____ Let’s examine whether punctuality is the defining feature of a superior society or merely another subjective construct.
Each part of the world has a unique relationship with time, enriching the fabric of global culture. In Japan, for example, you’re always expected to arrive on time, and preferably a few minutes early.
____37____ Tough luck, but the next one will be there precisely on the dot. In contrast, the Philippines has a more relaxed approach to time. If someone says 3 o’clock, arriving around 3:30 is common and expected. This isn’t laziness, but a cultural preference for living in the moment.
But does being punctual make a culture more advanced? The Swiss are celebrated for their precision and punctuality, often cited as a perfect example of efficiency. Their trains run on time, their watches are the gold standard. ____38____ And Switzerland is often ranked as one of the most developed and happiest countries in the world, but let’s wait a bit to conclude.
Consider the case of Brazil, where “Brazilian time” is a well-known concept. ____39____ If you attend a party at the specified time, you’ll likely find the host still in their bathrobe. Many Brazilians have a laid-back approach to life. They don’t sweat the small stuff like running five minutes late because they’re busy enjoying life. Many live by the motto, “Tudo bem,” which means “It’s all good.” Honestly, they seem to be onto something.
So, is punctuality essential? It depends on what cultures you are in. Whether you’re a stickler for punctuality or more laid-back, what truly matters is how you spend your time. ____40____ Let’s try to find that middle ground where we can respect others’ time while embracing the joy of living in the moment. Ultimately, time is just a construct, and life is too short to stress about being late.
A. Miss a train by a minute?
B. Punctuality is timeless art.
C. But is punctuality essential?
D. In this context, punctuality is flexible.
E. You could set your clock by their daily routines.
F. There, being late is not only accepted but expected.
G. Are you enjoying the journey or constantly watching the clock?
C 37. A 38. E 39. F 40. G
36.上文“It’s a concept so deeply rooted in some cultures that even being a minute late can cause a small-scale panic attack.(守时这一概念在某些文化中根深蒂固,以至于哪怕迟到一分钟都可能引发一场小规模的恐慌)”强调了守时在部分文化中的重要性。
37.上文“In Japan, for example, you’re always expected to arrive on time, and preferably a few minutes early.(例如,在日本,人们总是被要求准时到达,最好还能提前几分钟)”说明了日本对守时的严格要求。空后“Tough luck, but the next one will be there precisely on the dot.(运气不好,但下一班列车会准点到达)”提到了“下一班列车”,可推断空处与“错过列车”相关。 故选A。
38.上文“The Swiss are celebrated for their precision and punctuality, often cited as a perfect example of efficiency. Their trains run on time, their watches are the gold standard.(瑞士人以其精准和守时而闻名,常被奉为效率的完美典范。他们的列车准点运行,手表是业界标杆)”详细描述了瑞士人的守时和精准。空处需要进一步补充瑞士人守时的表现,与前文为顺接补充关系。E项“你可以根据他们的日常作息来校准时钟。”形象地体现了瑞士人作息的规律性和守时性,是对前文“精准和守时”的进一步说明,符合语境。故选E。
39.上文“Consider the case of Brazil, where “Brazilian time” is a well-known concept.(以巴西为例,“巴西时间”是一个众所周知的概念)”引出巴西的时间观念。空后“If you attend a party at the specified time, you’ll likely find the host still in their bathrobe.(如果你按指定时间参加派对,很可能会发现主人还穿着浴袍)”说明巴西人对迟到的包容。
40.上文“Whether you’re a stickler for punctuality or more laid-back, what truly matters is how you spend your time.(无论你是严守守时的人还是更随性的人,真正重要的是你如何度过时间)”强调“如何度过时间”比“是否守时”更重要。

It is really convenient for us to shop online without going out, which can save much time. Besides, goods online are cheaper and there are various products for us to choose from.
However, online shopping has its problems. We can only see pictures instead of real goods, so we cannot ensure their quality. What’s worse, customers may get cheated easily and online payment carries some risks.

In the busy city of New York, a man named Alex spent nearly 30 years searching for his long-lost childhood best friend, Sam. Growing up together in the same neighbourhood, they had shared countless memories and adventures. From exploring hidden corners of the neighbourhood park to sharing secrets under the night sky, their friendship was a storybook tale. But when Sam’s family suddenly moved away during their teenage years, that story was left unfinished. Despite the passage of time, Alex never forgot Sam and the bond they shared.
Over the years, Alex tried every possible means to locate Sam. He checked old phone books, contacted many friends, and even used social media, but all his efforts were in vain. It seemed as if Sam had disappeared into the air. Yet, the bond they once shared kept Alex’s hope alive.
One day, while looking through an old photo album, Alex came across a faded picture of Sam and himself, taken during a summer camp they had attended as kids. The photo captured(记录下) Sam’s wide smile and his signature gesture, running his hand through his brown thick curly(卷曲的) hair. Alex couldn’t help recalling their happy times—swimming in the lake, telling stories by the campfire and laughing together.
Feeling hopeful, He got in touch with the camp organisers, hoping they might have some clues. Luckily, the camp had maintained records of past attendees and they were able to provide Alex with a list of potential contacts. Weeks passed as Alex reached out to each name on the list. It wasn’t until he contacted the last name on the list that he finally got a breakthrough.
The person on the other end of the line was Sam’s cousin, who had kept in touch with Sam over the years. She was excited to hear from Alex and immediately gave Alex Sam’s number.

With shaking hands, Alex picked up his cell phone. The heart racing, he had no idea what to expect. What if Sam didn’t remember him? Barely did he breathe until a voice—familiar yet different—answered, “Alex? Is that really you?” Both choked up. Words seemed inadequate to express the years of longing and the joy of reconnection. By the end of the call, there was only one thing left to do: meet in person. They agreed to meet at the old neighbourhood park. As Alex hung up, a smile spread across his face.
When Alex approached the park entrance, a familiar figure came into view. Sam, running his hand through his brown thick curly hair, greeted him with a bright smile and stepped forward, arms wide open. They hugged tightly, laughing heartily as if no time at all had separated them. The two spent the entire day exchanging stories of the past and the present. Alex was touched to learn that Sam, too, had tried to find him over the years. They were picking up the story right where they left off. No matter how much time had changed, true friendship would never end.

A. To show the challenge she was facing
B. To explain her attraction to the job

26. How has the writer made progress since her first performance?
A. She now performs before larger audiences
B. She no longer feels nervous before performances
C. She remains on the stage for a longer time
D. She has learned to make a joke of her age
27. Which of the following statements would the writer agree with?
A. Age is just a number
B. Advancing years bring greater wisdom
C. Old age means a chance to sit back
D. Being elderly means you have to slow down
D
