What do rubber and an ancient ball game have in common?A lot!Over 3,000 years ago,Mayans (
collected the white milky liquid from the rubber tree-what we know today as natural rubber. They used it to
make not only weatherproof clothing and drinking cups, but also bouncy balls.Who would have thought that
the ancestor of our car tires was flying through the air in ancient Mexico?
In the 18th century, explorers from Europe brought the samples home. But the material smelt strange,
became sticky in the heat and broke up in the cold-not a big seller. It was only when Edward Nairne,a
London instrument maker, accidentally discovered in 1770 that it could be used to remove pencil marks. He
began selling small pieces of rubber as erasers. In the same year, chemist Joseph Priestley described the ability
to "rub"writing and gave the material its name:rubber.
Sometimes it takes a little chaos for great discoveries to be made.In 1839,businessman and amateur
researcher Charles Goodyear accidentally dropped a mixture of rubber and sulphur (onto a hot stove.
Instead of melting, the mixture became springy and strong.Suddenly, natural rubber was suitable for everyday
use:weather-resistant,springy and durable. And yes, without Goodyear, not a single car would be on the road
today-even though he himself never saw a car.The man died in 1860-a full 25 years before the automobile
was invented.
In 1888,a dentist entered the scene:John Boyd Dunlop monkeyed with an air-filled tire for his son's
bicycle.The effect?Less noisy,more riding comfort-a revolution on wheels.The automobile industry soon
adopted the principle. The first car with air-filled tires drove through Clermont-Ferrand,France,in 1895,
home of a future famous tire manufacturer.
24.Why are Mayans mentioned in paragraph 1?
A.To state the early uses of rubber.
B.To create a sense of mystery.
C.To demonstrate the origins of cars.
D.To show the wisdom of ancients.
25.How did the rubber get its name?
A.From the trees that produce it.
B.From the Mayans in Mexico.
C.From its weatherproof function.
D.From its use in erasing pencil marks.
26.Whose discovery broadened the uses of rubber?
A.Edward Nairne.
B.Joseph Priestley.
C.Charles Goodyear.
D.John Boyd Dunlop.

27.Which can be the best title for the text?
A.A Brief History of Rubber

There is growing concern about the impact of social media on the information people encounter that shapes
their beliefs about the world.Misinformation about science and politics can influence voting behavior, support
for research, and people's health-related actions. To explore whether people find true messages more persuasive
than false messages, researchers did studies examining people's reactions.
The first two studies focused on persuasion.Participants and a large language model (LLM)were asked to
generate social media messages designed to be either true or false, covering a set of topics. Then,a second
group rated these statements, judging their truthfulness, their willingness to share them, and the emotions
they aroused.Their belief in each topic was measured before and after reading the statement, with the
difference showing how persuasive the message was.
For both human and LLM-generated statements, participants rated the true messages as more truthful and
were more willing to share them. The true messages increased people's belief in the topic. The only difference
was that untrue human-generated messages slightly decreased belief, while untrue LLM messages had a small,
insignificant effect.
A second set of studies asked individuals (or LLM)generating messages to make them as attention-getting
as possible. When participants rated these messages, the same pattern of results emerged.Again, participants
were able to distinguish the true messages from the false messages and found the true messages more
persuasive.Interestingly, when no truth instruction was given, individuals generating persuasive statements
tended to write statements that were rated by other people as true. However, when these individuals aimed for
attention-getting content, there was a greater tendency for those statements to be false, though they were less
persuasive.
These results offer hope:People seemed reasonably good at distinguishing between true and false
statements, even ones generated by AI.However,a key complexity remains. They only tested what happens
when people see a particular statement once.In real life,we often rely on repeated claims from others,
especially experts,to judge what is true.If we are constantly surrounded by false information,we may
eventually have trouble telling actual facts from merely familiar repetitions.
28.Why was participants'belief in each topic measured?
A.To compare participants'belief shifts.
B.To test participants'willingness to share.
C.To evaluate the truthfulness of statements.
D.To judge the persuasiveness of each message.
29.What do the studies reveal?
A.Persuasion depends on emotional appeal.
B.The truth of a message increases its persuasiveness.
C.False LLM-generated messages reduce belief greatly.
D.People share attention-getting messages more willingly.
30.Which instruction makes statements more likely to be false?
A.Making the messages as persuasive as possible.
B.Ensuring the messages are scientifically accurate.
C.Focusing on topics that are unfamiliar to the participants.
D.Creating statements that are as attention-getting as possible.

31.What message does the last paragraph convey?
A.Familiar claims equal real facts.
B.Information surroundings count.
C.People can recognize lies with ease.

Golden eagles are incredible, magnificent birds.Serving as a keystone species, they rule the skies,
affecting entire ecosystems. This means that they are a top predator (and their presence in an
ecosystem helps maintain the balance by regulating prey populations and influencing animal behavior.
Once these birds were a common sight in England, and Shakespeare mentioned them at least 40 times in
his works. However, during the Victorian era, golden eagles were nearly extinct, and they haven't been seen
over England's skies in over 150 years.
Now,a new program is hoping to change that.Following a study done by Forestry England, eight
potential recovery zones have been identified for the birds, mostly in northern England. The next step is to
figure out the practicalities of releasing the eagles, which may happen as early as 2027.
Though it will take some time, even generations, before the golden eagle population returns to its former
numbers, conservationists in England have taken heart from similar efforts in the north,in Scotland. There the
South of Scotland Golden Eagle Project has successfully raised the number of golden eagles through a careful
mix of translocation and habitat management.
However,concerns remain.Farmers,especially sheep farmers,fear that the eagles,as predators,could
have a negative effect on their valuable lamb stock.Yet Tom Orde-Powlette,a landowner at Bolton Hall
Estate, told news media,"It might not all be negative though-there is evidence that golden eagles might
dislodge many other more generalist predators such as red kites,so they could have a positive impact."
Reintroducing an animal into its former ecosystem is not as simple as one may think. There are many
factors to take into account, from climate changes to technological changes, and yes, local industries.
However, worldwide reintroduction of various species, especially keystone species, has shown that their effect
on the ecosystem can truly revitalize entire regions. Here's hoping that over the next few years golden eagles
will be seen in all their glory over the skies of England.
32.What key role do golden eagles play?
A.Balancing local ecosystems.
B.Decorating the skies.
C.Changing local animal habits.
D.Controlling prey populations.
33.What can we infer about English conservationists from paragraph 4?
A.They feel proud of their own work.
B.They expect immediate eagle recovery.
C.They plan to copy the Scottish methods.
D.They are encouraged by the Scotland project.
34.What does the underlined word "dislodge"in paragraph 5 mean?
A.Cooperate with.B.Drive away.
C.Watch over.
D.Hunt for.
35.What is the author's attitude to the new project?
A.Doubtful and opposed.
B.Cautious but expectant.
C.Supportive and hopeful.
D.Pessimistic but open-minded.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)

If you are a parent, whether you believe in strict boundaries or prefer total freedom in parenting,as with
most things in life,it's all about balance.36 It is a new and modern parenting style that is becoming more
【高三英语第5页(共8页)】
and more popular.
What is lighthouse parenting?
Lighthouse parenting is a new parenting style that focuses on the most important aspects of parenting. It is
all about maintaining the balance between providing your children with guidance, love, encouragement, and
protection.37
Some parenting styles, such as helicopter parenting, are less about giving your children freedom and
allowing them to experience things on their own.Lighthouse parenting,as the name suggests, believes in being
there for your children like a lighthouse is there at night, available and present when needed.38 You
should allow your children to grow, learn to be independent and develop their abilities. The key points of this
parenting style are loving unconditionally, setting the right boundaries, provisioning support and guidance, and
encouraging an open dialogue. With this kind of environment, children can feel confident and supported.
Benefits of lighthouse parenting
There is too much information out there for parents nowadays. But lighthouse parenting seems to be more
direct and balanced.
39 That is because they were given the tools to be independent,to understand the world, and to adapt
to the society. They aren't scared of making mistakes and also take responsibility for themselves.Their parents
are less tired,as they are able to take a step back and be there for their children more in the background.
40 This creates an environment where both children and parents can thrive and enjoy their relationship.
A.It puts too much pressure on parents.
B.And that's the core of lighthouse parenting.
C.However, love and support are always there when needed.
D.Parents should attempt to completely let go in their parenting.
E.Yet you don't make decisions and provide solutions all the time.
F.And it also allows them to make mistakes and learn on their own.
G.Children raised in this style can become healthy and well-adjusted adults.

Seeing them scattered across the truck bed,Dad would 48 them up,and my brother, together with me,

The morning of August 15th began like any other in a school in Nuwakot,Nepal.Principal Rajendra
Dawadi stood at the school gate, watching students stream in with backpacks and laughter. The sky hung low
and grey, and a steady rain had been falling for two days.Nothing seemed terribly wrong-not yet.
By mid-morning,Mr Dawadi's phone rang.It was a text message from the local disaster warning system-
a flood alert. He read it carefully but remained calm."It might be nothing serious,"he comforted himself. He
knew he needed to react quickly.
Soon, another call came. The message carried more urgency than the last.Mr Dawadi's fingers tightened
around the phone. His heart began to race.He stepped outside and looked toward the Trishuli River, which
ran just beyond the school grounds. The water, usually calm and shallow, had turned brown and swollen,
carrying branches and debris (H)at a frightening speed. The old bridge swung unsafely in the wind and
rain.A sense of worry rose inside him.It appeared that something dangerous was on the way.
Suddenly,a parent rushed into the office, dripping with rain."Sir,"he cried,"the river has flooded the
lower road!"Mr Dawadi responded,"I knew.I'll send the children away!"That was the moment when
everything changed.Every alarm bell in Mr Dawadi's mind rang.He grabbed the school's loudspeaker at once
and ran to the center of the campus.
"Listen to me carefully!"his voice thundered across the courtyard."Every class, line up immediately.
Leave your bags.Follow your teachers to the hill.Do not stop.Do not look back.Move now!"
Some students froze in confusion.A few younger ones began to cry.But Mr Dawadi's voice left no room
for argument.Teachers quickly organized the students into lines and rushed them toward the higher ground
behind the school.

M:Scientists in Germany have cast doubt on a previously believed assumption that the
processing speed of our brain starts to decline from the age of 20.Until now,it has been
thought that our level of understanding peaks when we are 20 and declines thereafter.Lead
researcher,Mischa von Krause of Heidelberg University, offered hope to older people who
worry about increasing forgetfulness or reduced brainpower. He said mental abilities are still
powerful at the age of 60 and do not decrease before then. The study was based on data from
over 1.1 million people aged between 10 and 80 years old.The results showed that our mental
processing speed remains relatively constant until the age of 60,but does start to decline from
our seventh decade. The researchers said people's mental processing speed actually increases
in their 20s and remains high until 60.Mischa von Krause said that older people do take
longer to make decisions, but this was because we become more cautious and responsible as
we age.

Dear Jack,
How is everything going?I'm writing to share the career experience activity organized by
our school last Friday.
Many professionals came to our campus to set up different experience posts.Lots of
students crowded around each station, where they actively exchanged ideas with practitioners.
I chose to experience working as an environmentalist.I took part in surveys on waste sorting
and discussed practical green solutions with an environmental worker.
This activity offered me valuable insights.I once thought environmental protection only
meant simple actions. In fact,it requires continuous efforts and creative ideas. It inspires me
to live an eco-friendly life and make small changes to protect our planet.Have you joined
similar activities?Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
