1-5CBABC 6-10BCCAC 11-15 BCCAA 16-20 ABBAA
M: Have you always lived in America?
W: No, I was born in England and grew up in Germany. We moved here because my father found a job.
M: I don’t like Monday mornings. The first two lessons are physics. My brain isn’t ready for that after the weekend.
W: Haven’t you heard? Our physics teacher is off this week. We’re having French first, then English.
W: I can’t believe the room should have seated 40 people!
M: Yes, we have made it larger. We can now have double the number of people than before.
W: I honestly don’t want to continue the gardening tomorrow, Tony. We need to deliver some clothes to our son.
M: Neither do I, but we need to get it done within this weekend, as what our boss said yesterday.
W: Will you try out for the school play?
M: It depends on what it is. I loved being in Hamlet, but I heard the teachers are deciding between Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya, and The Producers, a musical. My singing voice is terrible!
M: We can’t afford that new car, personally.
W: Are you sure? Haven’t we saved a lot of money?
M: Yes, we have, just like my workmate, George. But we need that money.
W: I don’t think so. What for?
M: Our old age.
W: Really? How old are you now? You are joking, aren’t you?
M: Yes, I am. I’ve just bought it for you.
W: Oh, that’s unexpected news.
W: Gomez, what’s in the mailbox?
M: It’s a note from the Smiths. They thank us for seeing their daughter last week when she was in hospital.
W: Is Lily back home now?
M: Should be. When we visited her, the doctor said she’d be able to go back home in two or three days. So far four days have passed, but she won’t be able to return to school until next week.
W: I hope she has recovered now.
M: Jana, do you think age matters for language learning?
W: Well, when you’re young, you learn faster, because there’s nothing else that’s occupying your mind. You’re just studying, but once you start working, it becomes more difficult.
M: I have an old friend named Joseph who is retired and then he started studying French at the age of sixty-five and he’s mastered it well.
W: Oh, really?
M: Yeah. He’s now living in Paris. He’s made many French friends.
W: Why did he start it so late?
M: He has been interested in French culture, but when he was young, he worked in Tokyo and had no time to learn it. So after he retired, he came back to London and began to learn French.
W: Well, I see.
M: So I think learning a language has a lot to do with your motivation and interest because you can start learning later in life and you succeed.
W: So you don’t think age matters when we learn a language, do you?
M: No, I don’t think so.
M: Have you looked for a summer job lately, Maria?
W: Well, things are a bit difficult. I saw some offers for shop assistants, but that seemed boring. I’d love to have a job as a swimming coach, because I studied it last summer.
M: I understand.
W: Anyway, I found a hotel that’s looking for a receptionist. They were happy to meet with me, and I’ll start in two weeks.
M: Oh good! You’ll meet many interesting people in the hotel.
W: Right. Well, the hotel is not close to my house. There aren’t any buses that go there. I’ll just drive. It’s too far to ride my bike.
M: I see. Is that a problem?
W: Hmm, well, I’ll pay a lot for petrol.
M: Where is the hotel? Is it near the beach?
W: No, it’s in the mountains. It’s got a great view. You can see our town and the forest to the west.
M: Wow, cool! Well, I hope you have a lot of visitors.
W: Me too. Well, there’s a new movie at 7:00 this evening in West Theater. Would you like to go to see it together? Mike and Tina will go too.
M: Great. I’ll have dinner with my grandparents first and then I’ll meet you there at 6:30.

Spring 2026 Green Newsletter
This term, we’ll be looking at a new theme and keeping you updated on what we can do to get green!
Food Waste Action Week
This year, we are taking part in the Food Waste Action Week, looking at ways to reduce the amount of food we throw away. It has been proven that creating and sticking to a meal plan can cut food waste. You can take part by sending in your weekly menu plans, and the best will be published on our Socials pages. Keep your eyes peeled and we will be posting some great ideas for using up leftover food from great soups to homemade hair conditioner!
Simpler Recycling
Did you know that from March 31, all student halls across the country will be required to separate food waste? This means that instead of unused food going to landfill and producing greenhouse gases as it rots, it will be sent to treatment plants where it will be made into biofuel. There will be lots more information on what can and can’t be recycled coming soon. If you have any questions, just ask your site teams — we’re here to help!
Earth Hour
Started in Sydney, this now global event asks us to switch off lights and electrical items for an hour on 22 March from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. and enjoy the peace and quiet. No competitions for this, just take a positive step to join a global movement and help tackle climate change!
Plastic Cleared Challenge
Single-use plastics are everywhere — from packaging to takeaway boxes. This April, join our campus-wide challenge to cut plastic waste. Bring your own bags, bottles, and cups. Our Green Representatives will run workshops on spotting hidden plastics and making sustainable swaps. Snap a photo of your plastic-free lunch, share it with Plastic Cleared Challenge, and tag us for a chance to win a zero-waste starter kit!

B
In a village a few kilometres from the West Flanders coast, Nele Bekaert fetches one of several Brabant horses that her family owns. Weighing about a ton, the powerful horse is ideal for pulling a drag net to catch tiny, grey shrimp (虾) in the North Sea. Bekaert rides the horse to the seaside of Oostduinkerke, Belgium.
Upon arrival, she puts on bright yellow waterproof overalls and ties ropes and a large net behind the horse. Two baskets are placed at the animal’s sides. Bekaert skillfully seats herself between the baskets. She leads the horse into the sea until the water reaches the top parts of its legs and they slowly move parallel to the coastline, causing a unique scene. A metal chain attached to the front of the net over the sand, creating “shockwaves” that cause shrimp to jump into the net, while water pressure pushes the catch to the back.
After about 30 minutes, Bekaert and her “co-worker” return to shore. She empties the net, washes and sorts the catch, keeping shrimp and fish that are fully grown, while releasing the small-sized shrimp and baby crabs back into the sea. This helps maintain biodiversity and prevents the unintentional capture of non- target species.
Bekaert is part of a team of 14 active horseback shrimp fishers, formerly known as East Dunkirk Horse Fishers. Each year in Oostduinkerke, they give 36 public demonstrations and participate in a Shrimp Festival, events funded by the government to keep the craft alive.
Nowadays, the old-fashioned method has been entirely replaced by commercial development except in Oostduinkerke. That is thanks to former mayor (市长) Honoré Loones, who saved horseback shrimp fishing from extinction in 1950 by making it a tourist attraction with the first Shrimp Festival. The craft has been supported by the government ever since.
The East Dunkirk Horse Fishers play a vital role in promoting the craft. Members travel for demonstrations at events across Europe. “The tradition is very important,” Bekaert notes. “I’m happy to help preserve and share it.”
24. What makes Bekaert’s shrimp fishing unusual?
A. Her fishing on horseback. B. Her plastic fishing net.
C. Her protective equipment. D. Her fishing off the coast.
25. Which word can best describe Bekaert’s method of sorting the catch?
A. Labor-saving. B. Profit-oriented. C. Sustainable. D. Efficient.
26. Why do the shrimp fishers give so many public demonstrations?
A. To work hard to survive. B. To pass down the ancient fishing skill.
C. To raise funds for the government. D. To commercialize the Shrimp Festival.
27. What can we infer about horseback shrimp fishing?
A. It is expected to die out soon. B. It boosts the global tourism industry.
C. It faced extinction in the past. D. It has threatened commercial fishing.
A 25. C 26. B 27. C
根据第二段中“Bekaert skillfully seats herself between the baskets. She leads the horse into the sea until the water reaches the top parts of its legs and they slowly move parallel to the coastline, causing a unique scene.(Bekaert灵巧地坐在篮子之间。她将马儿引向大海,直到海水淹没马腿的上部,它们缓缓与海岸线平行移动,形成了一幅独特的景象)”可知,Bekaert捕虾的方式之所以独特是因为她骑在马背上捕虾。
【25题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段内容“She empties the net, washes and sorts the catch, keeping shrimp and fish that are fully grown, while releasing the small-sized shrimp and baby crabs back into the sea. This helps maintain biodiversity and prevents the unintentional capture of non-target species.(她将网中的渔获倒出,清洗并分类,保留完全成熟的虾和鱼,同时将体型较小的虾和幼蟹放回海中。这有助于维持生物多样性,并防止意外捕获非目标物种)”可知,Bekaert在捕捞时只留下那些完全长成的鱼和虾。其他小虾和小蟹放归大海,这有助于维持生物多样性,是一种可持续的渔获分类方式。
【26题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“Each year in Oostduinkerke, they give 36 public demonstrations and participate in a Shrimp Festival, events funded by the government to keep the craft alive.(每年在Oostduinkerke,他们都会举办36场面向公众的骑马捕虾技艺演示,并参加捕虾节,这些活动由政府资助,以维持这项手工艺的传承)”和最后一段中““The tradition is very important,” Bekaert notes. “I’m happy to help preserve and share it.”(“传统非常重要,”Bekaert指出,“我很乐意帮助保护和传承它。”)”
根据第五段中“That is thanks to former mayor (市长) Honoré Loones, who saved horseback shrimp fishing from extinction in 1950 by making it a tourist attraction with the first Shrimp Festival.(这要归功于前市长Honoré Loones,他在1950年通过举办第一届虾节使骑马捕虾成为旅游景点,从而使其免于灭绝。)”
C
For decades, scientists hypothesized that cognitively demanding tasks, such as writing or solving math problems, require more energy than easier tasks like scrolling short videos on the phone or looking out of the window. However, recent research proves the view wrong. Our brains perform massively complex and metabolically costly computations all day long. “Whether you’ re engaged in a cognitively demanding task at work, or you’ re staring off into space, your brain is using roughly the same amount of energy,” says neuroscientist Todd Braver of Washington University in St. Louis.
In fact, what feels more challenging is when a task requires the brain to go against its usual habits. Cognitively demanding work often requires the coordination (协作) of many different brain regions in novel patterns, while silencing circuits that frequently fire together.
Studies have found that pushing against our brain’s habits triggers an emotional response, making us feel uncomfortable. “It’s aversive, and it just feels bad,” says Michael Inzlicht, a psychologist from the University of Toronto. But he points out that emotional responses are subjective: They are interpretations of sensations in our bodies and brains. And we can influence how much we pay attention to these sensations and even how we interpret them. We often overestimate the struggle and pain required to complete cognitive tasks. This initial overestimation can lead us to procrastinate, or even avoid the task altogether.
Studies suggest that if we can get past that initial hurdle of starting a task, then thinking becomes easier. One way to do that is to pay attention to the benefits instead of the efforts required. In a study published in the journal Science in 2020, Andrew Westbrook, a neuroscientist at Rutgers University, and his colleagues gave participants the choice of solving an easy memory puzzle for a small amount of money or a much harder puzzle for more money. The options were displayed on a screen, and participants’ eye movements were tracked as they decided which puzzle to attempt. When people spent more time looking at the reward for the challenging puzzle, they were more likely to choose it. If our mind’s eye, or our attentional focus, is on the benefits of an option, over time we’ re more likely to choose to do hard things.
Performing complex mental tasks will also be less painful if the exertion of mental effort is habitized. When we don’t have to make a decision to focus every day, we will save ourselves considering the costs or consequences. To make cognitively demanding tasks a habit, try to do them every day at the same time and in the same place. Add a ritual before the work starts, such as turning off the phone and launching an app to block distracting websites. After a few weeks, concentrating deeply won’t just feel easier; it will actually be easier.
28. People may feel certain cognitive task demanding because of ________.
A. more brain energy consumption B. the complexity of computations
C. the higher level of difficulty D. new coordination of brain parts
29. The author quotes the 2020 study mainly to ________ .
A. support a solution B. present a case
C. analyze the causes D. challenge an assumption
30. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Overestimation promotes efficiency.
B. Personal perception determines motivation.
C. Focusing on rewards enhances performance.
D. Brain counteraction triggers positive emotions.
31. Which of the following can make mental work feel easier?
A. Receiving continuous support when feeling down.
B. Seeking professional help when meeting a deadline.
C. Reading thick literary classics for twenty minutes daily.
D. Breaking down a challenging project into smaller tasks.
D 29. A 30. B 31. C
根据第二段“In fact, what feels more challenging is when a task requires the brain to go against its usual habits. Cognitively demanding work often requires the coordination (协作) of many different brain regions in novel patterns, while silencing circuits that frequently fire together. (事实上,当一项任务要求大脑违背其通常的习惯时,就会感觉更具挑战性。认知要求高的工作往往需要许多不同的大脑区域以新的模式进行协调,同时使经常一起兴奋的神经回路沉默。)”可知,人们可能会觉得某些认知任务要求很高,是因为这些任务需要大脑各部分之间新的协调。故选D项。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。第四段首“Studies suggest that if we can get past that initial hurdle of starting a task, then thinking becomes easier. One way to do that is to pay attention to the benefits instead of the efforts required. (研究表明,如果我们能克服开始一项任务的最初障碍,那么思考就会变得更容易。做到这一点的一种方法是关注收益,而不是需要付出的努力。)”提出解决问题的方案,根据下文“In a study published in the journal Science in 2020, Andrew Westbrook, a neuroscientist at Rutgers University, and his colleagues gave participants the choice of solving an easy memory puzzle for a small amount of money or a much harder puzzle for more money. 故选A项。
根据第三段中“We often overestimate the struggle and pain required to complete cognitive tasks. This initial overestimation can lead us to procrastinate, or even avoid the task altogether. (我们经常高估完成认知任务所需要经历的困难和痛苦。这种最初的高估会导致我们拖延,甚至完全避免这项任务。)”可推知,个人对认知任务的感知会影响其动力,即个人感知决定动力。故选B项。
【31题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Performing complex mental tasks will also be less painful if the exertion of mental effort is habitized. When we don’t have to make a decision to focus every day, we will save ourselves considering the costs or consequences. To make cognitively demanding tasks a habit, try to do them every day at the same time and in the same place. (如果精神努力的付出成为一种习惯,那么执行复杂的脑力任务也不会那么痛苦。当我们不必每天都做出专注的决定时,我们就会省去考虑成本或后果的麻烦。为了让认知要求高的任务成为一种习惯,试着每天在同一时间、同一地点做这些事情。)”可知,让精神工作感觉更容易的方法就是让其成为习惯。故选C项。
D
In conversations with strangers, people commonly tend to think they should speak less than half the conversation time to be likable. But we’ve discovered this idea is wrong. Our data shows that people tend to think they should speak about 45% of the time to be likable in a one-on-one conversation with someone new. However, it appears speaking up a bit more is actually a better strategy.
In our research, we randomly assigned people to speak for 30%, 40%, 50%, 60% of the time in a conversation with someone new. We found that the more they spoke, the more they were liked by their new partners. This was only one study with 116 participants, but the outcome is supported by other researchers’ findings. For example, a previous study randomly assigned one in a pair to take on the role of “speaker” and the other to take on the role of “listener. ” After engaging in 12-minute interactions, listeners liked speakers more than speakers liked listeners because listeners felt more similar to speakers than speakers did to listeners. This outcome suggests the reason people prefer those who speak up: Learning more about a new partner can make you feel like you have more in common with him or her.
Further, we assigned people to speak for up to 70% and even 90% of the time. The result shows it is not an ideal strategy. Our research does not suggest people hold down a conversational partner but rather that they feel comfortable speaking up more than they usually might.
Research like ours can help people gain a ‘more reasonable understanding of social interactions with new people and become more confident about how to make a good first impression. It has the obvious benefit of allowing us to carefully control speaking time. However, it does not reflect more natural conversations. Future research should figure out whether our findings generalize to more natural interactions.
32. What is the common belief concerning conversations with strangers?
A. Speaking a little less is preferred. B. Speaking half the time is the best.
C. Listeners are more likable than speakers. D. Listeners fail to control the conversations.
33. How was the research carried out?
A. By analyzing speaking habits. B. By making comparisons.
C. By listing examples. D. By collecting data.
34. What is the disadvantage of the research?
A. The conversation time is limited. B. Further study is hard to continue.
C. The findings are less widely appliable. D. Interactions with strangers are missing.
35. In which situation can the research finding be applied?
A. Attending a family gathering. B. Partying with your friends.
C. Meeting a new teacher. D. Making a public speech.
A 33. B 34. C 35. C

Have you ever found yourself lost in a book, turning pages without really processing the words? It happens to the best of us. _____36_____ For them, reading isn’t just about understanding the text; it’s about thinking critically, making connections, and engaging with what they’re reading. This is where questioning techniques come into play in reading instruction.
At its core, questioning techniques are strategies used to inspire readers to think critically about what they are reading. _____37_____ Just like how exercise strengthens muscles, asking questions while reading strengthens comprehension skills. It pushes readers to not only understand the story but to analyze it, evaluate it, and sometimes even challenge it.

Which Works Better: Peer Learning or Independent Learning?
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Which Works Better: Peer Learning or Independent Learning?
From my perspective, peer learning works better for most students.
With classmates working together, we can share different ideas, solving problems more efficiently. Not only does it deepen our understanding, but it also builds communication skills. If time permits, group discussions often spark creative solutions that we might never discover alone.
That said, independent learning still matters. What we should do is combine both approaches, using peer learning to exchange ideas while developing self-study habits. Only in this way can we achieve real academic growth.

The tip of my fishing pole jerked twice and then bent in half as the line went tight. “Hey, Grandpa!” I shouted. “It’s Walter!”
“Can’t be Walter,” he said, walking to my side. “I’ve had him on my line many times, but he’s always managed to slip the hook.”
While Grandpa was talking, Walter was swimming. He swam down deep, and then he swam to the surface and cleared out of the river, flapping his tail and shaking his head. Just before he fell back with a mighty white splash, I thought I saw him wink at me. It was such a human gesture that for a moment I forgot he was a fish — he was just another creature fighting for his life, and somehow I admired him for it. But that didn’t make me want him any less, at least then.
“That’s a good-sized trout (鳟鱼), though,” Grandpa said. “Keep your rod (鱼竿) tip up and your line tight.” Then he disappeared back down the riverbank.
“No, Grandpa, wait!” I called, but he was already gone. My arm was getting tired and my heart was beating wildly in my chest. I tried my best to do as I was told. But try as I might, something went wrong. My rod went straight and my line went loose, and when I reeled (卷线) in the hook, Walter was gone.
As we walked back home, Grandpa said, “You’re almost as fine a fisherman as I am, did you know that? Yet some fish are meant to stay in the river.” But I was hardly listening. I felt robbed, as if someone had stolen my bike or something. My eyes were burning, and there was a hot hard knot in my throat. “It’s just not fair,” I moaned.
“Maybe you just need a little bit luck,” Grandpa said, putting his big warm hand on my shoulder and drawing me close. I felt better.
That night I tossed and turned and I dreamed of Walter — I pulled him up on the riverbank, carried him home and got my picture in the newspaper, becoming a world-famous fisherman.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1: Then at dawn I slipped from my bed and went down to the river.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2: When I lifted him from the water, he seemed to stare at me with a sad, wet eye.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Possible version:
Para. 1
Then at dawn I slipped from my bed and went down to the river. I strung the rod, baited the hook and cast the line — just as Grandpa had shown me. Then I waited — through the first light of dawn, through the birds’ morning songs, and through the growing ache in my arms. Suddenly the tip of my pole jerked violently. Holding on tight, I followed Grandpa’s fishing tip: rod tip up, line tight. The trout ran deep, then burst to the surface, flapping his tail and shaking his head wildly. After a long, fierce battle, I finally reeled him into the shallows — silver, enormous, and beautiful beyond words. I had caught Walter!
Para. 2
When I lifted him from the water, he seemed to stare at me with a sad, wet eye. Somehow, my thrill ebbed. The playful Walter who had winked at me the day before was at my mercy, his silver scales dimming in my hands. Something tightened in my throat. Then Grandpa’s words came back to me: some fish are meant to stay in the river. I knelt down, eased the hook from his lip, and set him back into the river. But just before he swam off, I thought I saw the corner of his mouth lift in a great wide smile. I stood there empty-handed, but somehow my chest felt full. Maybe, I thought, that made me a better fisherman than any newspaper picture ever could.

_____38_____ The types of questions asked can vary depending on the level of engagement required. There are easy literal questions that ask for information directly from the text and also inferential and evaluative questions that require readers to read between the lines. There are even predictive questions that encourage readers to make predictions about what will happen next. _____39_____ But together, they create a rich, engaging reading experience that goes beyond just decoding words on a page.
You might be wondering, “Why does this matter?” Can’t students just read and understand on their own? Well, the truth is, reading is more than just recognizing words. _____40_____ In a world overloaded with information, teaching students how to think critically about what they read is more important than ever. Questioning techniques in reading instruction provide students with the tools they need to become thoughtful, engaged, and reflective readers.
A. Each type serves a different purpose.
B. It’s about making sense of those words.
C. Of course, all questions aren’t created equal.
D. They can totally transform the reading experience.
E. But imagine students who are just learning to read.
F. Think of questioning techniques as a mental workout for the brain.
G. Be aware that these techniques can be tailored based on reading levels.
