Jane Goodall is a name deeply connected with wildlife protection. Her groundbreaking work, which began in 1960 in Tanzania’s Gombe Stream National Park, completely changed how scientists view animal intelligence and what makes humans unique. Without a college degree at first, Goodall used great patience and an open mind to study chimpanzees (黑猩猩). She didn’t see them just as animals, but as individuals with their own personalities, feelings, and social lives.
A key moment came when a chimp she named David Greybeard allowed her to watch him closely. She saw him change a twig by removing its leaves and use it to “fish” for termites (白蚁). This was a major discovery because, at that time, scientists believed only humans could make and use tools. This finding challenged the idea that humans were completely different from other animals. As the well-known anthropologist (人类学家) Louis Leakey said, it forced science to rethink the definition (定义) of “human”.
Goodall’s long-term observations led to strong personal connections with the chimps, especially a mother named Flo and her family. These relationships gave her a deep understanding of their family life and social behavior. Her unusual path — earning a PhD from Cambridge University without first getting a bachelor’s degree — showed her strong determination. Knowing she needed to do more, she started the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) in 1977. This organization leads global protection efforts and runs youth programs like “Roots & Shoots”, while also supporting women in science.
Jane Goodall’s legacy (传承) goes far beyond her scientific discoveries. She showed the world that animals have complex emotions and intelligence, which helps people respect nature more. Even into her nineties, she continued to inspire millions to protect wildlife and their habitats. Through her life’s work, Goodall taught us that understanding and valuing other species is essential for the health of our planet and for our own humanity.
4. Why is Jane Goodall’s work called “groundbreaking”?
A. It proved all animals use tools. B. It showed women can be scientists.
C. It created new research methods. D. It changed views on animal intelligence.
5. How did Goodall discover chimpanzees using tools?
A. By reviewing current ideas. B. By doing experiments.
C. By watching David Greybeard. D. By asking local guides.
6. What does Goodall’s bond with Flo show?
A. Short-term studies are effective. B. Close connection deepens research.
C. University degrees ensure discovery. D. Tool usage requires long observation.
7. How does the text develop its main idea about Goodall?
A. By listing life events in time order.
B. By moving from discovery to influence.
C. By focusing on early African research.
D. By comparing different research methods.

Google Translate has improved greatly over the years. In the beginning, it depended on statistical machine translation (SMT), which studied many translations to find the most possible translations. However, in recent years, Google has changed to neural machine translation (NMT), which uses deep learning models to improve accuracy (精确度) by understanding context rather than just individual words.
The system works by translating entire sentences instead of translating word by word. This makes the results sound more natural, especially for European languages, which share similar structures. However, for more difficult language pairs, particularly those with major grammatical differences, the accuracy is lower.
Several studies have been done to measure the accuracy of Google Translate, including research from the UCLA Medical Center. The results show that while the tool works well with commonly spoken languages, it has difficulty with difficult sentence structures and less commonly translated texts. A study by Slator found that Google Translate’s accuracy largely depends on the specific language pairs. For example, translations between English and Spanish are often better than translations that include Asian or African languages, where grammatical structures and cultural differences are very different.
Moreover, research from Smarting shows that Google Translate works best for basic communication rather than professional or law-related translations. While it can provide a general idea of a text’s meaning, it often falls short of delivering correct translations for specialized fields like medicine, law, or marketing.
Despite improvements, Google Translate is not free from errors. First, the tool sometimes translates phrases (短语) word-for-word, resulting in unnatural or incorrect meanings. Second, sentence structures may be incorrect, especially in non-European languages. Additionally, Google Translate has trouble with ambiguous (含糊的) words or cultural differences that require deeper understanding. AI translations often lose the meaning of phrases that are unique to a specific culture.
8. How does NMT differ from SMT?
A. It takes advantage of big data. B. It focuses on structural changes.
C. It gives many translation results. D. It considers the full sentence meaning.
9. What can we learn from Google Translate-related studies?
A. It works poorly for all non-European languages.
B. Cultural differences have little effect on translation.
C. Its translations in law-related fields are fully accurate.
D. Some language pairs produce better results than others.
10. What do the underlined words “falls short of” mean in paragraph 4?
A. Tries one’s best. B. Makes a quick decision.
C. Fails to meet the standard. D. Falls a very short distance.
11. What is an improvement direction for Google Translate?
A. Fewer grammar mistakes. B. Quicker responses.
C. Unique user experiences. D. Offline translation.

Because coffee contains caffeine (咖啡因), people have long wondered whether drinking it might “jazz up” the heart, resulting in effects such as a skipped, missed, rapid, or strong heartbeat.
However, people who drink reasonable amounts of coffee — such as one to three cups per day — appear to have a lower risk of atrial fibrillation (心房颤动), according to a 2019 study co-authored by Dr. Gaziano. The study found that those who drank more or less coffee were neither more nor less likely to develop this condition. Like much of the dietary research, that study was observational: participants reported what they took in, and researchers tracked their health over many years. However, the new study took a different approach, directly measuring the short-term effects of coffee intake.
“This new study provides an important piece of the puzzle,” says Dr. Gaziano. One finding — that people took more steps on coffee-drinking days — supports other research showing that caffeine can produce a small improvement in physical performance. On the other hand, caffeine’s negative effects on sleep are well known, and not getting enough sleep is increasingly recognized as a risk to cardiovascular health. Over time, poor sleep over and over again can lead to more serious health problems than just heart palpitations (悸动).
It is hard to know whether the extra exercise makes up for the reduced sleep that may result from drinking coffee. Most people understand how their bodies react to coffee and change their intake accordingly, notes Dr. Gaziano. Individual differences in caffeine metabolism also mean that the same amount of coffee can affect people very differently.
Like all studies, however, this one has shortcomings. For example, it included only relatively young, healthy coffee drinkers. Therefore, the findings may not apply to older people, who are more likely to experience palpitations. In fact, those who avoid coffee — and thus were not included in the study — may do so exactly because they notice it causes palpitations.
12. How does the author introduce the topic of the text?
A. By presenting a problem. B. By providing data.
C. By referring to an expert. D. By picturing situations.
13. What was special about the new study?
A. It observed sleep habits. B. It examined immediate impact.
C. It focused on long-term fitness. D. It surveyed non-coffee drinkers.
14. Why does Dr. Gaziano mention sleep and exercise?
A. To show coffee’s mixed effects. B. To compare two research types.
C. To suggest methods to stay healthy. D. To prove coffee energizes drinkers.
15. What is the weakness of this study?
A. Short study period. B. Not enough participants.
C. Only a few types of participants. D. Mistakes in handling data.

Cats are known for their independent and aloof (冷漠的) nature. ___16___ While every cat is unique, there are some signs you can look for to determine if your cat will get along with other cats.
___17___ If your cat curves its back upward, it’s a clear sign that they are not comfortable with the new companion. On the other hand, if your cat approaches the other cat with curiosity, it’s a good sign that they may be open to interacting.
Cats are playful creatures by nature. ___18___ If your cat and the new cat are chasing each other, it’s a positive indicator that they are getting along well. On the other hand, if one cat is constantly hiding or avoiding the other, it may be a sign of tension.
Cats can be territorial (领地的) animals, so how they react to sharing can be a good indicator of their acceptance. If your cat is comfortable sharing food, water, and litter boxes with the new cat, it suggests that they are willing to coexist peacefully. ___19___ However, if your cat shows guarding behavior around resources, it may indicate a potential for fights.
Finally, it’s important to give your cats time to adapt to each other. Building a relationship between cats takes patience and understanding, so don’t expect them to become best friends overnight. Allow your cats to interact at their own speed and provide plenty of opportunities for positive experiences together. ___20___

Mary and her little son Andy lived alone and led a hard life. They didn’t have much, but there was always food on the table — for Andy, at least.
To support the family, Mary did three jobs. It was tiring, but Mary didn’t give up. Each day when she finally got home, she’d bring Andy home from a kind neighbor, who attended to her boy for hours daily. Years later when Andy was 15, Mary was still working hard. One morning she crazily looked for the house keys, worried about getting late for work. She had a long day ahead, but she didn’t even make it to her house’s front door. She tried to move the sofa to see if the keys had fallen behind it. At the time, Andy was preparing to go to school.
Suddenly, Mary fell due to long-term lack of sleep. And when she fell, her head hit the sofa’s edge, which caused her to faint (昏厥) immediately. So worried, Andy did everything he could to help his mom. Finally, he took her to hospital.
Hours later, Mary woke up, noticing Andy’s hand on her shoulder. The doctor brought her record for her to read. She soon knew why she was in hospital. And she knew the fall had reduced her sense of hearing to 20%. Mary couldn’t help crying. “What am I going to do now?” she thought as she looked at Andy. With tears in eyes, Andy said, “I love you, Mom!” And it saddened them both again because Mary could hardly make out Andy’s words.
The doctor suggested wearing a hearing aid (助听器). It was very expensive. “Who has that kind of money?” Mary thought, feeling upset and hopeless.
But Andy wasn’t. “Mom has taken good care of me for years. It’s high time that I did something to try to repay her,” Andy thought. He decided to take a part-time job to earn the money for the hearing aid. Since he always got good grades, he decided to work as a tutor (家教) for junior kids.
First, he made advertisements (广告). Then, he put them up in the neighborhood. Attracted, some parents invited him home. After an interview, they hired Andy. Thus, Andy was so busy that he often didn’t get home until dinnertime. He kept it a secret from his mom. Finally, he was amazed he earned enough money. He immediately bought a hearing aid for his mother and studied the instructions (用法说明).
注意:
(1)续写词数应为80左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
One morning when Mary was sleeping soundly, Andy put the hearing aid in her ear.

【答案】4. D 5. C 6. B 7. B

【答案】8. D 9. D 10. C 11. A

【答案】12. A 13. B 14. A 15. C

【15题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Like all studies, however, this one has shortcomings. For example, it included only relatively young, healthy coffee drinkers.(但是和所有研究一样,这项研究也存在不足。例如,它只纳入相对年轻、身体健康的咖啡饮用者。)”可知,研究参与者类型单一,结论不一定适用于其他人。

Hello, everyone! I’m Li Hua, the head of the English Club. Our club was founded in 2018 with the goal of making English learning fun. Back then, only 15 students had joined, and we would meet weekly in a small classroom. Over the years, it has grown into one of the most popular clubs in school, thanks to the passion of all our members.
We offer a diverse range of activities to suit different interests. Every Tuesday, we hold “English Corner” where members can chat freely about movies, sports, or daily life.

【答案】
One morning when Mary was sleeping soundly, Andy put the hearing aid in her ear. Mary awakened to the sounds of birds’ singing and car horns. “Morning, Mom,” Andy said. Mary turned, finding Andy was sitting nearby, smiling. “Is there a hearing aid?” she asked in disbelief. Andy nodded and asked, “How does it feel?” Mary replied that it was incredible, with tears rolling down her cheeks. She was relieved that her son loved her so much and felt blessed to have such a considerate and loving boy by her side through all the hard days they had gone through.
