If you want more self-paced learning, apps like Duolingo are easily accessible on our mobile phones. As our world becomes more interconnected, it’s always good to learn another language or two. Aim for a term of straight As This can be a difficult task but not impossible to achieve, as long as you put in the right amount of effort. If you are struggling with your grades, you can host or join study groups with your classmates! Don’t be disappointed if you are not able to get an A in a term. What’s most important is having the motivation (动机) to go forward, as a famous person once said, “He who would climb a ladder (阶梯) must begin at the bottom.” Experience another culture Culture and tradition are something that all humans share. No matter where we come from, we always bring our culture with us. You can go to a museum, read a book, or try new food in your area. Remember to keep an open mind and take the time to learn about them. Bring a shareable treat to class If you know your way around the kitchen, you can impress your class by making and bringing them a delicious treat! Not only will this make their stomachs happy, but you’ll also bond the whole class together. Just don’t forget to check with your teacher first before bringing one. 1. Spend more time on mobile phones. 2. What is the key if you have trouble getting an A in a term? A. Learning to accept your grades. B. Changing your study method. C. Joining groups with classmates. D. Having the drive to go forward. 3. What is the benefit of bringing a treat to class? A. Improving your own cooking skills. B. Earning extra credit from your teacher. C. Learning about different food cultures. D. Helping build closer connections in class. B On June 17th, ocean rower Lia Ditton set off on a 20-foot-long rowboat, alone and unsupported, in an attempt to set the fastest-ever time for a solo (独自的) crossing from San Francisco to Hawaii, about 2,500 sea miles. Currently, the women’s record stands at 99 days and the men’s record at 52 days. The women’s record goes to the island of Oahu and the men’s record goes to the Big Island. Ditton intends to beat the record for the fastest solo row for any human, man or woman. Ditton is a licensed captain and professional adventurer. The London-born 40-year-old has been training from her base in San Francisco and has spent the final few weeks before setting off wiring her own boat, ensuring all the necessary equipment was on board, and packing enough food for 75 days while keeping her boat as light as possible. For the past several years, Ditton has been preparing herself and her boat, ready to take on the challenge of rowing 5,500 miles from Japan to San Francisco in spring, seeking to succeed where 19 other attempts have failed. She has completed several long training rows off the west coast of America, and most recently, a successful 728-mile, 24-day training row from Ilwaco, Washington, to San Francisco in September 2019. But this week just after Ditton’s start, a tragedy occurred. Fellow distance rower Angela Madsen lost her life during some routine in-water training. The waters that lie ahead aren’t for the faint of heart. The journey will require Ditton to head for the Continental Shelf before facing the possibility of ship encounters, extreme weather, strong currents, and travel through the Shark Café, an area that great white sharks frequent. “The Continental Shelf is always rough, but I love the challenge. I’ll also row right through Shark Café,” says Ditton. “It’s certainly not over until it is over. But I’m ready for everything ahead.” 4. What is Lia Ditton’s goal for the crossing? A. To get the best annual award. B. To be the fastest solo rower. C. To break the women’s record. D. To row for the longest days. 5. What is paragraph 2 mainly about? A. How Ditton is trained every day. B. What Ditton claimed in the past. C. Ditton’s readiness for the crossing. D. Ditton’s past experiences of rowing. 6. What can we infer about Ditton from paragraph 3? A. Madsen’s death will hold her back. B. She is worried about her future path. C. Some other ships will keep her company. D. Her upcoming journey is full of risks. 7. Which of the following can best describe Ditton? A. Fearless but inexperienced. B. Brave and determined. C. Well-trained and intelligent. D. Energetic but emotional. C Handwriting notes in class might seem old-fashioned as digital technology affects nearly every part of learning. But a recent study in Frontiers in Psychology suggests that taking notes with pen and paper is still the best way to learn, especially for young children. The new research is based on a 2014 study that suggested people may type notes quickly, without thinking much about what they’re writing, but writing by hand is slower and makes them actively pay attention to and process the incoming information. This way of building existing knowledge can make it easier for students to stay interested and assimilate new ideas more easily. To understand specific brain-activity differences during the two note-taking methods, the researchers of the new study put 256 electrodes (电极) into a hairnet, which let the scientists record 36 students’ brain activity as they wrote or typed words. When students wrote by hand, the electrodes picked up widespread brain connectivity. Typing, however, resulted in little activity in brain areas. Vanderbilt University educational neuroscientist Sophia Vinci-Booher says: “The recent study stresses the clear tie between bodily movements and understanding ideas. As you’re writing a word, you’re making this understanding of something into an action, which then affects and strengthens the connection between an action and the words related to it.” Vinci-Booher notes that the new findings don’t mean technology is a disadvantage in the classroom. Digital tools can be more helpful for writing papers and offer more equal educational opportunities. However, more people are relying on digital tools to perform cognitive (认知的) tasks, such as taking photos instead of memorizing information. Yadurshana Sivashankar, a researcher at the University of Waterloo says, “If we’re not actively using these areas, then they are going to become worse over time.” 8. What does the underlined word “assimilate” mean in paragraph 2? A. Understand. B. Generate. C. Explore. D. Evaluate. 9. What did the researchers find about writing by hand? A. It protects specific brain areas. B. It leads to greater brain activity. C. It sharpens students’ typing skill. D. It damages the brain’s electrodes. 10. What would Sophia probably advise students to do? A. Memorize words by writing. B. Avoid digital tools in classroom. C. Use a new way to take notes. D. Make better use of technology. 11. What does Sivashankar imply in the last paragraph? A. Overreliance on technology harms cognitive ability. B. Taking photos helps develop children’s memory. C. Digital tools should be banned completely. D. Technology provides equal chances for all. D Lucy Hughes, a 24-year-old English inventor, has used skin and scales (鳞) from fish to create a new kind of plastic that will break down in about six weeks. Her invention won this year’s James Dyson Award. Ms. Hughes was very aware of how wasteful many products are. Plastic items (物品), for example, are often made from new plastic, used once for a short time, and then thrown away. She decided to challenge herself to make something out of waste instead. Fishing is a big business in England, and the University of Sussex where Ms. Hughes studied wasn’t far from the coast. She spent some time studying the fishing business, and the things that were thrown away. She was amazed by the amount of waste from fish that gets thrown away. After some tests, Ms. Hughes decided that the fish skin and scales seemed like the most likely parts for her product. But then she needed something to bind (hold the material together) with. She found that red algae (红藻) was the best binder. Ms. Hughes called her finished product “MarinaTex”, which is clear and feels like plastic, but stronger than regular plastic of the same thickness. MarinaTex is also cheap to make since it’s made from fish waste. Ms. Hughes says that the waste from one Atlantic cod (a fish) could make 1,400 bags. The process of making MarinaTex also doesn’t use much energy. Most importantly, MarinaTex doesn’t take hundreds of years to break down. Ms. Hughes thinks that one of the best uses for MarinaTex will be in some kinds of food packaging where plastic is currently being used. Ms. Hughes is looking forward to moving ahead with her idea. She wants to try to make her recipe for making her plastic even better. She hopes the award money will help her with the process of getting MarinaTex into use as quickly as possible. 12. Why did Lucy Hughes decide to invent MarinaTex? A. To support the local fishing industry. B. To create useful products from waste. C. To gain a good reputation in her field. D. To compete for the James Dyson Award. 13. What is the most significant feature of MarinaTex? A. Its physical strength is greater. B. It is more convenient to use. C. It can break down in a short time. D. Its production cost is fairly low. 14. What does Ms. Hughes expect to do next? A. Sell her recipe to other companies. B. Design various food packaging bags. C. Start a local fishing business. D. Bring her product to practical use. 15. What can be the best title for the text? A. Young Inventor Turns Waste into Treasure B. Fish Waste: A Growing Threat to the Coast C. Lucy Hughes Won the James Dyson Award D. Red Algae: A Promising Binder for Materials 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Animals have always had to change in order to stay alive. 16 Today, however, the world is warming so fast that scientists have begun to worry. The number of species that disappear each year is now far higher than it used to be, and some of them vanish (消失) before we even know they exist. Recent studies show that some animals are slowly changing the shape of their bodies. Many of them use the hairless parts of their bodies to lose heat. 17 In the case of wood mice, their tails are getting longer; in the case of elephants, their ears are growing bigger. 18 They are turning paler as well. Smaller bodies lose heat more quickly, and light colors have the same effect. Pale animals, for example, stay cooler in the sun and are harder for their enemies to see. It seems that the warmer the world becomes, the more their bodies change. At first, these changes may sound like good news. 19 A bird with a bigger beak (鸟嘴), for example, may find it harder to pick up food. In other words, solving one problem can create another, and the animal may end up in a worse position than before. Scientists still cannot say how far animals can go on changing like this. 20 What they do know is that the changes are happening far too quickly for nature to keep up with, and that is what really worries them. A. Animals are also becoming smaller. B. Those that failed to change simply died out. C. In fact, such changes may bring new problems. D. Others, however, are simply moving to cooler places. E. Nor can they tell which species will adapt successfully. F. Their food, in short, is becoming harder and harder to find. G. The bigger these parts are, the faster the animals can cool down. 第二部分 语言运用(共三节,满分55分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 Every Sunday at six o’clock, my family sits down to dinner together. Personally, I mainly do this by watching English vlogs on YouTube. This method has brought me many benefits. By listening to real conversations, I have improved my listening skills and learned plenty of authentic expressions that textbooks don’t teach. I also often pause to imitate the speakers, which helps correct my pronunciation. What’s more, the vlogs cover topics like travel, food and campus life, so I pick up new words naturally instead of memorizing them mechanically. Therefore, I strongly recommend this method to my classmates. Choose topics that interest you, watch with subtitles when necessary, and practice speaking along. I believe you will make progress before long. 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
