Most of us are aware that we must protect the environment. But recently, some “green truths” have turned out only half true, or even completely false. Here are some common ones. Paper shopping bags are better than plastic ones. Plastic bags cause litter, bring dangers to wild animals and take long to break down. So people think paper bags are better. However, making a paper bag uses four times as much energy as making a plastic bag and three times the amount of water, besides producing more greenhouse gases. Actually, neither are environment-friendly. So, take a reusable bag with you when shopping. Running your car air conditioning burns more gas. Running your car air conditioning (A/C) will affect your gas mileage, costing you more money and producing more pollution. However, if you want to save gas by turning off the A/C and rolling down your windows, you have to drive at low speed. At high speed, the aerodynamic drag (空气阻力) caused by open windows will actually cost you more gas. It does help save some gas if you turn off your A/C a few minutes before arriving at your destination. It’s better to take a shower than a bath. It depends on your shower time and size of your bath. If you spend over eight minutes in a shower, you’ll use as much water as in a bath. Therefore, the key is to keep your shower time as short as possible. When you turn off a device, it stops using power. When we turn off a device like television, it goes into stand-by mode. However, devices in this mode still use power. To ensure your device is truly off, just remove the plug (插头). 1. What is the problem of paper shopping bags? A. They are a threat to wild animals. B. They cause litter. C. They are energy-consuming to produce. D. They can’t break down. 2. Which of the following does the author agree with? A. Bring a plastic bag when shopping. B. Have a quick shower. C. Drive at high speed with open windows. D. Keep your television in stand-by mode. 3. What’s the purpose of the text? A. To clear up some misunderstandings. B. To persuade people to live green. C. To inform people of some green products. D. To evidence some green truths. 【答案】1. C 2. B 3. A 【解析】 【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了一些人们普遍认为正确的“绿色真理”实际上是不完全正确的。 【1题详解】 细节理解题。根据“Paper shopping bags are better than plastic ones.”部分关键句“However, making a paper bag uses four times as much energy as making a plastic bag and three times the amount of water, besides producing more greenhouse gases.”(然而,除了产生更多的温室气体外,制作一个纸袋所消耗的能源是制作一个塑料袋的四倍,水的用量是制作塑料袋的三倍。)可知,制作一个纸袋所消耗的能源是制作一个塑料袋的四倍,水的用量是制作塑料袋的三倍,由此可知,纸质购物袋的问题是它们的生产需要消耗更多能源。故选C项。 【2题详解】 推理判断题。根据“It’s better to take a shower than a bath.”部分关键句“It depends on your shower time and size of your bath. If you spend over eight minutes in a shower, you’ll use as much water as in a bath. Therefore, the key is to keep your shower time as short as possible.”(这取决于你的淋浴时间和浴缸的大小。如果你花在淋浴上的时间超过八分钟,你会用掉和洗澡一样多的水。因此,关键是尽量缩短淋浴时间。)可知,作者认为洗澡和洗淋浴哪个好取决于你的淋浴时间和浴缸的大小,要想节约水,关键是尽量缩短淋浴时间,由此可知,作者同意快速淋浴,这样可以节约水。故选B项。 【3题详解】 推理判断题。根据文章内容和第一段关键句“But recently, some “green truths” have turned out only half true, or even completely false. Here are some common ones.”(但最近,一些“绿色环保真相”被证明只有一半是真的,甚至完全是假的。这里有一些常见的环保理念。”)可知,本文主要澄清了一些关于“绿色环保真相”的误解,例如“纸购物袋比塑料购物袋好”和“运行汽车空调会消耗更多的汽油”等,这些常见的“绿色环保真相”是不正确的,由此可知,本文的主要目的是澄清一些误解。故选A项。 B It’s a big change from homeless teen to Yale (耶鲁) medical school student, but perseverance paid off for Chelesa Fearce of Clayton County, Georgia. Fearce was a fourth grader when her mom was diagnosed (诊断) with Lymphoma (淋巴瘤).That began a hard time for the family. They had to move in and out of shelters, hotels and even the family car. “I know I have been made stronger. I was homeless. My family slept on the floor and we were lucky if we got more than one full meal a day. Getting a shower, food and clean clothes was an everyday struggle,” Fearce said in a speech she gave at her high school graduation ceremony. Fearce overcame her day-to-day struggles by focusing on a better day. “I just told myself to keep working, because the future will not be like this anymore. And that helped me get through,” she told WSBTV. Fearce was determined to be a good role model for her younger sister. She found inspiration in her late grandmother, struggling with deadly diseases, who gave Fearce emotional support. In her junior and senior year, Fearce took both high school and college courses, missing out on the free meals she depended on so she could get to her college classes. Despite having to use her cellphone to study after the shelter lights were turned off at night, she not only graduated as valedictorian (毕业生代表) of her 2013 class with a 4.5 grade average, but was also given a ride scholarship—including a meal plan to Spelman College in Atlanta. After graduation, she worked full time for two years at the National Institutes for Health in Bethesda, Maryland, doing research on drugs. Last fall, she entered Yale and set a course to earn both a PhD and medical degree. 4. What does the underlined word “perseverance” in paragraph 1 refer to? A. instant passion. B. continuous efforts. C. great patience. D. selfless ambitions. 5. How did Fearce feel facing the sufferings? A. Sad and disappointed. B. Stressed and defeated. C. Determined and confident. D. Joyous and contented. 6. What can we know about Fearce’s learning experience? A. Her grandma encouraged her to study medicine. B. Her high school offered her free meals and courses. C. She failed to study late due to frequent power cut. D. She gained remarkable high school achievement. 7. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. From Homeless to Yale B. Meet American’s Top Girl C. Disabled but not Defeated D. Chelesa Fearce: A Girl of Many Talents 【答案】4. B 5. C 6. D 7. A 【解析】 【分析】这是一篇记叙文。文章主要讲述了Chelesa Fearce通过坚持不懈的精神让自己由无家可归的青少年变成了耶鲁医学院的一名学生的励志故事。 【4题详解】 词义猜测题。根据第一段“It’s a big change from homeless teen to Yale (耶鲁) medical school student, but perseverance paid off for Chelesa Fearce of Clayton County, Georgia. (从无家可归的青少年到耶鲁医学院的学生是一个巨大的转变,但是___________让乔治亚州克莱顿县的Chelesa Fearce得到了回报)”和第三段中““I just told myself to keep working, because the future will not be like this anymore. And that helped me get through,” she told WSBTV. (“我只是告诉自己要继续工作,因为未来不会再这样了。这帮助我度过了难关。”她告诉WSBTV)”由身份发生的转变,可知这是Fearce坚持不懈努力的结果,因此猜测划线词perseverance意为“坚持不懈的努力”。故选B项。 【5题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段中“ Fearce overcame her day-to-day struggles by focusing on a better day. “I just told myself to keep working, because the future will not be like this anymore. And that helped me get through,” she told WSBTV. (Fearce通过关注美好的一天来克服日常的困难。“我只是告诉自己要继续工作,因为未来不会再这样了。这帮助我度过了难关。”她告诉WSBTV)”和第四段中“Fearce was determined to be a good role model for her younger sister. (Fearce决心要成为妹妹的好榜样)”可知,面对这些苦难,Fearce充满决心并且信心十足。故选C项。 【6题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段中“Despite having to use her cellphone to study after the shelter lights were turned off at night, she not only graduated as valedictorian (毕业生代表) of her 2013 class with a 4.5 grade average, but was also given a ride scholarship—including a meal plan to Spelman College in Atlanta. (尽管她不得不在晚上熄灯后用手机学习,但她不仅以平均4.5的成绩以2013届毕业生代表的身份毕业,还获得了一笔骑行奖学金——其中包括到亚特兰大斯佩尔曼学院的吃饭计划)”可知,Fearce在中学的成绩优异。故选D项。 【7题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第一段“It’s a big change from homeless teen to Yale (耶鲁) medical school student, but perseverance paid off for Chelesa Fearce of Clayton County, Georgia. (从无家可归的青少年到耶鲁医学院的学生是一个巨大的转变,但是坚持不懈的精神让乔治亚州克莱顿县的Chelesa Fearce得到了回报)”以及纵观全文,可知,本文主要讲述了Chelesa Fearce通过坚持不懈的精神让自己由无家可归的青少年变成了耶鲁医学院的一名学生,因此本文的最佳标题选项A“从无家可归者到耶鲁”符合题意。故选A项。 C The practice of students endlessly copying letters sentences from a blackboard is now a thing of the past. With the coming of new technologies like computers and smart phones, writing by hand has become something of nostalgic(怀旧的) skill. However, while today's educators are using more and more technology in their teaching, many believe basic handwriting skills are still necessary for students to be successful - both in school and in life. Virginia Berninger, professor of educational psychology at the University of Washington, says it's important to continue teaching handwriting and help children acquire the skill of writing by hand. Beminger and her colleagues conducted a study that looked at the ability of students to complete various writing tasks - both on a computer and by hand. The study, published in 2019, found that when writing with a pen and paper, participants wrote longer essays and more complete sentences and had a faster word production rate. In a more recent study, Beminger looked at what role spelling plays in a student's writing skills. ”Spelling makes some of the thinking parts of the brain active which helps us gain our vocabulary word meaning and concepts. It is allowing our written language to connect with ideas.” Beminger said. “Spelling helps students translate ideas into words in their mind first and then to translate those words in the mind into written symbols on paper or keyboard and screen,” the study said. Seeing the words in the “mind's eye” helps children not only to turn their ideas into words, says Bemninger, but also to find spelling mistakes when they write the words down and to correct them over time. “In our computer age, some people believe that we don't have to teach spelling because we have spell checks," she said. “But until a child has a functional spelling ability of about a fifth grade level, they won't have the knowledge to choose the correct spelling among the options given by the computer. " 8. What makes writing by hand a thing of the past? A. The absence of blackboard in classroom. B. The use of new technologies in teaching. C. The lack of practice in handwriting. D. The popularity of computers. 9. What can we learn from Berminger's study published in 2019? A. It focused on the difference between writing by hand and on a computer. B. It showed that students prefer to write with a pen and paper. C. It found that good essays are made up of long sentences. D. It discussed the importance of writing speed. 10. Which of the following best shows the role of spelling? A. Spelling improves one's memory of words. B. Spelling ability is closely connected to writing ability. C. Spelling benefits the translation from words into ideas. D. Spelling slows down finding exact words to express ideas. 11. What conclusion could be drawn from the passage? A. Computers can help people with their choice or words. B. Spell checks can take the place of selling teaching. C. Handwriting still has a place in today's classrooms. D. Functional spelling ability develops fast in the fifth grade. 【答案】8. B 9. A 10. B 11. C 【解析】 【分析】这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了一个关于手写的研究。研究表明尽管当下科技发达,但是基本的书写技能对于人的思考更有帮助,是学习生活中必不可少的一项内容。 【8题详解】 细节理解题。根据第一段第一句“The practice of students endlessly copying letters sentences from a blackboard is now a thing of the past.”(学生无休止地从黑板上抄写字母和句子的做法现在已经成为过去。)和第二句“With the coming of new technologies like computers and smart phones, writing by hand has become something of nostalgic skill.”(随着计算机和智能手机等新技术的到来,手写已经成为一种怀旧的技能。)可知,新技术在教学中的应用使手写成为过去。故选B。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段第一句“Beminger and her colleagues conducted a study that looked at the ability of students to complete various writing tasks-both on a computer and by hand”(Beminger和她的同事进行了一项研究,考察了学生在电脑和手写完成各种写作任务的能力)和第二句中的 “when writing with a pen and paper, participants wrote longer essays and more complete sentences and had a faster word production rate”(在用笔和纸写作时,参与者写的文章更长,句子更完整,生词速度更快)可知,Beminger于2019年发表的研究专注于手写和电脑书写之间的差异。故选A。 【10题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段第一句“Spelling helps students translate ideas into words in their mind first and then to translate those words in the mind into written symbols on paper or keyboard and screen”(拼写帮助学生首先将想法翻译成脑海中的单词,然后将脑海中的单词翻译成纸上、键盘上和屏幕上的书面符号)可知,拼写能力与写作能力密切相关。故选B。 【11题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第一段最后一句“However, while today's educators are using more and more technology in their teaching, many believe basic handwriting skills are still necessary for students to be successful-both in school and in life. ”(然而,当今天的教育工作者在教学中使用越来越多的技术时,许多人认为学生要想在学校和生活中取得成功,基本的书写技能仍然是必要的。)可知,文章主要是讲基本的书写技能在教学工作中仍然十分重要。故选C。 D Tomatoes are common in daily life. Cathie Martin, a British scientist, has been working on developing purple tomatoes for years. Though the color is unusual, now this special kind of tomatoes, which has gained approval from the US government, has very high levels of antioxidants(抗氧化剂). Antioxidants, also known as AOS, are found naturally in plants like blueberries and red cabbage. Scientists believe AOS may help prevent heart disease and help fight against diseases like diabetes. But tomatoes naturally only have a small amount of AOS in them. Martin wanted to see if she could create tomatoes with lots of AOS by changing the DNA of a tomato plant. A plant developed from specially created DNA is known as a GMO. After adding two genes(基因) from a plant called snapdragon, Martin soon found her plants were producing small purple tomatoes with lots of AOS. Martin and other scientists further tested the tomatoes on mice that were likely to get cancer. The mice that were fed the purple tomatoes lived about 30% longer than those fed normal tomatoes. Though that’s good news, experiments on mice don’t always predict what effects on humans will be like. We need to see more experiments about it. GMOs were first allowed in America in the late 1990s. But GMO products weren’t popular with customers. Many people were scared by the idea that the foods weren’t natural or safe. There’re still questions about the effects of GMO crops on the environment. However, scientists deny these claims. Even so, many people still have concerns about them. Because of these concerns, most GMO products created over the last 20 years have focused on helping farmers rather than attracting customers. Anyway, on September 7, 2022, the US approved the purple tomatoes, which is the first time it has approved a GMO plant designed to target human health. 12. What makes purple tomatoes really special? A. Their medical value. B. Their delicious flavor. C. Their proper size. D. Their pleasant color. 13. What’s the author’s attitude to the test on the mice? A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Concerned. D. Opposed. 14. What does the underlined word “so” in Paragraph 5 refer to? A. The environment affects GMO foods. B. The customers do not like GMO foods. C. GMO products are used to help farmers. D. Scientists think GMO products are safe. 15. What’s mainly talked about in the text? A. Different DNA can benefit plant growth. B. Tomatoes with changed DNA are approved. C. Scientists are changing DNA of crops. D. Human health depends on changed DNA. 【答案】12. A 13. B 14. D 15. B 【解析】 【导语】本文属于说明文。一种新的紫色番茄在美国获得批准种植和销售。科学家通过改变这种番茄的DNA,增加了它们的抗氧化剂,使这种番茄可以保存更久,并有助于人们的健康。 【12题详解】 细节理解题。根据第一段中“Though the color is unusual, now this special kind of tomatoes, which has gained approval from the US government, has very high levels of antioxidants(抗氧化剂).(虽然颜色不同寻常,但现在这种特殊的西红柿已经获得了美国政府的批准,它含有很高的抗氧化剂)”以及第二段中“Scientists believe AOS may help prevent heart disease and help fight against diseases like diabetes. (科学家认为,AOS可能有助于预防心脏病,并有助于对抗糖尿病等疾病。)”可知,紫色番茄中含有抗氧化剂,抗氧化剂能够有助于对抗糖尿病等疾病。故紫色番茄的特殊之处在于它的医用价值。故选A。 【13题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段中的“Though that’s good news, experiments on mice don’t always predict what effects on humans will be the same. We need to see more experiments about it.”(虽然这是个好消息,但在老鼠身上进行的实验并不总是能预测对人类的影响是一样的。我们需要看到更多关于它的实验。)可知,作者对此实验目前心存怀疑。故选B。 【14题详解】 词义猜测题。第四段提到“But GMO products weren’t popular with customers. Many people were scared by the idea that the foods weren’t natural or safe. There’re still questions about the effects of GMO crops on the environment. However, scientists deny these claims.(转基因产品并不受消费者欢迎,许多人被这些食物不天然或不安全的想法吓到了。 标题“Tomatoes with changed DNA are approved.(转基因西红柿批准上市)”符合文意,故选B。 第二节 (共5小题; 每小题2.5分, 满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。有两项为多余选项。 Being a teenager is hard. B It’s a big change from homeless teen to Yale (耶鲁) medical school student, but perseverance paid off for Chelesa Fearce of Clayton County, Georgia. Chelesa Fearce: A Girl of Many Talents C The practice of students endlessly copying letters sentences from a blackboard is now a thing of the past. D Tomatoes are common in daily life. C.
