Most of us are aware that we must protect the environment. But recently, some “green truths” have turned out only half true, or even completely false. Here are some common ones. Paper shopping bags are better than plastic ones. Plastic bags cause litter, bring dangers to wild animals and take long to break down. So people think paper bags are better. However, making a paper bag uses four times as much energy as making a plastic bag and three times the amount of water, besides producing more greenhouse gases. Actually, neither are environment-friendly. So, take a reusable bag with you when shopping. Running your car air conditioning burns more gas. Running your car air conditioning (A/C) will affect your gas mileage, costing you more money and producing more pollution. However, if you want to save gas by turning off the A/C and rolling down your windows, you have to drive at low speed. At high speed, the aerodynamic drag (空气阻力) caused by open windows will actually cost you more gas. It does help save some gas if you turn off your A/C a few minutes before arriving at your destination. It’s better to take a shower than a bath. It depends on your shower time and size of your bath. If you spend over eight minutes in a shower, you’ll use as much water as in a bath. Therefore, the key is to keep your shower time as short as possible. When you turn off a device, it stops using power. When we turn off a device like television, it goes into stand-by mode. However, devices in this mode still use power. To ensure your device is truly off, just remove the plug (插头). 1. What is the problem of paper shopping bags? A. They are a threat to wild animals. B. They cause litter. C. They are energy-consuming to produce. D. They can’t break down. 2. Which of the following does the author agree with? A. Bring a plastic bag when shopping. B. Have a quick shower. C. Drive at high speed with open windows. D. Keep your television in stand-by mode. 3. What’s the purpose of the text? A. To clear up some misunderstandings. B. To persuade people to live green. C. To inform people of some green products. D. To evidence some green truths. B It’s a big change from homeless teen to Yale (耶鲁) medical school student, but perseverance paid off for Chelesa Fearce of Clayton County, Georgia. Fearce was a fourth grader when her mom was diagnosed (诊断) with Lymphoma (淋巴瘤).That began a hard time for the family. They had to move in and out of shelters, hotels and even the family car. “I know I have been made stronger. I was homeless. My family slept on the floor and we were lucky if we got more than one full meal a day. Getting a shower, food and clean clothes was an everyday struggle,” Fearce said in a speech she gave at her high school graduation ceremony. Fearce overcame her day-to-day struggles by focusing on a better day. “I just told myself to keep working, because the future will not be like this anymore. And that helped me get through,” she told WSBTV. Fearce was determined to be a good role model for her younger sister. She found inspiration in her late grandmother, struggling with deadly diseases, who gave Fearce emotional support. In her junior and senior year, Fearce took both high school and college courses, missing out on the free meals she depended on so she could get to her college classes. Despite having to use her cellphone to study after the shelter lights were turned off at night, she not only graduated as valedictorian (毕业生代表) of her 2013 class with a 4.5 grade average, but was also given a ride scholarship—including a meal plan to Spelman College in Atlanta. After graduation, she worked full time for two years at the National Institutes for Health in Bethesda, Maryland, doing research on drugs. Last fall, she entered Yale and set a course to earn both a PhD and medical degree. 4. What does the underlined word “perseverance” in paragraph 1 refer to? A. instant passion. B. continuous efforts. C. great patience. D. selfless ambitions. 5. How did Fearce feel facing the sufferings? A. Sad and disappointed. B. Stressed and defeated. C. Determined and confident. D. Joyous and contented. 6. What can we know about Fearce’s learning experience? A. Her grandma encouraged her to study medicine. B. Her high school offered her free meals and courses. C. She failed to study late due to frequent power cut. D. She gained remarkable high school achievement. 7. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. From Homeless to Yale B. Meet American’s Top Girl C. Disabled but not Defeated D. Chelesa Fearce: A Girl of Many Talents C The practice of students endlessly copying letters sentences from a blackboard is now a thing of the past. With the coming of new technologies like computers and smart phones, writing by hand has become something of nostalgic(怀旧的) skill. However, while today's educators are using more and more technology in their teaching, many believe basic handwriting skills are still necessary for students to be successful - both in school and in life. Virginia Berninger, professor of educational psychology at the University of Washington, says it's important to continue teaching handwriting and help children acquire the skill of writing by hand. Beminger and her colleagues conducted a study that looked at the ability of students to complete various writing tasks - both on a computer and by hand. The study, published in 2019, found that when writing with a pen and paper, participants wrote longer essays and more complete sentences and had a faster word production rate. In a more recent study, Beminger looked at what role spelling plays in a student's writing skills. ”Spelling makes some of the thinking parts of the brain active which helps us gain our vocabulary word meaning and concepts. It is allowing our written language to connect with ideas.” Beminger said. “Spelling helps students translate ideas into words in their mind first and then to translate those words in the mind into written symbols on paper or keyboard and screen,” the study said. Seeing the words in the “mind's eye” helps children not only to turn their ideas into words, says Bemninger, but also to find spelling mistakes when they write the words down and to correct them over time. “In our computer age, some people believe that we don't have to teach spelling because we have spell checks," she said. “But until a child has a functional spelling ability of about a fifth grade level, they won't have the knowledge to choose the correct spelling among the options given by the computer. " 8. What makes writing by hand a thing of the past? A. The absence of blackboard in classroom. B. The use of new technologies in teaching. C. The lack of practice in handwriting. D. The popularity of computers. 9. What can we learn from Berminger's study published in 2019? A. It focused on the difference between writing by hand and on a computer. B. It showed that students prefer to write with a pen and paper. C. It found that good essays are made up of long sentences. D. It discussed the importance of writing speed. 10. Which of the following best shows the role of spelling? A. Spelling improves one's memory of words. B. Spelling ability is closely connected to writing ability. C. Spelling benefits the translation from words into ideas. D. Spelling slows down finding exact words to express ideas. 11. What conclusion could be drawn from the passage? A. Computers can help people with their choice or words. B. Spell checks can take the place of selling teaching. C. Handwriting still has a place in today's classrooms. D. Functional spelling ability develops fast in the fifth grade. D Tomatoes are common in daily life. Cathie Martin, a British scientist, has been working on developing purple tomatoes for years. Though the color is unusual, now this special kind of tomatoes, which has gained approval from the US government, has very high levels of antioxidants(抗氧化剂). Antioxidants, also known as AOS, are found naturally in plants like blueberries and red cabbage. Scientists believe AOS may help prevent heart disease and help fight against diseases like diabetes. But tomatoes naturally only have a small amount of AOS in them. Martin wanted to see if she could create tomatoes with lots of AOS by changing the DNA of a tomato plant. A plant developed from specially created DNA is known as a GMO. After adding two genes(基因) from a plant called snapdragon, Martin soon found her plants were producing small purple tomatoes with lots of AOS. Martin and other scientists further tested the tomatoes on mice that were likely to get cancer. The mice that were fed the purple tomatoes lived about 30% longer than those fed normal tomatoes. Though that’s good news, experiments on mice don’t always predict what effects on humans will be like. We need to see more experiments about it. GMOs were first allowed in America in the late 1990s. But GMO products weren’t popular with customers. Many people were scared by the idea that the foods weren’t natural or safe. There’re still questions about the effects of GMO crops on the environment. However, scientists deny these claims. Even so, many people still have concerns about them. Because of these concerns, most GMO products created over the last 20 years have focused on helping farmers rather than attracting customers. Anyway, on September 7, 2022, the US approved the purple tomatoes, which is the first time it has approved a GMO plant designed to target human health. 12. What makes purple tomatoes really special? A. Their medical value. B. Their delicious flavor. C. Their proper size. D. Their pleasant color. 13. What’s the author’s attitude to the test on the mice? A. Supportive. B. Doubtful. C. Concerned. D. Opposed. 14. What does the underlined word “so” in Paragraph 5 refer to? A. The environment affects GMO foods. B. The customers do not like GMO foods. C. GMO products are used to help farmers. D. Scientists think GMO products are safe. 15. What’s mainly talked about in the text? A. Different DNA can benefit plant growth. B. Tomatoes with changed DNA are approved. C. Scientists are changing DNA of crops. D. Human health depends on changed DNA. 第二节 (共5小题; 每小题2.5分, 满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。有两项为多余选项。 Being a teenager is hard. But it won’t work and will even make the matter worse. Here are a few instructive suggestions you may follow. First of all, if I were you, I would do my best to limit the time spent on short videos each day, so I could spend more time on other meaningful activities and hobbies. What’s more, another step would be finding your life purpose in reality, from enjoying face-to-face conversations with your family and friends to taking a walk in the sunshine. I do hope my advice will be of some help to you. Looking forward to your good news. Yours, Li Hua 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
