A letter to Edward, a columnist (专栏作家) Dear Mr. Expert,
I grew up in an unhappy home. My parents often argued and got into a big fight. I always thought that I’d get out as soon as possible. Now, at the age of 20, I have a good job and a nice house, and I really enjoy the independence (独立) I’ve got.
My problem is that several of my friends wish they had places like mine. Although they still live with their parents, they make my home as theirs. It started with some of them spending the weekends with me. But now they just show up (出现) any time they like. They bring friends over, talk on the phone and stay up late.
I enjoy having my friends here sometimes—it makes the place feel comfortable and warm—but this is my home, not a party house. So why can’t I ask my friends to respect my privacy (隐私)?
Joan
Edward’s reply to Joan:Dear Joan,
If your family didn’t care about your feelings when you were a child, you probably have trouble letting others know your feelings now.
And if you have your friends around you to rebuild a happy family atmosphere (气氛), you may fear that saying no will bring back the kind of conflict that you grew up with—or lose the nice atmosphere you now enjoy. You need to understand that in true friendship it’s OK to put your own needs and feelings first.
Be clear about the message you want to send. For example, “I really love your company (陪伴) but I also need some privacy. So please call before you come over.”
Edward
51.We can learn from the first letter that Joan ________.
A.lives with her parents B.lives away from her parents

A.Because she thinks her friends can bring warmth and happiness to her house.
B.Because her friends can tell her great jokes.
C.Because she likes having parties in her house.
D.Because her friends bring food and drinks to her.
53.According to Edward, why can’t Joan tell her friends her feelings?
A.Because she is afraid of hurting her friends. B.Because she does not understand a true friendship.
C.Because her family experience causes that. D.Because she does not put her needs first.
54.What does the underlined word “conflict” in the second letter mean?
A.Comfortable life. B.Strong fight. C.Good thing. D.Warm feeling.
55.The last paragraph of the second letter shows that Edward ________.
A.feels worried about Joan’s problem B.tells Joan to argue with her friends
C.gives Joan advice on how to refuse people D.is stressed about Joan’s problem
【答案】51.B 52.A 53.C 54.B 55.C

【详解】51.推理判断题。第一封信中Joan写道:“Now, at the age of 20, I have a good job and a nice house, and I really enjoy the independence I’ve got...Although they still live with their parents, they make my home as theirs.”,通过对比朋友“和父母住在一起”,以及她享受自己的“独立”,可以看出Joan没有和父母住在一起,而是自己独居。

55.推理判断题。第二封信的最后一段写道:“Be clear about the message you want to send. For example, ‘...So please call before you come over.’”,Edward给出了一个明确、礼貌的拒绝话术示例,说明他是在教Joan如何合理地向朋友表达拒绝并设立边界。

“Nothing is impossible; the word itself says ‘I’m possible.’” Audrey Hepburn, the famous British actress, once said this. However, doubts and fears often stop us from going on. How can we face them and succeed?
The runner Su Bingtian gives an excellent answer to this question. The young man began his sporting life in 2006. At that time, no one from Asia had ever run the 100 m race in less than 10 seconds. Su trained hard and quickly became one of the fastest runners in Asia. In 2011, he ran the race in 10.16 seconds.
However, Su wasn’t satisfied. To run in under 10 seconds, in 2014, he changed his starting leg. This was not an easy decision.
He had to start from zero. At first, he was slower than before. Also, he was 25 years old. At such an age, many runners choose to stop running. People doubted his decision. However, Su fought his fears and became a sporting hero.
In 2015, he clocked 9.99 seconds and made history. In 2021, he finished in 9.83 seconds at the Tokyo Olympics. He also became the first Chinese athlete to run in the Olympic 100 m final.

【答案】51.B 52.A 53.C 54.B 55.C
第一封信中Joan写道:“Now, at the age of 20, I have a good job and a nice house, and I really enjoy the independence I’ve got...Although they still live with their parents, they make my home as theirs.”,通过对比朋友“和父母住在一起”,以及她享受自己的“独立”,可以看出Joan没有和父母住在一起,而是自己独居。

53.细节理解题。第二封回信的第一段指出:“If your family didn’t care about your feelings when you were a child, you probably have trouble letting others know your feelings now.”,说明Edward认为Joan无法表达真实感受是由于她早年的家庭经历(家庭环境)造成的。
