Passage1(课内同源:在瓦哈卡过亡灵节)
Last autumn I spent two months in Oaxaca, a city in southern Mexico, as an exchange student. In late October my host family began to buy marigolds, candles and sugar skulls. “The Day of the Dead is coming,” said my host sister, Lucía, with a smile. I felt uneasy. In my culture, death is a subject people avoid; why were they smiling? / On the first evening, the family built an altar in the corner of the living room. They put photographs of grandparents on it, together with the dead person's favourite food: bread, fruit and a small glass of drink. Marigold petals were laid in a line from the door to the altar, because people believe that their scent and colour help the spirits find their way home. / On the second night, the whole street became a party. Families sat around the graves in the cemetery with candles, flowers and food, talking and laughing. Music
