A community program called "Shared Grandmas" was launched in Wuhou District, Chengdu. The project recruits (招收) retired people over 60 to help pick up children from school and help with their homework for families where both parents work. The program has grown to include about 40 “shared grandmas” serving in the community and has helped more than 400 families over the years. Many of the elderly said the activity has helped them rediscover a sense of social value and joy in life
For young parents in the city, balancing work and family life has always been a headache. Most of them leave home early in the morning and return late at night, making it almost impossible to pick up their children from school on time. The “Shared Grandmas” project offers a simple but effective solution. Grandma Liu, 65, a retired teacher, said, “I used to feel lonely at home after my husband passed away. Now I look forward to every afternoon when I can see the children’s smiling faces. They call me ‘Grandma ’ and that warms my heart.”
The local government provides basic training for the grandmas, including child safety and simple first aid skills. Each grandma is matched with two or three families nearby, and they are given a small monthly allowance to cover transportation costs. The program has been so well received that many other cities are now considering similar projects.
Of course, not everyone is fully supportive. Some parents worry about whether the grandmas can deal with unexpected situations. Others question whether the elderly can truly understand modern teaching methods. However, most families say the benefits far outweigh the risks. The grandmas not only offer practical help but also pass on traditional values and life wisdom to the younger generation. In a fast-paced society, this intergenerational connection is something that money cannot buy. The “Shared Grandmas” project proves that a small act of kindness can create warmth for the whole neighborhood.

When we hear the word “doubt”, we often think of uncertainty or lack of confidence. However, doubt is far from being a weakness. In fact, it is one of the most powerful tools for learning and discovery. Without doubt, we would simply accept everything we are told, never questioning, never exploring deeper. ①
Throughout history, major breakthroughs have been made because someone dared to doubt the popular dogma. For example, Copernicus doubted the long-held beliefs that the Earth was the center of the universe. His doubt led to a new understanding of our solar system. Also, Galileo doubted old theories (理论) about how things move. His doubt helped start modern physics. These great minds did not accept things blindly. Instead, they asked, “What if?” and “Why not?”
In today’s education system, however, doubt is often discouraged. Students are expected to memorize facts and formulas, and exams are designed to test how well they can repeat what they have been taught. Questions that challenge the textbook are sometimes seen as troublesome. This “one right answer” culture leaves little room for skepticism. ② As a result, many students lose their natural curiosity and become passive learners.
But how can we bring healthy doubt back into learning? Firstly, teachers should create a classroom environment where asking questions is valued as much as giving correct answers. Secondly, students themselves must realize that doubt is not a sign of ignorance, but a step toward deeper understanding. ③
Of course, doubt must be guided by reason and evidence. Blind doubt is as useless as blind acceptance. ④ The goal is not to doubt everything, but to think critically and seek truth.
31. The underlined word “dogma” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to .
A. a belief that people are unwilling to question
B. a scientific theory that can be proved by experiments
C. a personal opinion that changes easily over time
D. a historical event that is recorded in textbooks
32. The writer mentions Copernicus and Galileo in Paragraph 2 mainly to show that .
A. they are the greatest scientists in history
B. doubt can lead to major discoveries and progress
C. people should always accept popular beliefs
D. it is dangerous to challenge widely held beliefs
33. Where can the following sentence best be put?
“For instance, when a student questions a historical event described in the textbook, he or she should be encouraged to research different sources.”
A. ① B. ② C. ③ D. ④
34. According to the passage, what is one problem with today’s education system?
A. It offers too many chances for students to express creative ideas.
B. It often treats challenging questions as unwelcome or troublesome.
C. It encourages students to learn from their own mistakes actively.
D. It focuses mainly on group work instead of independent thinking.
35. What will the author most probably discuss in the next paragraph?
A. Ways to help students memorize more facts for their final exams.
B. More scientists who made discoveries by doubting accepted ideas.
C. Reasons why schools should continue to discourage questioning.
D. How to check facts and think logically when we doubt.

Martin Luther King was a leader of the Civil Rights Movement. He worked hard to make sure that all Americans had the same rights.
King was born on 15th January 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia. He loved to play with his friend. However, the friend stopped playing with him as they got older. King was deeply hurt. He couldn’t understand why the colour of his skin would make any difference.
For black people in the USA, life was challenging. There were separate areas for black and white people in parks, restaurants and restrooms. In some states, black children had to go to separate schools.
King kept organizing activities to fight against the unfair treatment. In 1963, he led a large march (抗议游行) in Washington, D.C. In front of the crowd, he gave his famous speech, I Have a Dream, which lasted for about 17 minutes. Here are some short extracts:
“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character.”
“I have a dream that one day … little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.”
King’s hard work finally paid off. Because of it, rules in the USA began to change. Black and white people were no longer separated in public places, and children of different races could go to the same schools.
King’s dream did not come true overnight, but his courage changed American history. Today, he is remembered as one of the greatest leaders in the world, and his famous speech continues to inspire people everywhere to fight for justice and equality.
