Every year, my swim team runs the Snack Shack at the pool to raise money for swim meets. “I just got word that the Snack Shack will be closed for repairs through August,” said Coach Abby. No Snack Shack meant no money for swim meets! Everyone fell silent.
“If we can't run the Snack Shack, maybe we can think of other ways to raise money,” Noah spoke up.
“My school always has a Fall Festival,” said Manny, “with lots of games and prizes.”
“A festival would be so fun!” I said. “We could have a Fun in the Sun Lemonade Stand.” “Maybe all the games could have a water theme.” “Yeah! We can put on a bake sale and make starfish cookies.” ... The brainstorming for a pool party started and ideas flooded in.
For the following weeks, we spent so much time getting everything ready that we were positive it would be a great success.
The day before our big event, I was making lemonade when I saw a dark cloud. “Uh-oh! That's not a rain cloud, is it?” I asked my mom. “Rain could ruin everything.” “You know what they say,” she answered. “Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.”
The next day, as soon as I arrived at the pool grounds, Mila and I set up our Fun in the Sun Lemonade Stand. Besides all the necessities, we also had a very large box hidden under the table.
The weather started out just fine. More people than we'd expected showed up. Unfortunately, a few mini clouds suddenly turned into big ones. And before we knew it, heavy rain poured down!
“I think it's about time to open our mystery box,” I said to Mila. Here's what we pulled out of our “better safe than sorry” box: two huge umbrellas to make a nice dry area, three urns full of yummy hot chocolate, and a new sign that said Fun in the Rain Hot Cocoa Stand.
The warm drinks were a big hit—they went perfectly with the cookies from the bake sale.
After a while, the rain let up, the sun popped back out, and Coach Abby gave us some good news. “Thanks, everybody! The pool party was such a success that we'll be able to swim our tails off at every swim meet this summer!”
26. Why did everyone fall silent at the beginning?
A. They were too angry to say anything.
B. They were worried about their swim meets.
C. They refused to run the Snack Shack any longer.
D. They failed to come up with any money-raising plans.
27. What did the team finally decide to hold to raise money?
A. A swim meet. B. A lemonade stand.
C. A pool party. D. A cookie contest.
28. Why did they prepare the mystery box?
A. To give more fun to the visitors.
B. To deal with possible bad situations.
C. To follow orders from the writer's mom.
D. To keep their fundraising money safe inside.
29. What did Coach Abby's news tell us?
A. The team raised enough money for their swim meets.
B. The Snack Shack would soon be open again for business.
C. Hot cocoa sales were more popular than the Snack Shack.
D. They would prepare more fundraising events this summer.
30. What made the success of the event?
①Strong leadership. ②Various ideas. ③Useful teamwork.
④Full preparation. ⑤Good luck.
A. ①③④ B. ①②⑤ C. ②③④ D. ③④⑤

Sichuan is known as the “Land of Plenty”. One reason is that the land has produced so much food for its people. However, in the Qin Dynasty, the area around Chengdu was flooded every spring. Flood water from the mountains flowed down the Minjiang River and covered the land. The emperor of Qin asked a water engineer named Li Bing to solve the problem.
A common solution to flooding is to build a wall across the river, called a dam. But back then, ships couldn't pass through the dams. The emperor needed the ships to send food to his army. So, Li Bing came up with another plan.
He first cut a channel through the mountain on the east side of the river. This channel would take some water away to the farmlands below.
Then, Li Bing built an island in the middle of the river near the channel. It was shaped like a fish's mouth. The island divided the water into two rivers: the inner river and the outer river. The inner river was narrower but deeper, so more water could flow into it in dry seasons to water farms. In rainy seasons, things were different, and the outer river helped protect the land from floods.
Li Bing's plan was later named the Dujiangyan water management system. It proved to be very effective. There were no more floods. The water from the channel allowed farmers to grow more food. It turned Sichuan into one of the most fertile areas in China. People were finally living a happy life on this beautiful land of plenty.
Centuries have gone by. But the system is still in use. Like Li Bing and his workers, hard-working Chinese people today are still improving the system. In recent years, they've added modern technology to it. Digital technology will be used to monitor and control the system in the near future. It will continue to benefit the land and its people.
31. What did the emperor want Li Bing to do?
A. To send food to the army by ship.
B. To cut a channel through the mountain.
C. To build a dam across the Minjiang River.
D. To solve the flooding problem around Chengdu.
32. Which of the following carries more water in rainy seasons?
A. The inner river B. The outer river C. The Fish's mouth D. The channel
33. What is the meaning of the underlined word “fertile”?
A. Attracting many visitors. B. Making it easy to travel around.
C. Having enough water every year. D. Producing large numbers of crops.
34. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. People use traditional methods to improve the old system.
B. Modern technology is used to make the system better today.
C. The system will be rebuilt with the help of digital technology.
D. The local people will make much money by visiting the system.
35. What is the best title of the passage?
A. The Land of Plenty. B. The Life of Li Bing.
C. The Wisdom Behind Dujiangyan. D. The Advantages of Dujiangyan.

第二节 简答题(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分;满分 10 分)
请阅读以下短文,并根据短文内容用一句话简要回答以下问题。
Have you ever thought about solving everyday problems with your own inventions? Some Chinese students did just that. They brought their creative works to display at the Silicon Valley International Invention Festival in California, USA.
Among the young inventors were three high school students from Guangdong Province. They developed a special coating for eggs. The idea came from their own daily life.
In Foshan, where they live, the weather is very hot in summer. Fresh eggs can go bad in less than a week at room temperature. But with their new coating, eggs can stay fresh for about 40 days without a fridge.
Their invention not only works well but also costs very little. It only costs about 0.05 yuan per egg, while traditional cold-chain preservation (冷链保鲜) costs 0.05 dollars per egg in the US. Besides, it requires less energy, since it doesn't need to use electricity.
The festival displayed about 500 inventions this year, and 61 of them came from China, 19 of which were made by students. Many of these Chinese inventions were simple but useful, coming from small problems in daily life.
The judges were impressed by both the inventions and the students' confidence. As for the students, the festival was also helpful. “It is really meaningful. It gives us a chance to test our ideas and improve our inventions,” one of the students said.
