Unit 4  Journey Across a Vast Land

Reading and Thinking: Seeing the True North

Step 1  Lead-in — Wuhan’s Own Loop Train  (6

T: Show a photo of the green loop train crossing the Yangtze Bridge. Say: "Did you know? In March 2026, Wuhan launched its own loop train. For just 6 yuan, you can ride around the city: it starts at Wuhan East, crosses the Yangtze twice, stops at Hankou and Wuchang. Along the way you see East Lake, Yellow Crane Tower, the Yangtze Bridge. Would you take it?" Let students shout out ideas. Then: "Two cousins in Canada page number 0

took a train across their whole country. You can ride a loop train around your city. What do you think train travel is really for?"

Step 2  Predict the Story  (4

T: Look at the title: "Seeing the True North." Hand out the worksheet. Say: "Tick the topics you think the article will talk about." Give 2 minutes. Ask a few students what they ticked and why. Don’t confirm or correct — tell them we’ll check after reading.

Step 3  The Big Picture  (4

T: "Skim the passage. Who are the main characters? Where are they going? How? What kind of text is this?" Give 3 minutes. Then go through answers quickly.

Step 4  The Route Map  [

T: "This is the heart of the story. The cousins travel from Vancouver across Canada to Toronto. Read carefully and fill in the chart: each place on the route, and what is special about it." Give 5 minutes to read and fill. Then walk through each row:

Row 1 — Vancouver: what kind of place? What do they see?" Then row 2 — the Rockies. Row 3 — Edmonton.

Then ask: "Look at how the writer moves from west to east. What words does he use to show the order? ‘The next day’, ‘later’, ‘eventually’ — these time markers tie the whole journey together."

Step 5  Discourse Markers  (5

T: "Now let’s look at the language. Match each discourse marker with its purpose." Give 2 minutes, then go through. Key: however = contrast; since = reason; in addition to = adding; in fact = emphasis.

Step 6  What Makes a Great Rail Journey?  (4

T: "The cousins took the train instead of flying. Why? Tick TWO reasons." Give 2 minutes, then ask two students to share.

Step 7  Wuhan’s Loop Train  [

T: "Group work, 4 students. The cousins saw a whole country by train. Wuhan has its own 6-yuan loop train that circles the city. Based on this idea, write a short pitch for this loop train as a travel experience — who would you recommend it to, and why?" Give 4 minutes for groups to discuss. Then ask two groups to share. If a group says "for tourists", push back: "WHAT would tourists see? East Lake? Yellow Crane Tower? The Yangtze Bridge? Be specific."

If students struggle, write on the board: pick audience → pick landmark → explain why it matters. Ask: "What did the writer do in the text? He picked a place and described what made it special. Do the same for Wuhan’s loop train." The point: it’s not just "it’s fun" — it’s specific, tied to real landmarks and real people.page number 1
