It challenges participants, both individually and in teams, to solve linguistic (语言学的) puzzles. To compete at the IOL, no special knowledge is required, only basic language concepts, logic (逻辑), patience, and creative thinking. Try this beginner sample to see if the IOL is right for you. A PuzzleThe names  of some  South American countries are written in Georgian (格鲁吉亚语) with their English translations:     Brazil     Peru     Uruguay Q: What is the English name of this country “”? The SolutionThe Georgian forms of “Peru” and “Uruguay” have the same number of letters as their English names, showing a direct letter match. The repeated U in “Uruguay” further confirms Georgian is written left-to-right. “Brazil” has fewer letters than the Georgian version, but thanks to the two other names, we already know: -R, -A, -G, -E. With these letters, the pattern can be translated as “A R G E _ _ _ _ A”, which is “Argentina”. Contest Rules ● Each individual contestant or team must choose a working language for their problems and solutions, a choice that cannot be changed less than two weeks before the Olympiad begins. ● The individual contest involves solving five problems in six hours, whereas the team contest features one problem with two hours less. ● Unless instructed, giving multiple answers will receive zero marks. Besides, a detailed explanation is required for each answer; failure to provide one will result in a lower score.Awards The team contest will award up to one gold, two silver, and three bronze medals. In the individual contest, the number of gold, silver, and bronze medals awarded shall be in the ratio 1:2:3, with the total number of medals being between one quarter and one third of the contestants. Click here to find out other awards. 21.(2.5分)Which is vital to solve the sample puzzle? A.Linguistic fluency. B.Mathematical skills. C.Geographic knowledge. D.Reasoning ability. 22.(2.5分)What is one difference between the rules for the individual and team contest? A.The duration of the competition. B.The deadline for language choice. C.The result of giving multiple answers. D.The requirement for answer explanations. 23.(2.5分)If there are 240 individual contestants, how many medals could be awarded in total? A.40. B.54. C.72. She joined a local gym and got herself a hard exercise schedule which sees her in the gym every day for two and a half hours. She said, “I was afraid of turning 70, but I don’t feel my age at all.” As her confidence in the gym improved, she hardly spent a day without going to the gym. “When I first started, I would come home feeling tired,” she said. “Every muscle ached, but as I progressed, my health levels improved and I got better. I would never have believed in 100 years that I would love the gym so much.” Joy said, “Exercising and staying healthy stops things from getting me down.” The granny has been longing for living since losing her husband in 2011, when he was just 58 — making Joy realise life is valuable. She said, “My husband died very young and very quickly. He became ill in February, was diagnosed (诊断) in March and died on April 22. No one could believe it. Everybody was shocked at his death. When he died, it made me think deeply of my life and I am quite a confident and strong person as a result.” Every day when she exercises, Joy meets up with a group of friends who help keep her young. She said, “I’ve made good friends. As soon as I walked into the gym, the receptionists, the trainers, the cleaners — everyone showed friendly humour. They all think I’m mad, but in a nice way. I’m the healthiest granny in the town. I’d advise other people in later life not to be scared by the gym. Give it a go, because it’s just great.” 24.(2.5分)What caused Joy to hardly feel her age? A.She worked out hard in a gym regularly. B.She met with a lot of humorous friends. C.She never felt tired from workouts. D.She was shocked at the loss of her husband. 25.(2.5分)What does Joy think of her workouts in the gym? A.It’s tiring. B.It’s addictive. C.It’s scary. D.It’s boring. 26.(2.5分)What benefit did Joy get from working out in the gym? A.It helped her face life bravely. B.It helped her live a regular life happily. C.It encouraged her to be kind and humorous. D.It made her never feel bored after 70. 27.(2.5分)What was Joy’s advice to those in retirement? A.Meeting young people to keep young. B.Playing kind jokes with cleaners. C.Having a try at the gym. D.Making as many friends as possible. 根据第一段“She joined a local gym and got herself a hard exercise schedule which sees her in the gym every day for two and a half hours. She said, “I was afraid of turning 70, but I don’t feel my age at all.”(她加入了当地一家健身房,为自己制订了严格的锻炼计划,每天要在健身房锻炼两个半小时。她说:“我之前很害怕70岁的到来,但我现在完全感觉不到自己的年纪。”)”可知,每天两个半小时的健身活动使Joy充满活力,原来害怕自己到70岁的她,现在完全感觉不到自己的年龄了。 25.推理判断题。根据第二段“As her confidence in the gym improved, she hardly spent a day without going to the gym.(随着她在健身房的信心不断提升,她几乎一天都离不开健身房了。)”和“I would never have believed in 100 years that I would love the gym so much.”(我之前无论如何都想不到,我会这么热爱健身房。) 根据第三段“Exercising and staying healthy stops things from getting me down.(锻炼和保持健康让我不会沮丧。)”和“When he died, it made me think deeply of my life and I am quite a confident and strong person as a result.(他去世后,让我对人生有了深刻的思考,结果我变成了一个自信又坚强的人)”可推知,健身帮助Joy在失去丈夫后走出低谷,变得自信坚强,勇敢面对生活。 27. 根据最后一段“I’d advise other people in later life not to be scared by the gym. Give it a go, because it’s just great.(我建议其他年纪大的人不要害怕健身房。去试一试就好,因为健身真的很棒。)”可知,Joy给退休老年人的建议就是去健身房尝试健身。 (本题10分)You only need to think of any marathon you’ve watched to assume that men tend to outperform women in sport. But an interesting recent research has triggered the discussion. It is highlighted that the male-female performance gap in ultra-endurance (极限耐力) competitions is as low as 4 percent, while it’s around 10 percent in traditional endurance sport. And the difference seems to reduce the longer the event becomes, to the point that women even outperform men when it comes to events like ultra-distance swimming. When it comes to the marathon, we know that finishing times are greatly influenced by VO2max (最大摄氧量). However, these factors have been shown to be less influential in ultra-endurance performance. What this means is that success in ultra-marathons must be determined by the interplay of other physiological characteristics. If we look at the physiology, men tend to have more type II muscle fibers, which are good for high power output sports such as sprinting (短跑). Women have more type I muscle fibers, which produce less force but are more resistant to exhaustion — ideal for ultra-endurance events. Besides, as distances increase and intensity subsequently decreases, we rely more on fat to provide energy to our working muscles. Research currently suggests that compared to males, endurance-trained females use more fat even at rest and so they have spare essential carbohydrate stores. This would mean they’re less likely to hit “the wall” in a race. Sports psychologists have also suggested that women are generally better at bearing pain, reframing feelings such as exhaustion and enjoying the process rather than worrying about the outcome, all of which might lead to a better performance. As persuasive as these theories are, it’s hard to properly draw a firm conclusion that women excel in ultra-endurance sports. Ultra-endurance events appeal to a very small and specialized part of the population rather than the mainstream and the small numbers of women participating make it challenging to draw conclusions, and it’s rare to find direct comparisons with men. Hopefully this will change over time. 28.(2.5分)What can we learn about the research from Paragraph 1? A.Men perform better than women in sports on the whole. B.Ultra-endurance sports are gaining popularity among women. C.Men are comparatively at a disadvantage in traditional endurance sport. D.The performance divide between men and women closes as distances grow. 29.(2.5分)Which of the following accounts for women’s better ultra-endurance performance? A.They have more type II muscle fibers. B.They are better at burning fat for energy. C.They are less dependent on carbohydrate. D.They care more about competition results. 30.(2.5分)What does the last paragraph focus on? A.The intention of the research. B.The influence of the research. C.The limitation of the research. D.The conclusion of the research. 31.(2.5分)What is the purpose of the passage? A.To make a comparison between males and females in sports. B.To clarify a fact that females are equally competent in sports. C.To explain why women make better ultra-endurance athletes. D.To advocate more women engaging in ultra-endurance sports. 根据第一段“And the difference seems to reduce the longer the event becomes, to the point that women even outperform men when it comes to events like ultra-distance swimming.(而且,这种情况似乎随着赛事时间的延长而逐渐减少,以至于在超长距离游泳等项目中,女性甚至超过了男性)”可知,比赛距离增加,男女运动差距逐渐缩小。 29. 根据第三段“Research currently suggests that compared to males, endurance-trained females use more fat even at rest and so they have spare essential carbohydrate stores.(目前的研究表明,与男性相比,耐力训练过的女性即使在静息状态下也消耗更多的脂肪,因此她们体内拥有额外的必需碳水化合物储备)”可知,女性更擅长分解脂肪供能,适配长距离耐力运动。 30. 根据最后一段“Ultra-endurance events appeal to a very small and specialized part of the population rather than the mainstream and the small numbers of women participating make it challenging to draw conclusions.(超长距离赛事吸引的是极少数特定人群,而非主流群体,而参与其中的女性人数较少,因此很难得出结论)”可知,本段点明该项研究存在局限性。 31. (本题10分)If you’ve ever played on a sports team or been to gym class, you probably know the practice. First, you do some warm-ups. Then you stretch (拉伸). Exercises and activities follow. At the end of the exercise, you do more stretches. For years, coaches and gym teachers have believed that stretching helps athletes perform better and suffer fewer injuries. From the health club to the football field, everywhere you look, people stretch. Now research suggests that stretching may not do your body as much good as people thought. After reviewing more than 350 scientific studies, researchers from the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that stretching may not cut the chance of injury. “There are not enough facts to show that stretching is useful,” says Stephen Thacker, a director at the CDC in Atlanta. “Certain athletes stretch all the time, but they’re the ones who are more likely to get hurt.” Thacker points to professional baseball players as an example. They all do stretches before a game. Yet baseball players have one of the highest rates of injury in any sport. To understand why stretching may be a bad idea, it helps to know how muscles (肌肉) work. It all starts with orders from the brain. Special cells called neurons (神经元) carry electrical messages from the brain through the nervous system to the muscles you want to activate. As soon as the messages get to their parts, the muscles react. When you stretch, you lengthen muscle fibers (纤维). It then takes longer for messages from the brain to travel through them. Stretching before you exercise is very risky, experts say. Instead of stretching before an activity, they recommend warming up by starting slowly to get blood and oxygen flowing to your muscles. 32.(2.5分)What’s the common opinion of coaches and PE teachers on stretching? A.It should be avoided in matches. B.It improves performance. C.It may increase the risk of injuries. D.It is only useful for athletes. 33.(2.5分)What does Thacker want to explain by mentioning professional baseball players? A.The necessity of doing warm-ups. B.The value of the group game. C.The purpose of the CDC’s study. D.The downside of stretching. 34.(2.5分)What does the underlined word “them” refer to in Paragraph 4? A.Messages. B.Neurons. C.Muscle fibers. D.Special cells. 35.(2.5分)What do experts recommend for warming up before exercise? A.Starting with slow movements. B.Stretching as much as possible. C.Focusing on your thoughts. D.Following the coach’s order. 根据第二段“For years, coaches and gym teachers have believed that stretching helps athletes perform better and suffer fewer injuries.(多年来,教练和体育老师一直认为拉伸有助于运动员表现得更好并减少受伤。)” 根据第三段““There are not enough facts to show that stretching is useful,” says Stephen Thacker, a director at the CDC in Atlanta. “Certain athletes stretch all the time, but they’re the ones who are more likely to get hurt.”(亚特兰大CDC主管斯蒂芬・撒克说:“没有足够证据证明拉伸有用。有些运动员一直坚持拉伸,但恰恰是他们更容易受伤。”)”推知,举例是为了说明拉伸不仅无益,反而可能增加受伤风险,即解释拉伸的缺点。 34.词句猜测题。根据第四段“When you stretch, you lengthen muscle fibers. It then takes longer for messages from the brain to travel through them.(当你拉伸时,你拉长了肌肉纤维。随后,大脑发出的信息需要更长的时间才能穿过它们。)”可知,them指代前一句中被拉长的“muscle fibers(肌肉纤维)”。 35.细节理解题。根据最后一段“Instead of stretching before an activity, they recommend warming up by starting slowly to get blood and oxygen flowing to your muscles.(他们建议在活动前通过缓慢开始来热身,让血液和氧气流向肌肉,而不是进行拉伸。)” (本题12.5分)Life frequently places us in contexts where people strive to outperform one another. 36(2.5分) No one likes to lose, whether in a board game or a sports match. But why does losing hurt so much and how can it be handled better? Picture this. You’ve just lost the final match of the football season. Your stomach drops, your tears well up and anger or disappointment takes over. 37(2.5分) Balbir Bansi, a school counsellor in UK, says these feelings are natural. “When a lot of time and effort needs to be put in, it can be painful to lose, because it can feel like your hard work has gone to waste,” Balbir says. Other emotions such as embarrassment may also arise, especially if friends and family have come to support you. These same emotions can surface even in casual contests between friends, like table tennis or video games. To an outsider, losing might seem inconsequential, but Balbir explains that the desire to do your best can lead to disappointment, whatever the circumstances of the defeat. 38(2.5分) Alternatively, you may fear that losing shows you are less skilled than your opponent. This might make you doubt your abilities. However, losing does have an upside. Many top athletes who have faced repeated defeats have mentioned that moving on is crucial, as losses make them stronger. 39(2.5分) Balbir agrees, “we can learn as much from losing as from winning.” When it comes to losing, the key is to use defeat to identify weaknesses and areas for improvement without becoming unnecessarily self-critical and negative. For many, losing with good grace and offering sincere congratulations to your opponent is a sign of wisdom and maturity. 40(2.5分) A.You have to face defeat many times. B.It can remove the uncomfortable feelings. C.These are winning qualities in all walks of life. D.With competition comes the possibility of losing. E.It also feels unbearable to congratulate your opponents. F.You may rely on winning as a way to boost your confidence. G.Learning from those mistakes helps them improve and work harder. 根据前文“Life frequently places us in contexts where people strive to outperform one another.(生活常常把我们置于人们互相比拼、一较高下的环境中。)”以及后文“No one likes to lose, whether in a board game or a sports match.(无论是桌游还是体育比赛,没有人喜欢失败。)”可知,前文讲生活充满竞争,后文讲没人愿意输掉比赛,D选项“With competition comes the possibility of losing.(有竞争就伴随着失利的可能。)” 37.根据前文“You’ve just lost the final match of the football season. Your stomach drops, your tears well up and anger or disappointment takes over.(你输掉了足球赛季的最后一场比赛,心情低落、眼眶泛红,满心愤怒与失落。)”以及后文“Balbir Bansi, a school counsellor in UK, says these feelings are natural.(英国校园心理咨询师巴尔比尔·班西表示,这些情绪都是正常的。)”可知,空格处继续罗列失败后产生的负面情绪,E选项“It also feels unbearable to congratulate your opponents.(主动向对手表示祝贺也会让人难以忍受。)” 38.根据后文“Alternatively, you may fear that losing shows you are less skilled than your opponent. This might make you doubt your abilities.(此外,你会害怕失败显得自己不如对手,进而开始怀疑自身能力。)”可知,后文讲述害怕失败的一种心理原因,空格处应铺垫另一种心理缘由,F选项“You may rely on winning as a way to boost your confidence.(你或许会把获胜当作提升自信的方式。)” 39.根据前文“Many top athletes who have faced repeated defeats have mentioned that moving on is crucial, as losses make them stronger.(许多顶尖运动员历经多次失利都表示,释怀向前很重要,失败能让人变得更强大。)”以及后文“we can learn as much from losing as from winning.(我们从失败中学到的东西和成功一样多。)”可知,空格处说明运动员从失败中吸取教训、实现成长,G选项“Learning from those mistakes helps them improve and work harder.(从这些失误中总结经验,能帮助他们进步、更加努力。)” 40.根据前文“For many, losing with good grace and offering sincere congratulations to your opponent is a sign of wisdom and maturity.(对很多人而言,坦然接受失败、真诚祝福对手,是智慧与成熟的体现。)”可知,空格处对这种豁达大度的品质进行总结评价,C选项“These are winning qualities in all walks of life.(这些素养在各行各业都是可贵的闪光点。)” 三、完形填空 (本题15分)Reporters worldwide spoke highly of a thrilling World Cup match between defending champion Argentina and Cape Verde (佛得角). Few people had 41 that the tiny island nation would stage such an amazing surprise in the knockout (淘汰赛) stage. Before the match, data showed Argentina held an overwhelming 42 , with an 89 percent winning probability. Most fans firmly believed Argentina would easily defeat the 43 team and advance smoothly. Making the school varsity team was supposed to be the crowning achievement of my sophomore year——validation of every early morning practice and every blister on my fingers. Yet, there I sat. With only three minutes left on the clock and a commanding twenty-point lead, Coach Thompson still hadn’t gestured toward the bench. I glanced down at my brand-new jersey, Number 12, still crisp and dry,my sneakers pristine. The roar of the home crowd felt like a distant ocean, separated from me by a thick pane of glass. On the court, the starters moved like a well——oiled machine. Jake sank another three-pointer, igniting the stands. While my teammates celebrated, I replayed the ghosts of last Tuesday’s practice in my head: the clang of a missed layup, the embarrassing thud of a pass that hit the floor. I knew I wasn’t the sharpshooter Jake was, but I could pass. I could defend. I had spent months perfecting my footwork in the post. But Coach trusted the players who had built this lead, and I was invisible. When the final buzzer echoed like a gunshot, I forced the corners of my mouth into a smile and clapped along with the team. No one noticed that my palms hadn’t touched the ball once. The locker room was a sauna of euphoria. Teammates sprayed water bottles like champagne, their laughter raw and hysterical. I quietly stuffed my damp towel and gear into my bag, trying to become part of the wall, to slip out unnoticed. Just then, Coach Thompson walked over, holding the game ball-scuffed and slick with sweat. He handed it to Jake, who had dropped thirty points. Jake lifted the ball high, flexing for the cameras, his grin wide. I turned away, biting my lip so hard I tasted copper. “Hey,wait up,” a voice called through the chaos. It was Jake. He tossed the ball toward me. “Take this to the equipment room for me,will you?” I looked at the ball in my hands, feeling the sweat and grit from the game still clinging to its surface. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ On Monday, Coach announced the next opponent. We would face Lincoln High, a much stronger team. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Possible Version 1 (Word count: 178): I looked at the ball in my hands, feeling the sweat and grit from the game still clinging to its surface. My fingers traced the worn leather, and for a moment, I felt a strange intimacy with it——this ball had witnessed Jake’s glory, but it had also witnessed my loneliness. Instead of heading to the equipment room, I walked back to the empty court. Under the dim lights, I dribbled, pivoted, and shot. Again and again. Each swish of the net was a quiet promise to myself. I stayed until my jersey was soaked and my arms ached. That night, I decided I would no longer wait for permission——I would make myself impossible to ignore. On Monday,Coach announced the next opponent. We would face Lincoln High,a much stronger team. During practice, I didn’t hang back. I called for the ball, set hard screens, and dove for loose balls. Coach’s eyes lingered on me a second longer than usual. When he finally pulled me aside and said, “Number 12, you’re in the rotation for Friday,” my heart pounded harder than any buzzer——beater. I knew this was my one shot. Not for fame, but to prove that the boy who carried the ball to the equipment room could also carry the team when it mattered.Possible Version 2(Word count: 205): I looked at the ball in my hands, feeling the sweat and grit from the game still clinging to its surface. For a split second, bitterness rose in my throat——was this all I was good for? Carrying someone else’s trophy? But then I noticed something: the ball was worn evenly, not just from Jake’s shots, but from everyone’s passes, rebounds, and steals. It didn’t belong to one star; it belonged to the whole team. I walked to the equipment room slowly, cradling it like a relic. On the way, I passed Coach, who gave me a small nod. Maybe he saw more than I thought. That night, I texted Jake: “Great game. I’ll get your ball next time, too. ” He replied with a laughing emoji and a “You will.” On Monday, Coach announced the next opponent. We would face Lincoln High, a much stronger team. The gym fell silent. Coach drew up a defensive scheme that required relentless rotation——no room for ego, only trust. He looked at me and said, “Number 12, you’re our anchor on defense.” My chest swelled, not with pride, but with purpose. When Friday came, I didn’t score a single point. But I took two charges, forced three turnovers, and made the pass that set up Jake’s game-winner. As the crowd roared, Jake threw me the ball and yelled, “Your turn to keep it.” This time, I held it not as an errand boy, but as a teammate. 词汇激活 行为类 ①轻轻抱着它:cradle it/hold it gently/carry it with care ②发送信息:text /send a message to/shoot a message to 情绪类 ①痛苦:bitterness/misery/agony ②信赖:trust/reliance 【点睛】【高分句型1】On the way, I passed Coach, who gave me a small nod.(运用了who引导的非限制性定语从句) 【高分句型2】As the crowd roared, Jake threw me the ball and yelled, “Your turn to keep it.”(运用了as引导的时间状语从句) 2 / 2 2 / 2 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 高中英语单元测试——Unit 2 Sports Culture(较易版02) 学校:___________姓名:___________班级:___________考号:___________ 一、听力选择题 1.(本题1.5分)What is the probable relationship between the speakers? (本题10分)You only need to think of any marathon you’ve watched to assume that men tend to outperform women in sport. (本题12.5分)Life frequently places us in contexts where people strive to outperform one another. 三、完形填空 (本题15分)Reporters worldwide spoke highly of a thrilling World Cup match between defending champion Argentina and Cape Verde (佛得角). ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 2 / 2 2 / 2 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $听力考试正式开始。Come back next week and will work on those arms and legs and don't forget to do those exercises at home.
