Self-help books are everywhere, but only a few offer ideas that can genuinely improve how we think, feel and live. Below are four widely recommended books that serve such purposes.
The Courage to Be Disliked
The Courage to Be Disliked by Ichiro Kishimi is written as a dialogue between a philosopher and a young man. The book challenges the belief that we must satisfy everyone around us. It teaches readers to separate their own responsibilities from others’ expectations. Once the fear of being disliked is removed, people often act more honestly and feel lighter and more confident as a result.
Rapport
Written by psychologists Emily and Laurence Alison, Rapport focuses on how people connect through conversation. Based on their work in tense and even dangerous situations, the authors show how cooperation depends on understanding different communication styles. By learning when to listen, when to lead, and when to adjust tone, readers can reduce conflicts and enhance collaboration with coworkers.
Secure
In Secure, psychologist Amir Levine explains why people behave so differently in their interactions with others. Levine provides practical tools to help readers become more emotionally stable. The book also encourages readers to notice their reactions and communication needs clearly. By understanding themselves better, readers can build calmer and more stable connections with friends and family members.
Four Thousand Weeks
In this book, Oliver Burkeman suggests focusing on what truly matters now rather than trying to do everything perfectly. The book encourages readers to accept limits, stop endless planning, and enjoy small, meaningful moments. By letting go of pressure and unrealistic goals, readers may discover a calmer and more satisfying way to live.
What might the readers gain from Rapport?
A.Careful life-planning. B.Better self-assessment.
C.Improved teamwork. D.Strengthened family bonds.
Whose book may attract a reader longing for a stable friendship?
A.Amir Levine’s. B.Ichiro Kishimi’s.
C.Oliver Burkeman’s. D.Emily and Laurence Alison’s.
What do the four books have in common?
A.They present advice mainly through dialogues.
B.They encourage reflection on thinking patterns.
C.They promise a quick fix with simple techniques.
D.They’re written by experts based on their experiences.
(本题10分)The sunlight was settling over the golden cornfields of Ethiopia when Susan Greeff headed for her camp after a day of shooting. She hadn’t walked far when a voice called out behind her. “Photo, photo, photo.” A young Surma boy, about seven or eight years old, was following closely. Susan let out a tired sigh. After four straight days of taking pictures for curious villagers, she had little energy left to press the button one more time.
She hoped the boy would find someone else, but he kept following. When their eyes met, his hopeful “Photo?” finally stopped her. Partly out of a sudden creative impulse (冲动), an idea for a photograph flashed through her mind. She knelt in the cornfield and showed the boy where to stand and how to pose. But as Susan prepared to take the shot, the boy’s energy suddenly shifted. The eagerness gave way to shyness, and then to visible fear. No matter how gently she instructed him, she simply couldn’t get the photograph she had imagined. Frustrated, she finally gave up.
The boy stood there looking small and awkward. He had wanted his picture taken, and now he had gone camera-shy at the last moment. Wanting to cheer him up, Susan clapped her hands and said with a warm smile, “That was great. You were great.” Other children from the village gathered around, also cheering and clapping. The boy’s face immediately broke into a bright smile. Susan raised her camera and recorded that moment in time.
To Susan’s surprise, the photograph was far better than the carefully composed shot she had planned. She knew the image had come from a deeper place — true human connection. In that moment by the cornfield, Susan realized when we let go of our own fixed expectations and truly see the person in front of us, we create something far more meaningful than we had originally imagined.
Why did Susan refuse to take the boy’s photo at first?
A.She was too tired to shoot photos. B.She disliked the boy’s loud voice.
C.She was unsatisfied with her camera. D.She longed to return to her camp.
Why did the boy turn camera-shy?
A.He felt nervous under instruction.
B.He feared Susan’s angry look.
C.He lost interest in taking the shot.
D.He got sick of the required pose.
What made the final photo better?
A.It used advanced techniques.
B.It had better camera settings.
C.It followed the planned pose.
D.It froze a moment of true joy.
What message does the story convey?
A.Praising children can remove shyness.
B.Sincere connection leads to creation.
C.Careful planning is the key to success.
D.Great determination always pays off.
The Whispers of Rock: A Geologist’s Personal and Cultural Thoughts
Reviewed by Josh Trapani
In the book The Whispers of Rock, geologist Anjana Khatwa writes about the strong ties between native cultures and the Earth’s rocks and landscapes. She believes that today’s society needs to find this connection again. The book includes different native stories linked to important places, from Japan’s mountains to New Zealand’s volcano-shaped lands and the Black Hills in North America.
Although the book covers many cultures, its argument is not really new. Sometimes Khatwa’s writing sounds like she is teaching a moral lesson. It creates oversimplified comparison. Native peoples live harmoniously with nature while others only make use of nature. She worries that scientists may not accept views from non-Western cultures, but there is no need to worry.
The best parts of the book are Khatwa’s personal stories. She bravely shares both happy and sad moments from her life. Studying rocks helped her see things clearly and find comfort. Her memory of visiting Kenya is especially touching. At that place, she first became interested in geology as a young girl.
Khatwa sees human life stories in the changes of rocks. Some rocks go through great heat and pressure to become new and stronger, while other rocks are torn from their original places and left in foreign lands. However, reading this book made me think about my own different interest in geology. I am interested in history rather than human problems. I think the Earth’s history is very long, but human problems are very small. Khatwa’s method feels like teaching at times. But her central idea is very important. It is this: if we connect with the Earth and stay open to various ideas, we can better protect our world and ourselves.
How does Josh introduce the book’s content in paragraph one?
A.By listing Khatwa’s academic achievements.
B.By quoting positive reviews from readers.
C.By stating its theme and giving examples.
D.By comparing it with other geology books.
What is a shortcoming of the book according to the passage?
A.Ignoring Western scientific views. B.Covering cultures of few places.
C.Failing to include personal stories. D.Lacking creativity in argument.
How does Josh’s view of geology differ from Khatwa’s?
A.He thinks rocks ignore human life. B.He cares more about Earth’s history.
C.He wants geology to save the planet. D.He feels geology is protecting nature.
What’s Josh’s attitude toward the book?
A.Objective. B.Critical. C.Unclear. D.Approving.
(本题10分)Genres are often viewed as structural frameworks for literary texts, onto which elements like imagery, character, plot, and setting are layered. These frameworks are passed down through generations, evolving over time.
Among all genres, the novel received the most critical attention in the twentieth century, often praised as the “king of genres” due to its reflection on the real world. Yet, in the nineteenth century, it was primarily seen as a form of middle-class entertainment. It was not until the twentieth century that the novel was lifted to the status of an art form, joining in the same league as painting or classical music. Later on, many scholars successively studied the characteristics of novels from the 18th and 19th centuries.
Recently, in a book of Edwin Frank, Stranger Than Fiction, he raises an appealing question: Is there such a thing as a “twentieth-century novel”? Is it meaningful to distinguish the twentieth-century novel from the nineteenth-century one—or even from the novel of the twenty-first century? Frank thinks so. In his book, he illustrates how the twentieth-century novel matures into a distinct literary genre. The twentieth century was a period of violent change; therefore, violent change is what the twentieth-century novel reflects—not, or not only, in its subject matter but in its form. Frank suggests that, modern as the twentieth-century novel is, it shows the cultural relevance to development of societies.
However, that relevance seems to have decreased. Today, the novel no longer holds a central place in the cultural conversation. People’s daily question has shifted from “What are you reading?” to “What are you streaming?” Television series have emerged as the dominant form of middle-class entertainment in the twenty-first century.
Has influential television reshaped the role of the novel? Many nineteenth-century novels gained vitality in the twentieth century through film adaptations. Henry James, for example, would likely be pleased to know that The Portrait of a Lady has been adapted into a BBC miniseries, a feature film, and even a television version—each reaching a far larger audience than the original print edition could ever have hoped for.
Why did the novel gain recognition in the twentieth century?
A.It mirrored real life.
B.It displayed attractive characters.
C.It was penned by the middle-class.
D.It was presented in entertaining styles.
Which aspect of the twentieth-century novel does Stranger Than Fiction talk about?
A.Its rises and falls. B.Its expansion and effect.
C.Its significance and limitation. D.Its evolution and uniqueness.
What is the author’s attitude towards the current role of the novel in paragraph 4?
A.Optimistic. B.Indifferent. C.Content. D.Concerned.
What does the example of The Portrait of a Lady indicate?
A.Novels lose their artistic appeal.
B.Adaptations reduce novelsˈ flavor.
C.Media breathe new life into novels.
D.TV shows change the role of novels.
(本题12.5分)Living on your own can give you an incredible sense of freedom, but many people still struggle. They claim: When you only need to answer to yourself in the house, it can be harder to have a regular rhythm in your day.
Predictable routines help to reduce stress and worry. They take away some of the exhaustion you might feel when faced with a long day ahead, and they reduce the day-to-day decision-making. Structured days help to maintain your mood and support mental strength. 37(2.5分) For example, if you schedule in your exercise, you’re more likely to do it. If you plan regular mealtimes, it means you don’t forget to eat, which helps to keep your blood sugar levels stable.
38(2.5分) If you make it very inflexible, it can become a source of tension and anxiety. There should be space for unexpected events — you might get a last-minute social invitation from a friend, the weather might be awful, or you might be feeling extremely tired. You should be allowed to accommodate these changes.
Sometimes you’ll have a day when you feel sad and lost. 39(2.5分) However, if you can, get up and start following some of your routine — even if you only do the basics. It can help you to feel more purposeful.
Building a routine is an evolving process, and as you settle more into your solo (独居的) life, your routine will adapt and change. Celebrate being consistent, not perfect. 40(2.5分) Overpacking your days will make them exhausting and stressful, which is why it’s just as important to add in periods of rest and relaxation.
A.An extremely fixed routine has its advantages.
B.When building a routine, think about balance.
C.But having a healthy routine can bring stability.
D.However, it’s important not to be too strict with it.
E.Without a routine, you may easily lose your identity.
F.It’s appealing to stay in bed and not face the day at all.
G.There are also physical health benefits of having a routine.

Elliot Edwards had always been a curious boy, full of questions about life. But as he grew older, the voices around him, “Questions don’t help you earn a living”, slowly silenced his wonder. The only shadow heavier than his unspoken curiosity was the distance between him and his younger brother Thomas.
Years ago, in the heat of a quarrel, Elliot’s arm swept across the table, accidentally knocking over Thomas’ treasured music box onto the floor. It was a gift from their grandfather to Thomas on his birthday. The delicate steel comb (音梳) was bent and useless. Tiny gears (齿轮) spilled out across the floor. When Elliot clumsily picked it up and opened it, the box only produced broken notes before it fell silent forever. After the fight, Thomas had left, and the brothers had not spoken since.
For over ten years, Elliot worked as a library worker, sweeping floors among silent books, his own spirit gathering dust like the shelves he cared for. One rainy Wednesday, he found a well-worn wool scarf folded neatly in the corner while cleaning shelves. It belonged to Mrs. Davies, a retired teacher who visited weekly. When she hurried back, eyes wet, she said softly, “This was my late husband’s last gift. We’d fought, and he gave it to apologize before he passed away. Don’t wait till it’s too late to make amends (弥补), dear.” Elliot watched her hold the scarf tight. For the first time, he thought of the music box at home, and wondered if he could fix his bond with Thomas.
Then, behind an old heater, he found it: a wooden music box, silent but still glowing slightly. On the back of the box, carved into the wood were their grandfather’s words: “The sweetest melody plays when hearts sing together.” Memories rushed back — the happy time they spent together, Thomas’s hurt face, the weight of regret he had carried all these years.
Rain hit the window. Elliot held the music box tight. Deep down, he knew he needed to find Thomas — he had to fix their bond before it was too late.

The morning was lovely. I could hear birds singing outside. Inside, the room was bathed in sunshine. Before rushing to the kitchen, I stretched a little and enjoyed the peace. There were many things waiting — a water bottle to fill, a lunch box to pack. Soon, my son Tom got up, sleepy-eyed but full of spirit. Then he got ready for school while I moved around the kitchen.
After Tom left for school, the house fell into a soft quietness again. It was a typical day, I believed. When Tom returned that afternoon, his energy was still full. He dropped his bag and rushed toward me. “Mom! Do you know what happened today?” he said breathlessly.
“How would I know, Tom?” I smiled, gently moving his hair aside. “Today, I roasted (严厉批评) my classmate Linda! And the whole class burst into laughter and clapped for me!” he said, pride spreading across his face.
I could see his joy. Being a mother, I always want to understand what lies beneath his victories and struggles. “Tell me everything,” I said, setting aside my cup of tea.
“Linda was mean,” he began. “She made fun of my friend and we all thought she was so rude. I couldn’t let her get away with that. So, I jumped in and answered rudeness with rudeness. And the class went wild! Everyone started cheering!” he said proudly.
I looked at him, smiling faintly but a little unsettled. “Are you happy with what you said?” I asked. He looked puzzled. “Yes, Mom! She started it!” “Don’t you think you might have hurt her?” I said softly. “Girls in our class aren’t soft and they’re louder than us!” He continued to explain.
“But if someone spoke to me like that, even if they started it, I would feel hurt,” I replied gently. There was a long pause. He looked down. “Really, Mom?” he asked softly. “Yes, I would feel hurt too.” I said. He didn’t say more that evening. The pride in his eyes disappeared and was replaced by thoughtful silence.

What does Tome plan to do with her savings?
A.Buy more animals for her family.
B.Travel abroad to enrich her knowledge.
C.Encourage more women to start businesses.
【答案】18.A 19.B 20.C
W: For years, Tome, a Maasai woman, spent her days creating jewelry. But despite her skill and dedication, her works brought almost no income. Living in a faraway area meant there were few buyers for her creations. She used to give her jewelry away for free, as she enjoyed making it and didn’t want her skills to go to waste.
Everything changed when Convoy of Hope’s Women’s Empowerment program reached her community. The program gave her an opportunity to go out to work. And she moved to a tourist area near the Maasai Mara National Park, where visitors from around the world come to experience Kenya’s culture and wildlife. In just a few months, Tome went from earning nothing to making a profit each month. Today, she has increased her profits by 400% by selling her works to tourists from other countries. With the profits, she’s purchased four goats and four sheep, giving her family additional sources of food and income. She has also trained nine other women, sharing not only her skills but also her business knowledge.
Tome has also learned the importance of planning her money. Before joining the program, she had never had extra money to save. Now, she sets aside part of her earnings each month. She dreams of using her savings to grow her business and help even more women start their own.

What made the final photo better?
A.It used advanced techniques.
B.It had better camera settings.
C.It followed the planned pose.

根据文章第二段“She knelt in the cornfield and showed the boy where to stand and how to pose. But as Susan prepared to take the shot, the boy’s energy suddenly shifted. The eagerness gave way to shyness, and then to visible fear. No matter how gently she instructed him, she simply couldn’t get the photograph she had imagined. (她跪在玉米田里,向男孩展示该站在哪里、如何摆姿势。但就在苏珊准备拍摄时,男孩的状态突然变了,之前的热切变成了腼腆,之后又变成了明显的恐惧。无论她的指导多么温柔,都拍不出她预想中的照片。)”可推知,男孩是在接受拍摄指导的过程中逐渐感到紧张,进而变得怯场。
26.细节理解题。根据文章第三段“Wanting to cheer him up, Susan clapped her hands and said with a warm smile, ‘That was great. (本题10分)The Whispers of Rock: A Geologist’s Personal and Cultural Thoughts
【答案】28.C 29.D 30.B 31.A
文章主要介绍了Josh Trapani对《The Whispers of Rock》一书的书评。
根据第一段中“In the book The Whispers of Rock, geologist Anjana Khatwa writes about the strong ties between native cultures and the Earth’s rocks and landscapes. (在《The Whispers of Rock》一书中,地质学家安贾娜·卡特瓦(Anjana Khatwa)描述了本土文化与地球岩石和景观之间的紧密联系)”以及“The book includes different native stories linked to important places, from Japan’s mountains to New Zealand’s volcano-shaped lands and the Black Hills in North America. (这本书包含了与重要地点相关的不同本土故事,从日本的山脉到新西兰的火山地貌,再到北美的黑山)”可知,Josh通过陈述这本书的主题,即本土文化与地球岩石和景观之间的紧密联系,并举例日本的山脉、新西兰的火山地貌和北美的黑山等重要地点相关的本土故事来介绍书的内容。故选C项。
29.细节理解题。根据第二段中“Although the book covers many cultures, its argument is not really new. (虽然这本书涵盖了许多文化,但它的论点并不新鲜)”可知,这本书的缺点是论点并不新鲜,缺乏创新性。故选D项。

【答案】32.A 33.D 34.D 35.C
根据第二段中“Among all genres, the novel received the most critical attention in the twentieth century, often praised as the “king of genres” due to its reflection on the real world.(在所有体裁中,小说在20世纪受到了最重要的关注,因其对现实世界的反映而被誉为“体裁之王”)”可知,小说在二十世纪获得了认可是因为它反映了与现实的联系。故选A。
根据第三段“In his book, he illustrates how the twentieth-century novel matures into a distinct literary genre. The twentieth century was a period of violent change; therefore, violent change is what the twentieth-century novel reflects — not, or not only, in its subject matter but in its form. Frank suggests that, modern as the twentieth-century novel is, it shows the cultural relevance to development of societies.(在他的书中,他阐述了20世纪的小说是如何发展成熟,成为一种独特的文学体裁的。
根据第四段“However, that relevance seems to have decreased. Today, the novel no longer holds a central place in the cultural conversation. People’s daily question has shifted from “What are you reading?” to “What are you streaming?” Television series have emerged as the dominant form of middle-class entertainment in the twenty-first century.(然而,这种相关性似乎已经减弱。今天,小说在文化对话中不再占据中心位置。人们的日常问题已经从“你在看什么?”到“你在看什么电视剧?”电视连续剧已成为21世纪中产阶级娱乐的主要形式)”可知,作者对于小说当下所扮演的角色的态度是担心的,故选D。
35.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Many nineteenth-century novels gained vitality in the twentieth century through film adaptations. Henry James, for example, would likely be pleased to know that The Portrait of a Lady has been adapted into a BBC miniseries, a feature film, and even a television version—each reaching a far larger audience than the original print edition could ever have hoped for.(许多19世纪的小说在20世纪通过电影改编而焕发了活力。例如,Henry James可能会很高兴地知道,The Portrait of a Lady已经被改编成BBC的迷你剧、故事片,甚至是电视版本——每一部都吸引了比原版印刷版所希望的更多的观众。)”可推知,The Portrait of a Lady的例子表明媒体为小说注入了生命。故选C。

56.marks 57.completely 58.exciting 59.on 60.election 61.until 62.getting 63.to obey 64.a 65.It

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The next day, he bought a new comb and started to fix the box. Without hesitation, he cleared his table, laying out the tiny gears and the spare parts he had kept safely for ten years. He adjusted the delicate steel comb again and again with tweezers, and patiently pieced each tiny gear into the right place. For the whole day, he devoted himself entirely to the old music box, regardless of his trembling fingers and sore muscles. As dusk fell, he gently opened the music box. The familiar tune echoed in the room, warm and healing, sweeping away the heavy gloom that had lingered in Elliot’s heart for more than a decade.
Elliot stood before Thomas’ house, with the music box in his hands. Nervous as he was, he gathered his courage and knocked at the door. No sooner had Thomas opened the door than he froze for a second, surprise flashing across his eyes. Taking a deep breath, Elliot lifted the music box and handed over the box gently, his voice shaky with sincerity, “I’m really sorry.” Beaming a warm smile, Thomas hugged his brother tightly for the first time in many years, hot tears in both their eyes. The two hearts, buried under long silence and misunderstanding, finally began to heal with the lingering melody, just as their grandfather’s words had said.

I dropped what I was doing and hugged him tightly.

The next day when he returned, he came running into the kitchen. His face was mixed with nervousness and relief. He told me that he had found Linda at break time and apologized for speaking rudely to her. He admitted that responding to rudeness with rudeness was wrong, even though Linda had teased his friend at first. To his surprise, Linda said she was sorry too for her bad behaviour. They even talked for a short while and cleared up their misunderstanding. A faint smile appeared on his face as he shared the whole story.
I dropped what I was doing and hugged him tightly. I told him how proud I was of his courage to say sorry. I explained that true bravery was not winning cheers by arguing back, but choosing kindness even when others treated us badly. Though it was hard to admit mistakes, it could heal hurt feelings. Tom nodded seriously. He realized that laughter from classmates was not real victory. What really mattered was treating others with respect, no matter what had happened.
