The Coming-of-Age Ceremony
Held on our school playground last Monday, the grand coming-of-age ceremony for Senior Three students turned out to be an unforgettable experience for all of us.
The whole ceremony was filled with warmth and solemnity.Accompanied by our teachers and parents,we walked slowly through the Longmen one by one.The Longmen symbolizes a brand-new stage of life, and we received sincere blessings as we passed through it.Later, all of us raised our right hands and made an oath together solemnly. We promised to behave properly, cherish what we own and bravely take on the responsibilities that come with adulthood.
This meaningful activity is a vital milestone in our life.It dawns on me that adulthood brings not only more freedom but also heavier responsibilities.I will keep the oath in mind and spare no effort to strive for my dream, trying my best to live up to everyone’s expectations.
第二节 读后续写 (满分 25 分)
67 My dad explained he had chosen a campsite that had no phone service. I realized my phone would be useless until we returned home. I would be trapped in the forest for four days with no way to connect myself with the outside world. I went from an unhappy state to anger. However, that couldn't make my phone receive the signal. I went to bed angrily that first night. But when I awoke in the morning, something had changed.
The next morning, without checking my phone as usual, I fixed my mind on nature around myself. My dad and I hiked through the forest, enjoying nature. We went fishing and swimming. I listened to stories of Dad's life. When the vacation came to an end, I realized I hadn't thought of my phone once. It dawned on me that I needed to value the moments with nature and the important persons in life. With this lesson carried to this day, I regularly pack up the tent and drive until my phone shows words: "No service."

The Magical World of The Little Prince Brought to Life
About the exhibition
French visual artist Arnaud Nazare-Aga has worked with Antoine de Saint-Exupéry Youth Foundation, and together they have designed a unique touring art exhibition of sculptures inspired by the original watercolor illustrations of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's book, The Little Prince, as well as photos, manuscripts(手稿) and drawings.
The exhibition will be presented for the very first time in Auckland from 1st June to 25th June to celebrate the anniversary of the publication of The Little Prince.
Entitled "The Little Prince in the Dark", the exhibition attempts to bring Saint-Exupéry's illustrations to life in a different way. The artist has created 13 all-white sculptures with relief(浮雕). They are displayed in the dark to be discovered by the senses of touch and hearing. All the magic, dreams and poetry of Saint-Exupéry's beloved book will thus be revealed in a new way never imagined before.

My mother always told me, "You should explore your own country before stepping out into the world." However, it seems like a tough mission to travel all across its expansive surfaces. But luckily for me, Via Rail Canada offered youths between the ages of 18 and 25 the chance to ride the train across Canada for the month of July. The ticket was a bargain at $150. My best friends Trevor, Joel and Jeremy and I immediately jumped at the opportunity and secured four tickets on the great Canadian railroad.
For a group of 20-year-olds, this was like the first flight of young birds from the nest. When we approached the train station in the morning, our 22-day adventure from Sudbury to Vancouver was to begin. Eyes baggy from lack of sleep, we jumped on board as if it were the train to Hogwarts in Harry Potter. Although the thought of three full days on those tracks covering close to 3,000 kilometres crushed our spirits a little, what happened next caught us by surprise.
The three days on board turned into a summer camp on rails. At night, we would climb up the glass-domed train car, which gave us a scenic view of the starry night sky, untouched by the harmful light pollution. Before we knew it, the warm sun rays beating down on our faces woke us up for another day on the rails. To my surprise, a sea of golden grain fields dominated the landscape we were in the Canadian Prairies.
Another day slipped away and we set up for another night in the dome (圆顶状物). And this time we were greeted by night sky painted by a fantastic thunderstorm. Lightning was striking at an incredible rate. The spectacular and memorable light show left everyone in the glass bubble in complete disbelief.
Arriving in the Rocky Mountains was one of the most surreal experiences of my life. Before the train adventure, if I could have skipped the travel and arrived at the destination, I would have. That is no longer true. Iˈve learned that the journey can be more enjoyable than the destination.

A. The destination is what matters.

A primary school in north Devon with a brand-new mud play area hit the headlines last week.
"We felt that our children needed something better at playtime," said the head teacher, Amy Frost. "The playground before was pristine (整洁的) but there was nothing for them to do. As schools, we have been fearful of allowing our children to take risks. Children donˈt learn what risk is and how to manage risk." To change this, the school designed different zones for climbing and muddy play.
Frost said there had been a few comments from people who found it "difficult to adjust", but parents were greatly supportive. "My son is caked in mud but heˈs having fun!" one parent commented. Another said, "Weˈd rather do extra laundry and see them thrive (茁壮成长)."
Children today have less access to unstructured outdoor play than past generations did. Helen Dodd, a professor of child psychology at the University of Exeter, said, "The decline in children getting muddy is part of our risk aversion (风险规避). We want to keep children safe, so we stop children from doing the things that children naturally do. If we want to give children space to connect with nature, they need to do that in an unrestricted way, and a consequence is that they might get muddy."
Thereˈs also research about the benefits of being in contact with mud, just in terms of the biology of whatˈs in the mud, and how it affects our immune system. Also, in terms of sensory things. Lots of children now have sensory difficulties. They donˈt like the feel of different things, which might come from being kept overly clean.
Children had never before seen so much and experienced so little, said Follett. "All of their experiences are secondary, through screens shut in bedrooms. What theyˈre lacking is real primary experience, touching, feeling, practicing. You know that feeling of squeezing a handful of mud, and it leaking out through your fingers?"
28.Why was a mud play area built in the primary school?
A. To hit the headlines of the newspaper.
B. To satisfy the parentsˈ needs.
C. To teach children to learn about risks.
D. To upgrade school facilities.
29.What prevents childrenˈs outdoor play?
A. Overly concern. B. School regulation.
C. Behavior code. D. Generation gap.
30.What do we know about mud play?
A. It may enhance immune system. B. It leads to sensory difficulties.
C. It has become more popular. D. It can cause severe consequences.
31.Whatˈs the passage mainly about?
A. How parents become so positive.
B. Why children experience so less.
C. How connection with nature could be built.
D. Why kids should be allowed to play in mud.

Keeping kids busy with various activities provides them with a well-rounded social life.Growing up,I knew many teenagers who were actively involved in both sports and student government. Those teenagers all ended up going to college and graduating. This may not be the situation in all cases, but from what I have noticed, teens who stay active and do good in the community are typically the ones who deal with anxiety and depression(抑郁) better.
A 2015 study published by professor of biology Theodore Garland concluded,“If kids exercise regularly through the school years, they may be more likely to exercise as adults, which could have far-reaching positive effects on human health and well-being.Our results suggest that any positive effects of early-life exercise on adult exercise tendencies will require reinforcement(强化) and maintenance if they are to be long-lasting.” This study found that along with physical activity, having a spirit of adventure would also help improve childrenˈs physical and mental health.
Some parents disagree. They feel that pushing a child to stay active and involved causes unnecessary stress and can have the opposite effect, making him/her hate being involved or being active.Parents also fear their children will experience failure, which they believe could lead to low self-confidence.
The key to helping the youth stay motivated is not pressuring them too hard.People who have strict parents typically rebel(反抗) or feel they will never be good enough.Keep in mind that encouraging the youth to be competitive isnˈt the best thing. Some of the unhappiest people I have met are competitive.Positive reinforcement is the best way to keep people motivated.
An active and involved youth will show personal qualities that will become useful in the future. Some of these include leadership, teamwork,a healthy lifestyle, educational benefits, respect and trust, which will lead to success in the future.
32.According to the author, what do we know about active teens?
A. They get much better education.
B. They concentrate more on self-improvement.
C. They do well in both sports and management.
D. They deal with some mental problems better than others.
33.What did the study in 2015 imply?
A. The positive effect of early-life exercise is not necessarily lasting.
B. Physical activity helps children become more confident.
C. Early-life exercise has positive effects on relationships.
D. School life experience has a long-lasting influence.
34.Why are some parents against teensˈ being active?
A. They believe it may take a lot of time.
B. They think it is unnecessary to push kids.
C. They are worried about the opposite effect.
D. They are afraid it makes their children feel depressed.
35.What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The importance of trusting the youth.
B. The key to keeping the youth motivated.
C. The possible problem faced by the youth.
D. The reasons for helping the youth stay positive.

Never say these words to your child
Youˈre perfect. If your children have low self-esteem(自尊), you might think itˈs a great idea to praise them highly when they do something well. Not so, says Brad Bushman, professor of communication and psychology at Ohio State. Instead, it might make them anxious about having to meet high standards. (36)
Youˈre so special. (37) But telling children they are better or more deserving of success than other kids can turn them into a little narcissist(自恋的人), according to research done at Ohio State University.
Youˈll always be my little girl/boy. Itˈs natural for parents to want to protect their kids from harm. (38) Otherwise, researchers of University of Granada say they may develop “Peter Pan syndrome”: the desire to stay in adolescence forever, avoiding lifeˈs responsibilities and challenges.
(39) Not only is shame unhealthy for people of all ages, but also it can make kids who have high self-esteem act aggressively, according to researchers at the University of Michigan. Narcissistic kids feel more threatened when theyˈre shamed, leading them to respond defensively.
Everythingˈs OK—Iˈm not upset. Parents are often advised not to let their children see when theyˈre upset. But a new study from the University of Toronto says hiding feelings can impede(阻碍)a high quality parent-child bond. (40) Researchers say gently admitting the feelings in ways a child can understand may be the better approach.
A.You always make me disappointed.
B.You should be ashamed of yourself.
C.It can also make the parent feel worse.
D.That can lead to avoiding new challenges.
E.Two-way communication with your kids is important.
F.Naturally many parents think their children are special.
G.But itˈs important to help them develop the skills needed to grow into independent adults.

67.阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。词数150左右,续写部分分为两段,每段开头已为你写好。
A couple of months before I started high school, my parents gave me the greatest gift any teenage boy would ask for: a cellphone. I lived on that phone all summer. I always texted my friends, even at night. And I paid no attention to the people and things around myself. Being connected to the Internet was more important than being present.
So, you can imagine my displeasure when I learned what my dad had planned for our family vacation that year. It was not the Disneyland trip or beach vacation that I had been hoping for. "This year," my dad said, "we'll be doing something special, something I used to do with my dad when I was a kid. We're going camping in the forest!"
His excitement was met with a disappointed sigh, which was my communication style at that age. But he had made the decision and would not change his mind. I comforted myself by telling myself that it was still a vacation. I remained uninfluenced when they were busy preparing for the vacation.
My mind was on my phone, the texts flying back and forth. I focused on the screen in my hands so much that the first time I looked up was when we drove across a bridge on the trip to our campsite.
I looked out of the window and saw a fast-moving river. The air blowing into the car from the open windows was hot and smelt of trees. But that didn't matter to me. The reason why I had looked up was for something far more serious and annoying. My phone no longer had service. The signal was weak. During the last hour of the drive, there was no signal at all.
