Everything changed when Convoy of Hope’s Women’s Empowerment program reached her community. The program gave her an opportunity to go out to work. And she moved to a tourist area near the Maasai Mara National Park, where visitors from around the world come to experience Kenya’s culture and wildlife. In just a few months, Tome went from earning nothing to making a profit each month. Today, she has increased her profits by 400% by selling her works to tourists from other countries. With the profits, she’s purchased four goats and four sheep, giving her family additional sources of food and income. She has also trained nine other women, sharing not only her skills but also her business knowledge.
Tome has also learned the importance of planning her money. Before joining the program, she had never had extra money to save. Now, she sets aside part of her earnings each month. She dreams of using her savings to grow her business and help even more women start their own.

(本题10分)In the morning, when mist still hangs over the old stone streets of the coastal town of Seabrook, Thaddeus Flint is already at work in his workshop. For decades, the elderly clockmaker, known for his complicated handmade timepieces, had worked alone. That changed last spring when Leo, a quiet transfer student with no friends in his new school, wandered into the shop by accident, drawn by the steady ticking from within.
Seeing Leo interested in clocks, Thaddeus, a man of few words, simply handed the boy a dusty small gear and a clean cloth. To his surprise, Leo returned the next day, having polished it to a shine. Recognizing his uncommon attentiveness, Thaddeus offered him a simple task: sorting screws. Week by week, Thaddeus’ tasks grew more complex. Leo learned to adjust tiny pendulums (钟摆) and carefully position delicate gears.
The real turning point came with the specially ordered Clock Project for the town hall — a piece that had defeated Thaddeus for months due to a faulty bell sound mechanism. Leo, after observing for weeks, suggested a different design for the spring tension setup using a method from an old physics book. Doubtful but impressed, Thaddeus let him try. To the old man’s astonishment, it worked. The deep, clear-sounding bell that now marks each hour in Seabrook is partly Leo’s creation. News of their successful work together spread. Many locals bring their hard-to-fix antique shelf clock for repair.
Leo, once an outsider, gradually became a familiar face. Thaddeus often speaks proudly of Leo’s “steady hands and a steadier mind”. Leo plans to study engineering after graduation. “A clock isn’t just gears and time,” Thaddeus told him. “It’s a promise that every piece has its place. All we need is to observe and study calmly and steadily.” In a world that often feels rushed, their unlikely partnership reminds the town that some of the best connections are built slowly, one careful tick at a time.

(本题10分)Virtue, by definition, is the moral excellence of a person. Morally excellent people have a character made up of virtues valued as good. They are honest, respectful, courageous, forgiving and kind, for example. They do the right thing, and don’t bend to impulses, urges or desires, but act according to values and principles. Some might say good qualities are inborn. Actually, virtues need to be cultivated (培养). With the habit of being virtuous, we can take control of our lives and move them in the direction of greater happiness and fulfillment.
Virtues are universal and recognized by all cultures as basic qualities of well-being. However, practicing virtues is not easy. So often we know that it takes perseverance to reach our goals, and we still never get there. We know if we forgive, we’ll be less angry. We know it takes courage to accomplish great things. So why then, if we know what to do, are we still stuck?
Because we have not yet consciously applied a virtue to a given situation so as to change its outcome such as in these examples: kindness towards someone who is having a bad day can make him or her smile and build a close relationship; trust in a relationship creates valuable, meaningful relationships; gratitude in a job loss can shift our focus from feeling low to how we can have a new, more fulfilling career; service to others can change lives, better neighborhoods and create stronger nations.
We know we are becoming more virtuous people, not only because of the results above but also because of the way other people respond to us. Our friends, families, co-workers, and neighbors will trust and rely on us. They will come to us for guidance and help. They will want to be around us because we inspire them to be better people. Practicing virtues allows us to develop our potential, and live a more purposeful, better life.
What can we know about virtuous people from Paragraph 1?
A.They are born with virtues. B.They never make a mistake.
C.They have a habit of doing good. D.They act on the principle of profit.
What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A.Satisfying career. B.Practicing virtues.
C.Trust in a relationship. D.Basic qualities of well-being.
What can we infer from the examples given in Paragraph 3?
A.Virtues only work in personal relationships.
B.Being grateful always leads to a better job quickly.
C.Kindness is the most useful virtue in dealing with bad moods.
D.Applying virtues properly can change a situation for the better.
What is the author’s purpose in the last paragraph?
A.To encourage readers to be more virtuous. B.To encourage readers to live a purposeful life.
C.To encourage readers to offer others guidance. D.To encourage readers to develop others’ potential.

So why then, if we know what to do, are we still stuck?(美德是普世的,被所有文化公认为幸福的基本品质。
根据第三段中“Because we have not yet consciously applied a virtue to a given situation so as to change its outcome such as in these examples: kindness towards someone who is having a bad day can make him or her smile and build a close relationship; trust in a relationship creates valuable, meaningful relationships; gratitude in a job loss can shift our focus from feeling low to how we can have a new, more fulfilling career; service to others can change lives, better neighborhoods and create stronger nations. (我们知道我们正在成为更有美德的人,不仅因为上述结果,还因为他人对我们的回应方式。我们的朋友、家人、同事和邻居会信任并依赖我们。他们会来向我们寻求指导和帮助。他们会想要和我们在一起,因为我们激励他们成为更好的人)”可知,作者通过描述变得有美德后他人会如何积极回应,旨在鼓励读者成为更有美德的人。
(本题12.5分)Many people view setbacks as roadblocks that stop their progress, but in reality, they can be powerful fuel for growth. If you often feel stuck after a setback and struggle to move forward, it’s time to examine your mindset and habits.
You avoid reflecting on the lessons.
Setbacks carry hidden lessons, but a lot of people rush to move on without pausing to learn. 37(2.5分) Nonetheless, do you take time to analyze what went wrong and what you could do differently? If not, you’re likely to repeat the same mistakes and miss the chance to grow stronger.

It’s natural to feel uncertain after a failure, especially when others question your abilities. For example, you spent weeks preparing for a presentation, but it didn’t go as planned. You’ve told yourself before that you’re capable of growth, but after this failure, you start to believe you’re not good enough. 38(2.5分) Your confidence fades, but you don’t fight against these negative thoughts.
You give up too easily.
Without a doubt, perseverance is valuable. 39(2.5分) Yet giving up at the first sign of difficulty robs you of the chance to build resilience (抗逆力) . Do you abandon goals when you hit a small barrier? Is “I can’t do this” your automatic response? This habit keeps you stuck in failure, rather than letting you use it as a stepping stone.
This is a subtle but harmful habit. If you compare your progress to others’ highlights, you’ll discount your own growth and lose motivation. Your struggles are a sign you’re pushing yourself, not a sign of weakness. Your unique path matters.
A.You compare your progress to others’.
B.You celebrate others’ achievements openly.
C.You know that pushing through hardship is the right path.
D.Chances are that you know you should reflect after a failure.
E.Instead of questioning these beliefs, you accept them as truth.
F.But you can use the following four ways to turn setbacks into motivation.
G.Be aware of the traps that may keep you from turning setbacks into motivation.
【答案】36.G 37.D 38.E 39.C 40.A
根据空前的“Many people view setbacks as roadblocks that stop their progress, but in reality, they can be powerful fuel for growth. If you often feel stuck after a setback and struggle to move forward, it’s time to examine your mindset and habits.(很多人把挫折视为阻碍前进的绊脚石,但实际上挫折可以成为成长的强大动力。如果你常常在受挫后停滞不前、难以继续前行,那就该审视自己的心态和习惯了。)”以及下文分段介绍的四种负面思维误区可知,文章首段提出要正视挫折、自查问题,空格处需要总领全文,引出下文所有阻碍成长的错误习惯。G选项“Be aware of the traps that may keep you from turning setbacks into motivation (警惕那些可能阻碍你将挫折转化为动力的陷阱)”承接上文审视自我心态的观点,精准引出下文四个具体的思维陷阱,起到承上启下、统领全篇的作用,逻辑紧密,符合语境。
37.根据空前的“Setbacks carry hidden lessons, but a lot of people rush to move on without pausing to learn.(挫折中暗藏经验教训,但很多人急于翻篇,不愿停下来总结、学习。)” 以及空后的“Nonetheless, do you take time to analyze what went wrong and what you could do differently? If not, you’re likely to repeat the same mistakes and miss the chance to grow stronger.(即便如此,你是否会花时间分析问题、反思改进?如果不会,就容易重蹈覆辙、错失成长机会。)”可知,上下文构成转折关系,强调人们明知该反思却从不反思的普遍问题。D 选项“Chances are that you know you should reflect after a failure (你很可能知道失败过后应该自我反思)”先点明人们普遍具备的正确认知,与后文实际不作为形成强烈反差,完美衔接转折逻辑,贴合本段“拒绝复盘反思”的中心,符合语境。
38.根据空前的“You’ve told yourself before that you’re capable of growth, but after this failure, you start to believe you’re not good enough.(你原本相信自己可以成长进步,但经历失败后,开始认为自己不够优秀。)”以及空后的“Your confidence fades, but you don’t fight against these negative thoughts.(你的自信心逐渐消退,却不会主动对抗这些消极想法。)”
39.根据空前的“Without a doubt, perseverance is valuable.(毫无疑问,坚持不懈、持之以恒是非常可贵的品质。)”以及空后的“Yet giving up at the first sign of difficulty robs you of the chance to build resilience (抗逆力).(然而一遇到困难就轻言放弃,会让你错失培养抗挫折能力的机会。)”
40.分析语篇可知,此处为段落小标题,与前文“You avoid reflecting on the lessons.”以及“You let self-doubt take over.” 根据空后的“This is a subtle but harmful habit. If you compare your progress to others’ highlights, you’ll discount your own growth and lose motivation.(这是一种隐蔽但有害的习惯。如果你拿自己的进度和他人的高光时刻作比较,就会低估自己的成长、丧失前进动力。)”可知,本段全程围绕与人攀比的不良习惯展开论述。A选项“You compare your progress to others’. (你拿自己的成长进度和他人作比较)”句式工整统一,精准概括本段核心误区,统领整段内容,符合语境。

五、书面表达
66.(本题15分)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I own a white Ford Focus. I’ve been driving it to work for five years. It looks almost new because I wash and polish it every weekend. But its rear bumper (后保险杠) has a scratch (划痕) that I’ve never bothered to repair. Whenever someone asks about it, I just shake my head and change the subject. Only I know it’s a reminder of a rainy evening I’ll never forget.
It was a cold autumn night; I was driving home from work, tired and impatient, eager to get away from the heavy rain. I was speeding along a narrow street, my windshield wipers struggling to keep up with the downpour, when I suddenly felt a violent shake from the back of my car. Someone had rear-ended me!
I jumped out, my anger rising fast. Rain poured down, wetting my shirt in seconds. “What were you thinking?! Are you out of your mind?” I shouted, my voice sharp with annoyance. Behind me was an old, beat-up pickup truck, and standing next to it was a young woman, no older than 25, holding a crying baby in her arms. Her face was pale with panic.
“I’m so sorry!” she shouted over the rain. “I didn’t see you! My baby is sick — she has a high fever — and I was rushing to the hospital. Please, I’m so sorry about your car!” Her voice trembled with fear and exhaustion.
Through the rain, I could see the baby’s red face and hear her weak cries. The woman looked desperately at the dark road ahead, and then back at me, tears mixing with raindrops on her cheeks. “Please,” she begged, “I don’t have insurance, and I can’t afford repairs. But my baby needs a doctor now.” Hearing this, the anger inside me went away, replaced by a deep sense of pity and an urgent need to help.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
I told her to get into my car so I could take her to the hospital.

A week later, I received a phone call from an unknown number.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
I told her to get into my car so I could take her to the hospital. She parked her truck at a roadside spot and climbed in, holding her baby tightly. Within minutes, we reached the emergency room. She rushed inside. I followed and waited in the hallway until a nurse came out and told me the baby’s fever was coming down. Knowing the child was out of danger, I felt totally relieved. Since I did not want to disturb the mother while she cared for her baby, I wrote down my phone number on a piece of paper, handed it to the nurse, and asked her to pass it to the mother when she was free.
A week later, I received a phone call from an unknown number. It was the mother. Her voice was warm and full of joy. “My baby is completely fine now,” she said, “I can’t thank you enough for what you did that night.” She paused and then added, “I want to pay for your car repair. I’ve been saving up.” I smiled and told her it wasn’t necessary. “The scratch is quite minor,” I said. “And to be honest, I’ve decided to keep it.” “Why?” she asked. I replied, “Because it reminds me that kindness matters more than a perfect bumper.” She laughed softly and thanked me again before we said goodbye.

The final exams at Oakwood High were around the corner, and with them, a whispered topic had spread among the seniors: the “Special Room” — a separate, quieter room for students with special needs. With an approved note, students could gain extra time for tests in the room.
Leo knew all about it. He was the kind of student who filled his textbooks with colored words and stayed up late reviewing, yet his scores remained frustratingly average. However, his friend, Ethan, who always passed exams effortlessly, should have got the approved note. Leo felt a wave of unease.
The pressure peaked when his father, who was worried about college, suggested, “Have you thought about applying for the ‘Special Room’? It might help!” The message was clear. Hoping to relieve the growing anxiety of his own as well as his family’s, Leo applied for the “special room” and eventually he secured the official approval. The note in his hand felt heavy, a clear solution bringing no peace.
The evening before the crucial chemistry exam, Leo stared at the note beside his textbook, torn by an inner conflict: “I am not sick; I am just slow. This note is an official permit, but why do I feel like a cheater to use it? I have worked hard for so long, but is it enough for my future? Still, is it worth losing my self-respect?”
On exam day, the hallway was a river of nervous energy. To the left was the entrance to the “Special Room”, watched over by Mr. Smith. Leo saw Ethan show his approved note and bounce away. Leo’s hand reached his own pocket, where the note was folded. He felt it there, heavy. The sounds of the crowd around him seemed to fade, leaving him standing between two choices: the ready-made help in his pocket, and the door to the main examination hall, where he would be tested on his own.

Then, determined, Leo walked into the main examination hall. The rustling of papers and the quick instructions from the teacher made his heart beat faster. He took a deep breath, pushing aside thoughts of the special room he had given up. As the exam began, he focused solely on the questions, recalling his colored words. Time pressed on, yet he refused to be discouraged by any difficulty. He kept working steadily, determined to secure every point he could earn. The final minutes were a race, but as he placed his pen down, profound calm settled over him. He had faced the challenge directly and honestly, with nothing but his own preparation.
Weeks later, the long-awaited exam results were posted. Leo found his name on the list — a ‘B’ in chemistry, a grade that mirrored his honest effort. A sense of quiet satisfaction warmed him. As he turned to leave, Mr. Smith came up to him. “Leo,” he said, with clear appreciation in his voice, “I saw you choose the main hall that day. That took integrity. In my book, that counts for more than any ‘A’.” Those words struck Leo deeply. He realized then that the true reward wasn’t the letter on the board, but the unshakable respect which he had earned for himself. He had taken a far more important test and, most importantly, he had passed it.

You let self-doubt take over.
