Small talk is a wonderful way of bonding, learning and growing. What makes it challenging is the fact that we can hardly be prepared for it. We just go with what's happening in the moment. When you first get into a small talk situation, I think we need to establish appropriate goals. Rachel Greenwald, an academic, has this wonderful saying. Your goal is to be interested, not interesting. We often think that we need to be fascinating when in fact we just need to be present and be interested in the conversation that's happening. And then, to get good at small talk, you need to give yourself permission to adjust your pace. Many of us have the sense that speed of response is associated with competence, but what really reflects your competence is an appropriate response. And appropriateness can take a little bit of time, so here are some things you can do to help you.

(本题10分)Saahil Mehta, a 40-year-old Indian living in the United Arab Emirates, believes in gifting his two children, Yuvraj, 8 and Alisha, 6, experiences rather than material possessions (东西) to celebrate special occasions. This could be in the form of a visit to a theme park or a staycation in a new hotel.
“As a result, their desire to buy things has gone down. This is our way of addressing their basic needs,” said Mehta.
In December 2019, Mehta took the family to visit the Indian city of Dharamshala where they spent time with poor children in a school. This was an eye-opener for Alisha and Yuvraj, as they realised that what was normal for them was a treat for those kids. “For those kids, it is a blessing (幸福) to be able to attend school. This experience taught my kids to count their blessings,” said Mehta.
During the holiday, the Mehta family gave away pens and pencils to 250 children. This helped Alisha and Yuvraj understand the cost difference in schooling. “They notice how much we spend on their education. The difference in costs helped them make a comparison,” explained Mehta.
Back home, the kids are encouraged to do basic housework like making their beds, opening curtains, etc. But Mehta never gives them money for doing those things. This way, they are taught that everyone has to chip in to keep the household running. When they do other tasks beyond the essentials, like massaging the mother’s shoulders, etc., Mehta pays them a small amount.
Pointing out a weakness in the education system, Mehta said children don’t get any experience in financial literacy (知识) until they attend university. The father is planning to introduce the concept of a family bank to his children. He also wants his children to pay attention to financial pitfalls such as spending beyond their means, too much use of credit cards, etc. He has set a plan on how money will be spent on some needs. It’s up to his children to use the money carefully.

B.They should make friends with the poor.

26.(2.5分)Why did Mehta refuse to pay his children for doing housework?

B.To show that it’s what they’re supposed to do.
C.To encourage them to be selfless and careful.
D.To force them to develop a good habit.
27.(2.5分)What is the problem with the education system according to Mehta?
A.It doesn’t prepare children for money management.
B.It doesn’t suggest the importance of saving money.
C.It doesn’t encourage children to pay with cash.

This is our way of addressing their basic needs(因此,他们购买东西的欲望下降了。

(本题10分)Language is not just a tool for communication; it’s also a playground for the mind. English, especially, is famous for its rich vocabulary and influence from many different languages, which provides a great basis for creativity and humor. One example of this is the use of puns (双关语) —the clever or humorous use of a word that has more than one meaning, or of words that have different meanings but sound the same.
Puns can be divided into different types. Homophonic (同音的) puns depend on word pairs that sound alike but have different meanings, like “A bicycle can’t stand on its own because it’s two-tired.” Homographic (语义) puns use words that are spelled the same but have different meanings and sometimes different pronunciations, for example, “I can’t bear the weight of that bear.” Another type of pun often joins homophonic and homographic, creating even more difficult wordplay, for example, “I was struggling to work out how lightning works, but then it struck me.”
The history of puns in English literature and culture is rich and interesting. Their development shows how language, culture, and humor have changed over time. Puns have been a part of English literature from the early days, appearing in texts from the Middle Ages and Shakespeare’s plays, often used for humor or to express double meanings. During the Victorian Era, strict social standard promoted the use of puns, as they allowed people to comment on issues while avoiding directness. Today, puns are widely used in advertising, television, and social media, showing how English wordplay adapts to different contexts and media.
People’s opinions of puns have changed throughout history. Once seen as a sign of cleverness, puns were sometimes regarded as low-level humor. However, in recent years, they’ve regained popularity, largely due to the Internet and social media, which allow for quick sharing and creativity in pun-based humor.

C.They are creative and humorous. D.They all sound the same.
29.(2.5分)Which of the following is a homographic pun?

B.Six is afraid of seven because seven ate nine.
C.I only know 25 letters of the alphabet; I don’t know Y.

30.(2.5分)What was the main purpose of using puns in the Victorian Era?
A.To break rules completely. B.To express ideas indirectly.

31.(2.5分)What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.The rise and fall of puns’ popularity.

(本题10分)Britain’s unique take on humor may seem confusing at first. But fear not, we’ve put together a beginner’s guide to understanding it.
The key to understanding British humor is not to take it too seriously. Their humor is to highlight their own faults. They make light of their own failures so as to appear more humble, approachable and relatable. There is no room for egos (自尊) in British humor. Embarrassing moments are common self-deprecation (自嘲) material.
Self-deprecation mixed with sarcasm (讽刺) forms the key of British humor. Sarcasm and irony are rooted in their DNA.Their humor is produced with world-class timing and nearly always with an expressionless delivery that will leave you wondering whether it was indeed a joke. Sarcasm can be hard to spot in a new language and a new culture, and in Britain the usual clues of overstatement and an overemphasis on adjectives are stressed even less, making it harder to pick up. Luckily, sarcasm is used so often in day-to-day life that you will soon be a natural at detecting it.
Being polite by nature, Brits may playfully “offend” people they like with tongue-in-cheek comments. These are not mean, but a light verbal exchange with a smile, which can bridge differences and start conversations, though such comments need to suit the occasion.
Brits find humor in almost everything. Brits use humor to lighten even the most unfortunate, miserable moments. There are few subjects they don’t joke about. Brits turn to laughter as a form of medicine when life knocks them and those around them down. In most cultures, there is a time and place for humor. In Britain, this is not the case.

A.They often tell jokes improperly.
B.They have an optimistic attitude to life.
C.They like to argue with others humorously.
D.They show their sense of humor on specific occasions.

三、完形填空
(本题15分)I used to be shy and 41 around strangers — my voice would shake, my hands sweat. One day, I saw an old woman sitting alone on a park bench. Her face was 42 with sadness, like a rain-clouded sky.
Without thinking, I 43 next to her. “Hello,” I said softly, my voice barely above a whisper. She looked up, 44 , as if no one had spoken to her in weeks. “Hello, dear,” she replied.
We talked for hours. Her name was Mrs. Chen, and she’d lost her husband 45 — they’d been married 50 years. “Your smile 46 my day,” she said before leaving, squeezing my hand. “I haven’t laughed like that in months.”
The next week, I saw her again. This time, she 47 me with a big smile, waving me over. “I’ve been 48 you,” she said, patting the bench. We shared stories — her first date with Mr. Chen, my awkward first day of school — and laughter, until the sun dipped below the trees.
Months later, Mrs. Chen moved to a nursing home. I visited her 49 , bringing her favorite jasmine tea. “You’re my sunshine,” she’d say, holding my hand as we watched the nurses wheel other residents by.
I realized that a simple 50 could brighten someone’s life — cost nothing, but mean everything. Now, I 51 at everyone I meet — the barista, the bus driver, the kid struggling with his backpack — it’s a small act that feels 52 at first, but it holds 53 power. Its value is 54 , and its warmth 55 with every new face it touches.

24.(2.5分)What do we know about Mehta’s way of gifting his children?
A.It isn’t really to their liking.
B.It changes the way they buy things.
C.It allows him to connect with them.
D.It teaches them about spending money wisely.
25.(2.5分)What did Mehta’s children learn during the visit to Dharamshala?
A.They should appreciate what they have.
B.They should make friends with the poor.
C.They should cut the cost of their education.
D.They should treat different people differently.
26.(2.5分)Why did Mehta refuse to pay his children for doing housework?
A.To warn that they must work hard to make money.
D.It doesn’t teach children ways to make money.

32.(2.5分)What do Brits tend to do according to paragraph 2?
A.Make fun of themselves. B.Laugh at others’ failures.
C.Pay attention to their egos. D.Avoid embarrassing experiences.

A.It’s regarded as impolite.
B.It’s shown with overstatement.

D.It’s quite common among the Brits.

A.They often tell jokes improperly.
B.They have an optimistic attitude to life.
C.They like to argue with others humorously.
D.They show their sense of humor on specific occasions.
35.(2.5分)Which can be the suitable title for the text?
