Last year, we managed to raise an impressive seven hundred fifty pounds for water aid, and we sincerely hope to raise even more money this year. And I would like to say a huge thank you to all of you who have so kindly offers to help set up the hall on the day. I am pleased to announce that I now have some volunteers who will organize the refreshments for the evening and check the tickets at the door. However, I am still looking for another person who would be willing to design the poster for the concert. Please come and see me later today. The summer I turned 10, the camp counselors talked us into a game of street hockey on the gym’s squeaky floor. I was chubby and uncoordinated(不协调的)— useless under pressure — and rushing to steal the ball, I took a stick directly to the mouth and tasted blood at once. Mike, one of the counselors, hurried over and put a hand on my shoulder. “You’re okay, buddy. Just walk it off.” Then I leaned forward and spat the broken pieces of my tooth into my palm. “Okaaaaay,” said Mike, backing away. “I’ll go call your mom.”
At the dentist’s office, Dr. Iriana built up layer upon layer of composite resin(复合树脂)until he had shaped something roughly toothlike. To me it looked like a little white tombstone. The cap, he explained, was temporary. Naive boy that I was, I believed my tooth trouble was behind me.
Then, in junior high, it began to discolor. My tooth seemed to age, fading like a paperback(平装书)left in the sun. I hated it because I was certain everyone else hated it too. So began my long era of tight-lipped, toothless grins.
Decades later, I finally had it fixed. The new dentist was calm and kind. As she built up layers of tooth-colored resin, she asked now and then whether I was all right. The whole thing took less than an hour. Driving home, I kept opening and closing my mouth, my eyes moving between the road ahead and my reflection in the rear view mirror. For the first time in decades, I smiled an unbroken smile.
More than three years have passed. No one seemed to care. I waited for people to notice, the way they do when you get a new pair of glasses or lose weight. But nothing. I was surprised, then a little wounded. It seems ridiculous, but I sometimes miss the snaggletooth that made my smile wild and singular. And I wonder: What are we trying to change — our teeth or ourselves?
24. How did the author break his front tooth?
A. He fell and hit the wall. B. A stick struck him in the mouth.
C. He bit something hard at a meal. D. A hockey hit him during the game.
25. Why does the author mention the counselor’s change of words — from“Just walk it off” to“I’ll go call your mom”?
A. To criticise the camp for poor safety standards.
B. To add humour and show the injury was serious.
C. To explain why he gave up hockey for good.
D. To show how calm and professional they were.
26. What does the underlined word“wounded” in the last paragraph most likely mean?
A. Hurt in one’s feelings. B. Injured in the body.
C. Made extremely angry. D. Damaged beyond repair.
27. What is the main message of the Text ?
A. It is unwise to repair a tooth too early.
B. People notice our looks less than we think.
C. What needs changing is how we see ourselves.
D. Modern dentistry easily repairs childhood dental damage
B 25. B 26. A 27. C
根据第一段中的“I was chubby and uncoordinated(不协调的)— useless under pressure — and rushing to steal the ball, I took a stick directly to the mouth and tasted blood at once.(我当时胖胖的,动作还不协调 —— 压力之下完全发挥不出水平。在我冲上去抢球的时候,球杆直接打到我的嘴上,我立刻尝到了血腥味。)” 可知,一根球杆打到作者的嘴,造成门牙断裂。
【25题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段中的““You’re okay, buddy. Just walk it off.” Then I leaned forward and spat the broken pieces of my tooth into my palm. “Okaaaaay,” saidMike, backing away. “I’ll go call your mom.”(“没事的,孩子,忍一忍就过去了。”接着我俯身,把碎牙吐到掌心。“好吧好吧,”迈克一边后退一边说,“我去给你妈妈打电话。”)”可知,辅导员前后话语形成强烈反差,增添幽默效果,同时表明伤势比预想的严重。
【26题详解】
词句猜测题。根据最后一段中的“I waited for people to notice, the way they do when you get a new pair of glasses or lose weight. But nothing. I was surprised, then a little wounded. (我一直等着别人发现,就像人们看到你换新眼镜或者瘦了的时候那样。但是没有人注意。我很惊讶,随后心里有点wounded。)”可知,此处不是身体受伤,而是情感、内心受到伤害。Hurt in one’s feelings(情感上受伤)符合词义。
根据最后一段中的“And I wonder: What are we trying to change — our teeth or ourselves? (我不禁思考:我们想要改变的,是我们的牙齿,还是我们自己?)”可知,文章的主要信息是真正需要改变的是我们看待自己的方式。

A new report from the U.S. National Academies finds that marine carbon dioxide removal (CDR)could play an important role in addressing climate change. But it faces significant scientific, technical and governance challenges that could limit its deployment.
The report updates the Academies’2022 strategy, focusing on governance and on one technique — ocean alkalinity (碱度) enhancement (OAE).
“The ocean is too large a part of the carbon cycle to ignore, and we need every viable tool for addressing climate change,” said Galen McKinley, a climate scientist who helped produce the report. “But the case for marine CDR at scale has to be built on evidence we do not yet have. OAE remains promising, but there are still major uncertainties about how much carbon it would actually remove and what it would take to scale responsibly.”
The need is urgent. A recent United Nations report warns that global temperatures will likely pass 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels within a decade. It calls for cutting emissions while scaling up carbon removal.
Marine CDR research has advanced significantly since 2022, through ocean field trials, laboratory studies and modeling. Private companies have begun selling marine CDR carbon credits. Governments, meanwhile, are still debating how to regulate the research.
OAE involves adding alkalinity to seawater so that surface waters can absorb more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. In theory, carbon stored this way could remain in the ocean for thousands of years. But major questions remain. How do alkaline materials dissolve (溶解), and how fast does the ocean take up the extra carbon? How can we tell intervention-removed carbon from the ocean’s far larger natural sink? And would large-scale use still remove carbon once mining, processing and transport are counted? “Transparent, consistent life-cycle accounting has to be part of any carbon removal claim,” said McKinley, “And current practices are inconsistent enough to make approaches hard to compare.”
Governance gaps could limit near-term progress. The ocean is a global commons shared by all countries, and existing laws were largely written with other activities in mind. “They often fit awkwardly around approaches that may pose environmental risks but are ultimately intended to deliver climate benefits,” said Romany Webb, a law scholar on the committee. “Unless clearer governance frameworks are put in place, advancing marine CDR may prove impossible.”
The authors stress that marine CDR should complement rapid emissions reductions, not replace them. Whether these approaches can prove effective, durable, verifiable and acceptable at meaningful scales remains to be established.
28. What is the main obstacle to scaling-up marine CDR according to McKinley?
A. Lack of private investment. B. Conflicting field trial data.
C. Short carbon-storage period. D. Insufficient supporting evidence.
29. What do we know about OAE?
A. It lowers seawater salt content. B. It has cleared all its uncertainties.
C. It helps seawater absorb more CO2. D. It is under worldwide legal ban.
30. What does “fit awkwardly” in Paragraph 7 imply?
A. Present laws poorly suit marine CDR.
B. Marine CDR brings huge economic gains.
C. New rules have been made for ocean studies.
D. Environmental risks of CDR have been eliminated.
31. Which may be the best title of the passage?
A. OAE: the best fix for climate change. B. Global trade rules for ocean industries.
C. Ways to cut greenhouse-gas emissions. D. Marine CDR: promising but problematic.
D 29. C 30. A 31. D

根据第三段“But the case for marine CDR at scale has to be built on evidence we do not yet have.(但是,要大规模推行海洋碳移除技术,其依据尚有待我们去获取,目前还缺乏相关证据支撑。)”
根据第六段“OAE involves adding alkalinity to seawater so that surface waters can absorb more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.(海洋碱度增强技术是向海水中添加碱性物质,从而让表层海水吸收更多大气中的二氧化碳)”可知OAE帮助海水吸收更多二氧化碳。
根据第七段“The ocean is a global commons shared by all countries, and existing laws were largely written with other activities in mind. “They often fit awkwardly around approaches that may pose environmental risks but are ultimately intended to deliver climate benefits,” said Romany Webb, a law scholar on the committee.(海洋是由所有国家共享的全球公共资源,现行法律在制定时主要考虑的是其他海洋活动。委员会的法学学者罗玛尼·韦伯表示:“这类法律常常fit awkwardly,这些方案可能带来环境风险,但最终目的是产生气候效益。”)”可知,这些方案可能带来环境风险,但最终目的是产生气候效益,说明现行法律很难适配海洋CDR这项新技术,故划线词意思是“当前法律不太适合海洋CDR”。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“A new report from the U. S. National Academies finds that marine carbon dioxide removal(CDR)could play an important role in addressing climate change. But it faces significant scientific, technical and governance challenges that could limit its deployment.(美国国家科学院的一份新报告发现,海洋二氧化碳移除技术(CDR)在应对气候变化方面能够发挥重要作用。但该技术面临重大的科学、技术与治理层面难题,这些难题可能会限制它的推广应用)”以及全文开篇点明海洋CDR有潜力,但面临科学、技术、治理层面诸多难题;文章既讲前景,又讲各类问题。D选项“海洋二氧化碳移除:前景可观,但存在难题”最符合文章标题。
D
On June 29, 2026, the snow that Switzerland’s glaciers had accumulated over the previous winter was gone. Known as Glacier Loss Day, it marks the point at which further melting starts eating into the glaciers’ own mass. This year it arrived “three months too early, compared to a healthy state,” said Matthias Huss, who heads the country’s glacier monitoring network.
The idea is modeled on Earth Overshoot Day — a check on a glacier’s health and a signal of wider warming across the Alps. This year’s Glacier Loss Day was the second earliest on record, just three days later than in 2022, a year in which the country’s glaciers lost about six percent of their mass.
Experts attribute the early melt mainly to two European heatwaves in June and July, which pushed temperatures above 40°C in parts of central Europe. The daytime freezing level rose to 4,500 metres, and even high up there was little refreezing overnight. The result is not only thinner ice but a greater risk of avalanches and unstable slopes.
A second factor compounds the damage. Snow depth across the central Alps last winter was among the five lowest in three decades. With less snow to reflect sunlight, more of the darker, older ice beneath is exposed. That ice has a lower albedo, so it absorbs more of the sun’s energy — and its exposure speeds the melting further.
The consequences reach far beyond the ice. The Rhône Glacier is losing an average of ten centimetres of thickness a day, and its meltwater feeds the Rhône River, which supplies drinking water to roughly 2.5 million people and irrigates farms along its course. In the short term the extra run-off helps a region in the grip of drought. But once the ice is gone, it can no longer sustain the river in mid-and late summer, when communities downstream have long depended on it.
Some resorts have tried to buy time. Tignes, in the French Alps, installed artificial snow machines at the edge of its glacier runs in 2013; this summer its usual six-week summer ski season closed early for lack of snow. Jeffrey Schlegelmilch, a disaster preparedness expert at Columbia, calls such fixes a form of “maladaptation”: they buy a ski season a few more years while locking a community deeper into an economy that is going away.
If temperatures rise more than 2.7 °C above pre-industrial levels, researchers predict, 97 percent of European glaciers could disappear by 2100. For mountain communities, Schlegelmilch argues, the useful question is not how to keep this summer from happening again. It is which of these changes are permanent, and what the local economy and infrastructure need to look like on the other side of them.
32. What does “Glacier Loss Day” refer to?
A. A date for measuring glacier thickness. B. The peak-risk day of alpine avalanches.
C. The start-point of glacier-ice melting. D. The first-snow day on glaciers in autumn.
33. Why does less snow speed up glacier melting?
A. It accelerates meltwater flow on surfaces. B. Dark old ice absorbs more solar energy.
C. Less meltwater is left for glacier cooling. D. Earth’s inner heat reaches ice more easily.
34. What does “maladaptation” mean concerning snow machines?
A. They fully save the local ski season. B. They suffer serious technical defects.
C. They are unaffordable for mountain towns. D. Short-term gain at the cost of long-term reform.
35. What is the best title for the text ?
A. Severe Heatwaves Sweep Across European Alps
B. European Glaciers: Vital Fresh-Water Resources
C. Artificial Snow: Savior for European Ski Industry
D. Melting Glaciers: Mountain Towns Need New Future
C 33. B 34. D 35. D
根据第一段中“Known as Glacier Loss Day, it marks the point at which further melting starts eating into the glaciers’ own mass.(它被称为冰川损耗日,标志着进一步的消融开始侵蚀冰川自身实体的节点)”可知,冰川损耗日指的是冰川自身冰层开始融化的起始点。
根据第四段中“With less snow to reflect sunlight, more of the darker, older ice beneath is exposed. That ice has a lower albedo, so it absorbs more of the sun’s energy — and its exposure speeds the melting further.(由于能反射阳光的积雪变少,下方颜色更深的老冰层更多暴露出来。
综合全文,尤其最后一段“For mountain communities, Schlegelmilch argues, the useful question is not how to keep this summer from happening again. It is which of these changes are permanent, and what the local economy and infrastructure need to look like on the other side of them.(施莱格尔米尔希认为,对于山区社群而言,有价值的问题不在于如何防止今夏这类灾害再度发生,而在于这些变化里哪些是永久性的,以及经历这些变化之后,当地的经济和基础设施应当是什么样子。)”

How a Learning Journal Can Make You a Better Student
Many students finish a day of classes with pages of notes but no idea what they actually learned. A learning journal solves this problem. It is a small notebook where you spend five minutes after class writing down what happened in your head — not just on the blackboard. ____36____
● Write about problems, not just facts.
Copying down facts feels safe, but it changes little. Instead, write about what confused you. ____37____ When you name a difficulty clearly, you turn a foggy feeling into a question you can solve.
●____38____
A journal works only if you return to it. Spend two minutes every Friday reading your week’s entries. You will be surprised how often last week’s “impossible” problem looks easy now. That moment shows you that you are growing.
●Connect new lessons to old ones.
Real learning happens when ideas meet. ____39____ For example, when you study a new physics rule, ask yourself where you have seen the same idea in math or in daily life. These connections turn separate facts into a network you actually remember.
A learning journal is not homework for a teacher to check. ____40____ Start tonight: one page, five minutes, three honest sentences. In a month, you may find the best teacher you have is yourself.
A. Review your journal regularly.
B. Choose a beautiful notebook first.
C. Here are some simple ways to start one.

At seventeen, Clara reshelved books in the school library while her classmates rehearsed (排练)for the debate team. The stutter (口吃)had arrived when she was nine and had never really left; words piled up behind her teeth like traffic at a closed bridge. So she chose the quiet corners of the world and told herself it was a preference, not a fear. But fear, like water, always finds the crack.
Only Jamal knew better. He had once found her in the empty drama room at dusk, reciting a speech to a row of shadowy chairs, steady and entirely fluent. “You sound like a different person,” he said. Clara went scarlet and made him swear never to tell.
He kept that promise. But he soon changed his idea. With the school speech contest approaching, he wanted her to showcase her true talent. He secretly signed her up for Voices, the school’s speaking night, theme: “Overcoming.”
When she found the unexpected entry form in her locker, she rounded on him sharply, nervous and annoyed. She thought she would be in silence forever and she didn’t belong to the stage.
That evening Clara sat turning her grandfather’s river stone over in her palm. He had pressed it into her hand years ago, when he taught her to speak around the block in her throat; he had stuttered himself, and had talked to a roomful of children for thirty years. She decided she would not read her speech. She would learn it by heart, until it lived in her bones rather than on the page.
The hall was too hot. From the wings she found the seat she had saved in the seventh row, still empty. At the judges’ table sat Mr. Halvorsen, who had cut her off mid-sentence at the science fair two years ago and suggested she might be “more of a writer.” Her chest locked. Then the host said her name.

Hands shaking, Clara walked into the light, and the microphone gave a long, cruel squeal. Dust drifted through the lights; the hall held its breath. Her lips parted — the first word jammed, the second snagged. A boy sneered, sending a flush over her cheeks. Panic clawed at her throat; silence closed over her. It was then that her fingers closed on the stone which embodied her grandpa’s hope and encouragement. She switched off the mic, lifted her jaw, and flung out her voice — loud, unhurried, chanting.
When she stopped speaking, the hall was so quiet that she was certain she had failed. It was Mr. Halvorsen who pushed back his chair, rose, and started the applause. Her gaze swept the seventh row — no longer empty. The panic drained; a steady warmth took its place. Jamal sat there, a bright smile blooming on his face. She descended the steps, walked straight up to him and showed gratitude to him. “You made it.” Jamal whispered, voice trembling. It dawned on her that courage was not the absence of fear, but the choice to move forward bravely despite it.

D. It records your thinking, not just your notes.
E. Try to link each new idea to something you already know.
F. Many students, however, never open their notebooks again.
G. For instance, write down exactly which step of a math problem lost you.
