As we grow older, we start facing more choices in life—from picking after-school activities to deciding how to spend our pocket money. Some think we should depend on parents for these decisions, while others believe we need to try making choices ourselves. What do middle school students think about this? Let’s see four students’ ideas.
Wang HongLast month, I wanted to buy a very expensive toy. My dad told me it would break easily and suggested cheaper building blocks (积木). I didn’t follow his advice, but the toy broke in two days. Our parents can help us avoid silly mistakes.
Zhang WeiFor small things, like choosing what to eat for breakfast or which storybook to borrow from the library, we can decide alone. But for big things, like choosing a new school or a future job, we need to ask parents for advice.
Li MingLast term, I joined the science club although my mom wanted me to join the art club. I tried it and even won a small prize in a competition! Making the decision by myself makes me feel good, and I can do something I really like.
Zhao YaLast week, I planned a weekend trip with my friends, even though our parents didn’t support it at first. We decided everything ourselves. This was a great experience. Making decisions on my own allows me to do what I love and helps me improve my abilities.
26.What did Wang Hong realize after the toy broke?
A.Expensive toys are always of good quality.
B.Parents’ advice can help avoid silly mistakes.
C.Building blocks are good toy choices.
D.It’s better to buy toys without asking parents.

Have you ever wondered why leaves change color in autumn? This beautiful natural phenomenon has a scientific explanation behind it. Leaves are green because they contain chlorophyll, which helps plants make food from sunlight. During spring and summer, there is plenty of sunlight, so chlorophyll works hard and keeps the leaves green. Chlorophyll is always breaking down and being replaced, so the leaves stay green.
As autumn comes, the days get shorter and there is less sunlight. The temperature also drops. This signals the tree to stop producing chlorophyll. As the green chlorophyll disappears, other colors in the leaves start to show. There are yellow and orange pigments that have been there all along, but they were covered by the green chlorophyll.
Red and purple colors are a bit different. They are made in autumn when there is bright sunlight and cool nights. The sugar in the leaves gets trapped and produces a red pigment. This is why some trees like maples turn bright red in autumn.
The timing of color change depends on several factors. Temperature, light and water all play a role. Warmer autumn days and cool nights usually produce the most beautiful colors. However, if there is too much rain or an early frost, the leaves may fall before they fully change color.
Next time you see colorful leaves in autumn, you will know the amazing science behind this beautiful natural show.
29.What makes leaves green according to the passage?
A.Sunlight B.Water C.Chlorophyll D.Sugar
30.When do leaves begin to change color?
A.When there is more rainfall. B.When days get shorter and cooler.
C.When trees produce more chlorophyll. D.When the temperature rises quickly.
31.Why do some leaves turn red in autumn?
A.Because there is no chlorophyll at all.
B.Because yellow pigments change into red.
C.Because sugar in leaves produces red pigment.
D.Because cold weather makes leaves turn red directly.
32.Which of the following factors does NOT influence the timing of color change?
A.Wind speed B.Temperature C.Light D.Water

A New Invention: Solar-Powered Backpack
In recent years, more and more people pay attention to environmental protection. A group of college students in Shanghai have invented a solar-powered backpack, which is both practical and eco-friendly.
The solar-powered backpack has a small solar panel (太阳能板) on the back. It can collect sunlight and convert it into electricity. The electricity is stored in a battery inside the backpack. People can use the battery to charge their phones, tablets and other electronic devices. “We got the idea when we went hiking last year,” said Li Ming, one of the inventors. “We often ran out of battery on our phones, so we wanted to make a backpack that can charge devices.”
The inventors spent six months developing the backpack. They tested different solar panels and batteries to find the best ones. “The biggest challenge was making the backpack light and durable (耐用的) ,” said Wang Hua, another inventor. “We used lightweight materials for the backpack and a high-quality battery that can last for a long time.”
The solar-powered backpack has many advantages. First, it’s eco-friendly—it uses clean energy from the sun, so it doesn’t produce pollution. Second, it’s convenient—people can charge their devices anywhere during the day. Third, it’s affordable—the price is about 300 yuan, which is cheaper than many other solar products.
Now, the inventors are working with a company to produce the backpack. They hope to sell it in stores across China next year. “We want to encourage more people to use clean energy,” said Li Ming. “Small inventions can make a big difference to the environment.”
33.What can the solar-powered backpack do?
A.It can collect rainwater. B.It can charge electronic devices.
C.It can play music. D.It can keep food cold.
34.Why did the students invent the solar-powered backpack?
A.Because they wanted to make money.
B.Because they often ran out of battery on hiking trips.
C.Because their teacher asked them to do it.
D.Because they wanted to win an invention contest.
35.What was the biggest challenge for the inventors?
A.Finding a company to produce the backpack.
B.Making the backpack light and durable.
C.Reducing the price of the backpack.
D.Explaining how the backpack works.
36.What is the price of the solar-powered backpack?
A.About 100 yuan. B.About 200 yuan. C.About 300 yuan. D.About 400 yuan.
D
①Do you often feel tired when you get up? That may be because you woke up in the wrong part of your sleep cycle. Our sleep moves in 90-minute cycles, and we usually have five or six of these cycles every night.
②The first stage (阶段) is light sleep. In this stage, your muscles relax, your body temperature drops a little, and your heart beats more slowly. You can still be woken up easily. Next comes deep sleep. This is the most difficult time to wake you up. Your body uses this time to repair itself and build up energy for the next day. After that, you enter REM sleep. REM stands for rapid eye movement. This is when your dreams happen. Your eyes move quickly, and your brain is very active. When REM sleep ends, the whole cycle begins again.
③Waking up in the morning in the “wrong” stage can make you feel especially tired. An app called Sleep Calculator can help you avoid this. It’s a tool designed to work out the perfect bedtime for you based on your wake-up time. This smart calculator considers the sleep cycles your body goes through each night. Whether you’re an early bird or a night owl, just type in your wake-up time, and the calculator will tell you the best time to go to bed. You’ll wake up feeling energetic and light, as if (仿佛) you could jump out of bed with a spring in your legs.
④However, calculating your bedtime is not enough. Regular bedtime is also important. You cannot start your sleep cycle at any time you like. Many young people go to bed late and get up late. They think as long as they have 8 hours of sleep, everything will be fine. But in fact, our bodies can tell the time, particularly by using light and temperature. That is why a regular bedtime is really important. Even with enough hours of sleep, the wrong sleep time will still leave you feeling tired in the morning.
⑤So, to feel good in the morning, it is not only about how many hours you sleep, but also about when you wake up during your sleep cycle. Try using the Sleep Calculator and keep a regular bedtime. Wish you sweet dreams.
37.How does the writer start the passage?
A.By asking a question. B.By giving an example.
C.By listing numbers. D.By introducing an app.
38.What may happen during REM sleep?
A.Your heart always beats faster. B.You store energy for the next day.
C.You dream about flying in the sky. D.Your body gets a little cooler.
39.What does the underlined word “spring” mean in the passage?
A.He made a quick spring to catch the ball.
B.The clear spring comes out from the mountain.
C.Trees turn green and flowers bloom in spring.
D.When you push a spring, it pushes back.
40.Which of the following can be put in the box of the structure?
A.Sleep-cycle Stages & Reasons for Morning Tiredness
B.A Helpful Sleep Tool & Warning for Sleep Habits
C.REM Sleep Knowledge & New Sleep-cycle Findings
D.Better Sleep Time & Something about Light Sleep

We all have to ask for favors (帮忙) sometimes. But it can be a difficult thing to do—even when you ask a good friend. 41 Here are some suggestions.
Be a nice person.
When you ask someone for a favor, you’re really asking the person to go out of his or her way to help you. 42 If people think you’re friendly, they’re more likely to want to help. Thank them sincerely when they help you. And, of course, a smile goes a long way.
43
How do people respond to requests like this one: “Hey, Mike, lend me your car”? They probably refuse. How can you avoid this problem? Choose your words carefully. For example, say, “Mike, would you mind doing me a favor?” Mike will probably respond like this: “Maybe. What do you need?” 44 People are more likely to agree to help you when they know the whole story.
Show your respect.
If someone agrees to do you a favor, allow the person to choose when he or she helps you. Be respectful of the other person’s time, and try not to ask for too much. If someone refuses your request, you should accept the answer politely. 45
A.Choose your words carefully.
B.You’d better learn how to refuse a favor politely.
C.Why is it a good idea to ask for favors?
D.Now you have his attention and can explain the situation.
E.Don’t make a habit of asking for favors, and always make sure you’re ready to do someone a favor in return.
F.So how can you ask for a favor and be sure to get a positive (正面的) response?
G.Show the person that you understand he or she is doing something especially nice for you.

On August 16, 2025, Pang Zhongwang, a doctoral student from Tsinghua University, won the “Touching China 2024” Award. His story, from a young man who fought against great hardships to an encouraging character, has warmed many hearts.
Born with great challenges, Pang lived a hard life when he was a child. His father has a serious mental illness. His mother’s legs were cut off, so she could hardly move. Pang himself had a heart problem since he was born. He went door to door to borrow money for his mother’s illness. He also picked up waste things to make money and help pay off his family’s debts. However, he never lost hope. He always believed “Knowledge can change my life.”
In 2017, Pang entered Tsinghua University with a very high score in the college entrance exam. At first, he was worried that he might let others down. But later, he found his interest in scientific research. He kept trying even when he failed many times. Although money was still a problem, he decided to depend on himself. That’s why he said no to people who raised money for him. Instead, he asked Tsinghua University for grants (补助金) and won prizes for good grades. His mother named him “Zhongwang”, and it means “the hope of everyone”. She always told him to look forward to the future. Pang once said,“Mum smiles every day, why should I feel sad?”
Sadly, his mother passed away in 2020. That was just before he got the chance to study for a doctor’s degree at Tsinghua University. Now, Pang has written many important science papers and got patents (专利) for his inventions. His dream is to “serve the country through scientific research” and he works hard for this goal. His story lights the way for many people.
As the award speech says, “You leave your hard times behind. You face life with a smile and move forward strongly.” Pang’s journey shows us that we can live up to what others expect of us and create our own bright future if we are strong and keep hope.
64.When did Pang enter Tsinghua University?
65.What is Pang Zhongwang's dream?
66.Will you give up hope easily when you face difficulties? Why or why not?

1.—I wonder ________ we will have the sports meeting next week.
—It depends on the weather. If it rains, we will put it off.
A.when B.that C.whether D.where
“I wonder”后接宾语从句,wonder含义为 “想知道”,后面一般接带有疑问含义的引导词,结合答语“It depends on the weather.”
2.I’m not sure ________ he will come to our charity show tomorrow.
A.that B.whether C.what D.why
that无实际意义;whether是否;what什么;why为什么。
3.—I wonder ________ we can solve the problem of time management easily.
—Maybe you can make a plan first.
A.that B.what C.if D.who
that引导名词性从句,无实义;what什么;if如果,是否;who谁。I wonder后接宾语从句,根据“we can solve the problem of time management easily”可知,此处对“能否轻松解决时间管理的问题”提出疑问,从句中不缺主宾表等重要成分,因此用if或whether表示“是否”,引导宾语从句。
4.He has been interested in space ________ he was a little boy.
A.when B.after C.till D.since
when 当……时候;after在……
5.His careless mistake in the match ________ his coach deeply.
A.inspired B.disappointed C.cheered D.performed
根据“His careless mistake in the match”可知,比赛中的粗心失误带来的是让教练失望的结果,应填disappointed。
6.—Thank you for encouraging me when I was in trouble.
—________ That’s what friends are for.
A.My pleasure. B.Good idea. C.Not at all. D.That’s right.
【答案】A
My pleasure不客气,是我的荣幸 (回应感谢);Good idea好主意;Not at all不客气/不用谢 (也可回应感谢,但语气较正式/生硬);That’s right没错。前一句是表示感谢,这句应是回应感谢,且后面“That’s what friends are for.”,此处应是比较热情的回应,应填“My pleasure”。
7.The mid-term exam is coming. The students devote as much time as they have ________ over what they have learnt.
A.to going B.going C.to go D.go
【答案】A
8.What great difficulty they have ________ these photos of the wild animals!
A.to take B.take C.taken D.taking
固定搭配have difficulty (in) doing sth. take photos意为“拍照”,根据“What great difficulty they have..”
9.The test is coming. What else should we pay attention to ________ our grades?
A.to improve B.improving C.improve D.improved
【答案】A
故选A。
10.We had much difficulty ________ the problem. Luckily, we managed to solve it with Mrs Wu’s help.
A.working out B.work out C.worked out D.to work out
【答案】A
固定搭配:have difficulty (in) doing sth.

【答案】29.C 30.B 31.C 32.A
29.根据第二段“Leaves are green because they contain chlorophyll, which helps plants make food from sunlight”可知,树叶呈绿色是因为含有叶绿素,叶绿素帮助植物利用阳光制造养分。
30.根据第三段“As autumn comes, the days get shorter and there is less sunlight. The temperature also drops. This signals the tree to stop producing chlorophyll. As the green chlorophyll disappears, other colors in the leaves start to show”可知,当白天变短、气温下降时,树木停止产生叶绿素,树叶开始变色。
31.根据第四段“The sugar in the leaves gets trapped and produces a red pigment. This is why some trees like maples turn bright red in autumn”可知,树叶中的糖分被困住并产生红色素,这是部分树叶秋天变红的原因。
32.根据第五段“The timing of color change depends on several factors. Temperature, light and water all play a role”可知,影响变色时间的因素包括温度、光照和水分,文中未提及风速。

【答案】37.A 38.C 39.D 40.B

38.文章第②段“After that, you enter REM sleep. REM stands for rapid eye movement. This is when your dreams happen.”
39.画线词spring所在句“jump out of bed with a spring in your legs”意为“腿上像装了弹簧一样蹦下床”,spring在文中表示“弹簧”,用来比喻活力与弹力。
40.文章第③段“An app called Sleep Calculator can help you avoid this. It’s a tool designed to work out the perfect bedtime for you based on your wake-up time.”和第④段“However, calculating your bedtime is not enough. Regular bedtime is also important.”
