Wang Jiaqi, a Grade 8 student in Suzhou, has a best friend 8,000 kilometres away in Australia. Her name is Lucy.
The two girls became pen friends eight years ago. Their story began in Grade 1. In that year, their teachers started an international pen-friend project. Wang's first letter was only a few lines, but Lucy replied with a drawing of a beach in her city. Since then, they write to each other almost every month.
Things changed in Grade 6, when they began to make video calls. Now they talk about homework, pets and their dreams. Last summer Lucy's family visited China, and the two friends finally met. They walked along the old canals (运河) of Suzhou, and Lucy tried to make dumplings in Wang's home. “She is just like my sister,” said Lucy.
How can a friendship last so long across the sea? Wang's answer is simple: “Be honest and listen. Friends do not have to agree on everything, but they must care about each other's feelings.”
1.When did the two girls become pen friends?
2.How did the two girls first become pen friends?
3.What did Lucy do in Wang's home?
4.What is Wang's simple rule for a lasting friendship?
5.What is the passage mainly about?
1.Eight years ago. 2.Through a school project. 3.She tried to make dumplings. 4.Being honest and listening. 5.A friendship between pen friends.
1.第二段首句“became pen friends eight years ago”直接给出时间;注意题干问的是 When(何时开始),答“Eight years ago.”,不可照搬 How long 的答法“for eight years”。
2.第二段“In that year, their teachers started an international pen-friend project”点明结缘方式;题干 first 与原文 began 同义,答案取 through 之后的名词短语。
3.第三段“Lucy tried to make dumplings in Wang's home”直接给出事件;转述时主语用第三人称 she 代替 Lucy,动词用过去式 tried。
Do you feel better when your best friend sits beside you? Scientists say this feeling is good for more than your mood. A new study followed 500 Grade 8 students in Jiangsu for two school years.
The study found a clear result: students with close friends sleep better and get ill less often. When they have worries, they can share them instead of keeping them inside. Talking to a friend can reduce stress, and less stress means a stronger body.
“Many students want a large group of friends,” says Dr Ma. He led the study. “In fact, one good friend is enough. The quality (质量) of friendship matters more than the number.”
So how can you build such a friendship? Dr Ma gives simple advice: be a good listener, keep your promises, and say sorry when you are wrong. You cannot find a true friend in one day, but the time is worth it.
1.Who did the new study follow?
2.How does talking to a friend help our body?
3.What does the underlined word “reduce” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
4.According to Dr Ma, what matters more than the number of friends?
5.What advice does Dr Ma give for building friendship? (Give one example.)
1.Five hundred Grade 8 students. 2.It can reduce stress. 3.Make less. 4.Its quality. 5.Be a good listener.
2.第二段末句“Talking to a friend can reduce stress, and less stress means a stronger body”为因果链;回答 How 类问题抓住核心动词 reduce 即可。
上文“share worries instead of keeping them inside”说明倾诉能把压力放出去,下文“less stress”是结果提示。
4.第三段“The quality of friendship matters more than the number”中 more 后省略了比较对象;题干把比较结构补全,答案取 its quality。
Dear Amy,
My best friend Linda borrowed my favourite book last month. She lost it on the bus. When I got angry, she said it was “just a book”. We do not speak to each other now. Was I wrong? Yours, Unhappy
Dear Unhappy,
You can buy another book, but a best friend is hard to find. Linda's words hurt you because the book meant a lot to you. Tell her that honestly, not angrily. Try saying, “It was not about the book—it was about your words.” Then listen to her side. Perhaps she was too ashamed (羞愧的) to say sorry first. Give each other a chance, and you may find your friendship stronger than before. Yours, Amy

1.来信第二句“She lost it on the bus”直接给出事件;题干以书为主语提问,答语把主语换成 Linda,用一般过去时,动词 lost 不能丢。
2.回信第二句“because the book meant a lot to you”直接给出原因;转述时 you 要改为 her(指写信人),答语用 it 代替 the book 控制词数。
3.回信“Tell her that honestly, not angrily”给出表达方式;How 类问题抓方式副词,答案直接用原文的 honestly, not angrily。
4.回信“Perhaps she was too ashamed to say sorry first”中的 too...to 结构说明原因;too ashamed 是关键,答语用 because 从句或短语皆可。
5.回信首句“a best friend is hard to find”用后置定语强调;题干把 hard to find 提前,答案取主语 a best friend,与 another book 形成对比。

When Dongdong, a new student with hearing problems, joined Class 4 in Nantong, he sat alone at lunch every day. He could not follow the fast talk around him, and few classmates knew sign language (手语).
Mia, his deskmate, decided to learn it. Every evening she watched sign-language videos and practised in front of a mirror. At first their “talks” were simple—just “hello” and “thank you”. Later they could share jokes and even secrets with their hands.
Slowly more classmates joined them. Now a sign-language club meets every Tuesday, and Dongdong is its little teacher. “I used to think I should help him,” says Mia. “In fact, he opens a window for us to a quiet but beautiful world.”
This term the school gave the club a special prize—not for the hand signs, but for the friendship behind them.

2.第二段“watched sign-language videos and practised in front of a mirror”给出两个途径;How 类问题用 by + 动名词作答,两个动作可用 and 连接。
3.第三段“Dongdong is its little teacher”中的 its 指代 the sign-language club;题干把指代关系补全,答案只要人名 Dongdong 即可。
4.open a window for us 是比喻。
5.末段破折号后“for the friendship behind them”直接给出理由;not...but... 结构中 but 之后才是重点,them 指代 hand signs,答语可简化为 it。

This term, students at a middle school in Yangzhou hear a new bell: the fifteen-minute break. The school's morning and afternoon breaks are fifteen minutes long instead of ten.

“The old ten-minute break was too short,” says Mr Gu, a P.E. teacher. “Before, students just went to the toilet and hurried back. Now they can really relax, and they focus much better in the next class.”

Last Friday, the playground of a middle school in Lianyungang turned into a small “world”. Ten booths (摊位) stood under the trees. Each booth introduced a different country, from France to Egypt.
Visitors collected a “passport” card in the morning and travelled from booth to booth. At the Japan booth, they learned to fold paper cranes. At the Egypt booth, they wrote their names in hieroglyphs Every stamp on the passport meant one country visited.
Class 2's booth about Italy won the prize for the most creative one. The students made a “Leaning Tower” with paper boxes and taught visitors to say hello in Italian. “We spent two weeks preparing, and we learned as much as our visitors did,” says one student.

Xu Fan, a Grade 8 student in Wuxi, keeps a special notebook. It is not for beautiful handwriting or diary stories—it is a mistake notebook (错题本). Every mistake from her maths homework and tests goes into it.
She does not simply copy the wrong questions. Beside each one, she writes three things: why the mistake happened, the correct way, and one similar question to practise later. Every weekend she takes out the notebook and reviews the red marks.
“At first I thought it was a waste of time,” Xu Fan says. “But before the mid-term exam, I only reviewed my notebook, and my maths mark went from 76 to 91. Most of my mistakes never came back.”

My grandfather is seventy-two years old. Last winter, he made a surprising decision. He wanted to learn English. “I want to read the English on my medicine bottles (药瓶),” he said.
Every morning he sits at the kitchen table with my old textbook. He writes each new word five times in a small notebook, and he listens to a learning app (应用程序) for twenty minutes. When he meets a hard word, he calls me.
“At my age, memory is like an old bicycle,” he laughs. “It moves slowly, but it still moves.” Six months later, he can read the instructions on his medicine bottles. He can even say “Good morning” to the foreign doctor at the community hospital
Last week he asked me one question: “Am I too old to be a learner?” I looked at his notebook—three hundred words, every page dated. “No, Grandpa,” I said. “You are the best learner in our family.”
1.How old is the writer's grandfather?
2.What does Grandpa want to read in English?
3.How long does Grandpa listen to the app every day?

Do you know this feeling? You learn twenty new words at night, and the next morning most of them are gone. You are not alone. More than a hundred years ago, a German scientist named Ebbinghaus studied how fast people forget.
He found a surprising rule: people forget most of the new information within one day—about seventy percent—unless they review it. The good news is that forgetting slows down after each review. Review today, and tomorrow you forget less; review again tomorrow, and you remember even longer.
This is why teachers suggest “spaced review”—several short reviews with gaps (间隔) between them, instead of one long night before the exam. Reviewing new words for ten minutes a day for four days works better than a forty-minute crash (突击).
So next time, do not wait until your memory fades. Review after class, before bed, at the weekend, and again in a month. Little and often—that is how a good learner's brain works.
1.Who studied how fast people forget?
2.How much new information do people forget within one day?
3.What happens to forgetting after each review?
4.What does the underlined word “spaced” in Paragraph 3 mean?
5.What does the writer advise us to do?
Unit 3 To be a good learner · 科普说明文(遗忘曲线)
1.Ebbinghaus, a German scientist. 2.About seventy percent. 3.It slows down. 4.With gaps between. 5.Review little and often.
1.第一段末句“a German scientist named Ebbinghaus studied how fast people forget”直接给出人物;题干 studied 与原文同词,答语人名+身份要写全。
3.第二段“forgetting slows down after each review”直接给出规律;What happens 类问题答语主语 it 指代 forgetting, slows down 是核心动词短语。
破折号后“several short reviews with gaps between them”正是对该词的解释;词义猜测从同位语解释中找答案,用 with gaps between 概括。
5.末段“Little and often—that is how a good learner's brain works”是全文结论;advise 后接动词原形短语,little and often 是关键词组,不可只答 review。

In a small town near Xuzhou, Sun Hao spent two weekends this term in his grandfather's workshop. The thirteen-year-old wanted to make a birthday gift for his mother with his own hands—a small wooden stool (凳子).
It sounded easy, but it was not. He cut his first leg half a centimetre too short, and the stool rocked like a toy. Grandfather did not laugh. He only said, “Measure twice, cut once. Wood does not forgive careless eyes.”
Sun Hao started again, slower this time. He checked every line with a ruler, sanded (打磨) every corner smooth, and painted the stool his mother's favourite blue. When it stood steady at last, his hands were sore but his heart was proud.
His mother keeps the stool by her bed. “I bought many stools before,” she says, “but this one holds more than my weight—it holds my son's patience and love.”
1.What did Sun Hao want to make for his mother?
2.How long did Sun Hao spend on the stool?
3.What was wrong with the first leg?
4.What does “Measure twice, cut once” mean?
5.What does the stool hold in Mother's eyes?
1.A small wooden stool. 2.Two weekends. 3.He cut it too short. 4.Think and check before acting. 5.Her son's patience and love.
1.第一段“wanted to make a birthday gift...—a small wooden stool”给出目标;破折号后的名词短语才是具体物品,birthday gift 是上位概念,答具体物品更佳。
2.第一段首句“spent two weekends this term”直接给出时长;How long 答语“Two weekends.”
3.第二段“He cut his first leg half a centimetre too short”给出问题;too short 是核心信息,half a centimetre 是程度补充,写入答案易超词限。
上文“the stool rocked”是教训,下文“He checked every line with a ruler... slower this time”是行动验证。
5.末段“it holds my son's patience and love”直接给出答案;it 指代 the stool,答语用名词短语的所属格形式,patience and love 两者都要写。

People once saw ronghua, or velvet flowers (绒花), everywhere in Nanjing. In the past, women wore them in their hair on festivals, because “rong” sounds like “richness” in Chinese. People make the flowers with silk and copper wires (铜丝), all by hand.
This September, Mr Zhang, a local velvet-flower artist, brought his craft (手艺) to a middle school in Nanjing. In the workshop, students twisted the soft silk onto thin copper wires, petal (花瓣) by petal. “My first rose looked like a red carrot,” laughs one student. “But I couldn't stop.”
Mr Zhang learned the craft from his father and stayed with it for thirty years. “Machines can copy the shape, but not the warmth of the hand,” he says. “As long as young people are willing to learn, the flowers will keep opening.”
Now the school has a ronghua club with over forty members. Last month, people could see their works at the city's culture fair.
1.What are velvet flowers made of?
2.Why did women wear velvet flowers in the past?
3.What did the students do in Mr Zhang's workshop?
4.What does the underlined word “craft” in Paragraph 2 mean?
5.Why does Mr Zhang keep teaching the craft?
1.Silk and copper wires. 2.Because “rong” sounds like richness. 3.They made velvet flowers themselves. 4.Skilled handwork. 5.To pass it on.
1.第一段末句“make the flowers with silk and copper wires”给出材料;be made of 在题干中以被动形式出现,答语只要两种材料,and 连接缺一不可。
2.第一段“because ‘rong’ sounds like ‘richness’”直接给出原因;谐音信息要保留引号内的字,答 Why 用 because 从句。
3.第二段“students twisted the soft silk onto thin copper wires, petal by petal”概括为制作绒花;概括题不必照抄动作细节,用 made velvet flowers themselves 即可,themselves 体现动手。
上文 Mr Zhang 是 velvet-flower artist、下文“learned the craft from his father”都指向这门手工技能;词义猜测从人物身份和上下文找线索,答 skilled handwork。
5.末段张师傅的话“As long as young people are willing to learn, the flowers will keep opening”是关键;他坚持传艺是希望手艺有人传承,用 to do 不定式表目的,语义切题即可。

Every Wednesday afternoon, a corner of the school workshop in Zhenjiang turns into a “Repair Café”. Students bring broken things from home—a lamp, a toy car, a bicycle—and they try to fix them.
The club has twenty members and four tool boxes. Before they touch anything, they check three things: Is it safe? What is broken? Do we have the right part? “Half of the repairs are just cleaning and tightening (拧紧),” says the club leader, Zhou Yi.
Last month, a Grade 7 girl brought a small fan. It did not work for two years. The members cleaned the dust, changed a small part inside, and the fan worked again. “Her smile was better than a good mark,” says Zhou Yi.
The club also keeps a “sad box” for things they cannot fix. On the box, they write down one lesson from each failure (失败). “Fixing things teaches you more than buying new ones,” says Mr Shen, the shop teacher. “It teaches you to think, and it teaches you not to waste.”
1.What do students bring to the Repair Café?
2.How many members does the club have?
3.How long did the small fan not work?
4.What did the members do with the small fan?
5.What does Mr Shen think fixing things teaches?
1.Broken things from home. 2.Twenty. 3.For two years. 4.They cleaned and fixed it. 5.To think and not waste.
1.第一段“Students bring broken things from home—a lamp, a toy car, a bicycle”直接给出答案;破折号后是举例,答案取中心词组即可。
2.第二段首句“The club has twenty members and four tool boxes”直接给出人数;How many 答数词,不要把 tool boxes 一起答进去。
3.第三段“It did not work for two years”直接给出时长;How long 答语保留介词 for 更规范。
4.第三段“cleaned the dust, changed a small part inside, and the fan worked again”概括为修理成功;答语用过去时并列谓语,主语 they 指代 members。
5.末段 Mr Shen 的话“It teaches you to think, and it teaches you not to waste”是关键;回答用 to do 不定式概括两个要点,超过词数可只留“not to waste”。

Last month, 1,000 Grade 8 students in Jiangsu answered a survey about hands-on life at home. The first chart answers one question: who usually cooks at the weekend. Only nine percent of the students cook by themselves, while sixty-two percent leave the cooking to their parents.
The second chart is more thought-provoking Students scored their own life skills out of ten. Students with weekly cooking gave themselves 8.6 points; sometimes-cooks gave 7.2; never-cooks gave only 5.9.
“Hands-on work is not a waste of study time,” says Dr Qin, an education expert. “Cooking, washing and small repairs train the hands and the brain at the same time. Students learn to organize a meal, and the same skill helps them organize homework.”
Some schools took action. Next term they will start cooking classes. Teachers will also check students' weekend “hands-on homework”—helping make one meal—together with written homework.
1.How many students took part in the survey?
2.What percentage of the students cook by themselves?
3.Who do most students leave the cooking to?
4.Which group gave themselves the lowest score?
5.What does the writer want to suggest?
1.One thousand. 2.Nine percent. 3.Their parents. 4.The never-cook group. 5.Students should do more hands-on work.
1.第一段首句“1,000 Grade 8 students...answered a survey”直接给出人数;How many 答人数,写成英文“One thousand.”即可。
2.第一段“Only nine percent of the students cook by themselves”与图1“I cook myself 9%”相互印证;答语“Nine percent.”,图表题要文字与图互查。
3.第一段“sixty-two percent leave the cooking to their parents”中 sixty-two percent 对应图1中最高项 Parents;most students 与题干 most 呼应,答案取 to 之后的宾语。
4.第二段三个分数中 5.9 最低,对应“never-cooks”;Which group 类问题答“the never-cook group”,与图2“Never cook”柱子最矮相互验证。

Dear Amy,
My best friend Linda borrowed my favourite book last month.
Yours, Amy
1.What happened to the writer's book?
2.Why did Linda's words hurt the writer?
3.How does Amy ask the writer to tell Linda her feelings?
4.Why didn't Linda say sorry at first?
5.What does Amy think is hard to find?

1.Why did Dongdong sit alone at lunch at first?
2.How did Mia learn sign language?
3.Who teaches the sign-language club now?
4.What does “he opens a window for us” in Paragraph 3 mean?

This term, students at a middle school in Yangzhou hear a new bell: the fifteen-minute break. The school's morning and afternoon breaks are fifteen minutes long instead of ten.
During the longer break, corridors (走廊) are no longer quiet. Students jump rope in the playground, play shuttlecock (毽子) outside the teaching building, or simply walk and chat in the sun. Quiet students can read or draw in the classroom.
“The old ten-minute break was too short,” says Mr Gu, a P.E. teacher. “Before, students just went to the toilet and hurried back. Now they can really relax, and they focus much better in the next class.”
At first, some parents did not like the change. They were afraid of losing study time. But the school's mid-term results showed the opposite: happier students, and better marks.
1.How long is the break at the school now?
2.What can quiet students do during the break?
3.Why did the school make the breaks longer?
4.What were some parents afraid of at first?
5.What did the mid-term results show?

Tuanzi, a fat orange cat, is probably the most popular “student” at a school in Changzhou. Two years ago, she was a hungry street cat near the school gate. Now she has her own feeding bowl, her own small house, and even her own fan club.
The club has thirty-two members. They take turns looking after Tuanzi: feeding her, brushing her fur and cleaning her house. A duty roster (值日表) is on the club's board, and nobody ever misses their day.
“Taking care of Tuanzi is not just fun,” says Chen Mo, the club leader. “She depends on us. If we forget, she goes hungry. That teaches us responsibility (责任) better than any lesson.”
Teachers noticed the change too. Students without any club now arrive early to school. “The cat makes our campus warmer,” says the headmaster with a smile.

“Books give students facts, but a day like this gives them the world,” says Ms Qian, the organizer (组织者). The school plans to make International Day a tradition every autumn.

Her maths teacher calls the notebook “a mirror”. “Marks tell you how much you learned. Mistakes tell you what to learn next,” he says. “Smart learners always study their mistakes.”
