Children’s Sci-fi Art Predicts Extraordinary Future
More than 80 sci-fi artworks are on display at the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, showing a beautiful yet puzzling future. The “Brave New Sci-Fi World” exhibition features paintings and art installations (设备) by students from Shanghai, Beijing, Chongqing and other cities. Ru Chen, from Shanghai New Putuo Primary School, has pictured a robot chameleon (变色龙) to be used in outer space to aid in the search and rescue of human beings in case of danger.
Li Jiaqi from Guangzhou Dongfeng East Road Primary School has painted a city where advanced technologies are everywhere, and even the city itself turns into a large robot.
Huang Yanrui from Beijing Shijingshan Gucheng No.2 Primary School imagines his rubber, pencil box and such stationery (文具) becoming conscious robots, and beginning to design future human beings.
Wang Zhihan, from Shanghai Shangde Experimental School and her schoolmates, stick electronic components on stone faces as a metaphor (隐喻) for the increasingly unclear boundaries between the reality and virtual world. “We hope to remind people never lose yourself in a world with advanced technologies,” she said.
The exhibition will last till November 4.

Today was my first day at senior high and it was hard. In high school, you have 4 minutes to get to your next class. My high school is very big and those 4 minutes to go from one class to another really isn’t a lot of time. Today I had to go from one end of the building to the other to get from science class to math class. I wanted to go to my locker first and leave my science book there, but that took time. I was worried about being late, and I was. The math teacher said, “Just be on time tomorrow, or you’ll have detention (放学后留校).”
After math, I went to art class. I like my art class a lot because I get to create things. The teacher there showed us how to make portraits (肖像). He explained, “A portrait is a way of communicating with a person. It does not just show how the person looks but what is important to understand the person.” We just did drawings today, but I know it’s going to be great. I like drawing.
I like my English class, too. I think the teacher is really supportive (支持的). Today we wrote about ourselves. The teacher said to just write what you think, and we’ll pay attention to punctuation (标点) later. We could write a paragraph or a poem, and I wrote a poem about myself. I thought it was a good poem, and the English teacher said I had used good images (意象) to communicate my feelings.
Lunch was very hurried. I arrived at the dining room with 12 minutes to eat. I sat with people I didn’t know, and everyone was eating quickly. After lunch I signed up for a computer club. I need to learn how to use a computer well because my social studies teacher says it is the one skill you need in every class.
24. What happened to the author after science class?
A. He lost his science textbook. B. He got lost on the campus.
C. He was late for math class. D. He was given detention.
25. What did the author think of his art class?
A. Difficult. B. Enjoyable. C. Boring. D. Tired.
26. What did the English teacher do after seeing the author’s work?
A. He praised (表扬) the author.
B. He pointed out the author’s mistake.
C. He asked the author to check punctuation.
D. He encouraged the author to introduce himself.
27. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. Learn useful skills in high school
B. My new teachers in high school
C. Make plans for high school life
D. My first day in high school

A heartwarming letter written by Yuan Longping, known as “the father of hybrid rice”, has caught people’s eyes as the nation is mourning (悼念) over his passing away. In 2010, at the age 80, Yuan wrote this letter in memory of his late mother, Hua Jing, and many are deeply touched by its sincerity (真情).
In the letter, entitled “The Rice is Ripe (成熟), Mom”, Yuan recalled the old days with his mother in Anjiang town in Central China’s Hunan province, where his mother was buried in 1989.
Born in a wealthy family in Yangzhou, eastern China’s Jiangsu province, Hua Jing was well educated and open-minded. She taught Yuan English when he was very young. Having never worked in the fields, Hua moved to Anjiang town to support her son’s family and research.
“Mom, the rice is ripe and I come back to Anjiang to see you. ... Every time when I was able to deliver a speech to the audiences from around the world or take a prize in my study, I always thought of you. You made me who I am. People say I’ve changed the world with one tiny rice seed but mom, I know you sowed (播种) the seed in me when I was a little boy.”

Carl Wilhelm Scheele ranks as one of the greatest scientists of all time, but he paid a big price for this honor.
Born in 1742 in present-day Germany, Scheele learned about chemicals from his parents starting at a young age. When he was 14, he was sent away to Gothenburg (哥德堡) to become the apprentice (学徒) of a family friend. There he spent eight years studying chemistry and conducting experiments late into the night. Next, Scheele moved around the Holy Roman Empire, working for different chemists and becoming more learned in his trade. In 1767, he moved to Stockholm, where he discovered tartaric acid (酒石酸).
After three years in Stockholm, he became the director of the Locke Laboratory. It was there while he was analyzing a strange reaction, that Scheele became the first person to identify (确认) oxygen.
He called the element “fire air” because he believed, based on the theories of his time, that a substance (物质) that made up fire was released from items when they burned. Scheele believed oxygen to be this substance, not understanding that oxygen is merely an element that facilitates (促进) the chemical reaction that is fire.
As historic as this discovery was, Scheele seldom got credit for it, largely because English scientist Joseph Priestley published findings on oxygen before Scheele, even though it is now generally accepted that Scheele made the actual discovery first.
Through his work, he thus exposed himself to many harmful materials. These chemicals had a deadly (致命的) effect on Scheele, and he eventually died of kidney failure in 1786.
Sadly, in spite of his many achievements and the fact that he gave his life to chemistry, Carl Wilhelm Scheele is often forgotten in the history of science. Though he discovered many elements before other better-known scientists did, his unwillingness to both attend meetings of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and to publish his work allowed other scientists to take credit for discoveries that he had made.
32. Who first taught Chemistry to Scheele?
A. Joseph Priestley. B. His parents.
C. His family friend. D. The Holy Roman Empire.
33. When did Scheele probably discover oxygen?
A. In 1745. B. In 1767. C. In 1770. D. In 1789.
34. What do the underlined words “the element” refer to?
A. Oxygen. B. Tartaric acid.
C. The strange reaction. D. The chemical experiment.
35. What can we learn about Scheele from the text?
A. He has been world-famous since the 1700s.
B. He actually died due to his dangerous work.
C. He discovered oxygen later than Joseph Priestley.
D. He thought his findings were not valuable at all.

It was a Saturday afternoon. I was having lunch when Dad told me to get ready. I became unhappy. I don’t like Saturdays! Even though it’s a holiday for most children, it is not for me because I need to go to football club.
Many kids love sports, but I am not one of them. I prefer to stay at home and read. I don’t like running, so in a team I am a bad player. The coach (教练) is tired of me and my teammates sometimes think I’m useless.
I have no idea how to play football. Usually, after practice my teammates would ask me to stay out of the game and I would just nod (点头)。
Last Thursday, the coach told us that we would be competing with another team in a month and many people would come to see the game. Our opponents (对手) were the winner last year and I froze (呆住) and thought how awkward it would be if the team lost because of me.
So I decided to practice hard for the match and I went to practice every single day.
After one month, when the game day came, my teammates were reluctant (不愿意的) to take me in the team, and I also wished to stay away from the ground as well. But as luck would have it (碰巧) they were short of one player and had no choice but to take me in the team.
Our team was the Big Blues. There was a great cheer (欢呼) on our arrival in the field. I got very nervous. The game started and within two minutes, I got a blue card. By the time I was allowed back, the score was two goals for each team and the next goal would decide the winning team.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
